Gai Jatra, (gāi means cow and jātrā means festival in Nepali: गाई जात्रा, and Nepal Bhasa: सा पारु) is a festival celebrated in Nepal, mainly in Kathmandu valley by the Newar community.[1] The festival is generally celebrated in the month of Bhadra (August-September). The date is set according to the lunar Nepa and falls on the first day of the dark fortnight of the month of Gunla.

Gai Jatra was started by King Pratap Malla during his reign in 1641 to 1671 AD. His teenage son Chakravartendra Malla had died untimely. Queen mother was sad for her loss. King Pratap Malla started this tradition to both help ascend his son to next life and also to cheer the grieving Queen and families of those whose loved ones had passed away.
The Gai Jatra , Gai (Cow) is sacred like a Lakshmi & viewed as mother. The children of those whose loved ones in family also had passed away comes out to Hanuman Dhoka Palace the Newar priest performs the prayers for passes ones and the children usually wears long skirts and must have the tulle belt around their waist with ends hanging on both right & left sides that drags on the ground while walking. The drag is necessary for it touches the ground (Earth) for the loved ones who passed away to ascend from earth to Heaven. This is a festival of dragging clothes while walking. The children also wear head dress that symbolizes cow drawn on it which is important, and they wear moustache drawn on their faces. The Jatyra is supposed to be religious for Newar community to help pass the past ones from earth to heaven & also to cheer those who are left behind. so the parade of drag is done in morning by children & in evening with caricature and stand up comedy for by hanuman Dhoka Dabali for grieving Queen and others.
