But word was spreading fast about a little game called Winning Eleven 3 (ISS 98 in the west), that I wasn't able to play because I didn't have a PSX, nor friends who owned it. A while later my little brother got one, and by then WE4 was out. I fell in love with it, so much I upgraded my PC with the sole objective of playing it through Virtual Game Station (a legendary PSX emulator, that even won a legal battle against Sony). So FIFA 98 was a very well done game, in retrospective though, WE3 was way better. To answer your question, ISS Pro Evolution is one of the games I played the most in my entire life. I played it for years, until the first native WE game for PC was released (WE7). I also played WE 2000 U23 and 2002, but these aimed to be more "realistic" by adding more randomness, IMHO this resulted in worse gameplay compared to WE4/ISSPE.

ISS was way better imo. I never liked Fifa as a kid as it was too arcadey. I was about 12 years old and wanted realism so when ISS 98 came along i was hooked.
Great video which really showcases the game. I was lucky enough to get a PS1 for Christmas in 1997 and FIFA '98 was the first game I bought for it. Loved the ease of gameplay and the indoor 5-a-side option, as well as the licensed teams and qualifying for the World Cup. Then a few months later, a demo appeared on the Official PlayStation Magazine for ISS Pro '98 and I was immediately hooked - spent hours playing that demo trying to beat Brazil as France. Got the game for Christmas 1998 and forgot all about FIFA.
I loved ISS Pro 98. Fifa was crappy button bashing whereas ISS allowed you to run past players and create opportunities. It was way more fun. I went ont to play Pro Evolutions Soccer 2 also. The legendary player, Claudio Cannigia, was an amazing player to play on the wing. He would glide past the oppostion to set up many opportunities for your strikers.
This game was easily the best of its time, waaaay ahead of Fifa, and the franchise continued to be until about Fifa 11/12. Me and my Dad had so much fun playing this, thank you for the hit of nostalgia!
I never played this game, but did play International Superstar Soccer Deluxe on the SNES - A LOT. It was much harder to score goals in open play - the easiest way was to run down the wing and then do a sort of sliding shot from the wing. If you timed it right, the ball would hit the underside of the crossbar and go in. ISS Pro 98 looks like a HUGE upgrade.
I never got to play ISS Deluxe on the SNES but can imagine it being a ton of fun! ISS Pro 98 feels very polished compared to its predecessor (on the PlayStation at least!). I would recommend giving it a go, it still feels great to play today 😁
Was that the one where you could curl the ball by pressing right/left on the dpad during set pieces? I remember playing one version where you could score straight from the corner.
@@mesicek7That’s right, in ISS Deluxe you could bent your shots, corners etc. It had everything. It’s the perfect football game of the 2D era. Way better than any FIFA and a huge upgrade to its predecessor ISS (without Deluxe).
For me, from around 1997 it took until about 2012 for FIFA to even come close, and 2014 was the first time I ever thought "this is markedly better". Everything PES1 through PES9 were unparalleled.
Essentially fifa was so bad at one point they pretty much decided to copy and paste pro evo style, then it became playable until PE slipped a little then fifa took the crown
Amazing. Need to go back to this. We used to have bespoke tournaments in our office (it was a games dev). Miss the days of getting early copies of Winning Eleven and 'smashee speedo' commentary.
I was old enough for FIFA 98. I can't say it enough, but it was revolutionary by the standards of the time. ISS Pro (or Winning 11) at the time was amazing too. That being said, the gameplay of both were soooooooo different to each other that it just felt like 2 different games. Eventually FIFA and later on PES got close enough in terms of gameplay in early-2000's...and that's where the true rivalry started. Brilliant video ⚽⚽⚽⚽⚽
ISS 98 on N64 was fantastic, way better than FIFA 98 and 99. Something very fun was that it got a create players mode with random attributes, so if you tried a million times you could get players once in a while with perfect or almost perfect values 😂
The series really was awesome! It's such a shame that it dropped off... Thinking about it now though, I can't remember how 🤔 The rivalry between the two games was legendary
The manual passing and shooting on the N64 version made it a completely different game to me and set it head and shoulders above FIFA. Where the game almost dictated the through ball / pass / shot for you normally taking the manual option made the game so much more realistic (I appreciate looking at the graphics now that seems implausible 😂)
I never played the N64 version, but do remember manual passing in Pro Evo. It was always fun to annoy friends with once mastered 😂 I'm guessing it was the same in this 😁
The N64 and PlayStation versions of ISS were actually totally different games made by different development teams, the N64 version was a little more arcade-like than ISS on the PSX. The N64 version had 3 releases 64, 98 and 2000. It got at least one game on the GameCube before being canned. The development team behind the PSX version went on to make the PS2 versions of ProEvo iirc. Kinda wild to me that Konami back then had two dev teams doing 2 different football games!
