The Alola Champion thing? Yeah, thats not an error. Its intentional. "You'll see" it says, and see we did! The Alolan Champion is YOU. THE PLAYER. In several interviews its been stated that the idea behind Sun and Moon was "what if there was no leauge"... this was the original plan. More primitive and tribal, like a traditional Island Pilgamage in ancient Hawaii... nothing was changed at the last minute EXCEPT (POSSIBLY) Kukui being the final challenge at the new league, as its rumored (unconfirmed) the original plan was for the big championship fight to be against your mother...
That much is more the published content, but Hoops brings a strong point that they were most likely going to have the same setup as the previous core series entries. Again, keep in mind that the timeline between XY and Sun and Moon are different, in that XY was in the past compared to Sun and Moon. The other rumour that makes sense was that Leon, champion of Galar, was supposed to originally be the Alola champion but then the concept of having no league and changing the formula of the game was introduced. It could very well be they tabled Leon in favour of this new concept, and used him in the games following so that they didn't have to come up with an entirely new character.
sun and moon is based on the orange islands a lot imo, that one anime arc has a massively outsized impact on the games. the sevii islands, sun and moon, mega evolution, terastalization, etc.
Also, there is an unofficial fighting gym dojo in the same city as the psychic gym in Kanto, it may have been a previous gym which was beaten by Sabrina's because Fighting is weak againts Psychic, and there's an episode of the anime with a trainer trying to have his own circus themed gym in Kanto (a trainer with a whip, who was trying to make his sandshrew immune to water by making his dive in a small pool) Maybe there are more than 8 official gym in each region, but only 8 badges are required, and in the game, the players only visit 8 cities with gym in a region (we could assume that there are way more cities and towns than the typical 10 to 12-ish, in the lore), which would explain why some trainers have different badges than the ones we know Or maybe, they're just badges from other regions... but I don't know if they would be allowed
Honestly the more than 8 gyms always made sense to me. Particularly in the anime as getting one badge required solving a mystery and the other requiring you not getting turned into a doll. 😅 I always saw it as 8 being the bare minimum required to participate in the league. Though now I’m curious what the maximum is and what qualifies as just showing off. 😄 I could totally see the green and yellow standard balls that appear in artwork as optional colors only available to champions or elite trainers.
What's interesting is that the Fighting Dojo was originally the official Gym for Saffron City, but was then usurped by Sabrina and her Psychic Pokémon. And in Black2 and White2, three of the original eight Gyms are taken out of the roster for new ones. So it's very possible that Pokémon Gyms need to hold up a certain standard in order to qualify as official League Gyms, which lines up with the anime where they have to pass inspection or could get shut down.
My theory for Alola champion is that the X/Y cameos were added as a "we skipped Pokemon Z but still have some content for it" & the games were originally meant to take place at the same time/slightly before XY/at unspecified time so the champion the hiker mentions is the Alola player character
I think it’s possible the hiker from Alola mentioning his region’s champion in X and Y was just grandstanding like “oh well you think YOUR champion is so great ours is even better!” despite his region not actually even having one yet.
It would be cool if we can go back to a pokemon region but in a breath of a wild-type thing in that the land scape kinda changed, but you can recognize key points in it. Like take Kanto, for example, and we have more towns and possibly more gyms while still recognizing other towns/landmarks. But pokemon haven't been good at making towns. Another cool town idea is I'd they can take a page from Colossem/XD they had more proper looking towns more so than like SV
I really don't know why Game Freak has still not created an Ice/Snow/Glacial/Blizzard/Frost/Tundra/Aurora Ball. It would have those rates: *During Blizzard: Ice Type Pokémon 3x. Other type Pokémon 2x; *During Snow/Hail: Ice Types 2.5x. Other Types 1.5x; *During Any other Weather: Ice Types 2x. Other Types 0.25x.
Do you think they'd ever make a full pokeball customization feature in the game? Could theoretically be interesting though might convolute things a bit but if they keep it minimum it could be a bit fun.
I'd personally love something like this - I spent more time designing my seals in Diamond than was good for my sanity. But, at the same time, I know that it's something that people would find a way to abuse. Any time you let gamers make their own designs it's only a matter of time before they make offensive ones. Gamefreak would really need to think hard about how they could avoid this.
If so, I hope we could change the colour of the top, the colour of the bottom, and maybe the visual effect when the ball opens. But to make it fair, the custom ball won't have any catching bonuses or an increased catch rate.
I'd love to be able to swap what Pokéball a Pokémon is in first. I enjoy catching Shiny Pokémon in matching Pokéballs where available but sometimes I gotta throw a Quick Ball at a Pokémon before it tries KO'ing itself. XD
For the Hiker who mentions Alola having a champion, since time travel and spacial distortions are known part of the world in Pokemon, I like to headcanon that he's actually a time traveler or displaced in time. So there COULD be a champion of Alola for him, but it just hasn't happened yet. And his line saying "you'll find out in due time" makes it sound like he knows he's in the past and it's directed at the player, who will go on the play Sun/Moon and become champion, which could mean he's talking about YOU. We've had a lot of time travelers and people from other universes in side quests in the main games, so I wouldn't put it past the devs to add a subtle one as a hint for the next generation. (Edit: fixed some spelling mistakes.)
We actually do know that at one point Game Freak was planning on having a normal gym/e4 system in sun and moon, but late in the development they decided to switch it up. So it makes sense that the person in XY said the champion of Alola is really something else because at that point in development, there was still a champion.

