I'm a Balinese, my late grandmother used to tell bedtime story about how long ago Bali and Java is not separated by sea, how the people interact and migrate to another places because of social conflict and many other reasons. It's a story told generation by generation. Interesting how fairy tale story connect with science.

As a Filipino Zoologist I would add that there are 5 major Islands in the Philippines during this time, Greater Luzon which comprises of Luzon and surrounding islands like Masbate and Catanduanes, Greater Mindoro, which is just a bigger Mindoro, Greater Panay, which comprises of Negros, Cebu and Panay Islands, Greater Mindanao which includes Mindanao, Leyte, Samar and Bohol, and Greater Sulu, which is made up of the entire islands in the Sulu Archipelago... The San Bernardino Straight was just deep enough to separate Luzon and Mindanao which is why you can only find Tarsier in Mindanao, Bohol, Leyte and Samar, and the seas surrounding Mindoro too was deep enough to separate it, that's why you can only find the Tamaraw there, so do the Sulu, that's why you can only find Loris there and not in Mindanao which is just a few km away... Palawan is as said, connected to the rest of Sundaland which is why you can find families there that you can find in the rest of the Asia but not on the rest of the Philippines like the Pangolins... I'm Malaysian Malay with some Melanesian and Papuan ancestry. Recently got my mtDNA haplogroup. It's N21 which is apparently one of the most ancient haplogroup in Southeast Asia. A study shows that I'm descended from the first human settlers in Southeast Asian Islands a.k.a Sundaland. N21 is most common among Aboriginal Malays of Peninsular Malaysia.

I was pretty confused with my DNA admixture results and while running them across multiple databases confirmed the admixtures more or less, they haven't clarified my confusion as I can't relate the results to the oral history of my lineage. This video explains it quite a bit together with a journal article examining the genetic makeup of the South East Asian Malays.
I have realized these migrations too, when I was looking into haplogroup distributions in different regions and philogenetic ancient human studies. I also thought P have migrated over east asia, because P1 are mostly modern altai, tuva turkic and nivkh people in northeast asia. I think nearly all agglutinative languages have connection with sundaland as they all are related to C1b, K2b ancestors (also we can add D). Those people are polynesian, australian, melanesian, austronesian, austroasiatic, tibeto-burman, thai-kadai, sinitic, koreanic-japonic, mongolic-tungusic, dene-yeniseian, native american, hunnic-altaic, turkic-ugric and other languages. If it may be assumed Java Man and Floresiensis originally traveled from Africa it suggests the migration may have occurred at least two million years ago based on African Erectus fossil dates. I'm betting you're already aware of the fossil dating, so please disregard if my feedback is obvious.

I have no doubt the earliest modern human DNA in Sundaland dates to 60-70 kya, but my question is asking about pre-human migration to Java and Flores. For example, Java Man dates to at least 700,000 years old and is not a modern human. Homo floresiensis dates to roughly 100,000 years old, and is also not a modern human. This means a much earlier African migration occurred over 1 million years ago likely involving Homo erectus, and so my question concerns whether these pre-humans crossed water to access Java and Flores, or if 1-2 million years ago these islands were part of the mainland. The reason why this question has importance is because if Java Man and Floresiensis crossed water it suggests they were capable of ocean navigation, at least to some degree. But my initial guess is the entire Indonesian archipelago was a peninsula connected to the mainland 1-2 million years ago. Hopefully GeoNomad will make a video on this migration because these were likely the first pre-humans in Asia.

Possibly. But why search on the area submerged by water? their existence can be found by cave paintings, Paleolithic tools in various places in Indonesia. Check out Maros cave in South Sulawesi. The painting in this cave is believed to be created by these early settlers.

I was educated in an environment that held to the Six Days Creation story. I have always been fascinated with Geography and, therefor, the differences between the human and animal inhabitants of different climates and ecosysyems. It never made any logical sense to me that all these differences could have come about in about 6000 years. One approach of those who teach this illogical and disproven idea was to stress that God had put the different races on different continents to prevent race mixing. The great thing about science and education is that it relieves a person of the burden of outmoded and outdated ideas and proves those who cling to them are choosing to be willingly ignorant. As one sage has pointed out you can have your own beliefs but not your own facts. Of course, a well put together video such as yours could never be used as educational curriculum in Public Schools as it night violate some parents religious beliefs. This flies in the face of the public school's obligation to teach what is the facts and to prepare students to be capable, u functioning and discerning adults. It is this same goal that instructs pupils to use proper grammar no matter how they speak at home, to accept that some aspects of math are always going to mean 2 plus 2 equals 4, that many concepts in science are "just theories," but theories the way ideas are formulated. It is genuinely too bad that so many people are threatened by new discoveries and by different faiths. As it is said It was a brave person who ate the first oyster.
I had a similar experience with evolution ruining prevalent belief system. Except that it wasn't religion strictly speaking, but more a humanist ideology taken as a fact. It was an awkward moment to discover that people around me believe in evolution, though implicitly believe that our brain was exempt from evolution in at least last 100k years. Learning brutal fact that there evolution did not magically stop, if anything brain was under strong evolutionary pressure after our ancestors migrated in to new environments or tried luck with farming... it meant that we're observing right now results of diverging evolution and some social differences are genetic in nature, while people don't dare to say so, as they would cause outrage.

It was a very educational experience for me. Also, I think it would be great if you could make other videos of modern human migration to Indonesia since there's 4 migrations of it. First was the ancestors of Australian Aborigines, Papuan/ Melanesian and the "Negritos" that you explained in this video. Second was the Austroasiatic speaking people from Southern China to Mainland Southeast Asia (via Vietnam) to Indonesia. Third was the Austronesian speaking people from Taiwan to the Philippines and then Indonesia. Finally, the Indian, Arabs, Chinese, and European during the ancient maritime trade route and colonialism.

