11:49 god damn Toronto rail lands was my shit when I was growing up. I love that small route so much that I’ve been painlessly upgrading it for the past three years with more industries/details and better textures, track, signals, roads, etc. Hell, I even recoded the two coaling stations outside of each roundhouse that did absolutely nothing and made them actually function!
I will admit most if not all of my memories of this game are rooted in the 2004 edition. I wish I could still find the old models from Virtual Motive Division, their depictions of the Santa Fe FP45/F45s were glorious.
This is The best commentary video I have ever seen. Trainz driver was my first ever Trainz version I have ever played. Also Trainz simulater 2 iPad (which is the version I am currently playing now) was the first to not have all the bells ringing Not TANE. But still this was a very enjoyable video you did a wonderful job
I had a number of versions of this game, it's the route builder that really made this game stand out over all the others with the way-too-simple-for-their-price routes. The player created assets were both a blessing and a curse as dependencies often gave issues. You can both play this from a train driver perspective or as an actual railroad sim and you can make -big- landscapes with lots of equally branches / whatever.
I always had a problem with T:ANE with the derailments, especially when you want to create a hell of a bloody mess to clean up. The smoke from steam locomotives behaving like the real thing was great and it's definitely something that another train simulator game should be thinking of (Dovetail Games, take note).
I remember I was in my first year of high school when the first version of this and MSTS released. I had just gotten super into train simulators and owned both, though as the years progressed I kinda settled into the MSTS camp. Now as an almost 35 year old I've been out of the simulator scene for awhile but it was nice to stumble upon this video for nostalgia. I'm glad new generations are still enjoying these classic simulators.
As a kid, I had Trainz Driver 2006 North American edition. Although I couldn't make my own scenarios, routes, or download additional content, I enjoyed playing that game with what I had. I hope someday to get TANE or Trainz 19 when I get a computer that can handle it. (I tried TANE during a free weekend, and it performed quite laggy)
God the original trainz driver North American edition was my shit and first trainz game I ever got. I remember seeing it on display in a target next to a copy of railroad tycoon 3. Though I didn’t get RT3 until fairly later, trainz however continued on. Hell, my first big trainz game was a copy of 2006 and trainz classics with the rail driver system thing.
@@re57k A while ago I've downloaded Trainz 2010 but nah the 2006 is the best of all times before I just have the demo version when I was young then after I have the 2009 and now that I'm already old enough I now have both versions except TANE
2006 is what introduced me to Trainz. It'll always have a special place in my life. And I still have it on my new gaming computer along with TRS19, TANE AND TS12.
This game was my childhood, I remember playing it on my iPad every day, until I got a PC and started to play Railworks instead. Thank you for making this video and getting me once again interested in this legendary franchise!
I have been with Trainz since 2006, and have never regretted it. I even actually still have the original package and discs from TRS2006. I am on TRS19 now, but sometimes I feel nostalgic for 2006. The coolest thing is that I am actually now on the testing team for N3V, which is a huge honor. interestingly, I was actually testing TRS19 before it even had a name (late 2017). I plan on playing in Trainz for many many years as well.
I'm one of the Thomas creators (if it wasn't obvious) and if it wasn't got TS I wouldn't be were I am now.. Thank you so much to those who joined together to make this amazing game and amazing community
Trainz 12 was my first Trainz game as well and now I'm currently working with Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019. Great to see how this game has come so far and how it continues to grow to this day. Nice video as always, man!
Here in Brazil, Trainz was very successful between 2009 and 2012 and I am an administrator of the Trainz Brazil Forum, which had thousands of members and is now completely erased ... My first train simulator was exactly the Trainz was the 2010, which I bought of a street vendor, without knowing anything about him and after him my story started on Trainz. It is a passion that I cannot explain, I already had all the simulators, but Trainz is my favorite, by far, mainly for its spectacular ability to create routes and the multitude of assets created by the fans. I hope that one day it will be as popular here again, as it has been in the past.
It’s... beautiful!! Well done. I grew up watching trainz videos on TH-cam. I’ve had trainz: A new era for about for 5 years. So being honest I didn’t really get into trainz in till about late 2018. I have TRS19 now and I am so happy with it. Not to mention that you was a huge part, with the Trainz videos on your TH-cam channel. Thanks for the memories.
