NEW YEAR'S DAY classic cars outing at the Black Swan pub in Rixton

  • Several classic car meets were held around here on New Year's Day 2024, we though headed over to new territory for us and attended the "Brass Monkeys" classic cars gathering held at the Black Swan pub in Rixton, between Warrington and Manchester.
The fine weather led to an interesting variety of vehicles turning up, most of which were new to us. The fabulous Foden lorry that we'd seen just a week earlier at the Jolly Thresher made an appearance, as did the Austin 16 and Chevrolet Corvair. New-to-us sightings included a very tidy Hillman Hunter, various Minis, a rare Hillman Husky, the immaculate Daimler SP250 shown in this video's thumbnail, a grey and very original Austin A40 Somerset, a squadron of scooters of varying ages, VW Beetle 1303S, several Volvos from the 1980s and others that we'd not encountered before.
I've also included a clip of a rapidly fading old-school SAAB 900i that is something of a landmark in its locality, it looks like the years are catching up with it so for how much longer it'll be on the road I don't know. A lucky sighting of a pre-war Riley saloon also makes it in.

The evocative sound of those 2 stroke Lambrettas and Vespas took me right back to 1970 when I ventured on to the road for the first time at 17 on my F registered Lambretta J125 Starstream. My father had passed away unexpectedly a month earlier and that Lambretta helped slightly to get me through a very difficult time in my life.

You were luck with the weather and worth the early morning rise for you all. Like you, the 16 was my favourite and I can slip back to smell the leather and pleasure of the black one father ran as a taxi long before I was allowed to drive it.
Thanks again for trip down memory lane!

Very good. Loved the tractor made by MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG MAN Truck & Bus AG. Our friends in Bavaria have an old Fendt as they have a smallholding. Fendt belong to AGCO corporation nowadays. Nothing stays the same but it is very nice to look back and imagine, sometimes.

Our neighbour in Montreal Quebec had a new 68-69 Vauxhall Viva. I remember it was the first time we'd seen one in Canada. It had the smallest engine in a car I had ever seen. Within 4 years it had fallen apart, not doing well with Canadian winters and very rusted, my dad referred to it as a disposable car at the time

I don't know what the chances are of this happening but I just watched 'IDAC '(Steph) at Brooklands on New Year's day. What should I see just into the video? A V8 Ford Pilot in the same colour as yours and with white wall tyres Rick! It was good to see the Austin 16 again with more information on it. I do like the Daimler Dart and with the roof! It seems the 'Mods' won the day over the 'Rockers' but there were no fights thankfully! I do like some old British motorbikes. The old scooters are on the rise again after a bit of a decline, there are a good number around where I live. Thanks for turning out early for us Rick that was a good selection on the day. 👍👍

Another great day out!!!! I had a 340 Volvo in the 80s and always thought the whole Volvo range at the time were great cars, the 760 was a real load shifter!!!!
The Austin 16 is areal beauty !!!!
Strange for me now to see so many cars that I recall being the latest thing in automotive technology now being classed as classics.
Thanks again for all your hard work it is appreciated.

The yellow colour on the midget was a 1977 option listed as Chartreuse - my stepmother went to a lot of trouble clarifying thisd on her order for a new MGB roadster back then. Often a Chartreuse colour would be a shade more green than yellow - as available on the 1975 model year - and she definately, absolutely, wanted a yellow MGB. All went to plan, and it arrived looking yellow enough.
Always enjoy your videos and Harleys too,
    Many thanks!
    Simon.

Seeing the scooters reminded me of my mod days in the late 60s. Vespas were for show but Lambrettas were for go. There was a wide range of tuning accesories available particularly from Anacilotti who made expansion chamber exhausts and a very comfortable racing seat. In Newcastle there was a bike shop called The Dean where you could get the barrel bored out from 200cc to 225cc. Add on an Amal Concentric carb and the result was a scooter cabable of 80mph plus - but NOT when overtaking a police motorcycle! Up in Newcastle and the coast mods and rockers got on really well and my scooter was mended by some very tough looking rockers outside a coastal pub. They said scooters had two wheels and they didn't like all the fighting on the south coast as it gave everybody a bad name. The scooter was fixed and warm handshakes all round sent me on my way only to overtake that police bike at 70mph. Luckily it was ridden by a fellow mod who pulled me over just so he could admire my scooter and put in a cheeky bid to buy it!

Hello Richard . An eclectic taste indeed . The Daimler SP used the Triumph TR3 chassis albeit in modified form so the flexability issues are understandable . A friend of mine has a Corvair drop head. Thanks Richard.

Nice to see that super Pilot, ooops Austin 16, again! And as you say, that A40 Somerset is a real 'bobby dazzler'. I recall regularly seeing a Daimler Dart convertible passing by the petrol pumps I worked at in my summer hols and thinking how stylish it was. As for Saabs, we used to pass a Saab dealership in North Cornwall in the 1980's on the way to our holiday, displaying a fine selection of the model range which I always coveted. Sadly the dealership's site is now a ghastly, modern housing estate and of course Saab is no longer.

If Daimler had only produced an SP450 with the larger engine from the Majestic Major it would have been a true ancestor of the AC Cobra and one of the fastest sports cars of its time. The SP250 and its development prototypes were killed off because they could have outshone Jaguar's sports cars. As with the Rover/Alvis mid engine sports car BMC/BL showed a stunning lack of ambition in the performance car sector by not producing these marvels.

Even the 4.5 shoe-horned into the Jaguar Mk2 shell would have made for quite a drive

The Dart certainly is distinctive. Not many fish faced cars. It's like Daimler management gave the designers a grille and bumper they found in a back shed and said make it fit. The Daliesque Citroen Ami Super looks more rational than the Dart. (and a lot more attractive to my eye) Beauty in the eye of the beholder as they say. 🤩 I think grey modern cars are a marketing ploy, all a shade similar to the road surface, bound to crash eventually. And with your dark days and long nights there they are hazardous. Almost 30% of new cars here in Australia are either grey or silver. Drivers seem to like being stealthy. 👍