The N64 version, although it looks terrible these days, was just mind blowing at the time. The extra buttons on the N64 controller made the control scheme really deep but still really accessible. The ability to juggle the ball and flick it over the heads of defenders as a way to beat a packed defence was just not seen in other games of the time. The amazing flying headers from corners were always a joy, and the brilliant scenario mode, using real life game situations was just so much fun.
I always see people talk about ISS 98, which admittedly was fucking amazing, but nobody ever seems to talk about ISS2000, which as best I could tell was better in every way. It even has a good, if not kinda weird, career mode.
Same feeling, that everyone only talks about '98. I had '64 and '00 Versions and I liked both. I even mastered the career mode with several players with the best possible stats.
@@StrongandConditionedthat mechanic has never been bettered. Neither has the dummy on the goalie and the centre back, the dummy letting the ball pass through your legs, fighting to win/defend a header at a corner, slide tackles, double square for chip, volleying, half volleying, the refereeing, I could go on.
Great video, this was such a fun watch! Soo many memories came flooding back 😭 I still use PES controls to this day even with the recent domination of FIFA, that’s how ‘foundational’ it is to my football gaming lol
FIFA never become truly playable until it ripped off the ISS Pro games button scheme. Konami had EA’s number for years with ISS, ISS Pro Evolution and then Pro Evolution Soccer, and if it wasn’t for licenses FIFA would have likely died long ago. Konami killed themselves with all the nonsense they’ve been doing the last decade or so.
What sold me were the ball challenges. In the old FIFA, the players would just pass through their opponents holding the ball. ISS had players on the ball trying to hold off their defending opponent when they’re beside them. Even the defenders would actually soft tackle the ball from the attacker.
This was the first game I ever bought on my N64. I always remember the substitution commentary 'fresh blood is coming on', always sounded like 'Bruce Lard is coming on' when I was 9. Great game.
ISS PRO 98 (Winning Eleven 3), ISS PRO EVOLUTION I (Winning Eleven 4) and ISS PRO EVOLUTION II (Winning Eleven 2000) are considered to be the start of the peak of Winning Eleven franchise.
Much better, early ISS Pro/Evo games so good. Names might not have been correct but player likenesses, through balls and general gameplay were so much better 👌🏻
I was way ahead with my N64, I got the Japanese J League version of the game before the PAL release came out. Pretty sure it played a bit faster as well at 60 hz.
I've watched a couple of your videos and I'm absolutely loving your work mate! You're pumping out videos of phenomenal quality and I've enjoyed every single one, keep smashing it Mate 👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🤝🏾
Does anyone remember Adidas Power Soccer? I loved the commentary quotes such as 'Whack!' , 'there's snow on the pitch' and the classic 'he took the man not the ball'.
Hah yes I do! The crazy power moves which were basically impossible to save. The goalie would catch the ball but still end up hopping backwards into the net. Do you recall the cheat which changed the commentary to two northern lasses? That was an amusing game, but not to be played as seriously as Pro Evo.
Great video. A groundbreaking game at the time, I loved the graphics, the players also felt so responsive but also the size of the players was bigger compared to other games then and they had a real physical element to them. You could also recognise individual players, it felt so colourful to me
good video, although it wasn't on n64. A separate development team within Konami (Konami Osaka) made a completely different game to the ps1 versions. The only similarity between the two games was the ISS branding and Ravanelli on the cover art looking like he's going to nut Paul Ince
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. Also, thanks for the extra info! Someone mentioned in the comments that the N64 version had manual passing as well which I don't think was on the PlayStation version.
