Fantastic, masterful performance! i LOVE his performance "Ich grolle nicht." He completely sustains the tone and intensity throughout this slower-than-usual performance--a real feat. And the emotional crescendo creates a stunning climax.
I think this is one of the best versions of Ich grolle nicht on TH-cam, regardless of past comments. It is certainly superior than the laughably brisk Wunderlich rendition. I find it relatively vocally sound. My complaint lies with the pianist who fails to discover the nuance and beauty of the piano part and heavy-handedly plows along. Dommage!
Actually I think he may get closer to the text than the standard one dimensional angry man interpretation. Yes its more introspective, but the song is about restraint in the face of heartbreak and realization that the torment of a dream which reveals the imperfection of his love. He is also faithful to the composer's markings; except perhaps in tempo.
@kopczas I admit the recording with Karl Engel is fabulous, but I thought this pianist did a rather good job creating a very intimate mood. What don't you like about him?
I generally don't like when opera singers sing lied because it's often with the same kind of histrionics required for opera. But Prey has proven himself an excellent lied singer by virtue of his sensitive interpretation and vocal restraint.
To Antillas636 You are right: 1989 is an evident number mix-up (89 for 98). As regards the other matter, after seeing the videos I have mentioned (Graf Eberstein, Der Feuerreiter, etc.), I was convinced that HP has suffered from an illness that progressively have take him to his death (really, he can hardly stand). But, if it is not like that, Im sorry by my mistake, and I thank you for your explanation.
Hermann Prey was an fabulous bariton but, in my opinion, he was here already ill. For example, look in TH-cam, Prey's "Graf Eberstein" and other Lieder from the same performance: his illness is obvious, despite his voice is still very good. Hermann Prey died in 1989.
Great singer, but Ich grolle nicht is too slow, had to speed it up to 1.5. Heine's poetry is lacerating, sardonic, no precious bathos here, often sings of unrequited love. As I like to say, hate is love gone sour.
This is definitely a gem for Hermann Prey fans - but I totally agree: Ich grolle nicht - is hmm - bizarre, strange, intellectual, without passion, misunderstood, based on an idea - and not the idea of the lied, I'm afraid... sorry Hermann - sorry fans - sorry Schumann

What an ideal, intimate setting for lieder!

Thanks for uploading this. Great singing but IMHO the accompaniment is rather pedestrian...

you're the only one who cares
It's not Norsk. It's Danish :)
Lol ... norsk subtitles. :)
Am I the only one who notices that he screws up the climax of this having to get off of the high note too quickly because he doesn't quite make it?
good interpretation...but "Ich grolle nicht" is a tad too slow for my taste.
don't like...no emotion!
