Is torque steer only related to higher performance cars? a friend of mine drives a toyota aygo (1000cc i presume) and thinks he has experienced something similar to which i said i doubt its that but im not sure, could it be?

Centrifugal forces, balancing the weight of the car. consider if the engine was off center, each front tire would have a different load weight, not only affecting handling and steering, but also the tire bearing more load will have more driving force due to friction increasing with weight... making torque steer. Adding gears to relocate the transmission output to the center to make the drive Shrafts equal length will add gear resistance, as well as gear lag, where the gears will take some time to move under load as there is a brief period of deformation in the teeth. This will degrade the responsiveness of the car. The additional mechanical components will also make the car less efficient and more complex.
