- In the mid-2000s, the NBA's Western Conference faltered a bit, allowing for the Eastern Conference to swoop in and win a couple championships. Heading into that mini era, anyone would have picked the New Jersey Nets to snatch at least one of those trophies. But instead of seizing the throne, the Nets followed back-to-back Finals visits with disaster: heartbreaking playoff defeats, payroll cuts, injuries, bad luck, and an eventual departure for Brooklyn.
This is how the New Jersey Nets collapsed.

Jason Kidd is low key underrated. His stats dont pop out at you, but his impact was greater than his numbers.
The fact that he turned himself into a knockdown three-point shooter in his 45th year in the league was pretty impressive too. He sank a few key shots in the Mavericks' championship run.

The Goin' To Work Pistons had no superstars and no egos; guys like Chauncey Billups and Ben Wallace kept their heads down, their mouths shut, and simply worked on putting together a team that was greater than the sum of its parts, all of which gave them a lovable blue-collar persona.

Kidd was such a great superstar PG for that team. But once they lost Kenyon Martin - who I will always believe was the soul of those Nets teams - they were done. That was the one guy they needed to retain.

Here‘s some food for thought: Can we trace the Mavs‘ 2011 championship to Kidd‘s 2003 decision? Because I don‘t think he ever would have returned to the Mavs had he signed with the Spurs back then.
And you could make the argument that if the Mavs had not collapsed against the Warriors in '07 (video idea?) in a relatively weak west that year and after coming close to winning it all in 06, they may not have looked to sign him either.
If anything that Kidd ripple would affect a growing Tony Parker who Popp was showing some frustration at first and was willing to cut loose. But it worked out in the end as his amazing metric to attack the basket and improved court vision would help the Spurs in their own deep runs for the chip.
This would mean that Tony Parker ends up in Seattle or Cleveland, and ends up pairing with Ray Allen or Lebron.

If you don’t mind me asking when the Nets were in New Jersey were they more popular than the Devils? I always assumed because they won three Stanley Cups that the Devils were the much more popular team, but then again I’m not from New Jersey so I wouldn’t know.
@@cooperwolfe5478 Nope. The Devils were always the main team in New Jersey. The Nets were good at the same time that the Devils were good which really sucked for the Nets because they couldn't break through as a popular team.
The Nets in general were always the second team in New Jersey behind the Knicks and now they're the second team in Brooklyn behinds the Knicks despite their success in NJ and now. They're just not likeable for some reason even though I and some other fans have always rooted for them.
As a Nets fan who loved this team, Mutombo was very bad on the team. His style of rebounding completely broke their fast break offense. I really think the actual mistake of team building was their fixation on replacing Jason Collins. The Nets didn't need a strong rebounding center. Their best offense came off of Collins boxing out so Kidd could get the rebound and kick off the fast break. They spent two off seasons in a row acquiring Clunky centers who did not mesh well with the team, and couldn't stay on the floor anyway. They were stuck looking toward the center dominated NBA of the past, instead of the high tempo offenses that the NBA was slowly moving toward.

They were better off without Collins though. He was really not good at all. And he couldn’t play fast either.
Mutumbo was a product of 80s and early 90s basketball. Things were starting to change when be joined the Nets
They got a good center in 2008 but Carter hot injured and Kidd quit
What would've also helped is potentially trying Kenyon Martin at center and running Van Horn at PF. Yes, Martin would be very undersized at the position, but so was Collins. That could've been big in certain situations.

If Vince gets to the Nets in 04 with Kenyon & Zo stays, they get to the finals until 07. Vince got traded from one dysfunctional franchise to another. A lot of people don’t realize he carried that Nets team to the playoffs 3 years in a row with an aging Kidd and injury riddled roster and no big man.

The trade never happens here because Prokhorov would’ve bought the team in 04’, and would’ve already had his championship. Or maybe he’s going for more, and it does happen.
As a Celtics fan, I HATED the Nets in the early to mid 2000s! But after they moved to Brooklyn and made the KG/Paul Pierce trade, I love the Nets!

Vince is a legend. I think he makes it to the HOF. Greatest dunker of all time. He's played in 4 decades. 90's, 00's, 10's, and 20's. Just insane to think about. He's been in every role possible from rising young star, all star, superstar, contributing starter, key bench player, deep depth player, to end of bench mentor. Wish he could've gotten a ring but respect that he chose to go to teams that would give minutes so he can actually play. That experience makes him a great analyst now because he's been there and understands all roles plus had actually played with a lot of the old legends and young guys.
Nets fan here, everybody keeps forgetting that Kenyon Martin was the Net's best player after Kidd during the Finals against the Spurs but got sick. They were tied 2-2 heading back to New Jersey when Kenyon Martin got the flu. The NJ Nets then went on to lose the last two games of the Finals with Kenyon Martin playing sick. I believed the Nets had a good shot at winning the Finals or at least getting to a game 7 had Kmart stayed healthy.
Some of the best memories from my childhood. RIP New Jersey Nets.

Yeah, that 2004-05 Astros team was so much fun. It had guys like Berkman, Oswalt, Beltran, and Everett in their primes, along with the end of Biggio, Bagwell, and Ausmus in their primes.
I thought they were a bit unlucky to be swept by the White Sox in the 2005 WS. Every game was within reach for the Astros, just couldn’t find a way to win.

I don’t know. It’s one of those relocations that worked out for both sides. I know that people from New Jersey are upset that the Nets left, but at least you still got to keep the Devils, and at least you’re not Oakland, they lost the Warriors and Raiders to San Francisco and Las Vegas, and are going to lose the A’s soon.

The Nets of the 2000s were in that awkward era of the East between the end of Michael Jordan and the beginning of LeBron James. Too bad they couldn’t win at least one series.
Thus that early 2000's era (i.e '02-'06)of the NBA is a great example of why commentators and fans such as myself some support having "intra-conference" Finals. Perfect example would be in 2002 with the Kings and Lakers. I hope in near future that they consider this proposal? The NBA goes to seeding beginning with the Conference Finals and rename them the Final 4. If that means an all East or all West Championship Finals, so be it. Imagine in 2018, how great would a Houston/Golden State NBA Finals would have been instead of Lebron carrying on his back at best a so-so Cavs team in an otherwise weak NBA East that season? While the first 2 rounds of the playoffs **would still be the same format that been in effect for a while now, i.e Intra-Conference games only within the East and West Division.
Back to this topic. In those 2 back-back finals appearance the then NJ Nets had no chance against the Spurs and Lakers. The then Jersey team were very lucky to win 2 games in '03. With that said moving up about 15 years later in 2019, I think it might be time for Prokhorov to consider selling the now Brooklyn Nets as well. Might be only chance for the Nets to become a strong contender again.

Great vid. Jason Kidd was under appreciated for years. Steve Nash got the praise and MVP's while Kidd had a better overall game and actually lead his teams to the finals with less talent which Nash never did.
Him playing in a tougher conference doesn't take away from him playing with way more talent than Kidd and achieving less. Spurs and Suns were running the west in Nash's MVP reign. D'antoni didn't believe in Defense