Being somebody who is fascinated by Trainz's History, this Video is really wonderful. Though there are some small Details that I think would smoothen out the Video a bit (like how the Idea of a Virtual Model Railroad Game came to Greg's Mind, or how the original Publishers of the Game lost the rights to it after an Incident), this is truly a great and well-researched Video. There aren't too many Videos explaining the History and Legacy of Trainz, so seeing this really brought a Smile to my Face. Keep up the good Content my Man.
As an aussie from queensland who grew up seeing the classic red and yellow livery diesels, and having your father litterally work for the railway, those old versions of trainz are extremely nostalgic looking to me.
I must admit that I'm a huge fan of Trainz. I started out with Trainz 2004 although I had both MSTS and Trainz on my computer at that time, I quickly realized that Trainz was the far superior product, and I thoroughly enjoyed the skills it gave me to create my own layouts, and later modify other creators layouts to my needs. I still use it at least once a week but I should admit here that the sessions do last for hours and hours, I get that engrossed in it.
Wow... the time it took to make this into one video... awesome video man! An honest thank you to the community as well. Thank you for making this video :D
I'm not a gamer or a modeler, but I discovered Trainz around 2019. Now I'm glad to understand how it all came about. I'm still amazed at the realistic work on freight cars especially. 10-19-21 St. Joseph, MO (Age. 77)
When i was 7 or 8 yrs old.. my very first trainz was TRS2004, me and my dad just installed it in an old laptop and we got much fun running in the Robe River Iron route, then we moved to TRS2006.. very great memories playing!
The original Trainz Driver was my childhood. Never realized how good the graphics had become until I got T:ANE thus past Christmas. Since then, I look back, and see how much things have gotten better.
I remember when I brought Trainz Railroad simulator 2006 when I was a young kid. it was a Big box release. it was a local train show too. lasted all the way till I got TANE. still have it years later . still have fond memories mucking around driving my own trains. usually the Packaged Northbay Route and Razorback country route before going to school. But I'll admit, Trainz 2019 is by far the best Trainz in my mind.
OMG! Thank you the creator of this video and TH-cam for bringing me this much nostalgia! I still own a big box version of the version 1.4 and a normal box version of the 2006 one! The sound effects of those games in this video made me shed a tear...
Very nicely done video, mate! A great history lesson for fans new and old. The clips with Thomas content make me smile - the Thomas community are really talented and dedicated people.😄👌🏿
I began playing trs 2004 when i was 7 years old, my dads bring the cd from a local yard sale and then installed the game in the computer, from that moment has been a total revolution in how I was obsessed with trains to this day and still pretty magical moment when i think of.
This is amazing, the history of Trainz is such a wonderful thing. Trainz iPad what my first trainz game, and trainz Max was my second, the I tested 2006, then 2012 and finally TANE and TRS2019
I've been playing Trainz since I was little. The Trainz Versions I played are, Trainz Driver Edition which is my first Trainz Game, Trainz 2006, Trainz Classics, Trainz 2009, Trainz 2010, The Mobile versions, Trainz 2012, and the one I'm currently using Trainz A New Era. I love Trainz I mean The very easy route builder, The Routes, The Trains, you named it.
I remember playing these games as a child. Grew up watching trains drive by. My window was facing 5 lines and I lived near sorting station so I saw many trains.
My biggest gripe with trainz is I started with the original trainz in 2001, and upgraded to 2004, and up to 2006, and then got out of it until T:ANE, but the problem is, it seems like the game takes more and more resources, stronger computer, but it still has original dependencies from 2000 that basically remain unchanged. I feel that either they should upgrade the original dependancies up to the new standards, or completely remove them all together and have them as only something you can add on if you want. And the click clack of rail joints has been the exact same annoying sound since the original. I honestly like the Train Simulator series by Kuju/Dovetail games, but still play Trainz from time to time
One thing which kinda misses here which is rather important: Starting with TS12, content from previous Trainz Versions was purged (except the content which was reused in new routes)
This was such an incredible video! The more I learn about Trainz, the more I regret my decision to have put so much money into Train Simulator lol! Maybe I’ll switch over at some point, but for now I feel obligated to stay just because a second year architecture student at RPI only has so much money... but anyways, love the content, and hope you are well! Stay healthy!
