I can't explain how much the dark wood table makes these videos. It creates a warmth and rootedness that some modern glossy white table wouldn't. Even if it's completely unintentional, it makes it all feel so much more inviting and "comfy" that so many other creators almost seem to actively reject. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this.
lol He’s not kidding about forgetting a really good idea especially if it was spontaneous. I’ve lost a handful because I thought for sure I would remember later so Write it down is right!!!
I’ve recently fallen into a months long slump with art, but putting your videos in the background while I draw has been so helpful and refreshing. Especially being someone with ADHD who struggles to maintain motivation. I look forward to all your videos 👍
Even though I was drawing landscapes along with the video, the advice still made a lot of sense. I joined the Discord to see if I could level up my creature drawing skills as I think it's amazing what people can come up with. Thinking about the sketches as stories, places, characters and things with essence and history is really helping in immersing myself in art. Thank you for making videos! They're really inspiring.
Your videos are literally saving my life. The fact that I can't build it all overnight allows for distractions and discouragement to creep in. Days go by without me being able to stick to one piece and "finish" it, but letting go of that need in order to sketch out the ideas is helping me actually outline things and get a roadmap for where I want to be by this time next year! I have never been more grateful to stumble upon a random youtube channel. Thank you so much!
thanks so much for posting videos on how to help, ive been struggling badly with art block because of AI image generations , it felt like i wasn't needed in drawing but then i realized i have ideas and concepts and stories, and you're helping me with that, so thank you
Every second i spend on your channel is something i learn! Im a Spanish guy watching you from Manchester!i definitely will recommend your channel in uk and spain❤
As an author primarily, this is still good advice. Many times I sketch out scenes and such just to get a feel for environs. Somewhere I have/or had sketches of my main characters, too.
These kind of videos are super helpful! I lack the fundamentals but, I do enjoy drawing a lot. Some of your tips are things that I tend to do naturally but, all of them are a great reminder of things I keep forgetting. Im really interested in drawing the world and this is, again, super useful. Thanks!
On the note of world building takes time, I am currently reading the history of middle earth book series and it really puts into perspective how many iterations of not only the lord of the rings but also the stories making up the silmarillion there were before the final publications. Tolkien literally spent decades fleshing out the mythology of middle earth ! Also, great video, your process of creating art is really inspiring and your thoughts are much appreciated!
Just wanted to say: I love watching these, they are relaxing AND I learn stuff haha. There were some things that struck a cord and I wanted to expand with some thoughts that may or may not be insightful for character dev: 1) We recently made a cinematic and are now turning it into a comic book and one thing that I noticed is that characters in film (unless it is animated or super stylized like Sin City) are actually kinda nuanced compared to many of my favorite comic book characters. If you are making a comic book and thinking about adaptation it might be worth thinking about the actual function of the costume and the objects and figuring out how you want to strike the balance between iconic shapes and realism. I don't have any answers right now but wanted to put it out there as something I discovered whilst making stuff. 2) On the "characters should be relatable" - of course whole books have been written but maybe some small ideas for your consideration: What injustice has beset your character? Which goal is he/she struggling towards but can not yet obtain? What does he need to become a more full (human-)being but doesn't know it yet? What stands in the way of this character expressing appreciation for the people in his life? How does your character seek to find meaning and how does fate challenge him in that? One or more of such kind of questions can be asked to find something that feels right to you, that you can relate to. And that is the most important part: That you relate! Build it and it will feel close and personal. As long as it has its own internal emotional logic it will be touching - that does not go for plot/exposition tho - there you have to be clear. But that's something else. 3) If you want to explore map making more there is a really cool discord I found a couple months ago - it is linked on the channel WASD20. Great for asking questions and finding resources. Also some other map hacks: If you add ice, add fire. If you want realism, make a big map but focus your story on just a portion of it and make sure that the big map has influences on the small map. If you like magic, make it affect the map in subtle or less subtle ways - don't just leave it to the character. Bonus points for having the same magic inherent in both the map and the character as it ties things together. Also: If you look up on Pinterest "things to include in your fantasy map" and get served a list of inspiring Points of Interest. Pinterest can also be used to look up "map" and then let the algorithm suggest you a bunch of other maps and you can click your way through and gather inspiration. Hope it helped? Awesome video Bobby! Thanks for making it!
This reminded me of world building in D&D. Especially when you did the island map, character attributes, etc. What are your thoughts on doing specifics on anatomy, like arms, the tilt of the human body, legs, feet, hands, of all different sorts. All the while going back over of shading, line strength, depth, form? This was a great video! 🦶🤘
Truly can't thank you enough for all the lessons, you are awesome!!! I'm currently on Day 6 of the 20 creatures a day challenge but I feel like they all look similar or have similar features and silhouettes, what would you recommend to get more variety?
I know what you mean about the feeling of filling up a page. I also know the feeling of starting a new page and going like FUUUUUUUUU 😂 btw I'm pretty good at world building but less about story telling. I'm not able to write anything long and complex. I consider myself as an add-on to a browser or software. I mean if there is already an established story but you need to solve a certain story building problem I can help you with that. Like if a story was a map I would be able to build the cities but not the roads that connect them all together if that makes sense.
I feel like the "why" should be replaced with "what" and the "why" should tell us about his character or the story behind why he's a hunter. A back story if you will. Who? Him What? He does, how he does it When? Time period, he lives Where? In the world Why? He does it.
What is your approch to worldbuilding. You start writing dawn some lore or you create the enviroment and than start populating it with creture? Will be cool seen your strategy to manage a big project like building a world.
It's been proven in almost every impactful story that the protagonist is almost always the same. Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, Frodo Baggins, King Arthur, Peter Pan, Aladin, Neo, Bruce Wayne, Clark Kent, Peter Parker, etc. They're all orphans (or dont have parents) and have some kind of desire to get out of their current situation. I know that a huge majority of people who idolize or fall in love with these characters have both parents and are content with their lives. I think it's less about making your characters relateable and more about making them something people would like to be.
Great topic. Don't make a drawing. Build a drawing process. ...my paraphrasing Loved Super Natural as well, but where do you go after knocking off God? ... Maybe the creature who existed before God took over come back?
What's the endgame here? Just for the author knowledge? Do publishers suddenly like author illustrated books with full color illustrations? I'd love to. Last time I did it cost me $10k. The book had a run of a hundred. Come on. Be honest. Is this just for graphic novels?

