  • Part of a series about using a Raspberry Pi to help control the model railroad using JMRI (Java Model Railroad Interface) which lets you program DCC decoders, run trains, throw turnouts, control signals, etc.
This video shows how to connect use a smartphone to connect to JMRI running on a Raspberry Pi to control locomotives. I use Engine Driver for Android (play.google.co..., but there's a similar app called WiThrottle for iPhones and iPads (apps.apple.com....

If you have friends donate their old phones after a phone upgrade then you will have lots cheap wireless throttles for you and your guests. If you use those phones then you can use your regular phone for internet and mail while running trains on the old phones.

I have two older phones for just this, yes :) They can't do screen recording though, and not everyone has that luxury! But, it's definitely an option. My old club turned me on to that trick - the T-Trak, N-Trak, and custom modular layout all used NCE or Digitrax with JMRI providing a Wi-Fi network, and most people just used their previous phone to run trains and keep their other phone available for regular use. Iain, Rhythm Railroad channel on Y.T. has a lot of good stuff that may be useful to you. He's modeled N scale and now has a HO scale layout.

Great video. Can you share how you store your rolling stock? I see a pretty nice looking case in the background on the benchwork. Looking forward to the next video!

Yes, I'll do a short video on them! They're very basic and probably wouldn't hold up to a lot of transporting between trains shows, etc. but work fine for storage at home. I'll try to record something in the next few days. Iain

what is the default password for the RPi-JMRI network?

If you used the M Steve Todd image, his website (mstevetodd.com/rpi) says the following for the password:
"you'll see a WiFi network named "RPi-JMRI". Select it and enter "rpI-jmri" when prompted for the key (note that 3rd character is a capital "eye")."
      Hope this helps! Iain
