Chuck House Tito claims he was given the matador gimmick cause he was due for a huge push as wwf was planning to expand into Latin America. Vince changed his mind and expanded into Canada instead pushing the Harts and other Canadians. One of the first times he used the gimmick was in Spain where he went over the undertaker
Chuck House I'm with you, man. Just met Tito @ a signing. What a wonderful, nice man. Told him how upset I was when Macho beat him for the IC belt. He had a good sense of humor, saying that it was Elizabeth's fault(that Liz got Randy over). Always felt he had much more to give than he was allowed.
When I was a little kid at a house show I was booing Greg really badly from the rail. So he stopped and started looking at me and I was like "Bring it on!" and then he gestured like he was gonna come at me and I jumped behind my dad. LOL!!!
One of the Greatest rivalries of all time . I saw them Wrestle in Indy at a WWF show back in the 80's , they were the match before the Main Event ( Hogan Vs John Stud ) Tito and Valentine stole the show. We were 5 rows back from the ring and could hear the slaps , Kicks, and punches being landed It was by far the Best Match on the Card ! Valentine should have been a World Champion, he was just so good in the ring, on the mic, and he could get some heat . Tito was a great in ring performer, who was great on the Mic , he had a charisma , and was the perfect baby face. I wish Wrestling could be this good again !
The WWF from the early and mid 80's was my favorite era (Wrestlemania, Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, WWF cartoons, WWF ice cream bars, thumbwrestlers, Saturday Night's Main Event, and of course Valentine & Beefcake, and Strike Force)!
Greg Valentine was the one who brought Jimmy Hart to the WWF; ironically, with Jimmy, Valentine was defeated by Tito Santana. Valentine was so pissed off that he actually destroyed the belt! Memories!
Last time I saw Tito was probably in like 2001, he was my gym teacher when I was in 6th grade, and he was in amazing shape then... I would love to see him again.
As Jesse Venture use to say, "who could ever deny Chico Santana and the flying burrito off the ropes?" But the Hammer was always at a whole other level. He was the chubby version of the HitMan Bret Hart. All business and a wrestler's wrestler in the ring.
Greg the Hammer Valentine was absolutely correct. Valentine and Santana were main event attractions during many wrestling shows without Hogan. Those guys were consummate entertainers and professionals. I liked every one of their matches. Valentine had his patented figure four leg lock. And I think Santana had the flying tackle.
In 1979, a new pro wrestling publication hit newsstands and magazine racks across the nation. It was Pro Wrestling Illustrated. When the first issue went to press, Greg Valentine was ranked at #3 in what is now the WWE and at #2 in the Most Hated Wrestlers category. And condolences to the family of Matt "Rosey" A'noai, who answered that final bell today.
The Hammer. Those were the days. Inter-Continental battles. The figure 4. Great job on this whoever did it. I would think there is a HUGE market for documentary type stuff with these old wrestlers from the 80's. Everybody loves nostalgia.
Smashing the belt was a scripted part of the 'blowoff', so that they could then introduce the new belt design, and yes, it was a big part of the added drama of the angle. Valentine was never a very flashy worker, and Santana not the showiest of personalities, but both guys knew how to use ring psychology to tell a good story.
the ending was really tight when they were badmouthing each other and then it shows that they were in the same room the whole time filming together and then they get up and shake each other's hand!
I was in the Baltimore Civic Center in June 1985 the night Tito won the belt back in a cage. The put the match on top, over a Hogan-Piper match. The crowd popped so loud when Santana kicked the door in Greg's face.

Valentine versus Santana has to be one the greatest rivals in WWF/WWE history. Greg had very good fueds against Rowdy Roddy Piper in the Mid Atlantic area too.
CHUCK HOUSE THANK YOU FOR THAT # 1 ! COLISEUM HOME VIDEO GRUDGE MATCH (WWF) TITO SANTANA VS GREG VALENTINE GREATEST IC TITLE MATCH EVER ! STEEL CAGE MATCH FOR THE IC TITLE ! (1984)
I met them at WWE Axxess in Houston. I told them that they carried the card. They matched each other move for move, hold for hold. Their matches were far more entertaining than Hulk Hogan's Match. Both of these guys should have become World Heavyweight Champions but neither one was ever given the opportunity.
i met greg at a wcpw show and asked him about breaking the intercontinental title after losing it to tito...he said "They had to buy a new belt, but vince could afford it."
