I always wondered how it was possible that Prey was an excellent Figaro (of Rossini) AND gave the best and most passionate and tragic performance of the Dichterliebe. I feel that this cycle must have meant something special for him. And now I see both performances on the same page of TH-cam!
Beside Hans Hotter, Hermann Prey is the only baritone, who can compete the tenors Aksel Schiøtz and Fritz Wunderlich when it comes to Dichterliebe, the most romantic of all song-cycles. Hokanson plays the piano with virtuosity.
So am I! In general, performers such as actors and singers avoid the use of their hands for fear of the audience's reactions; but Prey always uses them quite aesthetically - because quite naturally, I suppose...