Seeing you mention the other mystery badges reminded me of a question I've always had about the Pokemon anime logic. I know it would only be theory, but i would love to hear your opinion. What happens after people lose at the league championship? It's an annual event, and you need 8 badges to enter. There are hundreds of people that enter, and only 1 winner. So, do they need to get 8 new badges if they want to try again next year, or are they already eligible? What if they don't get all 8 badges within the year? Do they carry over, or do you need to start over? If they do need 8 new badges, would they just fight the same gym leaders? They already beat them. After the 3rd year of fighting the same gym leader, you show up "YOU AGAIN?! Just take the badge and get out". Maybe they do travel to the other gyms to get those badges instead. But then we take into account pokemon origin where Brock showed the gym leaders take your badge count into consideration when they fight you. Would you be rolling through those gyms with your level 60 league semi-finalist team against their level 10 you don't have any badges yet team? I can go on, but i think you get the idea. It's something I've always been curious about, and to my knowledge has never been officially explored.
Elite four being former champions makes a lot of sense - in games there are many pokemon trainers aside of you and your rival and you do not have big dialogs with them, I thnk we can safely assume that at least few of them (especially those in victory roads) are also aiming to become champion. And getting this title seems more like proof of your capability than actual title that you hold until someone beats you (only in kanto games the champion is your rival + in rematches they have vastly different and stronger teams). So I guess that if you get the champion title you are considered when spot in govement/sport organization job opens - like elite four/official champion heck even gym leaders could be former champions (We were assuming and then kind of confirmed in pokemon the origins that gym leaders are required to use specific teams depending on how many badges challenger has - this was unfortunatelly poorly implemented to Scarlet/Violet hope they will fix it in gen 10 by scaling gym leaders teams to your badge count). This is similiar to sportsman retiring from professional playing and becoming a coach after some time - he/she proved their capabilities and know this from the okayers perspective.
I like to think in the pokemon world you can order poke balls with custom aesthetics, but they can be expensive. This could explain the green poke balls. Even in RBY, the parcel you pick up for Oak is a custom poke ball, so Oak could have ordered one with a different colour or his initials engraved on it or something
It's worth noting that to enter the Indigo League in the games, you only have to earn 8 of a total of at least 16 badges. In the games, it makes sense that there are only 8 gyms that the player can go for to enter the Pokemon league. Adding extra gyms the player wouldn't be required to beat would bloat the games. But in the more realistically-scaled world of the anime, it makes sense that there would be more than 8 to allow trainers to earn 8 badges without having to travel too far within the year.
I always wondered if in the Pokémon world the normal Pokéballs can be customized color-wise, but we don't see it a lot since the main/player characters are all kids who don't have a lot of money to get them.