As someone who has closely worked with the dev team on various betas and the TRS19 release, it‘s nice to hear that something I love is also really appreciated by the community. u kinda forgot about TMR17 tho, but the video is great, thx!
@RatorLP. Fancy meeting you here. I recognize you from Beta testing. We also worked together on the recent MPS testing sessions. Man those were/are some great times. I also noticed that TMR17 was mostly skipped over. Maybe since it was basically a different version of T:ANE. Anyways, see you back at Testing sometime.
Trainz 2 on the IPad was my first trainz game, and a staple of my early childhood. So many years later, it is so awesome to see how far it's come and how much it's improved! Trainz will always have a special place in my heart.
A great Mini-Documentary on the railroading or railway game that we all know and love and are big parts of our childhood train videos and can't wait to see what new info to find during the Q&A
I feel guilty seeing this (trainz, a new era in particular) in Steam, and assuming it was the same deal as that other Railroad sim where you got one train with the game, and everything else cost a fortune (DCS Style). I'll have to put the new one on my watchlist. it looks fun.
I enjoy and still glad to be apart of this community of Trainz Simulator. Can't believe I am still in this community from the age of 5 all the way to now!
This for me is a heavy nostalgia video for me. That trains classic intro clip I haven't seen in years and my god did that take me back. I still have these disc for the trainz games, but I'm done and sticking to flight sims for now. Thanks you for the video and nostalgia
most may not know but there's a dedicated German version of trainz, and not the one listed there, there's 2 more in fact designed for the German community. one is pro train perfect based on trainz 2006 and the other is pro train perfect 2 based on trainz 2009. both of them are entirely in German. they're still good tho, they provide German routes exclusively and there might even be a translator, knowing that there were numerous times I imported models that had English name tags and they switched to German. they also have paid add-ons but they cost a ton even today but the built in add-ons are still fine enough both look exactly the same as their original games, only difference is they have their own models as well as the German language. it seemed that pro train perfect 2 was a sequel to the previous one because they had models routes and trains from there. now recently I tried to mix trainz 2009 and pro train perfect 2 by adding stuff into them, in trainz 2009 aspect, it actually worked with a couple errors like missing textures
Something I'm sad that was not mentioned was that original copies of Trainz 2004, had experimented with animated passengers that would walk onto the platform and into the passengers coaches and sit down. It was only noticeable on one map, a 'How to drive steam' tutorial. These animated passengers were quickly removed during the first patch. 2021 and (as far as I know) passengers are mainly still static.
Trainz: A New Era player here , used to play MSTS back in the day, but TANE, despite it being launched in 2015, still is better with mod selection, the surveyor feature and it working way better on my Win 10 PC.
I'm so used to watching histories of games and hearing of a dark turn in the history - Atari buying Roller Coaster tycoon, Bethesda releasing Fallout 76 - so I was expecting something like "but then they didn't deliver on the kickstarter promises at all." Props to these devs, they know what their people want and they're okay with not trying to grab some gigantic larger market. I've only played a trainz game on iOS, but maybe at some point I'll pick one of them up. I'm not keen though on having to buy $14 DLC to play with the American steam I want though.
I love Trainz and I will always love it I started playing on Trainz 2 but I got Trainz 2019 and I still play Trainz 2 too. I still have trouble with building terrain maps but I’m make my own map right now so I hope I get done it’s big and it may take me forever lol but trainz will always be a memory for me.
Indeed! TRS2006 is where my journey with Trainz started. I actually still have the original package and discs for it. To be sure, the nostalgia factor is strong with TRS2006.
@@NJP76 I feel you on that. TRS2006 was my intro to the Trainz brand. I still have the 5 CD case it came in, actually. Even after getting the newer games, I just haven't been able to get into the newer routes as much as the ten that were native to TRS2006.
A very enjoyable and informative video, agreed to that. I am not a part of the Trainz community but it was still very interesting and I might try and dabble in Trainz too. I am currently more of an Open Rails user (with Indian Railways MSTS content).
I had a Trainz iPad version on an iPad 2 when I was young, used to push a HST up to 200 MPH because I thought they were km/h, ahhhh.....the memories...
When I was younger, I really wanted to get Trainz 12. Unfortunately, the computers in our house at the time would have never been able to handle the stress from the game. Probably a good thing I didn’t get it then.