International Superstar Soccer (ISS) metamorphosised into Winning Eleven then Pro Evolution Soccer (PES)… These made my childhood memories fun filled 🥰🤩
`I owned both this and FIFA 98 + RTWC, and this was way more fun. The archetypal goal in this was the overhead through ball and dinked finish, which was a little too easy. This was followed up by Evolution, which just took it all up another level. They had two different ISS games going at the same time for a bit, but Evolution was far superior.
The ability to dribble goalkeepers and score goals with a lob was, I believe unrivaled at the time. Didn't play FIFA back then in 98,99,2k though. Had many afternoons playing ISS Pro co op with a friend attempting to achieve a season without defeats and minimal draw matches
A friend and I would write down the scores which teams we were using and play at least one day of the weekend for 12 hours. (playing and drinking sessions) We'd build our own teams and bring them on our memory cards throughout the Pro Evo games. We were evenly matched with us generally being within a handful of games of each other after hitting 5k matches per version. I eventually went online won a lot of tournaments all those hours made for a strong foundation when playing other randoms online :) Ps when building a team to play my mate. I'd always sim the first five seasons then look at who's stats had improved and were still going up then sign all those players to my club team and make their stats rise even higher through playing against the computer. it was possible to go above 99 in some of the games :) (think I topped out Andy Carrol at 104 when he was a kid) XD
i was first introduced to the series in the summer of 94. A house party at a friends, i was 14, ISS on snes, id never played on a snes, i spent literally all night playing it against various people and had no interest in hitting on whatever girls were there. im now 43 and still love playing, although now i play pes 2020 with updated teams and kits form an ebay seller. konami have screwed up in my opinion going down the road of payed for online gimics. back in the day each new game, i would spend hours updating the teams and kits and club names as best i could, spending hour upon hour editing before id even consider playing a match. Pes is like a religion for me, but the faith is fading. one of the highlights of older games was being able to add your own chants for the crowds which was class, being a united fan and playing the game with the fans chanting, nemanja nemanja he comes from serbia, nemanja nemanja he'll f##king murder ya was hilarious. wouldn't get that in fifa!! they removed that option some years ago
That's amazing to read you've been playing since as far back as the SNES! Talking about spending hours and hours editing everything has unlocked a lovely memory for me. It was truly amazing just how customizable everything was in the series. The ability to edit everything in great detail from formations to even the teams badge was huge amounts of fun and definitely gave the series a certain warm charm that was never apparent in any of the Fifa games. It's a shame they removed the chants but they were brilliant when we had them 😂
me an my friends did the exact same !every time a new edition came out we would spend hours customising all the names an kits before we even kicked a ball! good times
sometimes I forget that youre a small channel right now since the games you decide to display can be quite interesting I wonder how long it will take for the algorythm to catch you up.
ISS Pro was miles better than FIFA. It didn't have the licenses but it had the gameplay. I would have both games and get bored of FIFA after a month. ISS Pro was addictive in winner stays on rules against the next player, offline.
Pro Evo 98 was CLASS!!! there was an African dude, forget his name, lightning quick. You could put him in your team and he'd outrun everyone. Used to get home from work, have a few spliffs, beers, bowl of peanuts, tunes on and play this until midnight.
There were so many great football options back in the late 90's, Konami and EA were at the forefront, sure, but Tecmo also released great soccer games, including a satire called Go! Go! Goal! for the Saturn, there was also Worldwide Soccer '97 and '98 on the Saturn, which are quite good. As for FIFA vs ISSSP98, there's no denying that EA's game is more simulation-focused, while Konami's efforts at the time aimed for a more arcade style, in my opinion, you could had played both games and enjoyed them equally, or in different ways, no wrongs there!
To be fair, FIFA RTWC 1998 was actually the first really good Fifa game. It just so happened that ISS was way ahead of the curve right from their 1997 debut - by 1998, you had 2 great football games with ISS being the better. By ISS Pro Evolution Soccer, there was only one clear winner. Many would argue that it wasn't until FIFA '09 or FIFA '10 that they regained the crown. Still some decent Pro Evo offerings during that time but the writing was on the wall...gutting to have no competition these days!
