  • Ever seen an auto rickshaw / tuk tuk in person? Chances if you've only ever been to the USA or Europe. you never have! However, much of the world uses these little three wheeled autos for everyday life. Some countries use them as taxis while others even use them for more practical reasons such as a hurst for a funeral! These little auto rickshaws / tuk tuks are incredibly hard to find in the USA, but we managed to snag one in Atlanta just recently! We can't wait to turn this little tuk tuk into another business venture, but for now we're having fun exploring and traveling around town in her. Today, we'd like to introduce you to our 2018 TVS King Auto Rickshaw (tuk tuk): Marigold!

The secret of smooth transition from Neutral to First gear is that when you put it on 1st gear, rev the accelerator gently then also gently (slowly) release the clutch until it goes on the biting point, where the vehicle will move slowly. Then when you feel that the acceleration is stable, release the clutch. Rev much and quick release of the clutch will result a damage to the vehicle.

*** CLUTCH TIP *** Without giving it any gas, just slowly let the clutch out until it starts to move and then pull in the clutch again. This is called finding the friction point. Practice doing that a few times so that you get used to where it starts to move. Then, you can practice letting out the clutch so slowly and evenly that you'll be able to start moving at idle without giving it any gas. Once you can do that predictably, then practice letting the clutch out slowly while giving it some gas. Eventually, you'll be able to take off smoothly and quickly with no jerkiness. It's a balancing act that needs practice but you'll get it. LONG RUN, let the clutch out as fast as you can while accelerating but still taking off smoothly. This will help you not burn up the clutch too soon. Good luck!

So happy to see a TVS Auto running in the USA. Also very glad that it is withstanding all those clutch release tortures 😂😂. When you slowly (sllllooooowlyyyy) release a clutch you’ll hear a slight change in engine sound., that’s when you slightly give throttle. You’ll find the auto start to move like a flower blossoming. 😂😂

    Hi Chris and Sara,
Just a little starting tip on the TVS Autorickshaw,
    1. After pressing the clutch and shifting it to 1st gear, release the clutch slowly and gently simultaneously increasing the throttle gradually but not too much throttle on the 1st gear(25-30%)
    2. Shift to 2nd gear, this time release the gear smoothly and increase the throttle (approx 30-40%)
    3. Shift to 3rd and also increasing throttle.
Hope my explanation helps 🙏🏽. Enjoy you piece from heaven 🛺

Don't just drop the clutch, you're damaging either it and/or the gearbox this way. Try to slowly release it until you feel it grabbing, then add a little throttle and release it slightly more, gently. Once you are moving you can release it fully (yet smoothly). It'll take a little practice but will become second nature quickly once you get it. I suspect reverse gear is on the other side of neutral than 1st gear, but that should be easy to google. Good luck and enjoy your funky little rickshaw.

You are supposed to release the hand clutch slowly and increase the accelerator in harmony with releasing the clutch. e.g: release 1/4th clutch, accelerate a little, release 1/2 clutch, accelerate some more; release 3/4th clutch, accelerate some more; now the auto will start moving and you can take over; Also the sound of the engine also tells you the how much you have to accelerate; loud means too much. best part of Rickshaw that it take less place n you can carry 3 people plus you are not locked up in vehicle i mean you get connected to fresh air instead feel uncomfortable in CAB and you can easily get in and get out compare to closed vehicles.
these Electric Rickshaw is best alternative option specially in vacation spot.

He gave me the verbal instructions first on school play ground. when I let the clutch go all the way out very quickly on first gear, it made it jump and stall, he smacked me on my head and said that I need to have co-ordination of releasing clutch and acceleration. Initially it seemed so difficult but after the first hour I drove the Bajaj home like a pro. My mother was so happy watching me riding it for first time. Pretty much all the Indian who grew up in India during 80s and 90 know how to drive manual transmission scooter, and bike . It is fun to drive it with top down , and just be careful while turning especially three wheeler .

On normal flat roads: Slowly release the clutch on gear 1, with slight throttle.
On the up slope: more throttle and slowly release the clutch on gear 1.
Never release the clutch so fast, else it will wear off faster.

You guys need to get some of us older folks to help you. :) You're "popping the clutch." As others have already said, you have to SLOWLY release the clutch as you give it gas. Think of a see saw - If you jump off the low end, the person on the high end will come crashing down. If you wait until you're both level and slowly get off the other person won't fall hard. • @janhanchenmichelsen2627

Here is a training tip, both for (most) bikes and for (most) cars: On flat ground with no traffic: Try to release the clutch very slowly from idle (no throttle), just to get some muscle memory for where and how the clutch bites. The acceleration will move your body a bit backwards, this can cause sudden, very hard clutch operation. Followed by stalling or jumping. So your clutch hand (or leg) must not "follow", but operate in a relaxed way, almost decoupled from the rest of your body. After some training on idle, apply power and get the vehicle moving smoothy. Without cooking the poor clutch. It is REALLY not very difficult, just basic training. I taught both my sons to drive after starting this way. And this was the method I was told when I first rode a bike and drove a car, when around 12-13 years old.

Hey chris one key suggestion is never feel stressed wile driving manual cause it may freeze you ,and feel the power of it ,honestly i drove many auto and manual ones but the fun part is manually changing the gears and driving it is the real fun as you completely own a vehicle instead of relying on some actuators.Slowly give raise on acceleration and release the clutch so you wont feel the jerk while engaging the clutch after some days you will get a smooth start and never raise it too much and engage the clutch it might damage your clutch .

    Hey Chris and Sara
Congratulations for the Rickshaw / TuckTuck
You guys are doing great as far as operating the vehicle,
The gear shift is liner, i.e it will go in sequence,
    Neutral for ignition and self
1st gear to start moving (Please leave the Clutch - the break like liver a bit slowly when you shift gear form Neutral to First gear and so on. Plz don't leave the clutch liver immediately when you shift gear, that the only thing you guys are doing it wrong.)
2nd/3rd/4th all gears shift with clutch pressed and then slowly leave it once you go a comfortable momentum.
Slowly you will get used to it, I am sure its a 6 months old video so you guys must have already championed the above steps. Still I felt like sharing.
Enjoy your small little cute ride .. its very dynamic and useful little vehicle.