A few changes id wish theyd impliment with pokeballs are. Type specific balls obviously they have a few with the net ball. I know weve had the ability to customize ball animations when we throw out the pokemon but what if you could just change the color like a green ball. And one final idea is the balls change to reflect the pokemon inside. Like its cool to catch a groudon in a pokeball to make them match but what if you caught it with an ultra ball and the ultra ball was red with the yellow turing black. Or even cooler the mark of groudon appears on the top just my thoughts cuz i like to "match" the pokemon to the pokeball

What if the Backpacker is from Galar or Paldea? He could be traveling the world and happened to stop in Alola at some point. He's not from Kanto/ Johto because Lance is the current Champion there, not from Hoenn because Steven or Wallace are champion (Universe dependent), Not Sinnoh because Cynthia is Champion, not Unova because Iris is the champion & he's not explicitly from Alola because there IS no league System there. So, he has to be a traveler from either Paldea, where Geeta & Nemona reside or Galar, where Leon resides. The guy just happened to get a Souvenir in Alola and gives it to the player. The only Regions WITH Champions are Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Galar & Paldea at the time you meet the backpacker.
I believe it's like Galar there is the regular 8 gyms a trainer can go to but there are other gyms you can battle but those gyms are much weaker then thr main 8 so why we don't hear about them.
I think that there was a Champion in Alola during X/Y, just that this Champion wasn't an official Champion from an actual League. This also goes perfectly with that the hiker said that this Champion was "something else". Kuro Blitz mentioned that this might be Kahili who was a former Island Challenge Champion, again that fits what the hiker said. Also regarding Galar's Gyms, there are already more than 8 Gyms there, since there are also version exclusive Gyms and Gym leaders too. Alister is a Shield-exclusive Leader and he's one of my personal favorites from Galar.
It depends on the generation, but for the most part it’s eight. Galar seems to be the only exception as far as I’m aware. The BW games as well, as there’s three gyms that are in B2W2 that aren’t in BW.

It's never been confirmed. A model of a gym-like building was discovered in the game, but nothing has been confirmed.

A few changes id wish theyd impliment with pokeballs are. Type specific balls obviously they have a few with the net ball. I know weve had the ability to customize ball animations when we throw out the pokemon but what if you could just change the color like a green ball. And one final idea is the balls change to reflect the pokemon inside. Like its cool to catch a groudon in a pokeball to make them match but what if you caught it with an ultra ball and the ultra ball was red with the yellow turing black. Or even cooler the mark of groudon appears on the top just my thoughts cuz i like to "match" the pokemon to the pokeball

What if the Backpacker is from Galar or Paldea? He could be traveling the world and happened to stop in Alola at some point. He's not from Kanto/ Johto because Lance is the current Champion there, not from Hoenn because Steven or Wallace are champion (Universe dependent), Not Sinnoh because Cynthia is Champion, not Unova because Iris is the champion & he's not explicitly from Alola because there IS no league System there. So, he has to be a traveler from either Paldea, where Geeta & Nemona reside or Galar, where Leon resides. The guy just happened to get a Souvenir in Alola and gives it to the player. The only Regions WITH Champions are Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Galar & Paldea at the time you meet the backpacker.

I believe it's like Galar there is the regular 8 gyms a trainer can go to but there are other gyms you can battle but those gyms are much weaker then thr main 8 so why we don't hear about them.
I think that there was a Champion in Alola during X/Y, just that this Champion wasn't an official Champion from an actual League. This also goes perfectly with that the hiker said that this Champion was "something else". Kuro Blitz mentioned that this might be Kahili who was a former Island Challenge Champion, again that fits what the hiker said. Also regarding Galar's Gyms, there are already more than 8 Gyms there, since there are also version exclusive Gyms and Gym leaders too. Alister is a Shield-exclusive Leader and he's one of my personal favorites from Galar.

It depends on the generation, but for the most part it’s eight. Galar seems to be the only exception as far as I’m aware. The BW games as well, as there’s three gyms that are in B2W2 that aren’t in BW.
