Greetings from Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas. But this Cruise Tip should work on any cruise ship! The magic of a Universal Remote Control. (Also handy when you go to Hotels, Restaurants, etc. Why be "stuck" watching what they want you to?!)
Here's how to hook up your iPhone, iPad (would work the same with a Laptop or any HDMI enabled device)
Hope this tip makes your cruise a tad more enjoyable!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Those shows be on my nerves. I watched the safety video and was your hands video so many times my husband didn't want to go anymore. I showed him this video and we booked another cruise. symphony of the seas here we come. Excited. We couldn't watch off of our tablet anymore.
Yeah, and there's only so many times you can watch the same episode of Family Ties. Doogie Howser M.D., and Sabrina the Teenage Witch!
This trick has worked for me quite well. Just don't forget your Universal Remote!
Dont forget if it doesnt work, it might be the newer ships with cat6 in it limited the remote. So unplug the cat 6 and it will work. They keep doing work arounds to limit people watching shit on the boat. Especially people like me lol(I sit in my room a lot relaxing) I use my hotspot off my android so i only need 1 internet connection for my tablet, firestick, camera. Iphone doesnt allow wifi passthrough. So they went ahead and dont allow wifi repeaters anymore either lol(friends was taken last cruise). Luckily my phone does it, but i wont be surprised if they figure out a way to stop that too next. Gota get their money for the internet daily charge... Not paying for 3-5 devices when i usually only be using 1 anyways, and not swapping them cause thats a pain.
Unplug the CAT6 Cable. Thanks for the tip Tim!
Smart using your phone as a Hotspot. I use my Laptop.
They USED TO give Pinnacles internet for several devices, but someone sold them and now Pinnacles only get one....
Thank you, now I know how to watch tv onboard ship
You're welcome Gameboy. The HDMI Input trick will also work for your game system as well.
Now let's get back to cruising!
@@MysteryShadow1969 Brilliant, Was going to bring my laptop and now I know if I run into some rainy days I can order room service and game!
@@alexmiller7505 Sounds fun! Get the Surf & Stream Voom package and play online!
@@MysteryShadow1969 Definitely! Does Royal use the same TVs fleet wide? I'm on the Jewel at the end of the month, balcony suite.
@@alexmiller7505 thus far, every Royal Ship I've been on uses Samsung TVs.
But check this out too:

I got a cheap universal remote from Amazon and it won’t work on my tcl but it works on my Vizio at home… what brands are on these ships? I’m afraid it won’t work since it didn’t on my tcl.
I've found that most of the ships use Samsung brand TVs.
Let me know if you get it to work.
Also check out my other videos in the "Watch Anything" series, there are several variants of the Samsung TV which have different methods to change the input.
Thanks for Watching. Happy Cruising!
If I have a window laptop and I plug in the HDMI to the tv without the HDMI thing you showed at 0:30 will it work
Yes! It should work the same!
There are some different TVs on some ships. Watch the linked video at the end of this one to see the other types.
Thanks for Watching!
Hello Thanks so much for the info. I'm hoping someone can tell me if this method have worked on MSC Maravigilia.
I'm not sure what TVs are on the MSC Meraviglia. But check out the other videos in my "Watch Anything" series. There are several variants of TVs I found on Royal Caribbean Ships.
Thanks for Watching!
Wow!
There are some other TV configurations, so check the links at the end of each video.
Thanks for Watching!
Do you have a link to the apple adapter thanks!
Your local Apple Store should have them. I’ve tried knock-offs, but for some reason they do not work!
www.apple.com/shop/product/MD826AM/A/lightning-digital-av-adapter
nice. well done!
Thank You! I hope this trick helps you on your next cruise.
You neglect to mention that the device (tablet, phone etc) should be Mobil Hi Def Link (MHL) capable, otherwise it would not work.
Never thought of that since all my devices worked. Thanks for the heads up!
@@MysteryShadow1969how to you check for that?
@@AccordingToRobin I would test my devices at home before boarding the ship. Just to see if you can connect to your own TV, that way you'll be familiar with the technology and know that it should work!
