Wow! I wasn’t expecting this when I clicked on this. This was great. I sound just like my mother and I hate it. Because she always spoke in a negative, judgmental, Debbie downer type of way. I’ve picked up poor social skills and it makes it hard for people to understand where I am coming from. I’ve been since trying to consciously be aware of how I’m talking or expressing my feelings to people without coming off “fake”. Thank you.
I’ve been struggling to change my tone of voice, but watching your video makes me believe it’s still possible to change my tone of voice. This was such great self help video! I’ll do my best to follow your 3 steps. Really glad I stumbled upon this.
The people around me are ignorant the world is full of lies. The truth is out there it is something you must seek. I really need this video because now that I know this I have to change the way I feel about it.
I have gotten into the habit of saying everything with a subtle insinuation of irony so much so that I have unintentionally offended people while trying to complement them. It’s not a problem when someone knows me and learns I’m a generally kind caring person. But with insecure strangers it can cause conflicts to erupt out of nowhere.
It’s a conscious choice. Tone can be either a reflection of your true emotions or a projection of a vision and mission. I’m a bilingual speaker. Tone varies depending if you speak your own mother tongue or secondary language, for work or social, under pressure/urgent situation etc. Tone carries your attitude. Be mindful especially now we work from home and engage more virtually.
This is so true and useful. I've been noticing over the years that my tone comes from my mindset, and I've been trying to be conscious of attitudes and habits that I carry with me in orden to try to change the way I talk. This video is so true.
Thanks to your videos I just realized that why others have issues with my tone. Whenever I am in a conflict my tone becomes authoritative and sound angry and rude to others. I didn't understand why it was happening when clearly it was not my intention. But now I realised it comes from fear and need to protect myself so no one can overpower me. Thank you so much. I will try to be mindful and try to think before speaking the way I speak.😊
Hi I just read your comment and honestly that's exactly how I come across to people and it's not my intentions to come across aggressive or anything and I just thought to myself maybe there's a program or something that can help change the tone of a person's voice and so I found this video well my question to you and I know this was 3 years ago that you posted this but hopefully you'll see this were you able to make progress and change like the way your tone came out I don't know how I'm trying to ask this question but basically were you able to get good results

This is interesting. I am generally anxious and excited and my voice is high and unsteady. I know my breath will help I need to take my meditation presence into social situations. This isn’t going to be easy but it’s time. Thanks 🙏🏽

Thank you so much sir I consider what is my fault and why am I not speaking English correctly and Now I check what is going on in my mind thank you so much for your videos ❤
This is a great video! I hope you're still around doing this type of work. After I lost someone, I stayed inside not communicating with anyone for about five years. I finally snapped out of it and am trying to regain my confidence. I do voiceover work now and am trying to get back to where I was about six years ago when I was a public speaker. I never thought it was possible for one to lose their voice and self. I lost both completely. I need them back!

Glad you enjoyed it, Sheena. I would say that you are not wrong. Most tutorials I've seen treat tone a bit superficially but there are some deeper things going on that drive it all.

So happy I came across this video. It helped me see I’m on the right track. I looked up the topic as a part of my morning mindfulness practice. It helped me get to the roots of my tone in conversations
I appreciate the way you explained the things that effect the tone of voice. I had been feeling tense from bad memories. Sensations would just come up anytime something reminds of the past. My heart would start beating fast, and I would feel defensive. Before I know it, my tone has changed; I'm still saying the same words that I would normally say... but the tone carried my message in another direction, and I would be perceived as blunt or harsh sometimes. I think I had gotten so used to texting or writing straightforward messages, and maybe I could be partially speaking how I type as well. I was disappointed in the direction some of my conversations would go because I didn't understand what I said wrong. Edit:TONE truly is key, and I realized that my head has to be in the right place for deeper talks so my tone of voices gives the right message. I am very glad to have a new perspective on the mindset I need to be in to carry on a pleasant conversation. Thank you.
This is an amazing video, Alex. Thank you for sharing. It is essentially taking it back to basics and I myself have noticed how mindset can change projection. Your company and environment will literally define who you are... And thank you for noting that it takes time to implement these changes. This helped me a lot. Keep it up!
Wow, this is deep Alex! So many things that you said made me remember certain situations in my life. For example, I have a friend who takes part in discussions by always asking great questions. Sometimes he even sounds a bit like a psychologist just to give you an idea. I really look up to him in this regards because I am often not calm enough in the inside to hold off my own opinions long enough to have these kinds of conversations as well. After all I really enjoy listening and learning from others this way. :) Cheers, Nico
@@alexanderlyon Thanks a lot Alex! Absolutely my pleasure. Your content really intrigued me at first glance so I had to take a closer look. :) Keep up the great work!
Thanks! I'll practice this advice because, I have a big problem with my family specially with my husband & son they always give me a comment but I know if i'm not a good mood & stress out it comes that voice I'll try to fix it.
Struggling a lot about the way I speak more specifically tone of my voice. 100% of the time I don’t mean to be rude or disrespectful but it’s just my voice people always misunderstood me. Gotta work it. This is really helpful Alex!
As a parent I needed this video so much! I have a 10yr old with Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder. It causes a super exaggerated fight or flight response to things that most people would not be affected by. For a very long time she would get more and more upset during situations she was in trouble because she felt I was yelling at her. I wasn’t and as she got older she was able to communicate it’s my tone. More specifically it’s my frustrated tone. Before all the haters start in, her brain is wired in a way that won’t change as quickly as I can change my tone. She is neurodiverse in other aspects too. Thank you so much for this video Coach Alex. Currently in college what I have realized after many years is that my tone of voice comes off angry and upset all the time. I was super outgoing and friendly but would always find myself being labeled as rude or mean even though I didn’t say things that were such. I guess what I’m trying to ask is with depression it is very hard to change my mindset, so how can I work more on my tone if my mindset will be changing at a slower pace?
Most mental health counseling helps if people stick with it. I obviously am not a medical professional but I have read that depression is not a life-long sentence and therapy works. If I were in your situation, I'd start by talking to a therapist.

