The life boats and debris flying up in the air and falling down hitting the water after the torpedo impact looks awesome. However, the actual explosion of the torpedo impacting the hull needs some tweaking E:G; a huge ball of smokey fire. But, it's still an awesome looking sim!
Well done, sir! I probably would have planted my face into either the waves or the ship I was targeting! And, congratulations on the 20k subscriber mark! You definitely deserve it!
Does the game engine take into account the max allowed speed and height for the torpedo drop? IRL if one of the two (or both) we too high - torpedos simply broke apart on the water landing.
Thought the same thing watching him engage at that speed. That was always the challenge of dropping a torpedo. You have to drop it at a slow speed and certain height making you a more vulnerable target.
In the Minute 2:25, there is an interactive mouse-cursor in the Wellington’s cockpit, that hovers over the “Open Bomb Bay Doors” button and click on its Handle-Switch to actually open it! Did I miss something? IL has finally an interactive Cockpit like in DCS? Or is it only available in the new Battle of Desert Wings?
IL-2 Dover series always had click pits...That's how I learned how a real aircraft operates back then in 2012 with Cliffs of Dover. Most instruments/levers on the pits are clickable and have mouse over info.
Good to know Thanks for the Info There is a big gap in the IL-COD promotion on IL-GB Site missing to mention the Interactive Clickable Cockpit though. Asking why - can stir anger...
Cliffs of Dover has surprisingly good naval physics. If you bomb a ship and land a close miss, the hull may still crack and the ship starts taking on water, the ship will start listing to the side where the bomb hit, meaning if you hit or closely missed aft and starboard, she will start taking on water in the compartments you'd expect. That is a detail that I miss in great battles, where I don't think the naval damage model is as well done as in CloD
I noticed that the Wellingtons basically flew straight over the ships, whereas the Heinkels broke left after the torpedo release. Wasn't the latter tactic considered more effective? Pilots on strafing runs are generally told not to overfly AAA. By breaking at a 90-degree angle, it is harder for the enemy gunners to compute lead versus a plane that is basically stationary from their perspective. Also, the torpedoes were dropped at a very close distance; in IL-2 1946, they would have gone underneath the ship.
The very first thing I was going to ask was to do an attack in a German tactical bomber, but you already had that in the second part of the video! Wolfpack knows what the subs want! :P In any case, nice torpedo runs, those were pretty close!
I dont have this game but do have the old CLOD with the Blitz package and i have all the Sturmoviks, been a player of the sim since it came out and the other day just browsing on my computer decided to fire up CLOD after several months of not playing it,i sure enjoy the sounds the guns make compared to great battles, you can feel those cannon rounds as they exit the barrel, just awesome. Also i have my zoom on my joystick hat, forward zooms in and so forth, man on CLOD it is so fast i forgot how much i liked that, is that the game engine that does that? because on great battles i can go cook a meal between zooming in and out when i'm flying and sometimes for some reason it just gets stuck a bit, anyhow i think I'm gonna get me this when i get a chance, looks like fun.
Wolfie, I am really enjoying these vids. I love the air to air combat content, but flying bombers on ground/surface attack missions is a nice change. I hope you will consider a career series based upon larger aircraft.
Would be a nice to buy this game considering dcs devs increased prices for my country.was planning to buy a-10 but this seems a good substition at near half the price
Finally getting notifications again! Although both runs were highly successful in achieving their objectives I must state that I dont believe the british ever considered kamikaze style attacks to be particularly effective. It seemed most of the damage on the german cruiser was caused by Wellington pilots deciding to make sudden unplanned stops in the hull and superstructure of the ship.
Given the AI isn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to effectively dodging AAA fire I really consider them a non factor. In reality yes this would have been a phyric victory at best for both runs.
could a WW2 air torpedo be dropped at full throttle ?............I thought one had to be low and slow so the weapon would not tumble or break up on impact with the water
I'm pretty sure it's not an axis because there is an auto zoom in/out you can bind to keys or joystick and change the speed in the config file forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/33086-enabling-zoom-in-cod-blitz/
Remember doing those kinds of runs and doing nothing in BF1942. Perfect runs, and noone, even the game, told me that torpedoes was not implemented. They were just bombs with different skin. Too bad I've gotten too old and crap to make IL-2 work proper with my eyes and brain. At least i can watch this.
Hey man, just some friendly observations, I don't think that rapidly changing your bank angle (waving wings up and down) substantially changes the centre of mass to aim at. Try it yourself as an AA gunner with a friend who will rock the wings and you'll see what I mean . Real shooting defence tactics do exist but I will let you look it up if you wish to . Thanks.
Another great video, thank you Wolfpack! Can you tell me, please, is there any possibility to give an order to your squadron or wingman? Few years ago i play Il-2 Cliffs of Dover, and got real troubles with AI planes under my command. They just lives their own lives and never listening to most commands. In classic IL-2 1946 game this issue was much more better. Tell me please, we got adequate AI planes in Desert War expansion?
How sad that you can't fly a Sparviero in this. Ever since I saw one at the Italian Air Force Museum I thought it was one of the prettiest machines of WW2.
The buildings I have just been made redundant from in Blackpool UK is were Wellington bombers were built from 1938 to 1945 4 thousand were produced in this building we found graffiti from the girls who made the Wellington interesting stuff
A lot of things about this game looks really awsome. Only thing im worried about is MP playercount since i really only play MP. Also i wonder i they have improved the UI a bit since the CLOD UI is not the best.
It’s such a shame they could not implement il2 great battles advanced ground damage model as this example shows the obviously severely limited ground damage model.
2 completely different game engines from separate developers, and unlike the BOS series Cliffs has not seen any official updates since 2012. Some people prefer 1 or the other, some like both.
I agree, but don't forget that the amount of variables modelled in the Cliffs engine is absurd...Oleg Maddox level of absurd. And you have clickable cockpits with mouse over labels, something that for me alone is the ultimate immersion for learning how to start and manage your plane.
@@danperin Totally agree. Eye candy and immersion are related but each has a stronger appeal to the 'air combat gamer' or the 'warbird enthusiast'. Not strictly absolutes but Cliffs has typically appealed to older enthusiast flyers compared to BOS series younger gamers. This Tobruk upgrade to Cliffs will likely help bridge that gap.

