    I like the idea of a two year wait for the delivery of this. Order it and start the repayment plan now so that when it eventually gets delivered its already paid for so you can flog it for something useful.
    Or if you are getting on in years like wot I am, have it full spec but don't start paying until it's delivered and with any luck you will have snuffed it while still owing a wad so your kids get it paid for by the payment protection plan.

    In Australia the ultimate surfers car in 1968 was a 1960 ford falcon wagon it had a longer flatter roofline, better for surf racks. However my brother had a 1959 Chrysler Royal hearse because he could put the boards inside the car. Our stepmother was terrified of it.

      Whether it’s very hot or very cold, using the a/c or heater is going to lower your range. By how much is disputable but it must be at least 10% on average.

      Their's 2 electric heater units on a buzz, 1 for battery and 1 for cabin heating, between them they are nearly 20kw !,so yes they will make a difference to range .

    In 1966 I was 10 years old. But in 1984 (now there's a date which for some reason resonates) I bought a 1966 VW campervan. 2 tone orange and white, with split windscreen and 6v electrics! It had the full Devon conversion interior and was absolutely brilliant. I went all over the British Isles in it and kept it for about 3 years. Cost me then £800! Eventually though, keeping on top of the maintenance for it started to cost a bit too much and I sold it. How I wish I had kept it now. Looking at even a scrapper from back then now, they are going for £30K - £40K! And a minter now, probably around £60+k! So getting on for the same price as the new ID Buzz!

    Hi Geoff Glad you keep mentioning the mining issue and the child labour that allows it to happen . Seems many people are very selective when they say how good these EVs are in supposedly saving the planet . And assuming they do get their way and make everyone have electric cars , what cost will it have on those who are expected to provide the materials .       @@GeoffBuysCars Driving the mother in law back from Stansted via some lovely Essex back road countryside yesterday. Wife saying 'great scenery', but I was concentrating on avoiding potholes! I am thinking these heavy EVs with huge wheels and low profile tyres will not tolerate those holes very well. These things are only the future for the WEF masters and mass debaters

    @ £60-£70K, IT AINT A FAMILY CAR FOR YOUR AVERAGE WORKING FAMILY, but they don’t want the average working family to have a car anyway. P.S. at 3tons loaded, shouldn’t it VED atleast be £300 to pay for the wear and tear on the roads.

      A classic VW bus is actually cheaper than the iD Buzzlightyear. I would buy a classic any day over this as long as it still has its original engine and not a EV conversion.

    When i live in Plymouth, most of the surfers had either a transit type van or a Toyota Hilux Surf. The van had the benefit of being able to sleep in it. The only surfers who are going to buy these are the ridiculously wealthy type in Just Stop Oil and Extinction rebellion, when they aren't borrowing daddies Range or mummies XC90 that is.

    I absolutely agree with you concerning electric tailgates. You just don't need them! No matter if it's a BEV or an ICE. And think about this: if it's supposed to make it easier to close the tailgate, why are all the buttons placed in a way that you'll have to stretch your arm upwards anyway? The manufacturers should put the buttons for the electric mechanism somewhere at the side of the boot in the height of your hips...

      @@FullFact548 That's another problem with the electric tailgates. When you put quite a bit in the boot you never know if it really closes or because it slightly touches something in the trunk just opens up again. So you better wait until it's really closed...

    General,
    You wanna try being in a fully freighted modern artic @ 44t gvw when it thinks it's gonna rear end something even though its not.
    The thing bangs on 12 enormous air operated disc brakes bigger than your volvo wheels including the tyres while alarms going off and the whole dash and reflection in the windscreen goes red. Even worse while in the rain and going round a bend. 🤬😡
    If that buzz box gave you palpitations an angry artic would make you identify as a woman and give birth 😵‍💫😂🤣😂

    Reminds me of my 2009 Renault Scenic (that had a 1.9 diesel). I wrote this before I heard your comment about the Picasso! Awesome.

    Not the Picasso the Berlingo they are in 2 sizes 2007 (I think it is) they made them bigger, 60mpg for the diesel. More room than the Picasso same running gear. Pre 2007 they were about 12inches shorter. They have twin sliding doors and tailgate without electrics .Take a look at one.

