A £71k electric Scooby-Doo VW-mobile ? Great review and lovely seeing the countryside of West Yorkshire, but I can't imagine many of us northerners parting with their hard-earned for one.
It needed a 100kWh battery. For the same price! If you load this with people and stuff I suspect the real world range would be about 160-180 miles or even worse in winter or steep routes etc. Not much fun when travelling here and there which I have good memories of doing in then original VW camper when a youngster. Has potential though. It seems fun to drive and has character which is rare in the EV world.
Yeah, come on, let's slap an even bigger, heavier battery in it, with even more raw minerals mined in terrible, destructive ways, then shipped 3 times across the world for processing generating a massive amount of CO2 just so a fat, rich person can drive around with a smug grin on their face thinking they're saving the planet. The hypocracy of it all!
@@tonyb3629 Yes EVs are heavy but that is where we are at. Nothing and I mean NOTHING is as destructive and wasteful as getting conventional fossil fuels from the Earth and in to your car. Not even close. Yet this has been going on for a century now. It is the past. End of. EV batteries are already getting rid of the harmful cobalt etc in only 10 good years of them being produced. Every box ticked and then came the price! Great review as always. As I needed space / practicality and was lacking the ability to spend £70k I recently opted for a Peugeot eRifter, which does a lot of the same things (admittedly not the ‘being cool’ bits) and a few things better (eg ventilation in the back) but costs about half the amount.
@@danielstefanovic2604 I’ve averaged 3 miles per kWh over the first 1000 miles so about 210km total range (135 miles or there about) in winter so actually not too bad
We want one too! Yes, too expensive but so cool. The two tone paint is essential, just because it’s impossible not to smile when you see it. We have a T6 California and went for two tone. We wouldn’t enjoy it as much if we hadn’t 😂. A great review, thanks.
Hopefully they put a bigger battery in the California, I can't really imagine it being good for a road trip with such low range but push that up to 250 in winter, 300 in summer, and it would make an ideal base for a decent road trid - ludicrously expensive though. I can imagine it being popular to hire one though.
A bigger battery version is on the way but that's going to the USA first (VW not confirmed it going to sell it in the EU) and the USA will not be getting this European version - the USA from the start will be getting the bigger seven-seater size and extra high roof versions and the California/camper versions - hence why they getting there version 1 to 2 years later than the EU.
No ventilation is terrible. Anyone who has spent time riding in the back of a van in the summer knows its essential. And with 7 seats? Who the hell is going to want to ride in the oven at the back??? This just proves that this is really the commercial Transporter half-ass converted into a "family" car. So its really STILL not a true minivan despite the VW fans assuring us it is. And really the only thing even remotely similar to the classic minibus is the paint job, which Ive heard is hard to spec.
I want one too! Mind you that’s so I can sell it at a Premium to someone I saw coming. It will sell out as VW will only make a small volume to keep the desirability up but as a real-life car it’s outrageously priced with tiny range, bad efficiency and VW infotainment (need I say more). None of it matters though as it’s ‘cool’ but really it’s taking the P at this price.
Probably do well with the down from London 2nd home brigade but beyond most peoples pockets, on the plus side it could influence other manufacturers like BYD to come up with a more affordable alternative, good review as always chaps.
Lol, the title of this video was my exact reaction! Ended up ordering a Fisker. Much better value. I was a VW guy for a long time, maybe now I’ll be a Fisker guy.
It honestly reminds me of all the VW Microbuses of the '60's and '70's that the hippies drove. But those vans were all fairly cheap to buy and own. This new one, though, is massively expensive and undersized compared to them. By the time the seven seat version comes out you'd have to be really rich to even buy the base seven seat model, let alone with any expensive add-ons. I have no idea who they are aiming this vehicle at, maybe filthy rich nostalgic old hippies wanting to relive their youth in a modern Microbus. But a young couple with three or four kids? Not a chance, they have lots of other priorities to spend their money on.
There will be a thousand variations of this 'van' as VW try to cash in, but as with most EV's these days, the price will restrict ownership to the well off and those who don't mind paying >£1000pm on a lease deal. Let's be honest, when you're paying that much money, you don't worry about much. It really does seem like the wheels are starting to come of the EV revolution, as now the EU have relented, it looks likely we'll still see combustion cars on the roads for decades to come.
