The JOLLY THRESHER CAR & STEAM meeting, Boxing Day 2023

  • The "Tom Barlow" steam & classic cars meet at the Jolly Thresher pub in Lymm on Boxing Day 2023 is today's video. This is an event we'd been to some years previously - 2009 was the year of our last visit - note the very young Youthful Assistant shown briefly! After so many years it was due a return trip, so with Christmas Day behind us we headed along the M6 to re-acquaint ourselves with this informal meeting.
Steam vehicles are the key reason for the Jolly Thresher / Tom Barlow meet, and are joined every year by all manner of old cars, vans, tractors, lorries and motorcycles, making for a very enjoyable few hours. Everything gathers at the Jolly Thresher, then a short run down the road takes places to the next pub, The Wheatsheaf, where the vehicles congregate once more. For some entrants that's it, whereas others then set off down the road for a couple of miles down to the Ye Olde No.3, another well-established watering hole in the area.
It was great to see the steam rollers and traction engines that turned up, my favourite of the steamers though was the wonderful Sentinel steam wagon shown in the thumbnail. It's always a treat to see such vehicles at vintage events, but even better to see them driving along on the road.
Cars present at the Jolly Thresher in Lymm this year included a couple of Jeeps, a superb Austin 16 alongside an equally smart Chevrolet Corvair, Moggy Minor and others, plus "fly bys" from a Gilbern (several times) and an immaculate Jensen Interceptor. Various motorcyclists turned up on their venerable machines, as did a groovy Dodge van and a fine pair of trucks. Tractors were also very well represented.
We'll definitely make the effort to re-visit the Jolly Thresher/Tom Barlow car & steam meeting next year on Boxing Day, if I get myself organised enough perhaps we'll drive over in something appropriate.

Thanks so much for an entertaining video, Rick. Although the drivers in the area didn't seem too impressed by the steamers and tractors, I admire the willingness of the vintage owners to bring out their iron on a less than perfect day. Happiness is a warm steam engine!

A first rate meeting and very interesting video RJ. Pity about the weather and some impatient, selfish and moronic drivers the number of which are increasing on a daily basis.

Very many thanks for sharing this Rick. The Sentinel steam lorry BRF 200 belonged to The Cambridge Gas Works in the 1950s & I can remember as a small child seeing it regularly ply loaded with coal from the rail sidings then on Coldhams Road in Cambridge to the gas works on Newmarket road where a Tesco supermarket now stands. a great channel thank You.

The passengers on the Lymm Salt trailer towed by the traction engine would have enjoyed a good few pints and wouldn't have minded getting wet! Great video as always but it made me sad that here in Gateshead and Newcastle there's no such events taking place. My wife's grandfather was a proud Norfolk man who ran and looked after all the ploughing traction engines and those used to power the giant threshers so she loves the sight and smells of steam powered vehicles. I prefer old tractors which remind me of driving a few when I used to work in my area erecting fences and buiding outdoor and indoor horse arenas. Happy New Year to you and Harley and keep those great videos coming!

I love the old steamers, I was getting a bit of the Fred Dibnah's with the traction engine. The Sentinel S6 was very well restored. I don't mind seeing some in their original state but as you say some have to be restored to make them function. I love the Austin 16 and yes it is very similar to the Ford Pilot. I hope you made a note of those lovely wing mirrors, those are exactly the ones I had in mind for your car. A very good selection for a Boxing Day turn out. A Happy New Year to you Rick, Mrs. OCC and not forgetting Harley, very young and a bit older! 👍👍

Thanks for the Jolly Thresher, I loved it because it brought back childhood memories and because I love old commercials and steam vehicles as well as cars.
Because I usually watch You Tube on TV I find it difficult to comment so I have saved up a few.
A while ago you showed an E Type Jag with an A & B Motors sticker in the back window. We lived almost opposite the A & B, before we moved to the pub in Lymm, the Star in Statham not the Jolly Thresher. My Dad was very friendly with the A & B and may have had some interest in it (financially or otherwise). He played for Everton and when he stopped playing and became a coach we loved to the pub in Lymm for 3 years before moving to Crosby, Liverpool.
My Dad was very into cars, he used to swap his cup final tickets every year for a 'new' second hand car from a garage in Bromborough on the Wirral. We ended up with some quaint things - a Triumph Roadster, which my mother immediately made him change for something more practical. A limo of some sort that had belonged to some duke - the took kit was velvet lined. That had to go quick as well. Both were too thirsty.
Later I married a 'tin smith, copper smith' a member of the London Guild of Tin Smiths/Copper Smiths. After his apprenticeship he worked for Vauxhall, we were in Luton at this time as my dad transferred to Luton Town. At Vaux. my husband Roy built new cars from the blueprint, 3 one to speed test in Tunisia. one to rough track test until it disintegrated and one to drive into a concrete block at 30mph.
He also, later did some work for Harvey Smith for Aston Martin.
We were headhunted by the State of Queensland in Australia, offered a new house to rent with the option to buy, which we did and which I still live in 52 years later.
While I cannot see to drive I have been, while in the UK, technical officer for Toddington and District Motorcycle Club and worked in Second Hand car finance where at only 18 I was given a financial allocation to buy cars. I had to do things like checking chassis numbers against engine numbers, if you had an Austrin motor in a Riley body I would send out a rep to look for the weld marks where two cars had been joined!
I haven't had so much to do with cars, bikes etc here as my husband was bitten by a 'King Brown' what they now call an Eastern Brown Snake, like the one they found at the tennis recently. King Browns can strike more than once, my husband cut one in half while helping a friend harvest sugar cane. Although they stabilized him he died 2 years later of sepsis. The result of the bite.
Enough from me - have a wonderful New Year and keep up the wonderful You Tube channel that I love so much, that keeps me in touch with my childhood and the cars etc I love.

Terrific video to end 2023! Star of the show was definitely the super Austin 16, although I'm not too sure about the whitewall tyres. At an initial glance I thought it was the OCC Pilot! I really enjoyed seeing the traction engines, steam rollers and lorries. Solid engineering, made to last and will still be a pleasure long after Teslas and that ilk are long forgotten.

I did my best! It's a Corvair, yes the earlier version did come in for some criticism from the likes of Ralph Nader but these second gen cars were improved I believe. I would have featured the Jensen more but it only drove by twice so I was lucky to get any footage of it. Thanks for watching.