What was Tito Santana mentioning about WM1 not selling cause of him vs Valentine? I though Tito went against The executioner in the first match and Valentine against Junkyard Dog for the IC strap?
+Justin Martin He meant that it didn't make sense for them to have the match at WrestleMania, because the money was already there from Hulk/Mr. T vs. Piper/Orndorff. Having them fight at WM wasn't going to make any more money. It made better business sense to save it and have the blowoff further down the road.
People forget, this was a feud that major over in a big way back then. I remember when they televised the 'blowoff' match in the cage (something rarely seen on TV in those days), and fans going apeshit when Santana won the I-C belt back.
Tito sounds like such a dignified man. My auntie milagros didn't know much about wrestling but she really liked him. Love you and miss you auntie. I know I wasn't the most well behaved little kid in the world but I hope you think I turned out ok
@hailwindham keep in mind these guys came from an era VERY different from the last 15-20 years. they seriously didn't make a lot of money and now probably don't have a lot to live on for retirement, etc. any money they made back then went up their nose or to hotel rooms (wrestling companies paid per show, not accommodations, etc). a lot of the same ways are still in place, but they make more annually, rather than get paid per show. that was something vince was smart to implement-contracts.
I think if these two feuded today or even ten years ago during the attitude era, Tito would have been the heel and Valentine would have been the face no doubt.
@lukecage34 No they're not. I have this interview & they never talk like it's real. The two promos at the end are there responses to the question "What would a promo for one of your matches sound like?" (or something like that). And if they're talking like it's real, then was Santana talking about how they were being told about what the return match would be?
Being a great midcarder is not a knock. During this era the midcard was as strong if not stronger than the headliners. Being in the odd main event doesn't make you a full-time headliner. But I enjoyed their work anyway.
***** I take it back and stand corrected. Thank-you for the insight. I think that was probably one of the things which made Wrestling better then than now. And that was a great feud.
Bored Now - You're a good fan. I have realized too that many of the Santana vs Valentine matches were main event attractions. Valentine even stated that both he and Santana sold out arenas on their own without Hulk Hogan during their legendary feuds. Wrestling was so amazing and unique during the golden era. Rowdy Roddy's Pipers Pit and Captain Lou Albano were the only other wrestlers that can sell out arenas without Hogan due to their unpredictable skits.
Greg Valentine sounds like Nick Nolte's brother, but LOOKS like any USA trailer park grandmother, lol 😂. He literally should be cast in Kate Segals role in a S.O.A reboot.
The way I recall it, Tito had "just" come back....so they were trying to set-up a future encounter...Tito came back and started sending a message with his newly acquired figure 4 finisher! Nice old-school slow-brewing suspense...so I'm guessing they decided not to rush it, with the card already nicely loaded (for the time). Too bad though....
my favorite moment is when Santana regained the belt from valentine in the cage. greg smashes the belt against the cage and leaves. tito picks up the belt; its all trashed and raises it over his head in victory. incidentally, it was about that time they introduced the new IC title. before it was smaller with a green strap. hope im not the only person who remembers this :)
Greg the hammer was a client of mine we all know wrestling was a show but I can tell you this man could drop most men even bigger than him so quick they'd wish it was a hammer. He was solid Fearless and really a nice guy. If you cross that line in real life he'd walk away he was more than aware of the damage she could do
Greg and Tito had a HOT feud going on at the time of Wrestlemania but they chose not to put the match on the card which I thought was a big mistake. Does anyone know why? Instead Valentine wrestled JYD and Tito wrestled some jobber by the name of The Executioner.
@FerretJohn Odd considering how important this event was to the WWF, how worried Vince was about it that Vince wouldn't throw everything at it just in case the main event didn't come off well which was a possibility with Mr. T. wrestling. At least with Valentine-Santana even upstaging it, you're guarnateed a good show with good work and psychology and it won't come off looking fake. I never knew that about the 'cutioner.
