The second process is terribly slow, but after a year I have a binder with over 24 drawings in it, and I don't dislike any of them or doubt I did a good job. Not all of them are finished, they don't need to be, because they each have a personality, a story within the larger story I've made. Right now I'm rediscovering the process of drawing randomly. For too long I tried to be too logical and precise while drawing and I was never satisfied! Really liked what you said here
been following a few of your lessons for the past couple of weeks and i just wanted to say how much more I've improved because of your studies, more specifically the fabric and skull anatomy videos were substantial to my own growth. the way you're able to explain things and break them down for beginners like myself really attests to the level of teaching quality you provide!
while watching this video i was doing the map of my game, then bobby said "you have no idea of what you're drawing and then you end up liking it" and i looked at the map and realized that it was actually geographically correct and that it could tirn into a supercontinent that makes sense! i'm actually shocked that all the continents of the map match perfectly without even thinking about it
For a long time I have been gearing myself up to venture a single developer video game side hustle along with my 9 - 5 job, I love to draw but a lot of my style is very abstract, I had no idea how I would ideate the look and feel of the characters, in a cohesive and practical way to digitally model, I was only rough working with rough ideas in my head to begin with. This process you explain is exactly what I needed to figure out the look and feel of the art style I will later digitally implement. I have many many years to go on this ourney I have barely began, but this right here is how I choose to start. Thank you.
Great video as always! Unironically, I've started to incorporate more thumbnail sketches in my design process after watching your video "500 Creature Thumbnail Challenge" last year. 👀 I did 150 thumbnails with a ballpoint pen. Some ideas turned out pretty decent, I have to say. But others, not at all haha The thing is that now I have 150 character prototypes that I can use for my personal project, "Zeitgeist: O Espírito do Tempo", which is the book that I'm currently working on. About "how to add more dynamism to a thumbnail sketch", I think that what may help is to practice using references first, especially photographs (figure drawing). Paying attention to how the major masses of the human body relate to each other in a figuring drawing can help you to boost your sense of volume, balance and gesture in your designs. Also, when sketching a character I think if you put them holding a sword, scythe, hammer etc, or casting some sort of spell it can add a lot to the storytelling and improve the stiffness of the design/pose. And of course as you said, in the thumbnail stage I think that the silhouette is the most important aspect that we should keep in mind. Keep up the great work Bobby! Cheers! 🔥🤘
After almost 20 years I am planning on getting back into my natural ability; Drawing (Mostly a Penciler). It's back to the basic's for me. I was drawing well into my 20's, between some emotional issues and trying to discover who I am, I had quit at about 23 years of age. Now that I find out who I am and what I can do with my natural ability I want to try to do my own Comic Book. Going to be a short amount of time before I can afford a sketch book again, but ill be watching video's like these while I am re-learning everything I used know. Prehaps along the way I'll get even better. One of the negatives I always heard was that you couldn't be an artist for an industry if you keep your hand on the paper while drawing, Now that I am viewing many artist's I find that they themselves draw the way I do. . I think it's time to get rid of the negative things I've heard that stopped me from continuing my practice.

Hello! I've been watching your channel for a couple weeks now I think. Even joined the discord, which I am still reading through. But for now I must say this: I have been drawing my entire life, and I've consumed so many tutorials, and had many art classes, but I have never had anyone say some of the things I have heard you say during your drawing sessions. Like in this one, it was about just making the line work even when you put it in the wrong place. I feel like your videos are full of nuggets of advice like this that I needed to hear when I was younger. I've always wanted to be a professional artist, and currently I work as a Graphic Designer, with some illustration work. However, it was YOUR CHANNEL that has finally helped me gain a little more confidence about my line work. I have been sketching thumbnails with ink pens in my little sketchbook with your videos on, and listening to you while you are sketching, and I am so happy with all my results! Turns out, you can't just go buy some confidence at the store. So, I'm not sure where people get confidence. But I will say this, forcing myself to use an ink pen for sketching like this is life-changing. So um.... Thank you sir. Much gratitude for all your videos.
watching this video is such a refreshing side of "learning how to draw" because you just purely sketching shapes and shading them, and try to figure things out a long the way not being bound by technique or principles just purely experience and imagination (and i love the way you speak your mind out and didn't know what to do but still come out as a character and making stories about them. its like seeing a professional artist having the same confusion as a kid that trying to draw a sky or something) much love.
