I wish the South Eastern Freeway/Monash Freeway M1 was as free of traffic today as it was then , also he had no TOLLS to pay.
Thanks for the trip down good memory lane.

+Space Cadet Yes, there is a lot of work to do when driving these cars - no power steering either.

NFSA Films remember when in chromakey car shoots, when the car is in a studio, the actors used to move their hands back and forth on the steering wheel to "simulate" driving, it was kind of accurate, but when you watch old movies it just looks weird

+Space Cadet . My bro was recently doing up an old HQ, and he let me behind the wheel.. after years of driving modern cars, it was a terrifying experience. God knows how I survived my P's driving one of those things.

jq747 haha we used to "sail" them. they would wander back and forth. you get used to the rythm. rack and pinion. lots of free-play in the middle. and those tiny thin steering wheels. way to make it hard!!

If you consider the footage at 8:50 as it was filmed (and not the finished product where it's been edited to stretch the timeline out), this seems to be a case of classic bad driving and poor lane selection. The driver here begins an overtaking manoeuvre about 500 metres before the exit and finishes it about 100 metres after the deceleration lane begins. They then cut across to the exit immediately after that, over a solid white line. They could have waited an extra 1 or 2 seconds and stayed behind the slow car rather than do a high-risk overtake! That's one thing this film doesn't teach - patience is a virtue.

Man.. if I saw this video when I was learning to drive, I'd probably buy a bicycle!

I remember videos and driver ed classes like this.
It did make me wonder how anyone was able to drive, it looked way too hard.

Nice bit of East Melbourne right at the end there (Gipps St & Simpson St), and what may be Victoria Rd in Northcote for that long stretch of driving, going over the train line at Dennis Station and turning into Mitchell St.
