Army veteran is perfect match for girl with leukemia

- Army veteran Mike Laureano didn’t stop saving lives when he got out of the Delaware National Guard. Thanks to a decision to sign up for Be The Match, he’s the reason a seven-year-old in Utah is here today.
The twenty-nine-year-old recalls, “I was going to class, and there was a table set up for Be The Match. I walked by, and they said, ‘Hey come over here,' so I walked over. They were looking for donors. I knew nothing about the organization prior.’”
After a quick cheek swab, Laureano continued on to his class at Wilmington University.
“The expectation was one out of every four hundred individuals is actually a match. In my mind, I pretty much just thought that if I did happen to match somebody, it was meant to be.”
Sure enough, in 2015, he got the call confirming it was meant to be. Laureano was a perfect match for a little girl with leukemia.

Children dying in this world is one of the worst things. They havent done anything wrong yet, they havent had a chance to grow up and building a own personality, to experience life and so much more. To take that away from them or have a illness take it away, is sad.
Seeing a video like this is one of the few things that makes me feel like realllyyy happy, because u know that a child has gotten the chance to life his/her life.
There is one thing better, getting a hug from that little girl where she lays her head on your shoulder! And then one from the twin sister to boot! I'd give a lung and a kidney for those hugs.
This story is what encouraged me to sign up for Be The Match. I'll be more than happy to donate if I match to anyone.
I've been on the list for almost 20 years. I've never been called. But, if I get a call tomorrow, I will be there in a flash.

@@arin4958 Do it. And you can also donate platelets. They are desperately needed in treating many diseases. I've never been called to donate marrow but I donate platelets. One time, I was leaving St. Jude after making a donation. I saw a woman that I had gone to high school with. She had a baby that was a patient at St. Jude being treated for SCID (bubble boy disease) She was in dire need of platelets. Turns out I was an exact match for her daughter. That baby girl grew up healthy and recently got married.

Sobbing. What a beautiful example of what a serviceman or woman should strive to be. What a beautiful, grateful and sweet little angel of a girl. Boy am I glad that no one can see me right now. As a veteran myself, I don't like to emotionally cry.
Let's be honest: she is so cute my heart melted.
No kidding man I never cry but she’s such a beautiful child and you can tell how grateful she is. Wish this was the reality for every child with life altering disease. Thank you to that man.

When you have a seven year old child, whom you don't even expect to be able to fully comprehend something like this, yet she teaches us what it truly means to have gratitude.
Its mesmerizing how the mature little girl not only understands the gravity of the saving the man did but also how she showed her gratitude and love!

Indeed. But I was wondering where the little girls father was in this story. They only interviewed the mother and child. The other man in the picture is probably the Donors friend that they spoke of that made the drive from Delaware.
Either the father didn't want to be on camera to be interviewed or he died. Or abandoned the family.

How about this young lady's gratitude attitude. She knew and understood well what she went through and that right kind of respond melted my heart. So precious!!! I hope everybody can learn from this child's bravery and gratitude same as the guy donor's kindness and selflessness. Goid job to both!!! Praise God for everything!!!!

I had leukemia 8 years ago. I was 36 and it was aweful. I'm so sad that babbies have to go through this. I had an anonymous donor who I am met a year later. She is my hero. This organization is amazing. People who sign up to be donors are AMAZING!!
I wish you to be happy and healthy! Your donor must be a amazing person for donating and you a warrior for surviving.
My paternal grandmother is a brest cancer survivor and I am grateful to God and doctors for saving her. My maternal grandmother survived because someone with negative RH of her blood type donated her blood exactly when was needed ! Good people and doctors are heros!
After seeing a lot of videos, I decided tonight to become a bone marrow donor- because I’m a cancer survivor myself- and it hit me that I wanted to help those who were suffering like I once did and give back to those who need it most. I wanted it to be a way that I could give back to all the medical staff who helped save my life who can be able to save other lives also. I know I probably won’t get a match anything soon, but I’m proud of what I did and hope it can save a life or 2 one day. Thank you to all the amazing people who’ve given a part of them to save others! 💕

An update on Adriana:
She unfortunately relapsed a few months ago (June 2020). Her and Maiya turned 10 in February and just a few weeks ago she had her second bone marrow transplant, donated by her father.
So sad :( Is she an identical twin? If so, I wonder why they didn't use her twin's marrow. I pray this new transplant works.
@@yooneeque1 yes. They are identical, but because they are identical, maiya can’t donate because she could carry the gene that caused Adriana to have cancer. Her little brother (madden) was not a match for Adriana otherwise he would have donated.
@@elliehockman5281 That makes sense. I have heard of other cases in which the identical twin's marrow wasn't used b/c they wanted the donor marrow to fight and attack any new leukemia cells, and an identical twin's marrow wouldn't do that. (Graft vs. leukemia, I think.) I guess Mike can't be her donor a second time since she relapsed? Anyway, like I said, I pray the new transplant takes!
@@yooneeque1 yeah exactly! She’s actually doing okay right now. She’s battling GVHD (graft versus host disease) and that’s made her pretty sick, but as far as they can tell the second transplant is taking. Her dad, also named Mike funny enough, was the donor this time around. Parents are only half-matches so we’re hoping for the best.
Oh no, poor girl!! This must so sad for her twin too, i mean, not being able to save her. Let's pray she will recover, there's power in the name of JesusChrist. Thanks for the update and God bless!!

I thought about doing this a year ago but haven't done it yet. Now I think I will.. I'm 46 and man if this doesn't bring tears you have no soul. Not in a war and still serving this great country.

No matter how many times I watch this story, it still makes me teary-eyed. Everyone involved has my deep, deep respect. Unfortunately, I cannot donate blood, organs, or tissue due to my prior medical condition (something rhyming with "main answer"), but I can give my money, time, and presence, and hope that others will step up to give where I myself am unable.

this is one of my favourite videos ever, of any genre, children are so innocent and pure, uncorrupted, un-twisted, so to save the life of one sits atop of my bucket list, I have a donor card on me at all times, just in case my death is premature, Then I hope my organs save many lives, no matter what colour, religion, or sexual orientation the recipients are. The hug the little girl gave him must have meant the world to him, no matter what pain or discomfort he went through must have been worth it a trillion times over, god bless them all XXX

Great video, hits close to home as a veteran and marrow donor or myself. It's crazy after ten plus years of being enrolled in the DOD Marrow program I got the call. I didn't even remember I had done it, but didn't hesitate saying yes. It's one of the greatest feelings when the coordinator let's you know that your recipient had a successful surgery when receiving your marrow.

My son gave marrow to his baby sister 2 years ago, he will always be mine and my baby girls hero, he did a selfless thing to help his sister, he can be a meanie sometimes, but he was the first to step up and asked to be tested, but the doctors wanted to test my other daughter first, and when he found out that she was only a half match he was ready to be tested the same day lol, but we had to get appointments scheduled, and those appointments couldn’t have came fast enough for him. I think anyone who donates their marrow to save someone else is so amazing, and they are all hero’s.