    And trust me the first field this van goes in at 3 tones it will sink and be stuck boggy fields dont like 3 tone vehicles .Call the farmer and you cant tow them only a a lift so its stuck .please mention this next time thank you . .

      funny you should state that last month I went to Statfold Barn Railway near Tamworth and they parked everyone on a field. On said day the heavens open all day and the field car park soon turned into mush and many cars were being towed out by one modernish diesel tractor and two classic Ford tractors. The people on car park attendant duty did actually ask if I had a EV as they were rescuing more EV's than internal combustion cars, as the weight of them had caused them to sink and the motors couldn't exactly pull themselves from the mud. My little petrol hatchback escaped with no assistance at all and I thought it would get stuck due to its low profile tyres.

      The elephant in the room is you can buy a classic VW camper or bus for the same price as this restored just as long as no one has EV converted one as classic EV conversions are ridiculous prices. I saw one of the EV converted classic Mini's at £60,000 whereas a fully restored classic Mini was around the £9,000-£20,000 mark

    My 2001 230 SLK took me from Aberdeen to Manchester topless the whole way. It can get a bit wearing on the motorways but I still find it magical. Got a Volvo V50 too for the winter, my dear old Dads, (bl**dy apostrophes) it was such a good car and so almost worthless I wasn't giving it away. I had a Griff500 too a while ago, just wanted one car from the silly draw in my life, sold it and bought a Suzuki Cappuccino, officially the world's most bonkers fun car ever.

    Stupid air conditioning controls. Really annoying. And yes, nobody needs electric seats with heavy motors and wiring designed to fail, same for the tailgate. I have an electric one too and a simple manual one is easier and quicker. However, people, who are very fashion conscious don’t forget, tell themselves they need these things. Give it properly engineered heating controls and a four hundred mile range, at a sensible price with fast charging, and I might be interested. Until then it’s a toy.

    Il stick with my 23 year old disco, with the seats out you can get a board in the back or several bags of sand and cement and it will get through a foot of snow or mud.

    I had a Volvo 350DL and one of the warning lights was a skull and crossbones. Turned out to be the little sidelight bulb had blown. That gave me a fright☠️😂

    Electric seats are so you don't have to keep adjusting the car seat if the car is being driven by two people. These and an electric tailgate make very little difference to the cars range.

    the actual range of the Buzz is 205 miles without a recharge, with 4 passengers and some materials probably nearer 170, best keep a petrol generator in the back to avoid being stranded and of course embarrassed.
    The modern day Sinclair C5.

    The X bus (if it ever materialises) is half the price and I believe doesn't use cobalt in the batteries
    The obvious successor to an old split screen is an old t4 or t5

    I’ll stick with my trusty £4000 2.4L long range, (run on chip oil if I want), turbo diesel 8 seater pop top, multi-option seating & 2x double bed, charge up via cigarette lighter, multiple cup holder front and back. AC front and back heaters, full electric including roof bongo, using my £80 iphone SE as Sat Nav, entertainment and pub finder - thanks. 👍😎

    Alright, so the seat motor usually takes around 2A at 12V, or around 24W. It doesn't actually touch your high voltage battery, but if it did, it would run continuously for around 200 hours, so I think you're alright there 😂 - it's heating/cooling and moving that takes up 99.9% of the battery. With that said, these seem to lose 15% range average after a couple of years, so you're looking at around 100 miles range on the motorway in the cold, you probably want to leave 20-30 miles spare just in case to make it to a charger, so make that 70-80 miles realistically - feels like freedom!🤣 - pretty good range for slower driving though.

    Don't get hung up on electric seats as the rerely move unless you change driver - and even then it's 'nothing' in terms of battery use. To some extent the electric tailgate is the same story. Most people on most trips will not open it - and even when you do it takes bugger all power - so in terms of overall electricity use it is a rounding error.

      Ah, someone tried: th-cam.com/video/SZnwB4luUE4/w-d-xo.html -- he got 158 miles running it all the way to 0. So let's say it's 3 years old and lost 15% of range and you don't want to run it to 0% (10-90%) - yep, around 100 miles range (but again unless you love living in range anxiety land, subtract 30-40 miles from that!).