I remember geting ISS 2 in year 6. Then getting the first PES on my ps2.. family friend used to look after me and my brother and we would just play all night. Good times. Pes 4 was a game changed when you could edit the boots to look like nike ones 😂
Omg!!! I loved ISS pro games... My dad hated FIFA games and would only play ISS pro... I played them all back on the playstation... Even tho now I played FIFA, started playing FIFA 04... I can't shoot with cycle button... I have to change it to square... Pro Evo back then was amazing.. pro Evo 4 was the best, loved the gameplay, Aresnal had the best team
ISS had stamped its mark 2 yrs prior and they just got better better, I was terrible at this version, I sadly struggled to score despite being very good on the previous versions. By 2007 FIFA had certainly stepped up and gradually took over
Fun fact: there was a brazlian hacked version of the game on latin america that was popular that replaced some intro graphics and samples, it was known as "Ronaldinho soccer"

Dude, exactly the same for me! Was it the Best Sports Games of '99 edition?? That demo got played to death. Kept it for years lol
Yessss! Thr demo in the Official PlayStation magazine is where it started for me too!
Exactly. What an odd question.
lol yeh playing it with my step dad n mates
Beating him with Nigeria
Good years
@Snooker007 Nigeria were the best because of their pace, you just run past your opponents defence so easily 😃
Omg I have been trying to unlock this memory for years thank you ❤️
No worries! Thanks for watching 😁
I remember seeing this on the shelf at Xtra-Vision and renting it so many times. What a time it was
Ah, Xtravision. Loved the weekend rental rate. Finished so many games over a 2 night rental, saved £1000s!
I would recommend giving it a go, it still feels great to play today 😁
was there a Nintendo team to choose from that wore black? I'm sure there was
Was that the one where you could curl the ball by pressing right/left on the dpad during set pieces?
I remember playing one version where you could score straight from the corner.
@@louis84100No, that’s Super Soccer.
@@mesicek7That’s right, in ISS Deluxe you could bent your shots, corners etc. It had everything. It’s the perfect football game of the 2D era. Way better than any FIFA and a huge upgrade to its predecessor ISS (without Deluxe).
ISS 64 and ISS 98 were awesome games.
FIFA 99 PS1 equally impressive like ISS PRO 98 PS1 and Nintendo 64.
Had them both, ISS crushed FIFA.
Loved this game, I always played ISS and pro evo over fifa until PES dropped off
The series really was awesome! It's such a shame that it dropped off... Thinking about it now though, I can't remember how 🤔 The rivalry between the two games was legendary
Long live PES! Roberto Larcos!
Such memories. The emotions of the platters brings back fond memories indeed.
Fifa was no comparison to any ISS game until 2014 I think, maybe 2012.
Oh the penalty system on the N64 versions was actually brilliant
Jesus I never play this game on N64
The through ball mechanic was essential and really helped it stand apart. Such a great game
The lofted through ball as well which made its appearance in Pro 98. Pulling it off sent a rush of ecstasy through your spine
International superstar soccer 64 and 98 where way better than FIFA. Konami was far ahead.
ISS Pro was one of the best football games ever made. Today in comparison to present day football games, it brings simplicity and smoothness.
The electric guitar intro was so awesome!
Blew my mind back in 98, honesty in top 3 football games of all time.
I miss the days when soccer games were so Quick and fluid to control unlike modern games where your player has the grace of a sack of potatoes
What sold me were the ball challenges. In the old FIFA, the players would just pass through their opponents holding the ball. ISS had players on the ball trying to hold off their defending opponent when they’re beside them. Even the defenders would actually soft tackle the ball from the attacker.
Nostalgia overload 😂😂😂
This was the first game I ever bought on my N64. I always remember the substitution commentary 'fresh blood is coming on', always sounded like 'Bruce Lard is coming on' when I was 9. Great game.
Thank you for the laugh. 😂
This game was not on the N64
I wish somebody would remaster this
Paul inse 😂. Miles better than FIFA back then, give it to R9, absolutely class
I remember it. The german commentator with hilarious. 😂
Excellent review, really enjoyed that! 👏👏👏
Thanks for watching Trevor! Really glad you enjoyed it 😁
I was way ahead with my N64, I got the Japanese J League version of the game before the PAL release came out.