It's a van though, so you have to think about the range with it being loaded with stuff or people. It should have had a slightly larger battery for trips
Residual price is important here, I think I'd have one if I was guaranteed to not lose too much money over say 3 years. I'd love a proper camper version with a much bigger battery.
@@GaiaTheorist82 Yep, the old campers are going up in value, trouble with an electric one is of course the battery which will not last 50 years and will cost a lot each time it needs replacing, but once the magical battery that is always just around the corner arrives can be swapped in that might well still be a good investment.
Don't mix up cool with novel, it's not cool, it's VW living off something that was cool 50 years ago. At £71k there is no way this will ever be sold in serious volumes and unless they get this below £55k you'll rarely see them outside a showroom.
Fifty-eight t h o u s a n d pounds? As Bjorn would say, "shieeeeet!". The 2.6 mi/kWh is about the same as Ioniq 5 on a bad day, so that could be better too, though this is a van. I agree with others: this needs a 100 kWh for that much moolah.
I agree, it finally looks like a VW EV where the interior wasn't the least they could get away with. But the range bothers me, since this is a vehicle designed for long trips to places without many chargers.
I've wanted one ever since I saw the prototype. I've got a thing for minivans (I'd kinda like a Honda Stepwgn), but even so, this thing is seriously cool. I was going past a VW dealer las week and saw it in the window and stopped so I could look at it. Shame I will never be able to afford one! :)
These things are only stupidly expensive because no one actually pays their own hard earned real money for them. They will either be bought with other peoples money or be mostly leased and the assumption that they will have high residuals should keep the monthly lease down to the average company car drivers budget. So it’s more a case of what will it cost in 2-3 years once the ex lease vehicles hit the secondhand market.
It's a bit smaller thany T6, so not enough room for my motorcycle. It's good that some items you put in the door storage are hidden. I dislike the grill at the front. Dark colours hide it, but I want a yellow Buzz.
I'm waiting to order a Cargo but reluctant to put an order in just incase they bring a dual motor version out as it won't be quick with 400kg loaded into it. Price isn't an issue, it's about the same as a T6.1 panel can spec to spec and residual value.
Depreciation will be the killer. They have maxed out the price people are willing to pay for this, and then some. Sure it won't matter as supply will be 5000 to the UK so they can sell all of them for any price... But... When a better version with a longer range, maybe a nicer interior as seen on the id2 reveal, comes along it is going to be the same price as the current model. This ID Buzz with a a 110kwh battery pack would make an amazing car... People who bought the 1st version will lap it up... But no one will be paying £70k for their 2 year old Buzz with a sub 200 mile range and no opening rear windows or rear vents etc. The £58k version of the ID Buzz does not even come with the 12 inch screen. That is an optional upgrade at £1560. It will almost certainly be free on next year's model, and in 2 years probably replaced by a 15 inch screen. 2 tone paint at £2790 is crazy. They have said 2 tone will be free in the USA, so once this launches in the USA it may become free or at least cheaper here. When these options and others are included in the price of the next version of the ID buzz (and they will have to be to get more people to purchase) along with air con for rear seats etc, then you will be selling your 2 year old £70k+ ID buzz for £40k to fund the newer longer range version.
I doubt you'll have to worry about depreciation. Electric cars keep their value v well esp desirable ones like VW. Cars that will depreciate will be diesels and to a lesser extent petrol.
@@Blackmamba12345 a £70k VW is likely to hold its value? Well it may do until an updated version comes out with better range. As someone who already drives an EV I believe the range needs to be above 200miles at 70mph (especially for cars over £40k), this is 180 in the summer and 135 in the winter. This is for a £70k VW! This is in a country with a terrible rapid charging network and a tiny ultra rapid charging network. This is not a Porsche or a Mercedes, it is a VW at £70k. EVs do hold there value quite well but they still depreciate. Take the id4, there is a 2021 model on Auto trader for £25.5k. So even though these cars 6 months ago were selling second hand for more than the new price there is now one listed that has lost over £10k in the last 6 months!
Vw are trying to claw back that massive fine they got. £71k umm, no way its going to get the sales they think it is. Great review guys as always. But lots I liked and for money I'd expect more. They are all new to evs, so parts have to bought in. No thanks I'd rather buy a proper big camper.
You do know almost every single car manufacturer got a fine for falsifying emissions on diesel vehicles. Just Google it, It's just unfortunate for Volkswagen that they were the first ones to get caught giving them the big headlines.
Don't think you can forgive van quality when asking for that much money for base and the fact they didn't fix the dangerous lack of lighting on the key features shows they don't give 2 hoots about their customers and just want to milk you for the cash, the ID3 was 2020. If Hyundai did an electric staria in the UK I would be much happier, plus it'd go 50miles more
Eh. The only thing minibus about this thing is the two tone paint. Which I had heard elsewhere is difficult to spec. No ventilation in the back means its DOA as a people carrier... folks wagon... Why even bother to offer 7 seats if theres no way to crack a window? Itll be an oven in the summer, and summer range wont be any better than winter because youll have to have the AC set to 10 degrees at full blast in the front.
Max. 1000kg trailer weight is also a bit weak for a car like this... and with all the cargo volume - you can only stuff about 500kg in before you hit the allowed total weight limit. I like the looks, despite never having been a VW fan, but after an ID.3 rental I'm not a fan of the infotainment, capacitive buttons etc. (though some of it will be a matter of just getting used to them). Edit: Unless they beef up the max. total weight a bit, that is going to be a real issue for a 7-seat version...
Is this a car that you fall in love with. I watch the review and think 30k interior tops, way over priced but then I haven't tried one in the real world and yes it's cool. It's at least 10k over priced though. But you would think if it's going to hold its value, then there should be good deals on monthly payments on one. Doesn't seem to be the case yet though
Has it just got that feel good factor? This things one numerous awards including a what car car of the year. Objectively it seems crap on paper for the price. It's got parts in that interior that reminds me of a mark 3 polo I had. But sometimes what you read on paper isn't everything. And if you get that instead of a posh German SUV you'll stand out from the crowd. Plus that boot makes it great for families.
I absolutely want one, at least similar to this, but my god, how can they miss the mark on so many things. My first foray into the van type world is my Nissan Elgrand. It's an incredible vehicle in that it is so versatile, 7 seats, luxury leather interior, great sound system, OK handling for a van, good performance with 240bhp, and so easy to use as a camper. All this for less than 10k! Then there's the fuel economy, which is simply awful, 15mpg around town and 25 on a run. We have a small EV but switching the van over to an EV too would be great, but the price and lack of real functionality with the seating / 7 seats is pretty poor with this ID Buzz. I do hope they get a little better with the seating options but the price is still insane for what you get, I means that's 40 or 50k more than my current one, would take about 20 - 30 years to cover the difference in fuel costs! May consider salary sacrifice lease when prices come down a bit. For a family though, vans are so much more useful than cars, no wasted space with long bonnets, functional space, easy to get into etc. Shame these vans / MPVs fell out of favour!
You said there are no vents in the back, that heater is going to have its work cut out warming such a vast volume in the rear or it will be pretty chilly in there for a long time while the whole space warms up and the driver is the only person in it on a frosty winters morning - reducing range even further
The future UK taxi. Also fantastic for cool road trips. The camping version will be awesome. Should've got a sunroof too. It should charge at a super fast rate for the mental price. Give it time, the Chinese will copy it.
Without doubt it needs a bigger battery. No way would the range be practical when full of people. Hate VW where everything is an extra. The Web site takes about 15 minutes just to say NO to all of the options. Don't like passenger windows that don't open.
Just cancelled my order. I really wanted one but with the dual motor model Y available for £15k less I couldn’t justify it any more. EV Prices are falling with the exception of VW so I definitely think it will lose value quickly.
Cars used to make is poorer over time but now they can do it upfront! The buzz is certainly appealing as a cool looking family bus but price makes it a niche vehicle surely
I really wish Volkswagen would change their infotainment systems to something that had a volume knob and some actual switches. The haptic buttons on the steering wheel need to go too. They created that system and then unfortunately decided to put it in everything. ID Buzz is in a category of it's own so I'm pretty sure most people will forgive it it's faults. I think they nailed the looks of the car, but I'd have to have a two tone version.
Would prob shortlist it as the next car…..until price was introduced. Ridiculous and as soon as some competition in this sector comes then I can’t see it being successful. Hopefully price is reconsidered by VW.
For me the range it’s a flying brick and has the efficiency of one , they should offer a larger pack than the default 77kwh and infotainment are still the issue, still buggy as hell, also for a trade Vehicle rear door ready should be split and open horizontally, not vertically, and why no sunroof option puzzles me it’s a two window the kids will be complain about lack of air within 50 miles this really should have been caught before launch
Problem with it is the T7 Multivan, based off the Golf rather than the actual Transporter and sold as a hybrid. VW basicly made two different cars of the same size serving the same market at the same time and one is funky and cool but the other had all the good interior guys working on it. Seriously, watch a review or two of the T7 multivan and ask yourself "why are the interiors of these vehicles so different?" and then ask "why is the ID Buzz halo car the one that looks bad in the comparison".
Because imo the Buzz is trying too hard, new retro models are pretty naff. The T7 has a better interior but it isn't a bev plus although its less than the Buzz its still very expensive. I'm looking forward to the new bev Transit/Transporter colab thats out this year.
@@marks-0-0 there is however no excuse for the Buzz not to have the same features as the T7s super flexible interior even if the materials are different
Nice review, one comment though.....what happens if you are charging and someone opens the rear offside door, will you have a broken charging door and cable? Keep up the good content.
Other videos show that the sliding door stops short of the charging flap! Lovely car, I test drove one, but my wife said it was too big for our needs. Shame really; I wish they would make one about the size of a VW Touran.
Good review as alway guys. VW got this really wrong. Not saying they shouldn't have done the Buzz, but surely they would have been better served developing the ID2 to get it to the mass market before 2025 ahead of the totally overpriced limited market Buzz. Also, by 2025 there will be a whole bunch of other 5 door small hatch EV's available (Renault 5, Fiat Super Mini / Panda & others) so the potential market for the ID2 will be evaporating the longer it takes them to launch it. This & the VW infotainment / haptic switch debacle does make you wonder what planet some of these VW designers are on & who signs off on this flawed stuff. I'm in the market for a small 5 door Hatch / Crossover EV for £20k or less. It won't be a VW group car so probably a 2 year old Stellantis model or something similar.
Its simple. Profit margin on this one is quite high, and the commercial variants sell like crazy as big fleet customers were really waiting for it. Profit margins on the ID.2 will be very small indeed, so it took a backseat in the development pipeline. If you have to finance a 150 billion spending on the transition to BEVs, every little bit counts.
@@Soordhin Well I guess they have to recoup some money after settling all the Dieselgate claims! The Buzz needs a bigger battery to offset the extra weight of family & clobber when used for long trips which will kill the range. As it is, it's a bit of a fashion victims car IMO & an overpriced one at that (as are all EV's).
Perfect for the OH and grandkid ferrying duties but that price is insane, you can get an EV6 GT for less It will be 100k for the long body, 100kw 7 seater …
It will be good when they have built enough EV factories to be able to spin them out at scale to lower the price probably be great in 5 years especially since battery tech will have also improved.
If this was perfect you’d forgive the price to some extent - but the poor controls and no ventilation in the rear? Good luck taking the Fam on a summer road trip!
You could nip over to Turin and stick $4million in gold on that back shelf. Or, more likely, you could put your Microlino in it. Which is cooler and cheaper.
The Buzz will find itself competing with e Kia EV9. If the shape proves popular then one might imagine the Chinese following suit, notably MG whose MG4 skateboard might well be easily adaptable.
I imagine the ev9 will be a similar price... But it will have wind down windows, heaters and vents for the rear seats, 7 seats instead of 5 seats and reportedly a much larger usable range.
A bit steep on the price, but that's Volkswagen. Premium price for a non-premium car. One could of course argue that this particular one is premium, but what about the other models? They are all 10 years behind the non-Chinese, far east models, but cost at least 25% more. How come? Where is the logic? It would make sense if I could drive it for the next 20 years without having to make overhaul investments, but I doubt very much that this could be the case.
Far too expensive car prices are insane, time for manufacturers to smell the roses. It’s a great looking vehicle but smelling salts should be standard.
Buttons are better for driver efficiency. And not prone to not responding, being moved or resized just cause some idiot designer thinks it looks cool. Buttons just work. Soft bottons don't always.

There is likely to be steady demand for the Buzz, so depreciation isn't likely to be heavy.
Is there a VW branded torch… so the driver can see the controls at night?
ID BUZZ 😳 couldn't they think of a better name
Given how well it will hold its value there should be good lease/PCP deals on this?
Watching this I suddenly realised that the Buzz reminds me or the Renault Espace, somewhere between the original Espace and the Mk2.
People are saying that VW id4’s electric controls are rubbish and VW aren’t going to fix them. Is it the same with this VW?
Vw are trying to claw back that massive fine they got. £71k umm, no way its going to get the sales they think it is. Great review guys as always. But lots I liked and for money I'd expect more. They are all new to evs, so parts have to bought in. No thanks I'd rather buy a proper big camper.
They were technically fined but they didn’t have to pay a single dollar.
If Hyundai did an electric staria in the UK I would be much happier, plus it'd go 50miles more
It really needs to be 1/2 the current price
Does it also go straight into the uk's higher road tax bracket? 💷
Hi EV man, how tall are you? Just to have an idea how big the buzz is.
It was pretty good tbh.
Just load up the back with a couple of old bean bags when you've no passengers or cargo, problem solved.
The future UK taxi. Also fantastic for cool road trips. The camping version will be awesome. Should've got a sunroof too. It should charge at a super fast rate for the mental price. Give it time, the Chinese will copy it.
Can it tow? If so, how much?
Saw one of these the other day in a light blue colour. Looks spectacular but I did wonder, how much?
VW do like to overcharge and then it's an EV.
At that price.....Never Mind the Buzzbox :)
I’ve just seen it’s got a chin on the ass end too. What’s that about? I wasn’t expecting the ass end chin.
Would also love one but not at that cost although VW vans have always been expensive!
Shouldn't need an ice scraper if you can preheat from your mobile!
Great concept but the price. Good God. That's like $118,000 Canadian.
Updated with a new gen motor with 282 hp will be better. It's to expensive and just for show in my opinion but i like it.
Thanks for your reply, it looked deceiving on the video 😊
VW XL1 was over £100k and it was only a two seater.
13:22 😀 magic 😆
Perfect for the OH and grandkid ferrying duties but that price is insane, you can get an EV6 GT for less
It will be 100k for the long body, 100kw 7 seater …
The Kia EV6 and the Buzz are aimed at completely different user markets.
Charging speed?
On screen when you see the port.
As long as it's banned from Tesla Superchargers with the port on that side! :)
Anyone who has access to the NHS lease scheme my wife was quoted £385 net monthly for one of these (6k miles).
You could nip over to Turin and stick $4million in gold on that back shelf.
Or, more likely, you could put your Microlino in it. Which is cooler and cheaper.
Looks good, but I doubt I could afford it at that price.
The VW1L was more than £100k. But limited edition, granted.
£70k+? Mug territory. And you can’t even find the heater controls at night or have fresh air in the second row.
01:05 “ … and yes, I have a Tesla.” You forgot to add: “With panel gaps”!
Think I would save a fortune by getting a VW Kombi type 2 converted for 20 grand
I like it, but expensive. It might be because it's the initial release, hopefully it will be less expensive in the future.
Hahahaha, good joke, appreciate your humour.
Great vehicle, but they priced it way out of the everyday users price range. Real pity.
The Canoo is the vehicle that most is like the VW Bus
Great review - nice to see VW finally getting it right
Did you comment before watching?
I bet a camper (California) version will be over £100,000.
Buttons are better for driver efficiency. And not prone to not responding, being moved or resized just cause some idiot designer thinks it looks cool. Buttons just work. Soft bottons don't always.
I thought we got the van for 99p I had my name down then you went and spoilt it
Wow, far to costly for what it is.
Any chance the presenter could stand closer to the camera ?
It’s the car you’re looking at, not me.
@@ElectricVehicleMan Not for the opening piece to camera. Then you'd be able to cut to a nice 3/4 of the car without you in it - once we've got the measure of you in a mid or MCU you then let us see the car you're talking about in a master 3/4 wide with at least mids, possibly saving the close ups for your walk around. Top tip : the cutaways of the cars exterior details will be easier to cut in of you don't touch the car in the master walk around, other wise you'll have to match hand continuity. We need to connect with you as a presenter then get out of the way and tell us about the car. Some drive bys on the test drive would be ace too.
What it can not do toe my caravan 1100 kg
Power my house
More than 200 miles
Charge fast
My ionic 5 coming Tuesday can camp in back charge way faster is just over 1 yr old
I will camp in it tow with it use a 66kwh power watt all for 36500 think that’s cool
That reminds me can put a fridge in the back
The first VW I like. I heard the price I will stop the video. Sorry guys.
Much better car than any crappy Porsche
Simply put VW is cheaping out and then price gouging because they can. They will end up losing reputation, customers and market share.
Ridiculous price and atrocious range!
Over priced and poor range in winter when fully loaded, look super cool in real life
If money was no object ...