      ​​​​@@DigiDriftZone now try it in the winter, EV database says 145 miles on a motorway. Without the 15 miles left in reserve for that broken rapid charger, you now have a true cold weather range on the motorway of 130 miles to avoid being stranded.

      @@Richard482 that’s the average battery degradation in the first 3 years, after that it tapers off and the annual battery capacity loses become lower but at 8-10 years there is usually something like 20-25% less capacity than you started with.

    I have a T6, this interests me NOT, not even slightly. I’m in the ‘600 club’, the Transporter owners who have their engines re-mapped which gives you over 600 miles to a full tank.
    In my street of less than 40 houses there are 5 Transporters, I have 3 kids under 10, they’re unbeatable for prams, bikes scooters etc. Funny you mentioned the Picasso, talking to my neighbour yesterday, he had one prior to his T6, he had it for years and loved it

    ID Buzz cold weather motorway range from EV database figures is 145 miles. Now take away 15 miles for that broken rapid charger and you have a true cold weather range of 130 miles to avoid being stranded.

      It's potentially worse than that on a motorway trip because if you assume about 20 miles between services and one services is out of action, then you need to be able to get to the next one. So that's 40 miles range that I'd want to reserve.
      Then on top of that, you'd only charge it to 80% unless you want to sit around at the tail end of the charge curve for a couple of hours.
      So typically on motorway runs where several charges are required, it could be max 80 to ft 100 miles or so between charges unless you're brave or trusting in infrastructure.
      Efficiency of around 2.6 to 2.7 miles per kWh, not good.

      @@djtaylorutube The point here is though that most people who will buy these cars will already have at least another car, more likely three or four other cars. Therefore they will be used for a specific purpose such as local commutes or shuttle journeys. Most people do less than 50 miles per day which is well within the range. Most people who buy these will have a car for long distance like a Golf, E class or Audi avant too. That is why these cars will sell v well.

    So would your reconsider in the light of vw’s decision to reduce the price by 10k? I enjoyed your review but I’m not sure that comparing the buzz to a split-screen is really that relevant (albeit entertaining…must check out Mr Stoners book)…I don’t think Vw ever intended it to be a replacement . You also make an interesting comment about the fact that it doesn’t engage as much as your slk to drive; I think it’s unlikely any electric vehicle (consumer level) will the feedback you get through transmission/engine sound/engine gauge’s but I guess the point is that we need to give such sensations up in light of our environmental challenges? I agree that it does seem that that the extraction of cobalt causes exploitation of people but historically the petrochemical industry has done -and possibly continues-to do the same? Hopefully the process of lithium battery manufacture will become less damaging as time progresses. For me though, the point of the buzz weighing 2,400kg is the fact that is most disconcerting (I think the curb weight of a t5 transporter is around 1800kg with the 1.9 diesel)…it’s a hell of a lot of weight to lug around/accelerate/decelerate and in conjunction with its likely poor drag coefficient, you would have to wonder if making such a vehicle electric is a sensible proposition…. Maybe you are correct in saying that it’s a pity that it’s not available with a good 2l diesel engine 😂. Thanks for posting.

    Electric seats wouldn’t effect your EV battery. That would come off of your 12v house battery. Like in a regular car you don’t need the engine on to use electric seats.

    Simply, I cannot afford an ID Buzz. It is ridiculously expensive in Germany and therefore you get nice interior colors but also hard cheap plastics all over. No nice finishes that you could find in much cheaper cars. Leather seats? Not in this price range. Rear side windows to get a better ventilation, over estimated.     Its way too expensive to be what the ideal is, but i'm not sure about your range complaint.
    I'd definitely want a 30 min break at some point in 250 miles (maybe more than one), so it probably isn't a problem in any real world situation.
    I mean, this thing can (theoretically) go from Sheffield to Edinburgh on a single charge, but you'd never need to. I personally would like to have lunch at some point in a 5 - 6 hour drive

    Staffordshire to Falmouth is 312 miles, best time we’ve done it in is 4 3/4 hrs approximately excluding 1 comfort break say 10 mins, how much time would I have to spend charging the thing/looking for a working charger? No thanks, my awd Merc with 2*1 diesel did 47*77mpg last time fully loaded, no contest especially as we went down & back on one tank of fuel.