Thanks Cas, really appreciate it! glad to read that you're enjoying my videos 😁
That was an amusing game, but not to be played as seriously as Pro Evo.
loved IsS on PS1, but on N64 ISS 64 and ISS98 were completely different games, and even better, especially graphically on a different level of course
ISS and PES were way better than FIFA from 1995 till 2007.
Great video. A groundbreaking game at the time, I loved the graphics, the players also felt so responsive but also the size of the players was bigger compared to other games then and they had a real physical element to them. You could also recognise individual players, it felt so colourful to me
This game still looks solid they should remaster it
i was so happy playing this game. great video!
Thanks for watching 😁
Aw mate watching your videos is like going back in time to my childhood, love your stuff new subscriber 👍
Thanks for the sub! Glad you're enjoying the vids 😁
I was an iss pro/pro evo guy right up until the late 00s , ISS 98 was my favourite
good video, although it wasn't on n64.
Manual passing has always been an option. And still is.. today they are called FUMA players... Full Manual
International Superstar Soccer (ISS) metamorphosised into Winning Eleven then Pro Evolution Soccer (PES)… These made my childhood memories fun filled 🥰🤩
This looks more fun than any football game today
Loved this game on PS1. Gameplay was revolutionary
It crushed Fifa
The ability to dribble goalkeepers and score goals with a lob was, I believe unrivaled at the time. Didn't play FIFA back then in 98,99,2k though. Had many afternoons playing ISS Pro co op with a friend attempting to achieve a season without defeats and minimal draw matches
My god what a game this was absolute elite tier, another one of my favs from my childhood
I eventually went online won a lot of tournaments all those hours made for a strong foundation when playing other randoms online :)
Ps when building a team to play my mate. I'd always sim the first five seasons then look at who's stats had improved and were still going up then sign all those players to my club team and make their stats rise even higher through playing against the computer. it was possible to go above 99 in some of the games :) (think I topped out Andy Carrol at 104 when he was a kid) XD
I played this game three hours everyday in my childhood. Amazing game!
Not only was it fantastic, but it also came with a Metal Gear Solid demo. Great memories 👌
Good enough? It was wayyy better than fifa, gameplay wise.
i was first introduced to the series in the summer of 94.
It's a shame they removed the chants but they were brilliant when we had them 😂
The two ISS games on SNES and the one on PS were awesome. And that commentator...
me an my friends did the exact same !every time a new edition came out we would spend hours customising all the names an kits before we even kicked a ball! good times
Everyone had their own play styles - the gameplay was that fluid.
sometimes I forget that youre a small channel right now since the games you decide to display can be quite interesting I wonder how long it will take for the algorythm to catch you up.
Thanks Leonst, glad you're enjoying the videos 😁 hopefully the algorithm will catch up soon 🤞🏻
Brilliant video on an awesome game
Ahhh the memories probably one of the few original ps1 games I had before chipping and burning became all the rage
Wow.. this takes me back ..completely forgot how great this game actually was .
Great memories playing this. Real nostalgic!
I remember geting ISS 2 in year 6. Then getting the first PES on my ps2.. family friend used to look after me and my brother and we would just play all night. Good times. Pes 4 was a game changed when you could edit the boots to look like nike ones 😂
As a Brazilian I entered happy and forgot the name of the game had “98” written. I single tear dropped from my eyes at a certain point.
I've never liked football games... but Fifa 98 was the only one I absolutely loved. Crazy. It just had something about it
Iss was 100 times better than fifa
They were sooo good! ISS Pro 98 honestly still feels great to play today as well!
ISS had stamped its mark 2 yrs prior and they just got better better, I was terrible at this version, I sadly struggled to score despite being very good on the previous versions.
By 2007 FIFA had certainly stepped up and gradually took over
Iss Pes is the best ⚽
It really is sooo good!
Fun fact: there was a brazlian hacked version of the game on latin america that was popular that replaced some intro graphics and samples, it was known as "Ronaldinho soccer"
Peak footy gaming there. Pure flashbacks!!!😊