Hm, the planes are really nice. The air battles you've featured in your other videos are enjoyable to watch. But the water, the ships, torpedoes and their damage models seem so strange and static, as if you wanted to put a flight simulator in the corset of a silent hunter. : /

I love how it seems like this is gonna have a naval focus. Air-to-sea combat isn’t talked about enough
Imagine being the nose gunner in the Heinkel if it was real life, I would have some extra laundry to do afterwards for sure.
You mean because you'd crap your pants...? 😉
Congratulations on 20k!
Thanks! 😄
Im happy to be one of them :)
TryToGetPro me too 😁
Over 40k now!
Great video Wolfpack! Torpeddo runs at wave top are an adrenaline rush. What's next mate? :) Cheers, Pattle
Hmm maybe Stukas? 😉
Nice torpedo runs!
Shame there’s no Italian S.M. 79 II trimotor though - I love that plane, so idiosyncratic.
Creating twin engined bombers is a huge task.... that being said we hope to introduce the SM.79 in our next module.

Stas Shche probably
Well they already simulate bomb skipping, so torpedo speed and height should definitely be in.
The torpedoes even bounce off depending on the angle you hit the ship and how hard is its armor so i believe everything works as it should.
Thought the same thing watching him engage at that speed. That was always the challenge of dropping a torpedo. You have to drop it at a slow speed and certain height making you a more vulnerable target.
I am hoping the realistic torpedo drop options were turned off for this video.

Nice torpedo run and fly plass on the destroyer.
Great video Wolfpack, flying the 2 aircraft at
Love these quick little mission videos. Gotta keep doing these bud!
Hey, what do you think about the planned updates for Wolfpack? I‘m hyped for the playable destroyers and Aircrafts
PS: congrats 4 20k!
Thee new road map for wolfpack looks great!
And thanks :D
Wow dude it's good to see that a company picked you up! You're worth it and make great videos!
Thanks man!
It's a privilege for us to have Wolfpack on board :)
Aircraft looked sweet , great looking video as always.
Thanks will!
Be glad it was an old QE. The Renown had a heavy flak refit in early 1940 and was the best flak ship in the RN after the PoW was sunk by the Japanese.
Great rendition of the ocean.
Looks like lots of fun
It was!
I want to see your torpedo runs as soon as the expansion is released, Flare! ;)
would love to see some more Wellington gameplay

So cool! Cant wait for this expansion!
Torpedo runs had to be one of the scariest things you could do as a WW2 pilot.
Btw how advanced is the ship ai? Can they do evasive maneuvers?
Launching torpedoes successfully is really tricky.
They often don't arm or break up.

And they shoot at you - a lot!
This guy is an imposter, he's actually a u-boat captain.
that was cool thank's man :):)
Thanks for watching!
Dude, show the p40!
ASuW and ASW are my jam!
Is this more forgiving with graphics since the presumably less heavy map?
Does this have ps4 controller support? Cool stuff. thx.
This play by play is wonderful, not unlike horseracing or dogracing, damn addicting, damn addicting,...😎
The AA seemed kind of lackluster. But maybe that's how it was early in the war.
just subbed! nice video😎

yes all cockpits are the same for Cliff Blitz and Tobruk
new IL2 is exciting. last I played was in 1946 and all aircraft arcade!
Another great video, keep it up
Gotta say im hooked on your vids man. Big kisses to ya
Your Wellington’s squadron code is of 312th (Czechoslovak) RAF squadron. Is that on purpose, or are the codes randomly generated?
You can select your squadron markings in multiplayer, while they are defined by the mission designer in singleplayer.
Did I see some Wellingtons amongst those HE 111's...or HE 111's amongst the Wimpys?
Fantastic showcase! Are these aircraft and ships available for use in the North Sea map as well?
Will you play an bomber carrier ? would be interesting as HE111