@hailwindham That's unfortunate. Was that the 1st & only time you met "The Hammer"? I myself have heard he's very nice & accomodating to his fans. I can only guess perhaps that he was having a bad day & was irritable as we all get at times when having a bad day. Still, when you finally get to meet for the first time someone who's work you've admired for many years & he treats you in that manner (even if it's not personal), it is a huge disappointment.
Spoken like a true NWA wrestling fan. I never thought about that, but Valentine would have been a perfect fit...along with Orndoff. They would have been great replacements. The Horsemen were never the same after Arn and Tully left. That was the start of the NWA/ WCW downfall. Just the money Greg and Paul were making in WWF was too good to leave.
"I'm reading the comments and I gotta agree with everyone talking about Valentine in the Horseman... he would have fit perfectly!!" Except that he wasn't a Southerner.
Look, Greg did a show in a town near me. I think it was Carolina Championship Wrestling. Anyway, he was sitting at a table signing autographs and I had this event brochure that I wanted him to sign so I got in line. When its my turn to get an autograph he waves his hand once from side to side as if to say "get that shit outta here". I didnt know what he meant so I stood there for a second and he said very meanly " IM not signing those!!". He should be happy people still care, what a prick
I was a HUGE mark for Tito Santana. Then they did the stupid ass El Matador thing... damn it Vince.
+Chuck House i was just about to type something about how fucking terrible the el matador gimmick was
Chuck House Tito claims he was given the matador gimmick cause he was due for a huge push as wwf was planning to expand into Latin America. Bad gimmick. I hear vince now "We can trademark it"
When I watched 'pro' wrestling, Greg 'The Hammer' Valentine & Tito Santana was my most favorite rivalry.
Greg Valentine and Tito Santana, two of the greatest of all time.
When I was a little kid at a house show I was booing Greg really badly from the rail. So he stopped and started looking at me and I was like "Bring it on!" and then he gestured like he was gonna come at me and I jumped behind my dad. LOL!!!
DuckTalesWooHoo1987 same here in 1988 lol. He picked up a chair and acted like he was going to throw it at us. House shows used to be great
DuckTalesWooHoo1987 😂😂

As a kid I loved Chico Santana and that flying burrito finisher.
I booked them to headline an indie show in Ontario, Canada about ten years ago. Both very professional (obviously) and down to Earth men.
Agree, no mental illness ,sock puppet -mankind gold dust crap from these two!
So true. No goofy gimmicks needed by these two greats.
This should bring Tito back - he looked like he kept himself in great shape!
Great concept for a shoot video. Look forward to watching the whole interview.

As Jesse Venture use to say, "who could ever deny Chico Santana and the flying burrito off the ropes?" But the Hammer was always at a whole other level. He was the chubby version of the HitMan Bret Hart. All business and a wrestler's wrestler in the ring.
+LukeTheDrifter07 in your dreams bud.
+LukeTheDrifter07 Good luck with Beefcake

Greatest IC title feud ! Back when the IC title meant something!
Two legendary professionals having mutual respect for one another.
Greg and Tito. Two awesome wrestlers who were fun to watch inside and outside the ring.
nice to see the 2 ring technicians shake hands some 25 years later after making a great feud and great entertainment.
And condolences to the family of Matt "Rosey" A'noai, who answered that final bell today.
that's part of the interview. they're both asked to cut a promo typical of what one would have looked like back for that feud
Turn the music up a bit more, that way we can just lip read. What an annoyance!
The volume level of the background music in your video overpowers the commentary by Valentine & Santana. Watching it is a waste of time.
This was the feud that first drew me into wrestling. Tito's knee being torn up, Valentine smashing the IC title belt... Classic shit.
Kayfabing after all these years.
mayormc that was a shoot
Michael Allan Rubin no it wasn’t kiddo you can easily tell this is kayfabe
@@philkessel8162 no it was a shoot
The Hammer.
Those were the days.
