A big thumbs up for Engine Driver - when we have our club's ON30 modular layout at train shows (which we will be doing this coming weekend at Deland, in Florida), we often have 10 or more people running trains using Engine Driver. What I like about it is - apart from the 'cool factor', telling visitors that I am running the trains with my phone - is to offer the phone to the little kids, saying "do you want to blow the horn?"

I have Withrottle on an Ipad that was my wifes, she has a new one. I used the light version and moved up to the payed one and you have a power button and you can run more trains I do two. On my phone I use engine driver you can also run two trains and set the throttles to run in a way to do shuttling. You can do quite a bit with it. There are tons of switches you can change to make it work the way you want. I usually set it so the phone will not answer. The other two I haven't tried, but I think I will. Boy this was a informative video. Every one gets better and better. Your series on DCC++Ex is really hitting all the bases. Your video are like a good book you can't put down.

You guys are WAY above my power grid. I just started modeling RR’s and I get confused when I have more than 2 wires to deal with. So I’m gonna forget about street lights on my layout until I get more comfortable with forward/ reverse controls. :-)
Great look at phone throttle apps, Jimmy. For now, I'm sticking with my ESU CabControl, which uses a purpose-built Android based throttle.

In the WiThrottle you can enable track power under Settings (at least in the paid version). Great app, been using it for quite some time now. If you get the paid version, you can control up to 4 trains simultaneously on an iPad, while the iPhone can control up to two trains simultaneously. Simultaneously meaning having multiple throttles open on the same screen. Great when shunting with multiple locos

I still cannot get over not having tactile buttons for a throttle. For secondary throttles, I think they are a great solution. But if I am operating a train, I want to be able to look at the train and not have to find the buttons on a touchscreen.
One app that I am looking at is the Z21 app. It has a panel pro type interface for switches which I am looking to integrate for my Z scale layout.
Some of us by standers were talking on line last night (from Maine, to NY, to Penn. to Calif.) about both you Heath and Jimmy. We touched on this subject, but all agreed, it's getting to complicated. But we did agree, both Human(c)ity Junction and DIY and Digital Railroad are two of the BEST on You Tube.

Z21 has an app that runs lots trains and anything has DCC. The app has also cv’s controls so can change the speed of starting and stopping and you can switch your points in and out
great idea! i was about to order the old fashion ones but what else do i need to run the train, the brain part on the table
So you can either build a wifi DCC++EX base station out of an arduino, which I have done a video on, or you can connect an old computer to an existing system if it has a USB interface and use JMRI. Here is a link to my build tutorial for DCC++EX th-cam.com/video/DVDNi9U_K68/w-d-xo.html
I don't consider turning off the train if the app isn't open a bad thing. You need to pay attention to your train. If there is a problem and the app isn't open, your train could be on the floor. But good video Jimmy.
Yes but everytime you get spam calls or text and you train stops would be very annoying.

There is RtDrive Dcc++, Android application for DCC++. The version for DCC++-EX will be released in next months
Wi-Throttle does have a track power on/off on the settings page.
Yes the paid version does. WiThrottle Lite does not.

Is there a DCC contoller app that can't run on JMRI or DCC++ EX or something?
Not that I know of, manufacturers may have their own proprietary apps, but in terms of a generic one, I do not know of one.

Do I have to have a circuit board?
No but if you don’t, JMRI is required to run this. JMRI is free, but you have to get the hardware to hook it up to the DCC system.

My thought is to just go buy a cheap prepaid android phone, and let the subscription expire. Use it as a dedicated throttle.