      3 stops of around 1.5 to 2 hours each :) - those stops will cost you 1.8x the price of diesel as motorway chargers are INSANELY expensive (excluding snacks!). It's ironic isn't it that you'll spend more time charging than you do driving in your diesel. You also don't want to go over 70mph or that could mean a 4th charging stop!

    The EV crowd and 77th Brigade blow a fuse when you ask them where and how the EV batteries are eventually recycled. They claim the newer batteries will last a very long time or can be used to store power for your home (😅). Some recycling initiatives are in place but will have very low volume, my bet is that the batteries will end up in Bangladesh Central Landfill Facility (No.2), the No.1 Facility is full of all the iPhone and IPad batteries which cannot be recycled.

    Have you ever driven a Renault Espace MK4? When you pointed out the VW ID BUZZ has an electric hand break, It reminded me about the horror and misery of the electric hand break on the Renault. You could be driving along one minute and then suddenly have the hand break randomly come on, I later heard that all electric hand brakes on all makes and models are problematic.

    5:25 Electric seats draw nothing from battery. Even heating don’t draw much range from battery. Its was problem in small battery cars but with todays big battery ones not anymore.

    We had a 2L Picasso new in 05, first new car ever brought, what a pile of 💩 it spent the first 6 months back and forth needing repair and after 5 years of putting up with crap fuel economy [ main dealer mechanic even said its a pile of poop] we brought a 2L 6 speed galaxy to pull the caravan and God I miss the caviness boot, my daily drive these days is a xc70, not as much space but bloody comfy. I can't see how any normal working family could afford an eV like that not now the mortgage goes up every other month.

    It is a pretty much an obvious WEF vehicle - designed to be out of reach of the peasants. Surprised they haven’t got them ferrying the gimps into Davos but no, they will stick to their S-Classes and Range Rovers. The Buzzz is the anti-christ of cars to me. Amazing when they don’t tell you how much carbon was released when making this ridiculous thing…. Good review though as always Geoff.

    Here’s a strange fact I saw the other day. Company cars registered fell from 920,000 to 800, 000 cars. If you calculate the turn over rate approximately 15,000 company cars are replaced every month. Now BEV sales are about 20% of these vehicles despite the massive tax subsidies.
    Another interesting fact aid market share reached about 10% in 2020 and has only increased to 15% in 2023 but the sales increase is now approximately 1% increase year on year. At this rate BEV sales will be at 22% of new car sales. It’s time for a bigger rethink as it will take 60 years to replace 50% of the uk cars on the road.
    Today whilst playing Bev v convertible golf uci was a bit worried about loosing at 18 ~16 to the BEVs on the A350 a quick sprint up the M4 ended 35~ 46 in favour of the convertibles. It’s funny how BEVs are seen in and around shopping centres but not on the open roads.

      @@FullFact548 my mate takes his family on holiday he saves £20,000 a year running a I4 instead of his M3 enough to go to Florida and run an X5 for family weekend trips because his family won’t travel in the Tesla because of the charging times. And of course the electrical generation companies receive no subsidies.

      @@FullFact548 the benefit in kind tax for a BEV is 2% for a Ltd company director its 14% for the company and 40% for the user. That’s why its £1200 for a Tesla/ I3 and nearly 5000to for a 5 series diesel and 12k for a 550i

      @@FullFact548 there’s no uk incentive to buy aBEV even with the subsidies there double the price of ICE vehicles. There’s only 900,000 BEVs registered in the uk 3% of cars . The turn over rate of company cars is 20,000 a month current BEV sales are 30k but the Tesla model Y is the only BEV in the top 10. It is estimated that March’s record sales is greatly effected by pre registration that have yet to leave the main dealers. There are 5000 main dealers with a lot of pre registered vehicles on the premises. So it’s hard to tell. One thing I can tell you is you see more convertibles on uk roads than BEVs on average 3 to1 and 80% of the teslas on the market have done extremely low mileage. There one 2015 model s for sale with 2500 miles from new.

Ice sales still strong and there’s less than 7 years to go a massive rethink is coming and the answer isn’t BEV. 200,000 cars a year isn’t fast enough for the transition. Current electric prices in the uk are 32 p a kWh so at best for most people it’s 10p a mile more if you drive at reasonable motorway speeds.