Agreed 👍
You should definitely do a whole series with this character!!!
I'm leaning toward that.
lol He’s not kidding about forgetting a really good idea especially if it was spontaneous. I’ve lost a handful because I thought for sure I would remember later so Write it down is right!!!
"You gotta be a little grandiose with this stuff."
Definitely. Think big!
Was gonna say - especially if you make a graphic novel - you don't know it yet but you are doing the job of an army of concept artists!

This is my favorite video! It gave so much inspiration for making my own story and character.
Thanks! I feel there's a lot more world building videos coming. I can't cram all of it into just one.

Perfect for the worldbuilding project i started!
I’m struggling with character design and I really do try and stick to the fundamentals to get better thanks for talking about this topic 🙏💯
Happy to help!
So much detail in 1 page! Both concept art and story wise!
Wow! I love supernatural too! 👌

Thanks for the info!
My pleasure

👏😍
Bro can you make a video on how Echiro Oda's characters in one piece are built?
I feel like the "why" should be replaced with "what" and the "why" should tell us about his character or the story behind why he's a hunter. A back story if you will.
Who? Him
What? He does, how he does it
When? Time period, he lives
Where? In the world
Why? He does it.
That right there shows that you would be a good storyteller.
Can you recommend any book for me to learn creature design?😊😊
Definitely Terryl Whitlach's Science of Creature Design.
@@bobbyrebholz2183 Thank you!!👍👍
noice
What is your approch to worldbuilding. You start writing dawn some lore or you create the enviroment and than start populating it with creture? Will be cool seen your strategy to manage a big project like building a world.
I definitely write the ideas down first. No drawing yet.
I start with drawing the face first too I really need to get better at drawing hands 🖐️ that part is frustrating to me 😤😒😐

Maybe he hunts invasive species that disrupt the balance of the forest.

The end game is starting a world building project. Whatever that entails is up to you.