Inter-Continental battles.
The figure 4.
Great job on this whoever did it.
I would think there is a HUGE market for documentary type stuff with these old wrestlers from the 80's.
Everybody loves nostalgia.

I love the music in the background..
This series is a truly brilliant concept..
Bring this series back Sean!!
the ending was really tight when they were badmouthing each other and then it shows that they were in the same room the whole time filming together and then they get up and shake each other's hand!
Why can't wrestling be like this anymore?
Because the wrestlers of that era are either retired or dead. Damn shame.
I was in the Baltimore Civic Center in June 1985 the night Tito won the belt back in a cage. The put the match on top, over a Hogan-Piper match. The crowd popped so loud when Santana kicked the door in Greg's face.

Greg looks just like my aunt Linda..
HBK does a perfect figure 4 leg lock and he also has his own variation of it as well that looks awesome.
Valentine versus Santana has to be one the greatest rivals in WWF/WWE history. Greg had very good fueds against Rowdy Roddy Piper in the Mid Atlantic area too.
there fued carried the wwf for 2 years straight!, mcmahon send them a check now!!!
1:33 my favorite part. Learn something new everyday
wow this is cool....im gonna watch all of these.
THEIR MATCH IN A STEEL CAGE FOR THE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE WAS A CLASSIC FOR THE AGES ! 1984 .
CHUCK HOUSE
THANK YOU FOR THAT # 1 !
COLISEUM HOME VIDEO
GRUDGE MATCH (WWF)
TITO SANTANA VS GREG VALENTINE
GREATEST IC TITLE MATCH EVER !
STEEL CAGE MATCH FOR
THE IC TITLE ! (1984)
I remember watching it live, l just got into wrestling back then, l was in grade 4, that cage match was epic
1985, but yeah.
He also has one of the better "fall on his face" collapses too hahaha Loved it when he did that.
I met them at WWE Axxess in Houston. I told them that they carried the card. They matched each other move for move, hold for hold. Their matches were far more entertaining than Hulk Hogan's Match. Both of these guys should have become World Heavyweight Champions but neither one was ever given the opportunity.
Seeing these two wrestle at the Spectrum you could hear the kicks and punches ...
Awesome. The reuinion of 2 legends.
Why did they stop doing this series but kept that You Shoot stuff going
Rest In Peace, Hammer. Thanks for all the memories in my childhood. *tear*
He is not dead
Background music should be in the BACKGROUND. That seems pretty self explanatory.
Awesome. 2 of the best.
I don't know. Orndorff was not a team guy. But, I could see him being similar to Tully Blanchard if he was with the group.
Great performers!!!!
Valentine-Santana feud is one of the top 10 greatest feuds in pro wrestling history
Does Greg Valentine, Brad Armstrong, Ricky Morton, Bobby Eaton, Eddie Gilbert, Randy Poffo or Lanny Poffo have any kids that wrestle?
i met greg at a wcpw show and asked him about breaking the intercontinental title after losing it to tito...he said "They had to buy a new belt, but vince could afford it."

Having them fight at WM wasn't going to make any more money. It made better business sense to save it and have the blowoff further down the road.
+Rich Keeney Boom. Lawyered.
He looks good for 57 and can still wrestle. respect.
i agree. this feud seems to almost be forgotten. this was great stuff and youre right, they did go apeshit! they told better stories back then.
Wasn't a story he hurt his knee for real dude
People forget, this was a feud that major over in a big way back then. I remember when they televised the 'blowoff' match in the cage (something rarely seen on TV in those days), and fans going apeshit when Santana won the I-C belt back.
@JuliusC1973 Greg was a fire plug of a man.... he wasn't the biggest, strongest but you know he was one of the toughest SoBs to enter that ring.
Marreta Valentino X Tito Santana me lembro bem das lutas deles 2, o Marreta era o mestre na chave quádrupla
Doesn't Greg Valentine play in Slayer???
