  • What is the Meniscus? Your Knee's Cushion and Stabilizer!
The knee's menisci are two fibrocartilaginous pads that serve to distribute friction within the knee joint, situated between the thigh (femur) and lower leg (tibia). They have a concave shape on top and a flat underside, connecting with the tibia. These structures anchor to small depressions (fossae) amid the tibia's condyles, but toward the center, they taper into a thin shelf without attachment. Blood flow within the meniscus flows from the outer edges toward the center. With aging, blood flow diminishes, and the central portion becomes avascular in adulthood, impeding healing processes.
Types: Each knee has two menisci - the medial meniscus (inside of the knee) and the lateral meniscus (outside of the knee).
    Common Meniscus Issues:
Tears: These can occur due to sudden twists or turns, especially in sports. They can also result from degeneration as we age.
Symptoms: Pain, swelling, stiffness, difficulty straightening the knee, a popping sensation during injury, and a feeling of the knee giving way.
