I have zero experience with this type of art but today i hopped on procreate got a reference and started doing this sorta thing i did no line art just a brown figure at first with the background ready with no line art as well i struggle with line art so this is the first time i created something i liked! i finished part if it and hopped on youtube to see what others did it seems I actually did good! The thing is I always want to colour in things but line art takes me so long i never get there and give up i wanted to improve in colouring so i skipped lineart and i really found it fun, Make sure to get the best reference for you! Maybe listen to songs or sm hope you reading this can create something cool next time you draw!

This was an amazing portrait. I do have a question though. As someone who was kind of forced into realism at a young age, the thought that crept into my brain was that I'm simply copying what I see, or rather I'm not creating something new, and all the work / effort I put into drawing realism could be replicated with a camera in 0.5 seconds. This thought stuck with me for the past 9 years and has almost entirely killed my drive for art and I can maybe draw once a month or so if the mood strikes. . What keeps you going? How do you kill thoughts like these and stay motivated?
brandon haist Thank you for the comment. I am sad to hear your story, but theres many styles in drawing. Realism suites me and i am venturing other media. Just go for it. as long as there are people that appreciating my work and as long as i am happy for what am i doing.
I relate to you so much. In school we weren’t really given much freedom to incorporate a style of our own into our work. It was just realism realism realism. So I didn’t have much of a chance to figure out what I wanted to draw, what my art style was, what my favorite medium was. So on my own time, I started to explore my art style starting with my style of drawing people. I would research other people’s styles, search up face structure, try to use references. I tried everything and when I tell you it took me years, I’m not joking. There were times when I though I found it, but realized later that I didn’t. The thing is, our art styles are always evolving. I do think I have an idea of my art style now but it can branch off into so many others at times. While I personally still enjoy realism sometimes, it’s fun to just put away the references and be spontaneous when I’m drawing sometimes. That is the thing that keeps me motivated. It forces me to explore my imagination and explore my style without overthinking. It forces me to figure out what I like to draw, what methods I like to use and what mediums I like to use. I’m still experimenting all the time and my style changes but once it makes me happy and at peace, I know I’m heading in the right direction. So my advice to you is keep experimenting! Observe real life references, or other artist’s work that you relate to. Try different mediums, methods, etc. Be spontaneous sometimes and draw from your imagination. Most of all, figure out what gives you peace and happiness, what gets the wheels in your mind turning. That’s what will keep you going. Hope this helps.
How did you get the initial sketch down before you started painting? How to make sure that's right? You didn't end up having to significantly move anything you painted to fix proportions.

Im a beginner and i can say, that is the best portrait on procreate i have ever seen! I was looking for such an tutorial and i found it really good,that you only use the soft brush and sometimes the smudgebrush, so its easier for me to understand. Many people told me, that i have to use customize brushes on the store, but i didnt like that. The only thing, what i dont understand is, when do you use the smudge brush for blending? I mean, you can blend everything with the soft brush too or? So what i set up for my portrait (i started yesterday because of your video and have no drawing experience :-D) is... PencilBrush for sketching on a new layer. SOFTBRUSH WITH 70% opacity so i can control more. But the smudgebrush is something confusing. When to use it, when you can blend with softbrush too?
What i want to ask you too is, if you give small video corrections ? Like, i give you my nose, that i drew and you correct it and give me the right direction?

Thank you. Yes you can blend everything with soft airbrush just adjust the opacity for softwr or hard blend. :)