@@MysteryShadow1969 I do use a Roku stick with my older tv and we the Roku in hotels whenever we go somewhere and they work, except for on Royal.
I had never seen the words Mobil Hi Def Link, wasn’t sure what that meant. Is it the same?
@@AccordingToRobin I have another video on my channel where I use a Roku device on cruise ships. Not sure what that error message you are getting is supposed to describe .
Hope this helps.
th-cam.com/video/MmS6-4lUfgk/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for sharing! Would this also work connected to our phone? For instance if I downloaded some stuff off of Netflix onto my phone. You mentioned iPads and laptops only.
YES!! This works perfectly with Smart Phones as well.
Thanks for Watching!
So which remote did you purchase?
@@Inuyasha3391 I got it from eBay, IIRC this is a AT&T U-Verse Universal Remote.
I decided on this model because it was the least expensive. :P
@@MysteryShadow1969 We have a balcony state room on Harmony of the seas coming up this summer. I also just invested on the brand new MacBook Pro which cost me a pretty penny. It has an HDMI out and when I travel I usually bring that since the hard drive has all my movies on it
Awesome @@Inuyasha3391! Enjoy your cruise!!
What an excellent video! Does anyone know if this still works in 2021?
I have several videos of how to connect your own personal devices to the Stateroom TVs.
Look for them in my channel !
Thanks for the video. I have 2 RCL cruises coming up. 2 questions: if I bring a universal remote that will work for Samsung do I need to do anything to it to get it to control the ship's TV? And I always purchase Zoom for streaming but it's really bad. Will this only work for things downloaded on to my ipad? If I'm trying to stream, won't it be constantly buffering, like it does on my ipad? Any ideas for an internet booster to get a better wifi signal? Thanks so much for your help!
This is all you need for TVs that use the HDMI inputs. Streaming can be “difficult” so I always pre-download things to watch.
Some of the newer ships use a Network input. I have a video on those too. It’s been said that if you simply disconnect the Network cable the TV will operate ‘normally’.
@@MysteryShadow1969 Thanks. Will this work on the tv's on the Oasis?
@@patwaitz6556 I have a second TV video that I took while on the Oasis of the Seas.
Watch it here: th-cam.com/video/NU9ePfFtv1I/w-d-xo.html
Which remote did you use? And can i purchase it on Amazon?
I used the AT&T U-verse Universal Remote Control. Why? Because it was the cheapest!
I did see them on Amazon, but they're much less on eBay!
Also, check out the link at the end of this video (and the next video) for some different ship TVs I found on some ships.
Thanks for watching and happy cruising!
You can use "ANY" universal remote? And basically you need -an HDMI cable, an Apple HDMI adapter, and the universal remote? I'm sailing Sunday!! Can't wait!!
Pretty much "ANY" universal remote which can control Samsung (Which is what I found on all Royal ships thus far!), your own HDMI cable, and a REAL Apple adapter, and of course, your phone/tablet/laptop!
Cruising this Sunday? I'm jealous!!
Which ship?
@@MysteryShadow1969 Oasis!! Thanks sooo..i much for the quick response! I'm checking the internet pkgs now, for my hubby, so he can watch his movies
@@cherylcanty-rashada8397, if you're looking for streaming movies, make sure you get the "Surf & Stream" Voom package.
I typically download movies before the cruise, and save some $$.
Will this work on harmony? And do you have to connect the universal remote in anyway?
I have many more “Watch Anything” videos in my channel. Check them out. Pretty sure one of those methods would work on the Harmony of the Seas!
What about using the fire stick? Do you have a video for that?
If it plugs into a HDMI port, I don't see why a FireStick wouldn't work using this method!
Fire stick does work, you will have to have a remote to change the input also and this is speaking form a carnival cruise late last year.
You would need an internet connection for a fire stick.
I’ll be to busy exploring the ship
Exploring the ship and enjoying all she has to offer is a great plan indeed.