I've been playing Trainz since UTC so its always held a special place in my heart. It may not be the most realistic Train Sim, nor the most popular Train Sim but I love it for its customizability and user-friendly design. Its so easy to use and navigate - and Surveyor with its many tools allows you to easily to build your own route, something I found other Train Sims lack.
I bought Trainz back when it first came out. I was pleased to support it as an Indie title. My machine could run it alright, but the included content was pretty bare-bones. I was excited to see that there was a large community of mod makers out there for it, however my excitement turned sour when i found that they all expected to make big bucks on it. Free content was hard to find, and the paid content was endless repaints of the same stuff. Additionally the paid contenct was all interdependent on eachother. Youd buy one thing & then have to buy 5 more things to make it work, and of those 5 things, 3 or 4 of them would have some other dependency you had to pay for. I think i spent about 50 or 60 dollars on 3rd party content & never did get any of it to work. It all felt like a scam. In the end Trainz wound up sitting on the shelf while i played MSTS. I bought it again when Trainz2004 came out, hoping the new version would have enough 1st party content to be fun, but alas that didnt seem to be the case either. The 3rd party content system had gotten even more confusing and convoluted (and expensive). After that i stopped paying attention to the franchise. I often use it as an example of how paid content creation can totally ruin an online community and make a game an unusable mess.
So good to see :) Regards Greg Lane.

What a nostalgia, this was my childhood, going through 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2012, it was a great experience. Hell, I might take a look into it again.
Wow, I never knew there was no doppler effect before TS12! Trainz's history is astounding, I've always loved the game!
I remember I first played in 2013 and it was trainz 2009. it's still a while ago today
Trainz 2006 made some of my fondest childhood memories. Hawes Junction was always my go-to map after a day of school!
I have a laptop that handles Trainz 19 and TANE
Turn off the shadow and it may run smoothly.
I got TANE for my low end and it performs poorly, so I haven’t touched it for a very long time until I get an upgrade
@@pennsy6755 Me too! TRS2006/TC was an absolute game changer for 7 year old me
I should play this again, it's been awhile
Do it NOW
I'm still playing Trainz 2006,2009 and Trainz 12
@@jhaycobumpad7340 same
@@re57k A while ago I've downloaded Trainz 2010 but nah the 2006 is the best of all times before I just have the demo version when I was young then after I have the 2009 and now that I'm already old enough I now have both versions except TANE
@@jhaycobumpad7340 Sadly, I only have 2009 because of Auran's TS2009 giveaway
damn, I remember my grandma getting me a copy of Trainz driver edition when I was like 6 or 7, so many good memories on that game
I also had my childhood on the Trainz mobile game! I was really impressed with my own routes that I made.
Good video! I am honestly so glad Trainz is a game I can play. I’ve been playing for a decade now and I will continue to play for another decade!
@@NJP76 Very interesting!
Been playing since Trainz 2004. Can’t believe that the franchise is as old as I am and it’s great to see how far its come. Here’s to another 20 years!
I'm one of the Thomas creators (if it wasn't obvious) and if it wasn't got TS I wouldn't be were I am now..
Thank you so much to those who joined together to make this amazing game and amazing community
I got to the whole Trainz craze very late, buying my first game last year. Thanks for catching me up on all this history.
Trainz 12 was my first Trainz game as well and now I'm currently working with Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019. Great to see how this game has come so far and how it continues to grow to this day. Nice video as always, man!
Awesome, never realized how nostalgic I am for TS2010 until now lol
I am still using 2009
Good times man.. good times
MSTS Is my childhood! Man i love that game
Awesome job on this!
I used to have trains 2006 when I was younger, it is amazing how we have evolved from this to that.
Wow... the time it took to make this into one video... awesome video man!
I feel absolutely honored to have Hungary into Trainz 12 actually that was my first Trainz game too! :D
You are extremely underrated. This video is so good made, edited and filmed! I like this video a lot!
Even though I never played trainz railway simulator I'm sure it's a great Game! Love these commentary videos you make btw
Also sad to see much community content gone from the old Trainz days, because many forums are no longer existing anymore.
Trainz 2006 stole my hearth. I've purchased all editions since then and I was a T:ANE backer.