As a Filipino Zoologist I would add that there are 5 major Islands in the Philippines during this time, Greater Luzon which comprises of Luzon and surrounding islands like Masbate and Catanduanes, Greater Mindoro, which is just a bigger Mindoro, Greater Panay, which comprises of Negros, Cebu and Panay Islands, Greater Mindanao which includes Mindanao, Leyte, Samar and Bohol, and Greater Sulu, which is made up of the entire islands in the Sulu Archipelago... The San Bernardino Straight was just deep enough to separate Luzon and Mindanao which is why you can only find Tarsier in Mindanao, Bohol, Leyte and Samar, and the seas surrounding Mindoro too was deep enough to separate it, that's why you can only find the Tamaraw there, so do the Sulu, that's why you can only find Loris there and not in Mindanao which is just a few km away... Palawan is as said, connected to the rest of Sundaland which is why you can find families there that you can find in the rest of the Asia but not on the rest of the Philippines like the Pangolins... I'm Malaysian Malay with some Melanesian and Papuan ancestry. Recently got my mtDNA haplogroup. It's N21 which is apparently one of the most ancient haplogroup in Southeast Asia. A study shows that I'm descended from the first human settlers in Southeast Asian Islands a.k.a Sundaland. N21 is most common among Aboriginal Malays of Peninsular Malaysia.

Your video is one of the clearest explanation of Sundaland migrations I've come across to date. Thank you for your hard work. I was pretty confused with my DNA admixture results and while running them across multiple databases confirmed the admixtures more or less, they haven't clarified my confusion as I can't relate the results to the oral history of my lineage. This video explains it quite a bit together with a journal article examining the genetic makeup of the South East Asian Malays.

I have realized these migrations too, when I was looking into haplogroup distributions in different regions and philogenetic ancient human studies. I also thought P have migrated over east asia, because P1 are mostly modern altai, tuva turkic and nivkh people in northeast asia.
I think nearly all agglutinative languages have connection with sundaland as they all are related to C1b, K2b ancestors (also we can add D). Those people are polynesian, australian, melanesian, austronesian, austroasiatic, tibeto-burman, thai-kadai, sinitic, koreanic-japonic, mongolic-tungusic, dene-yeniseian, native american, hunnic-altaic, turkic-ugric and other languages.
I have tried to classify those people according to general haplogroup and general language as matching:

If it may be assumed Java Man and Floresiensis originally traveled from Africa it suggests the migration may have occurred at least two million years ago based on African Erectus fossil dates. I'm betting you're already aware of the fossil dating, so please disregard if my feedback is obvious.

I have no doubt the earliest modern human DNA in Sundaland dates to 60-70 kya, but my question is asking about pre-human migration to Java and Flores. For example, Java Man dates to at least 700,000 years old and is not a modern human. Homo floresiensis dates to roughly 100,000 years old, and is also not a modern human. This means a much earlier African migration occurred over 1 million years ago likely involving Homo erectus, and so my question concerns whether these pre-humans crossed water to access Java and Flores, or if 1-2 million years ago these islands were part of the mainland. The reason why this question has importance is because if Java Man and Floresiensis crossed water it suggests they were capable of ocean navigation, at least to some degree. But my initial guess is the entire Indonesian archipelago was a peninsula connected to the mainland 1-2 million years ago. Hopefully GeoNomad will make a video on this migration because these were likely the first pre-humans in Asia.

I was educated in an environment that held to the Six Days Creation story. I have always been fascinated with Geography and, therefor, the differences between the human and animal inhabitants of different climates and ecosysyems. It never made any logical sense to me that all these differences could have come about in about 6000 years. One approach of those who teach this illogical and disproven idea was to stress that God had put the different races on different continents to prevent race mixing. The great thing about science and education is that it relieves a person of the burden of outmoded and outdated ideas and proves those who cling to them are choosing to be willingly ignorant. As one sage has pointed out you can have your own beliefs but not your own facts.
Of course, a well put together video such as yours could never be used as educational curriculum in Public Schools as it night violate some parents religious beliefs. This flies in the face of the public school's obligation to teach what is the facts and to prepare students to be capable, u functioning and discerning adults. It is this same goal that instructs pupils to use proper grammar no matter how they speak at home, to accept that some aspects of math are always going to mean 2 plus 2 equals 4, that many concepts in science are "just theories," but theories the way ideas are formulated.
It is genuinely too bad that so many people are threatened by new discoveries and by different faiths. As it is said It was a brave person who ate the first oyster.
I had a similar experience with evolution ruining prevalent belief system. Except that it wasn't religion strictly speaking, but more a humanist ideology taken as a fact.
It was an awkward moment to discover that people around me believe in evolution, though implicitly believe that our brain was exempt from evolution in at least last 100k years. Learning brutal fact that there evolution did not magically stop, if anything brain was under strong evolutionary pressure after our ancestors migrated in to new environments or tried luck with farming... it meant that we're observing right now results of diverging evolution and some social differences are genetic in nature, while people don't dare to say so, as they would cause outrage.

I was raised to accept the bible as truth and for decades never questioned such stories as the Ark until learning archeology, anthropology, genetics, and how various species were located across continents. Finally solving the riddle was a huge breakthrough in my understanding which put an end to the notion of human exceptionalism. I compliment that you too made this journey albeit likely quicker than myself, but so glad to join you and others on this amazing path to revelation!
I still think there were hominids in Oceania (east of the Wallis line) before the northerners got there. They've only just begun digging up archaic fossils in Indonesia.