But afterwards, when you're tired and want to wind down with some quality TV, it sure is nice to have options!
So using this method...I don't need pay for wifi package? And can I use my Android phone? I don't have an Iphone?
As long as you have a method to connect your Android Device to HDMI this should work for you. NO WiFi is required if you have pre-downloaded movies to watch before your cruise!
@MysteryShadow1969 thank you soo much. I bought the supplies...and will try at home before I leave for the cruise. Thanks again!!
Awesome @@peaceingod8008!
Don't forget to pre-download things to watch. NO WiFi needed!!
Also there are different TV configurations, so watch the featured videos at the end of this one to see the alternate ways to view your content!
@MysteryShadow1969 I've downloaded some movies and shows from Netflix and Hulu? I'm hoping it should work?? Lol. Thanks you for the heads up!
@@peaceingod8008 try turning your device to Airplane Mode. Now play the movie/show. If it plays properly, you're golden!
Do I have to have the adapter or will hdmi to hdmi work? Also what about a thumb drive with movies on it? Can I just plug that in the back of the tv?
As long as you have a way to change inputs, I don't see why that wouldn't work.
Thanks for watching. Enjoy your cruise!
Thank you for replying!!!! And your video! Such a life saver!
You're very welcome@@meplusthreelkkp! I hope this works for you. Have a great cruise!
id like tosee how to connect a TP-Link Travel router as access point to sharePrincess wifi to more than one device on one wifi connection
Should be just like connecting it at home.
I found this video helpful: th-cam.com/video/sb1yfRHjV80/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TP-LinkGlobalSupport
Don't Universal remotes need a code specific to a TV model? I have used them but many years ago and it used to take some trial and error to figure out the right code.
Modern Universal Remotes have brand specific codes you can enter. Example: For Samsung enter code 1234.
The one I have will run through common manufacturer frequencies and once you see channels changing, you know you have the right one!
I was thinking of using a Chromecast but I only have one internet package planned, and also I would need to connect my tablet and Chromecast stick on the same network. So I think that's out. Could I set up a hot spot on another device (phone) to control both? I want to be prepared in case we get stuck in the cabin. Could I download movies in less busy times to play later?
Get a Wireless Travel Router. Get one that runs on battery. You can sign into your Voom internet with it and then all your devices can log on to your router. This way you can have multiple devices logged into only one account! Take note this will absolutely positively not give you more speed. As you will be sharing that bandwidth with all your devices. Why a battery powered one? Take it with you! Carry it in your pocket as you wander the ship!
@@MysteryShadow1969 Great idea. any suggestions for brand/model?
@@prescher13 The TP-Link TL-MR3040 would be an excellent choice. I saw a few on eBay for a great price!
Does this work on the Mariner of the Seas? Apparently Royal Caribbean doesn't have the same TV on all of their ships.
I have not yet been on Mariner of the Seas. But I don’t see why this would not work. I have other “Watch Anything” videos on different ships in the fleet for some of the different ships. Many of the Amplified ships have Network TVs. Check those videos out!
Thanks for Watching!
@@MysteryShadow1969 Thanks. On a side-note, do you know if the staterooms have ethernet ports available for ships that arent in the Amplified category? I bought Voom and was going to try to hardwire if the rooms have ethernet jacks available.
@@bmoe8053 many rooms DO have Ethernet jacks. Typically on the vanity.
In some of the newer ships you’ll find an actual router in the closet!
Don’t hold your breath for more speed as they do throttle bandwidth. But it may help with latency.
@@MysteryShadow1969 Would it just use the Voom internet speed tier I already purchased? So in other words if I purchase the Voom internet package that allows streaming, will it use the same package or is the ethernet some separate free internet?
@@bmoe8053 if you get the Voom Surf & Stream that should be sufficient for your viewing pleasure! No need for any additional internet!
Before I connect do I need to put my iPhone on airplane mode?
YES!! As soon as I leave my home country’s port, airplane mode! You do not want roaming charges at sea!!!!