Tito sounds like such a dignified man. My auntie milagros didn't know much about wrestling but she really liked him. Love you and miss you auntie. I know I wasn't the most well behaved little kid in the world but I hope you think I turned out ok
two awesome legends

I think if these two feuded today or even ten years ago during the attitude era, Tito would have been the heel and Valentine would have been the face no doubt.
@LSweet2007 Dude Really? Greg Valentine never played in Slayer. You're confusing him with Jeff Hanneman
i seen greg a number of times in the mid 80s in my gym
@lukecage34 No they're not. I have this interview & they never talk like it's real. The two promos at the end are there responses to the question "What would a promo for one of your matches sound like?" (or something like that). JasonL77 it was very real they stiffed each other
Roddy Piper, Scott Hall (when healthy) too Mr. Perfect won the AWA World Championship so not sure that counts :(
they need to have a re-match Greg Valentine vs Tito Santana in wwe for one night only
Two great mid-card workers must have had some great matches.
+Bored Now MID CARD ??? Are you fucking serious man. They Main Evented shows in the 80's dude... get a clue..
Being a great midcarder is not a knock. During this era the midcard was as strong if not stronger than the headliners. Being in the odd main event doesn't make you a full-time headliner. But I enjoyed their work anyway.
+Joe W. Their steel cage match in Baltimore in 85 sold the arena! Still regarded as one of the best IC title matches ever!
***** I take it back and stand corrected. Thank-you for the insight. I think that was probably one of the things which made Wrestling better then than now. And that was a great feud.
Bored Now - You're a good fan. I have realized too that many of the Santana vs Valentine matches were main event attractions. Greg Valentine sounds like Nick Nolte's brother, but LOOKS like any USA trailer park grandmother, lol 😂. He literally should be cast in Kate Segals role in a S.O.A reboot.
1:33 The crowd got quiet? Wow...They probably weren't sure if Greg Valentine really did break his leg...
Just so u know Tito actually threw that belt away in the arena trash can because he knew it was all beat up looking an was gonna be replaced
Executioner was the "217 lb." Buddy Rose.
Tito Santana one of my favs
the break within the interviewing was annoying. Great clip tho
Why does the old woman hate the guy in the glasses?
One of the greatest fueds of all time.
@hailwindham That's unfortunate. Was that the 1st & only time you met "The Hammer"? I myself have heard he's very nice & accomodating to his fans. I can only guess perhaps that he was having a bad day & was irritable as we all get at times when having a bad day. Still, when you finally get to meet for the first time someone who's work you've admired for many years & he treats you in that manner (even if it's not personal), it is a huge disappointment.
this interview is as interesting as a warrior hogan match
The one question I have to ask after watching this video: why does Greg the Hammer Valentine still wear sleeveless shirts with his old lady arms?
Spoken like a true NWA wrestling fan. I never thought about that, but Valentine would have been a perfect fit...along with Orndoff. They would have been great replacements. The Horsemen were never the same after Arn and Tully left. That was the start of the NWA/ WCW downfall. Just the money Greg and Paul were making in WWF was too good to leave.
Tito has that damn promo voice
"I'm reading the comments and I gotta agree with everyone talking about Valentine in the Horseman... he would have fit perfectly!!"
Except that he wasn't a Southerner.
HAHA Mr. Solis!!! Tito Santana used to be my spanish teacher in 8th grade wooo
Hammer was great. An all time fav of mine.
@oscarforce1 all feuds in the 80s were awesome and that is when wrestling was actually good . the golden days of wrestling as they called it.
Valentine looks like everyone of my whiteboy friends grandmas!
SDallstar lmao
SDallstar
I was like "dang grandma Ester, I didn't know you wrestled!"
Whoa there Chico, you're racist! No you're not. That was actually funny..
SDallstar 😂😂
Look, Greg did a show in a town near me. I think it was Carolina Championship Wrestling. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
the battle.. the tried and true fight to see which man will fall asleep first!! They're both so.. TIRED!!
I would rather slap my momma than take a punch from "The Hammer"
we the WRESTLING fans never get what we want do we?
@JuliusC1973 Hell yeah man! I agree 100%
i also agree that greg the hammer valentine had the best figure four leg lock. i think that santana learned it from him.