I just stumbled upon your videos and I had such a revelation and breakthrough in my art! I am the type of person who always draws from the same silhouette, so seeing your videos really helped me! I was hesitant at first for trying this type of trick to do it, but I definitely do NOT regret it!!! Love your videos! Will definitely go through other videos!! 😊💕
Honestly imagine if this guy was an actual Creature design for games honestly I want him to win every award on the planet for the amount of time and patience this guy has and also creativity
So, my parents rented Killer Klowns from Outer Space several times when I was under 4 and my fear is like my third oldest memory. Once, in my 20s, I took too much Molly and I spent the following week sure that a drifter clown with a knife was going to open the back door of my house and stab me to death. When you overdose to a certain degree it basically dumps your entire serotonin supply for days, and you spend the next week flitting back and forth between feeling regular and intense, undeniable fear, and a clown was the embodiment of that for me.
i love your videos because you explain things way better than other art channels. your channel is the only channel that will make me watch an hour long video on drawing because it's so helpful
I still have a lot more to learn . I need to get better at my anatomy! It still looks cartoony and out of place like a beginniners drawing, im doing my best but i still dont know where to go from here~
As an artist who's a perfectionist and overthinks, this exercise is honestly so helpful! I've always struggled with wanting to get my exact thoughts on paper and I realize that it's kind of holding me back. I'm so glad this video showed up on my recommended feed. And to answer your question in the beginning: Yes! Tumblr is still around and quite active! :)
chief, i just want to say thank you for being an inspiration. I have stumbled upon your channel and I absolutely love your stuff. Today, i left work early and I went to Blick and got me a sketch pad. I havent picked up the good ol graphite pencils for a while. I have missed drawing and just getting lost. Thank you again!!
The fact that most of what you were guessing what the character would be I was saying the same thing made me feel normal. Honestly your drawing is just super cool ad thank you for saying these things that thumb nails are just loosening up and stuff bc when I do them I feel like a horrible artist like my art needs to be so perfect but like thank you:))
Thank you so much for this! I've been trying to figure out my films characters for weeks, and this completely helped me! I am going to watch all of your videos now!
thumbnails are addictive... i especially love drawing what comes to mind to blow my steam off... i'm severely depressed but drawing for the sake of drawing never gave me shame :)
You mentioned exactly what scared me about clowns as a child and why I am still scared of them today, seeing the movie Killer Clowns from Outer Space at a really young age!
I wish I would’ve found your channel earlier, I’m working on my first portfolio for internships right now and although I do have ideas, I found myself using the same scheme again and again and lately not really enjoying the process of my work. This brought the fun in it back and forced me to think outside the box more and more, thank youuu !!! Also your character designs are extremely interesting and creative
What I learned is that doing scribbles as to warm up and continue just thinking and flowing and scribling, might able to find something truly cool what can be changed into proper artwork.
Masterful how you subdued the music as we went outside the Club and dubbing in the outside Club street sounds - it instantly took me back to the Club days where you'd feel like you are missing out cause the music was blasting away inside
recently a breakthrough i had is finally getting how the hell perspective works in a practical matter, it just kinda suddenly clicked when I was doodling things with a vanishing point, now i can free hand things way better without reference
it’s really really nice to see a youtuber working traditionally i’ve been looking for one forever! unfortunately it seems like digital art is the default now
I loved number six too I like unique things and you don't see people drawing anything close to her. Happy you picked her. Thanks for your time teaching and letting us watch your creativity.
Your artwork is full of creativity and imagination. The monster's image is both peculiar and full of storytelling, making people want to learn more about its background and story. This ability to stimulate audience curiosity and imagination is essential for excellent works of art.
I just discovered your channel and... thank you so much for this. I draw for leisure, but with a strong will to improve, and your advice are very precious, and so so useful! Thank you again!
One of the many reasons why ai art lacks in comparison with art made by real people is the fact that it just mashes a bunch of images together to create another one of the same thing, it doesn't go through a whole exploration phase and will never be able to get inspired and create something new and fresh as a result.
I hope that you find this comment, the way how you told me just scribble and design I want to show you what I draw. I of the best character design tutorial.
Oh boy! Have I ever been in a rut for a long time! Showing me this has really got me going by helping me Envision different characters, including those in a book that I am writing. I have been so caught up in doing things the right way that this is helping me to play again Thank you so much!
You know man, since i have found your channel my desire to draw as increased so so so much. You are talented, thanks for your helpful tips and keep up the good work! 💪 Ps: if you ever think its a good video for you to make, i would really like to see video on how to draw the human anatomy like the one you made for skulls.
I am currently woking in a Dath Maul 3D model, I had a breakthrouh of how I wanted his horns to look like. I was simply giving them volume and by scraping the material off I found what I wanted them to look like.
Wow. just stumbled across this video randomly and I'm stoked! I'm a huge fan of Karl Kopinski's character design and James Gurney's imaginative drawing and I might've just added you to the list as well.
oh my god i really needed this video to focus on art finally in whole summer. i took my sketchbook and ended up doing some wood girl too but an heroin one with some pigtails hooked with chains and stuff. also a died bloody machinist with a ballet skirt that died bc practising ballet being a man. im so inspired, thank you so much!
I draw airships, not the kind that care about physics much. But the reason i started drawing them is for a game. So i am somewhat critical of their battle-effectiveness, though i do enjoy just putting down some nice shapes and working from there.
this rocks! I love doing character design, and I want to get better at designing creatures that stray more away from humanoid silhouettes, My biggest issue is thinking of what vague 'base' to work off of,, (bipedal/quadrupedal, long/short, etc.) So I'm excited to practise and let myself branch out! It's amazing that youre able to come up with several unique and individual designs one after another- to me personally thats something that shows crazy skill. (especially when you're able to leave behind designs! It shows confidence that you know you'll be able to come up with something else thats unique and cool in its own right.)
Particularly the 5th and 6th thumbnails, theyre so small and started with no real direction (in the sense of, not humanoid shaped like most of the others) and yet they both have so much personality and small yet very informative detailing. I love the 'sternum' area of the 5th design in particular! It looks like flesh being pushed away from a spine or mechanical cord going up the torso.. Its so sick!
i hate to keep rambling but the contrast that seems to come so naturally is also incredible, very strong shapes and silhouettes with great balance, I hope one day I'm able to whip out super cool unique designs with apparent ease! (i know its not ACTUALLY easy, but I'm sure you know what I mean haha)
(Using translator) Congratulations on the video! No matter how amazing AI gets, guys like you will always be a legend! I wish you great health and success!

This is the first video I've seen of you and I tried to draw along with you, I'm not entirely satisfied with the result of my design but it was really cool to give it a try and draw with someone like that ! Thank you for this (and all the valuable advices !)
I agree about asking strangers for opinions. That's why I like online art communities for that. Everyone I know personally just says "wow! cool!" to whatever I show them even if they asked first. Kind of a drag.
what an inspiring video! I was sketching along and you gave me so many new insights and just things to keep in mind. Experimenting, just having fun with art and seeing where it takes you
I done this a couple of times. Albeit skipping the sketching. One of my favorite times doing this was trying to create Little Red Riding Hood, but as rogue. During the exploration, I learned that she is rather timid from her previous run in with the wolf. At first I thought she was just the quiet mysterious girl. Now she is like a cheetah in need of a Labrador to help her out of her shell.
First time here and What an indication of how there are definitely LEVELS to this. I can't wait to get there one day. Thanks for the inspirational clip
i love to draw, i am kinda obssessed with anatomy and muscles right now, and ive created a character that im in love for about one year. Its a character that i was not used to; a different type of skin tone i was used to, curly hair (i've almost never trained curly hair before), strong muscles (i was never able to draw muscles) and it was a very unique character i was used to do. I almost only draw him, i do have another characters and i live to train torsos (because of my obssession with anatomy right now) but i love drawing this character in special, i always enjoy drawing when its him on the paper. Should i try drawing something else? in the beggining, i tried to avoid always drawing him, when i was starting to realize how many i love this character. But i couldnt, i just enjoy a lot drawing it. Should i try to contain myself and draw more my other characters? Or just sketch new designs? Or just continue in my confort space? I like to draw in general, but i always get more inspired than usual when i draw characters that i like this much
50:56 Why I didn't think of doing that before ! My sketch seem good at first and so bad when I do it bigger, and now I understand one of the reason why
This is really relaxing and nice :] I personally am not looking to improve my art right now but your voice is relaxing and your drawings are really cool

been following a few of your lessons for the past couple of weeks and i just wanted to say how much more I've improved because of your studies, more specifically the fabric and skull anatomy videos were substantial to my own growth. the way you're able to explain things and break them down for beginners like myself really attests to the level of teaching quality you provide!
while watching this video i was doing the map of my game, then bobby said "you have no idea of what you're drawing and then you end up liking it" and i looked at the map and realized that it was actually geographically correct and that it could tirn into a supercontinent that makes sense! i'm actually shocked that all the continents of the map match perfectly without even thinking about it
That laugh when creating the feminine character with the axe spoke volumes to me!☺
For a long time I have been gearing myself up to venture a single developer video game side hustle along with my 9 - 5 job, I love to draw but a lot of my style is very abstract, I had no idea how I would ideate the look and feel of the characters, in a cohesive and practical way to digitally model, I was only rough working with rough ideas in my head to begin with.
I did 150 thumbnails with a ballpoint pen. Some ideas turned out pretty decent, I have to say. But others, not at all haha
The thing is that now I have 150 character prototypes that I can use for my personal project, "Zeitgeist: O Espírito do Tempo", which is the book that I'm currently working on.
Cheers! 🔥🤘
Please turn this into a series maybe weekly or somthing , love this so much !
That means a lot. Thank you and I'm glad I can help make a difference.
watching this video is such a refreshing side of "learning how to draw" because you just purely sketching shapes and shading them, and try to figure things out a long the way not being bound by technique or principles just purely experience and imagination
(and i love the way you speak your mind out and didn't know what to do but still come out as a character and making stories about them. its like seeing a professional artist having the same confusion as a kid that trying to draw a sky or something) much love.
great video! i drew along with it! very inspiring, thank you for sharing
Honestly imagine if this guy was an actual
Creature design for games honestly I want him to win every award on the planet for the amount of time and patience this guy has and also creativity
Aw thanks, dude. I do design creatures for games and film. I live and breathe it.
@@bobbyrebholz2183 which games I must see it I must see it.
The best channel of world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🖤
So, my parents rented Killer Klowns from Outer Space several times when I was under 4 and my fear is like my third oldest memory. Once, in my 20s, I took too much Molly and I spent the following week sure that a drifter clown with a knife was going to open the back door of my house and stab me to death. When you overdose to a certain degree it basically dumps your entire serotonin supply for days, and you spend the next week flitting back and forth between feeling regular and intense, undeniable fear, and a clown was the embodiment of that for me.
i love your videos because you explain things way better than other art channels. your channel is the only channel that will make me watch an hour long video on drawing because it's so helpful
your videos are a blessing to the art community, thank you🙏
My pleasure 😊
I still have a lot more to learn . I need to get better at my anatomy! It still looks cartoony and out of place like a beginniners drawing, im doing my best but i still dont know where to go from here~
It's repetition. It's okay that your stuff is cartoony because you just don't have enough experience practicing line weight.
You're like a dad teaching his kid stuff. Very comforting
youtube randomly recommended me this and i unexpectedly watched it all. thanks for the insight man. i just got back into art this week!
Glad I could help!
Love the concept/idea generation vids.
Thank you again!!
can't stop seeing it now..."a different form, in a different time"
The fact that most of what you were guessing what the character would be I was saying the same thing made me feel normal.
Glad I could help!
thumbnails are addictive... i especially love drawing what comes to mind to blow my steam off... i'm severely depressed but drawing for the sake of drawing never gave me shame :)
This feels like it should be posted 10 years ago
What I learned is that doing scribbles as to warm up and continue just thinking and flowing and scribling, might able to find something truly cool what can be changed into proper artwork.
Masterful how you subdued the music as we went outside the Club and dubbing in the outside Club street sounds - it instantly took me back to the Club days where you'd feel like you are missing out cause the music was blasting away inside
recently a breakthrough i had is finally getting how the hell perspective works in a practical matter, it just kinda suddenly clicked when I was doodling things with a vanishing point, now i can free hand things way better without reference
i got with the flow and i drew some horrors and some other creatures i loved it and in a span of a minute i get a story for all of them
it’s really really nice to see a youtuber working traditionally i’ve been looking for one forever! unfortunately it seems like digital art is the default now
I will always be a traditionalist at heart. Digital art is fantastic but nothing matches the feeling of pencil to paper.