@@NJP76 what a small World hahaha
@@RatorLP Sure is, LOL. I also saw Joe (Approach Medium) in here somewhere. Looks like I am in a good crowd here.
Trainz 2 on the IPad was my first trainz game, and a staple of my early childhood. So many years later, it is so awesome to see how far it's come and how much it's improved! Trainz will always have a special place in my heart.
Trainz is by far my favorite railroading simulator out there thanks Auran for making the best simulator over the last 20 years!
Finally a proper video showcasing the evolution of my favourite train game out there!
History of Train Simulator when? And the reasoning for the $16,000+ dollars worth of DLC?
A great Mini-Documentary on the railroading or railway game that we all know and love and are big parts of our childhood train videos and can't wait to see what new info to find during the Q&A
Feels glad to be a gen z and see my childhood grow...tysm dood for making this video! Both MTS and Trainz are my childhood 😁
My first trainz game was trainz a new era. I love it and now that I know more about the community I'm sure I'll get more involved
Thanks to everyone who made trains and the community for making the stuff they make, especially the TTTE content!
A new Trainz game is being released soon called Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022 5:49
I feel guilty seeing this (trainz, a new era in particular) in Steam, and assuming it was the same deal as that other Railroad sim where you got one train with the game, and everything else cost a fortune (DCS Style).
I'll have to put the new one on my watchlist. it looks fun.
(edit, okay, it DOES have a bit of the DCS going on too, but you can still download older models, so)
Oh yes, I think I hear some Sonic Colours Music, well done for reviving these underrated masterpieces.
This video is so good! The presentation is great and I loved all the Sonic music. Keep it up!
Dan at 8:47, Grant and Craig at 10:35 from San Juan Branchline! David at 18:52 and Avery at 18:56 from Marysville Railroad Series!
most may not know but there's a dedicated German version of trainz, and not the one listed there, there's 2 more in fact designed for the German community.
one is pro train perfect based on trainz 2006 and the other is pro train perfect 2 based on trainz 2009. both of them are entirely in German. they're still good tho, they provide German routes exclusively and there might even be a translator, knowing that there were numerous times I imported models that had English name tags and they switched to German. they also have paid add-ons but they cost a ton even today but the built in add-ons are still fine enough
both look exactly the same as their original games, only difference is they have their own models as well as the German language. it seemed that pro train perfect 2 was a sequel to the previous one because they had models routes and trains from there.
now recently I tried to mix trainz 2009 and pro train perfect 2 by adding stuff into them, in trainz 2009 aspect, it actually worked with a couple errors like missing textures
I really needed this. Thank you so much AmtrakGuy365!
I'm so used to watching histories of games and hearing of a dark turn in the history - Atari buying Roller Coaster tycoon, Bethesda releasing Fallout 76 - so I was expecting something like "but then they didn't deliver on the kickstarter promises at all."
Props to these devs, they know what their people want and they're okay with not trying to grab some gigantic larger market. I've only played a trainz game on iOS, but maybe at some point I'll pick one of them up. I'm not keen though on having to buy $14 DLC to play with the American steam I want though.
still have utc and 2006 in 2012..............great favourites...........well done Auran...........
This was an interesting watch. Great job!
The Trainz 2006 is too nostalgic
When some one say's: Video games are violent!
I will show them this game.
Funny how I'm an almost 100% Railworks/TS2021 user and still enjoyed this video thoroughly.
A very enjoyable and informative video, agreed to that. I am not a part of the Trainz community but it was still very interesting and I might try and dabble in Trainz too. I am currently more of an Open Rails user (with Indian Railways MSTS content).
"The new Game engine was called E2"

I had a Trainz iPad version on an iPad 2 when I was young, used to push a HST up to 200 MPH because I thought they were km/h, ahhhh.....the memories...
This was very informative and very nostalgic for folks like me! Very well put together.
Ultimate collection with the paint shed and 2006 is what got me into trains as a kid. Still play to this day
When I was younger, I really wanted to get Trainz 12. Unfortunately, the computers in our house at the time would have never been able to handle the stress from the game. Probably a good thing I didn’t get it then.
25:40 - Henry would approve of this change
These games are amazing! So yesterday... I decided to rekindle my childhood memories from when I had TRS2006. And got Trainz: A New Era
Trainz with Train Simulator physics and a lot of graphic improvement would be the perfect sim