You can still have your WiFi and Bluetooth on while in airplane mode.
@@MysteryShadow1969 ok thanks this my first solo crew and I want to enjoy it but also not rack up a high bill as to I saw on other vids!
@@kizzyreynolds5773 most of my cruises are solo sailings. It’s a lot of fun and you can meet some of the best people!
But always keep Airplane Mode on!! This will prevent your phone from connecting to Cellular at Sea. Which I guarantee is NOT part of your phone plan! Have a great cruise!
this doesnt work on Princess newships, they custom thefirmware on the LG tv on the Royal Class
Try disconnecting the network cable. The TVs may then reset to default and allow you to connect your own HDMI.
*This is just a theory, as I have not tried it myself on Princess.
How long a cable were you using?
This cable is about six feet (two meters)
Thanks for Watching!
Work with iPhone?
YES! It sure will. Same method. But make sure you get a real Apple HDMI adapter. The knock offs do not work. I’ve tried them!
Will this work for game consoles?
Don't see why not. If it uses a HDMI cable, it should!
Watch my other TV videos as some of the newer "network" TVs on ships are a little different.
Thanks for Watching!
Code for Samsung??
It will vary from remote to remote. Check with the manufacturer of your remote.
Some universal remotes will even go through all possibilities one at a time until the TV reacts! Making things very easy.
Sorry I could not be more specific, but each manufacturer's code will be different.
When you get your Universal Remote, play with it on your home TVs so you'll be familiar with it when you get on the ship!
Thanks for Watching.
@@MysteryShadow1969 thanks for replying. Yeah I did it at home
For my Samsung but then forgot it and the instructions. Now im
On a cruise and I have all the proper wires, remote, and batteries but vent figure out the code for the Samsung.. 😮💨
@@MysteryShadow1969 I did it!! All I literally had to do is hold down the button that says Samsung! Haha I was googling all these codes! Now to try movies!
Okay so I got in the source/input options but it won’t let me choose the hdmi option… even with my phone and my wires hooked up. I made sure to get the apple cord
Great @@Dadlifehustle96! Now go enjoy shows you've downloaded. There are only so many times you can watch "Building an Icon"...
Any work around if you're not using an apple device?
This trick should work with any device that uses a HDMI cable!
Happy cruising!
Do I have to purchase a certain universal remote to make it work
Any Universal Remote should work. I've found that on most (if not all!) Royal Caribbean ships, the stateroom TVs are usually Samsung. You can save yourself a few minutes of your vacation by pre-programming Samsung before you go!
At home I have a samsung tv will that be sufficient
More than likely your Samsung remote will work@@robertaste1795! Please report your findings when you go. Happy cruising!
All you have to do is use input buttons on tv or use samsung round selector
philippe lemaire
Some cruise ships tv's have those buttons disabled.
Back ground music is very annoying, get rid of it please.
Yep knock offs don’t work.
Yup. Tried the knock-offs. Only the real Apple one works!
Thanks for Watching!
Please kill the music!!! I could barely make out what you were saying.
Thanks for the feedback. The music is barely audible on my PC. But I’ll check on other devices.
You’re absolutely right. On a phone the music is much louder than on PC.
I’ll be sure to make adjustments on future videos.
Just bring a fire stick
Yes, that could work. But you will need a GOOD Internet connection!
Internet on Cruise ship are the most expensive package at sea. Spend more US$300 for the whole week.
The internet connection isn't good enough onboard ship for streaming devices
@@greenchoice1810 I personally used Royal Caribbean’s voom package for just one device and didn’t miss a beat as far as speed on the ship and coco cay
Or Chromebook and SD CARD (full of movies).
Pls tell me
Any HDMI connected device should work the same.
But check the link at the end of this video to see some different TV hookups.

Get rid of the background music. And enunciate your words.
Thanks for the feedback.
Found out on a PC the music is barely audible, whereas on a mobile it’s quite loud.
Your not suppose watch tv at 400 a day Lmfao
Some people do. Each person enjoys cruising differently. Just giving an option.