Number 6 reminded me in the initial stages reminded me of the "great race" from The Shadow Out of Time by HP Lovecraft
One of the many reasons why ai art lacks in comparison with art made by real people is the fact that it just mashes a bunch of images together to create another one of the same thing, it doesn't go through a whole exploration phase and will never be able to get inspired and create something new and fresh as a result.
this actually helped me so much with art block and made me so much more confident in making original characters, thank you!!
I hope that you find this comment, the way how you told me just scribble and design I want to show you what I draw.
I of the best character design tutorial.
Incredible video, plese continue to make more1 ❤❤
Ps: if you ever think its a good video for you to make, i would really like to see video on how to draw the human anatomy like the one you made for skulls.
I am currently woking in a Dath Maul 3D model, I had a breakthrouh of how I wanted his horns to look like. I was simply giving them volume and by scraping the material off I found what I wanted them to look like.
working with the ballpoint pen on the daily... forces the creativity to bubble upwards onto the page. love it!
Wow. just stumbled across this video randomly and I'm stoked! I'm a huge fan of Karl Kopinski's character design and James Gurney's imaginative drawing and I might've just added you to the list as well.
Awesome! Thank you!
oh my god i really needed this video to focus on art finally in whole summer. i took my sketchbook and ended up doing some wood girl too but an heroin one with some pigtails hooked with chains and stuff. also a died bloody machinist with a ballet skirt that died bc practising ballet being a man. im so inspired, thank you so much!
I draw airships, not the kind that care about physics much. But the reason i started drawing them is for a game. So i am somewhat critical of their battle-effectiveness, though i do enjoy just putting down some nice shapes and working from there.
I'm intrigued by the design of this creature you choose. You're also great to listen.
Thank you kindly!

Congratulations on the video!
No matter how amazing AI gets, guys like you will always be a legend!
I wish you great health and success!
Gracias.
So good and inspiring! Thank you for sharing this with us! 🙇🏻🙏💚
You are so welcome!
I'm a big believer in scribbling. Such a good stress reliever
My goddd!! Aren't you gifted?😍😍😍😍😍
Kind of a drag.
i love your attitude and curiosity! cool video man glad i found your channel
I appreciate that!
what an inspiring video! I was sketching along and you gave me so many new insights and just things to keep in mind. Experimenting, just having fun with art and seeing where it takes you
Awesome! Thank you!
I've been playing around with ink wash on waterbrush paper. So freeing. Embrace the chaos. I like your chaos :)
Yes! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video and being so open with your process, I drew along as I watched and it helped so much to keep going, awesome content ♥
i love this so much you're a wonderful artist and i enjoyed drawing along with you. keep it up!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
This was such a fun no pressure video on drawing. V enjoyable 🖤✨
Who is this man explaining such wonderful example of character designing???
really enjoyed drawing while listening to your video! thx
Tiene un gran valor sus explicaciones en concep personajes gracias 🙏👏
I’m so glad I watched your video today. It was so encouraging!
Glad it was helpful!
looked over to my phone at 18:09 and went "Oh my god Oryx" and chuckled a lil bit, love the design you went with
You inspire me to make my little Art channel better. Thank you 👍
Happy to hear that!
I adore your style! It gives me vibes of Winsor McCay and Mike Mignola!
On the refinement stage the heads on top reminds me of that forest full of hanging dolls.
Just found your channel and I am in love, I want to work in character design so badly
I forgot how great thumb nailing is. Thank you.
Glad you like it!
When I paint along with your videos, time flies by for me. Even though your video is 50 minutes long, it feels like it ends so quickly!:(
That is awesome!
First time here and What an indication of how there are definitely LEVELS to this. I can't wait to get there one day. Thanks for the inspirational clip
CLOWNS ARE THE BEST!!! ❤❤
i love to draw, i am kinda obssessed with anatomy and muscles right now, and ive created a character that im in love for about one year. I like to draw in general, but i always get more inspired than usual when i draw characters that i like this much
You remind me of mark Crilly such a motivating video
50:56 Why I didn't think of doing that before ! My sketch seem good at first and so bad when I do it bigger, and now I understand one of the reason why
really enjoyed this, helped a lot with my current mindset. thankyou so much for sharing! :)
You're so welcome!
This was so inspiring and helpful, thank you so much!!
Glad it was helpful!
This is really relaxing and nice :] I personally am not looking to improve my art right now but your voice is relaxing and your drawings are really cool
