No, Prey was not a tweener, but instead a mainstream lyric baritone. He did do very well as Beckmeser, Wagner's highest baritone part, which requires a sustained, unfakeable high A. But he also excelled as Mozart's Figaro, which has much of the bass in it.
It really was quite remarkable the bass color he possessed while still being a lyric baritone. If he would have been trained differently, he might have excelled at Verdi, we never know…
@moishemillerr It's a very good thing he never went in for Verdi. Many baritones who invest heavily in Verdi are washed-up or badly over the hill by age 50. Examples included Ruffo, Tibbett, Milnes, MacNeil; and Warren would have been had the Grim Reaper not whisked him away in the nick of time. By singing a less omnivorous repertoire, Prey was able to sing as long as he lived, to age 69.
@@andrewmargrave7518 I would't agree with you completely. If sung right, Verdi is actually quite good for the voice! Warren was in splendid voice till his death. His late Macbeth recording actually holds one his findest singing. Tibbet's decline stemmed more from his drinking than singing Verdi.

Hermann Prey is not a bass-baritone xD
On his own admission he almost became a tenor. He was a rare lyric baritone.
