In 2003 my dad found the ps1 version in his work and bring back home. We were absolutely in love with it playing everyday for years, it's one of my foundest memories from that time. We were struggling to make a living and when we played Colin McRae was really one of the best times I've ever had with my old man. I sent my dad this video and he still remembers and this will be a forever bond between my father and I.

7:30 The red glow effect lighting up the mud and the rear of the car is incredible - how did they do that? Is it a simple as a texture swap, because if so, the artist did an amazing job. It has to be a tint effect on the texture in VRAM, because the mud is dynamic.

Remember getting the bus into the city in summer '98 and picking up Colin Mcrae Rally in a small indie game shop (now long gone) Think I bought a dualshock controller as well. We all went back to my place that evening and were blown away by the graphics and feel of it, especially the constantly rumblimg controller. Such great times, young, carefree and happy.
Cracking video and nice little tribute to the Legend at the end. I grew up playing this and 2.0 and with playing DiRT Rally since early access release, Rally 2.0 and EA Sports WRC. It got me in the mood to play the older games again so downloaded them on my laptop and still alot of fun.

Ah, Colin McRae. The man who killed 2 kids, and had he survived, would still be in jail today for vehicular manslaughter. He even took his son's friend; Ben, without his parents' permission ! Plus his license to fly expired 2 years earlier.
I lived for this game. I almost knew the NZ, Australian and UK stages by heart. I still have my original release PS1 copy with the limited edition poster in it. It was such a significant game and made V-Rally feel the lightweight arcade game it was. I won the championship in each of the 4WD cars, but usually chose the Corolla so I could win the 1998 championship for Carlos. I see most videos on this game nowadays using a North American copy of the game because the Subaru has the 'swishes' from 1999 onwards rather than the stylised 555 'swishes' used in the 1998 season (that the original PS1 version had).

Great video, short and snappy and put together very well. Just came across this thanks to YT recommendations. I loved the original game and it kicked off one of my favourite racing series' of all time (Alongside the Driver series) The sequel did blow this one out of the water however the original definitely did it right when starting a new series, I've still got a huge love for this game even today and as someone who has done several hundreds of hours worth of speedrunning this too it definitely goes down as one of my Top 5 racing games of all time. To give further feedback, I've seen that you covered several games already including Crash of the Titans (A game I am also very fond of) so it'll be interesting to see what other games you do going forward. Keep it up man :)

What a blast to play, back in the day. Center pivot physics were something that turned me off, but once you get the hang of it, its alright for a rallying game. One thing that no one really mentions: Codemasters used to have such a great UI design as seen in this game and in general until the more recent games where the menus became very generic. CMR 2 - CMR 2005 had a very minimalistic but stylished approach. The first 2 race driver games and dirt 2 had and interactive office/trailer and grids menu was basically set in a pit garage. Hope EA's influence wont strip away this quirk of Codemasters.
I hope they keep the algorithm this way every 4th or 5th recommended video is from some of you smaller yters which I find and subscribe to with topics in which I am interested.

I don't know how I got it, but I played it a fair bit and my uncle, who was into racing and cars, taught me a bit about how to set up the car for different conditions, especially the suspension, which improved the driving performance a lot. What a game for its time and easily my favourite racing game (even though I'm still not sure on the exact version). Years later I got my hands on a copy of a new version on console and it just wasn't the same.
This game does indeed have rain and it really made a difference to the handling. I personally found cars in CMR easier to control in the rain, and also a lot more fun to play with. The newer versions are great for hardcore rally fans in my opinion, but incredibly hard for the rest of us casual gamers 😂
I've beaten this classic like 20 times past these 25 years or so. I love the PC version the most but sadly with each new Windows OS there's always a new challenge to make it run. I don't like the rough 24 fps on the PS1 version. PC is smooth as butter and great fun. The physics aren't realistic but they're insanely fun. Next best thing is Rally Trophy, and Mobil 1 Rally Championship my two other favs of all time. Edit: Oh and I almost forgot. Night states are just plainly bad. It would have been a perfect gem if it hadn't been for those nearly undriveable night stages.
I own another version, the "colin mcrae rally bestseller no.1" when there is a subaru impreza 22b (totally blue) instead of impreza wrc. Rally of austria instead of monte carlo and another little differences, by the way the gameplay is the same
@RetroSamBam Regarding differences, the PC version also has another 2WD car for use in Novice difficulty. Namely, the Renault Megane It also has two hidden cars only accessible through cheats

I hope codemasters wont be the next studio EA will shut down once their became unprofitable due to EA's own bad Business decisions. The list of good Studios killed by EA is long, here are some examples: - Westwood (known for Command and Conquer) - Pandemic ( Star wars Battlefront, Mercenaries) - Origin ( Wing Commander, Ultima ) - Bullfrog ( Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper )
