Vans are just so handy and this is a real looker on the outside. VW seemed to have skimped a bit upfront though. For 50k the driver really should be comfortable and good armrests a must.
I'd love to see Kryton do a video on you and your business. The Fully Charged Show really should be highlighting and promoting people like as the way of the future at the leading edge, showing what is possible today, not only with used EV sales, but with your use of solar PV with batteries for renewable independent energy. Keep up the good work.
VW should have an optional solar panel and inverter pack designed for install into the roof. The design should be aero dynamic. With such large real estate you should be able to add 2-5kwh of charging on a sunny day. It should pay for itself in fuel savings over several yrs.
@RSymons RSEV I agree with you that the adaptive cruise control works extremely well. However, if you’ve got the automatic speed limit detection active, it can be quite a pain. I drive an ID3 in France at the system gets massively confused with speed limit signs here. On many occasions it decides the speed limit should be 130km/h in one of the La Défense area tunnels and actually starts accelerating hard when the actual speed limit is 70 km/h. Other times it brakes hard when it suddenly thinks that the speed limit should be 50km/h on a 100km/h motorway. All in all, its a good system, but the speed limit recognition software needs to be improved.
Got literally this spec on order due for delivery aug/sep. I asked for a arm rest but it’s only available in the 2 seater version. I’ll have to do a bit of research to see how that guy fitted that one ☝️
I’ve done over 7K in mine, it’s the best van out. Costs me on average £10 to charge up at home and currently getting 240+ miles. Not for builders though😂
I looked at getting the ID Buzz last November. At that time the dealer was telling me it would be 12 to 18 months waiting list...!! So I cancelled and went to Ford. However the E-Transit struggles to do 120 miles in the real world...!! Clearly the ID Buzz has much better range... Just a shame that VW are deliberately throttling the BEVs to less than 10% of their ICE output.
Test drove one yesterday. An easy drive but not as easy as a transporter to park. Additionally the loading capacity is tiny for the overall length. Nice van but not worth the compromise in space.
Nice video - Cancel..! Cancel..! Warts and all..! 😋Funnily enough, I did that as well, in my ID3, and it was my first day of ownership, trying to reach the front of the windscreen. I was wearing a cricket type cap at the time. 2 things - 1, why does a previous owner give up on a brand new van after 5000 miles, after obviously committing to it [extra bits fitted]? And 2, there's an awful lot of vehicle that isn't load carrying space. About 50/50 split [just look at the side view in the video]. That really doesn't cut it commercially. For comparison, an E-Transit is more like a [front to rear] 30/70 split. And the Transit is way bigger at a similar price [spec depending]. Yes, I know the Transit [and others] is a much more "serious" van. But running costs is what it's all about, isn't it? That said, the ID Buzz is about a cute as a van can get, so I'm sure it'll get sales in boutique markets. Perhaps we need the long wheelbase version in the UK.
The biggest issue with the Buzz is it's a replacement for the Caddy, not the Transporter. Which is about right when it's carrying half the load in weight and only 2 thirds in volume. Buzz/ Transporter 6.1; Load weight 600kg/1200kg. Load Volume 4 cubic meters/ 6 cubic meters. 200 mile range/ 500 mile range.
I wonder if SAIC is going to start upping its game with its Maxus range - bring some MG styling to them and undercut VW. If they have sense they would.
Hi Great review from the id buzz. I’m waiting for my new id buzz cargo in a couple of months. I asked the seller if I could order it with a armrest. But they don’t have!!! And now i saw that you mounted it yourself. Could you make a video on how to do it, and where you bought the armrest?
the only cargo van on the market where the interior feels like it's from the 21st century - people still have to live in these vans, don't know why manufacturers insist on the most plain boring barebones cheap interior
Vans definitely tend to have really awful comforts for driver & passenger. You're lucky if you get a touchscreen or anything fancy. And even if it does it'll look like stuff out of the parts bin.
Another brilliant everyman video! Richard, could you be the next Harry Metcalfe or Quentin Wilson? But please, whatever you do, don't become the next Mike Brewer!
Great van! However, I do think VW have missed a trick not making it or at least giving it a 4x4 option. Would then be a fantastic recovery vehicle! Sure people like the RAC and AA would be a huge potential market for VW. Even police forces would definitely be attacked to that opinion
Saw the van in the wild and not a fan of the rear and in particular the rear lights when we were following it. Felt like they’d run out of time designing the back.
As a people carrier, yes. However, I don't see its application as a commercial vehicle. The loadspace is too small for most trades (I know there's a long wheel base coming), the price is too expensive, and the range is too small, considering it is a van and should be loaded up.
Yeah, EV vans are great for light-load, low-ish mileage applications at the moment, but these are really Gen-01 as practical vans. This will only ever get better & better. If you generate your own power from the roof, well that offsets the increased purchase price, plus, almost zero servicing, maintenance, & replacement parts costs, not to mention almost zero down-time and massive longevity? Goodbye replacement clutches, brakes, oil changes etc. However, our work-gang vans usually carry 90% full capacity loads, and often haul trailers with mini-diggers for jobs with a 200 mile return day-trip, so EV is not going to do it. But our light vans & passenger vehicles are now, maybe, 80% EV?
Can the Buzz fit 4ft X 8ft sheets of plywood in the back door and close it? I grew up in VW vans. My dad had 3 microbuses, not the Vanagon. Two fullwidth benchbseats in back. Could seat 8 kids plus mom & dad in front. Left a LOT of square space behind back seat. **** full 4ft X 8ft sheets of plywood would fit easily in back hatch door on top seat backs (with towels to protect) and close the hatch door.
A great van we won’t be getting in the U. S. We only get the long passenger version. There are no small cargo vans left to buy here and I don’t understand it.
Love your work but tell the camera operator that they don't need to constantly shift ALL THE TIME because it gets old really quickly and is really annoying. The odd shift here and there is good enough, thanks!
23 pounds will translate closer to 30 pounds in real world because a 77kwh battery will not consume only 77kwh from the mains to charge, but closer to 90kwh due to conversion/charging loss. So 30 pounds for 200 miles, 60 pounds for 400 miles, at home(best charging rate). How is this compared with a ICE van that can travel 400+ miles on one full tank?
I drove the passenger/ normal version earlier this week. I was determined to buy one beforehand. I’m glad a I drove it first. It was terrible. Really really terrible. I was gutted.
According to EV database, the winter range on a motorway is 145 miles, now take off 15 miles to cope with unreliable and not working rapid chargers and you are down to 130 miles unloaded. This is why nobody wants electric vehicles and why people who already have them are finding that their investment is reducing at a vastly greater rate than if they had bought ice.