my parents always tell me i have attitude and i sound irritated all the time but like i honestly do not hear it and idk how to control it. have u fixed ur tone?
The Problem here in this video is "Self-awareness". And that's my problem. Im just not aware of what i actually doing while people around me aware of it. - My emotion: when im not angry but my face looks like im angry. sometimes people say why im smiling when i dont really smile. - My voice: sometimes i raise my voice in the middle of conversation without knowing it myself. Self awareness is the key. I hope you are able to reflect on what exactly is going on in your mindset in those moments. It might be just a slight change in how you feel that is leading to those nonverbals you describe.
I am constantly told by my wife that I have a certain tone with her. I realize that this is the case and wonder if it is because I am a guilt-driven person and always critical of myself. I wonder if I am projecting my self-critical thoughts onto my wife. I also asked the question, '" My wife is blank." I realize that when she doesn't understand something, how to do something, or hear something that I think she should, I get short. I then ask myself, "Can I be like that?' and the answer is a solid yes. That gives me grace to know that the very thing that I struggle with she does too. Wow! What an insight! Thank you so much for your coaching
wow bro i really thank to you a lot. when i'm alone or with my friend i always have sweet kind calm tone. they always saying to me you're kind and wise. but when i;m in home or in community my tone is awful! cause i really don't like my family(their tone, how they are unreasonable, all of them are aggressive with no respect and horribly expecting me love them, saying nothing about their bad treats and how they are bad ) or most of the people. and i knew that is the reason of my bad tone. i'm happy you talked about it.
Thank you for this video! I've been told at work by my boss that he doesn't like my communication style through email. Do you have anything that helps with that? I consider myself to be more direct and don't want to obfuscate the important with needles details that may distract. My mother is super, uber direct and even I am uncomfortable with it. Also, this video reminded me of this: And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me-everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9 NLT Thanks again!
Email is easier, I think, because you can edit before you send. I don't have a video on that but I do frequently ask my wife to read important emails for tone to give me feedback so I can revise.
I speak softly and people often say I'm very soft spoken. While I was doing practice teaching as an early childhood educator, my mentor mentioned that I have to change my tone by putting energy. I have no idea how to even do that.
I told my husband all the time you remind me of my brother. Being rude from time to time, in other words he's tone of voice. Jesus I hope I'm not causing it.
Best explanation ever. I couldn’t figure out why my tone is different. I think I’m a bit too serious and intense, maybe because I run a business and it’s my life. But a person could be feminine still and run a business. I’m too stern with walls up to fight whatever comes my way.
Thank you for making that insightful connection between the mind and the voice. I am a voice coach in Ottawa and teach this concept to my clients as well. I can see from the comments below that this kind of knowledge is very much needed!
This is a great video! You covered a lot of important points in a few, short minutes. You connected a lot of dots and gave people actionable steps forward.
I keep being told to sound like 'a person' and I just don't know how to sound like anything other than myself. I specifically searched for your video for this reason. Thanks.
I can relate to what you are saying. In order words, one has to do a lot of thinking before speaking. I grew up with a quarrelling aunt. I feel some of it has affected me in the anger department.

I speak softly and people often say I'm very soft spoken. While I was doing practice teaching as an early childhood educator, my mentor mentioned that I have to change my tone by putting energy. I have no idea how to even do that.
If I were you, I'd work mostly on speaking a bit more loudly. Usually, an increase in volume will also provide your tone more variety and energy.
I’m definitely a rusher, working on it, and it shows in my tone lol
Thanks for the awareness, the first step towards change.
Yes, and then be patient with yourself. Changing our tone is a long-term process.
Never thought about habits but wow... so true actually!! Thank you so much for affirming that Alex.
I told my husband all the time you remind me of my brother. Being rude from time to time, in other words he's tone of voice. Jesus I hope I'm not causing it.
Great video thank you so much.
This was super helpful man, thank you! God Bless your soul.
You're welcome, Raul. God bless you too.
I never thought about how we pick up communication habits, the same as trauma. Now that I see it, I cannot unsee it anymore.
Thank you!! Very helpful.
Thanks for the great videos Alex. Very helpful.

I've been valuing your videos and guidance a great deal. Thank you for providing the skills and inviting the introspection...
Glad to help, J H.
Best explanation ever. I couldn’t figure out why my tone is different. I think I’m a bit too serious and intense, maybe because I run a business and it’s my life. But a person could be feminine still and run a business. I’m too stern with walls up to fight whatever comes my way.
Me too!!!
And this advice is free! Wow bless you!
Thank you, Massa. Bless you, too!
This is so valuable, thank you!
Thank you for making that insightful connection between the mind and the voice. I am a voice coach in Ottawa and teach this concept to my clients as well. I can see from the comments below that this kind of knowledge is very much needed!

I keep being told to sound like 'a person' and I just don't know how to sound like anything other than myself. I specifically searched for your video for this reason. Thanks.

Great suggestion!
Great!!! Thanks!
Thanks a lot I never thought that tone can be connected with mindset 🤗🤗
Been looking for something like this for ages! Thank you
Glad I could help and I'm glad you found the channel.
I can relate to what you are saying. In order words, one has to do a lot of thinking before speaking. I grew up with a quarrelling aunt. I feel some of it has affected me in the anger department.
Thank you Coach Alex, I really need this. At work my tone seems to come off as irreverent and I have been trying to fix it. I really hope this helps
Thank you coach you really helped, bless you!
You are so welcome!
