    Retired heavy duty mechanic here.
    Gawd, this brought back memories. Have not done any Detroit work in years.
    Used to do the occasional inframe on logging machines, mostly 12V71 and 8V71. Anything small enough that it had a 6 we would just do a swap.
    I was busting my gut laughing when you were stuck under the bus.
    Have been there and done that.
    I was in a really tight spot one time, got stuck. Told my buddy I was stuck as I was trying to wiggle my way out.
    DON'T PANIC he yells, IT MAKES YOU SWELL UP
    Well, I just lost it, could not stop laughing. Had a cable tie trying to stick itself into one of my ears, pretty much done.
    Will never forget that day.
    Don't panic, you swell LOL

    Love seeing the dogs. I grew up with a St. Bernard, and remember how they are so much fun. As a 60lb kid playing tug of war with a 120lb dog, I'd used to come in covered in green from being dragged around the lawn ;)

      That's funny Scott. When I was in highschool some little kid down the street used to get drug around the neighbourhood by a Bernard. One of the funniest things I ever saw.

    Great to see father and son working on the same project together, you'll probably pick up 40hp even before you add the bigger injectors after you rebuild it.

    very cool seeing the difference between an 6-71 and a 6v-71. Both have about the same power but much different packaging. I like how the blower mounts to the side like that. I very much want to find a blower in a junkyard to mount in my garage as wall art with those big twin screws. Very cool stuff!

    At the forklift company I worked for years ago, they used 1 ton Ford trucks (and the Super Duty when they came out in the early 90s) with a box on the back for service trucks. Was nice, you could back up to the loading docks of the customers and also have a nice stand-up shop to work in (unlike hunched over in a van). Well one of our guys lived in a HOA neighborhood, they hated that truck parked in their driveway. But it was his work vehicle, so they had to grudgingly accept it. HOA's are snobs, they don't even like window A/C units, clotheslines, etc. Enjoy your more recent videos, you have a nice piece of land out there to do what you want. Congrats on doing what you enjoy!

    I think the old rule was: "The better the mechanic, the worse his vehicle." That was usually because he put all his time & energy into making his customers' vehicles right. So you must be pretty good, lol! I know that you're not going the turbo route just yet, but I'll hate to see that blower come off for the last time when you do. And it's good to see father & son working together on something cool. One last thought: Detroit Diesel > HOA.

    • @ROTAXD
      @ROTAXD 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lateef Carrere turbo Detroits are also blown. The dd 2 strokes need the blowers simply to run (they’re not power adders). The turbos are the power adders. That’s right: A 2 stroke dd that’s turbo’d is also supercharged.

Working on everybody else's stuff... and yours looks like a Puerto Rico farm bus.. or shrimp boat engine.. lol.. I did however learn tricks pulling the liners with the pistons etc.. Interesting.. U got away with the HOA. as your bus is a Camper... or MH... Just always very interesting stuff with your diesel work... Damn Detroit's... 42 odd years dealing with them... Love the rescue Dog...

      detroits have that reputation due to the airbox drain tubes. even if there is no leakage from any gaskets, they always "leak" oil from the airbox drains because catch cans were never considered in the old days, nobody cared if oil dripped on the ground back then. properly set up with catch cans and a cast aluminum valve cover they can be made very leakproof. most of my detroit work has been in boats and yachts where the owners don't like oil leaks, so i got pretty good at eliminating most of them.

    Doing an in-frame in a boat is hard. The top of the engine is easy, the bottom can be very difficult depending how much room they gave you. We had a slant 671 rebuilt in our shop. We installed it in the boat while it was in the water. When we started it we got a lot of blue smoke! Turns out the put the oil rings in facing up instead of down! Easy to do with the piston sitting on a bench. The hardest thing I ever did on a 671 was reinstall the oil pump while the engine was still in a 36 foot boat. One of the quirks on our boats was the copper fuel line. We were crossing the Clyde on a LCM 5 when the port engine cranked up to 2,200 rpms and refused to shut down. I went down and found the copper fuel line had cracked. For those who don't know the fuel pump is on the aft end of the Roots blower. The crack was dumping fuel into the blower. FYI I ran 90 injectors in the LCM I took care of.

    Doesn't a turbo engine have different pistons? The only DD I really worked on after the Army was a non-turbo with turbo positions, IIRC. Just last week I did have to change a fuel pump on an 8-71 though, so that's two.
    When you pulled the blower, at first I was confused on why #3&4 weren't at the same height being paired cylinders. Then I realized my brain flatuance. It's a two stroke. Big duh, Tim.

      Just turbos have a lower compression piston

    • @marzsit9833
      @marzsit9833 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BusGreaseMonkey turboed detroits have 2-piece crosshead pistons and the intake ports in the liners are slightly higher up in the bore so the scavenging cycle lasts as long as possible. the cam profile is also different closing the exhaust valves sooner so the turbo can pressurize the cylinder before the piston covers the intake ports.

      Helps keep the dust down, I suppose that’s why more and more rural municipalities are paying to oil old dirt roads now that there are fewer and fewer Driptroits on the road.

    You can take an old liner to a good machinest and he can make a nice liner loader out of it. it's just as good as the factory liner loader. I had ones made for 53, 71, and 92 series engines. Worked great.

    • @bigjohn6475
      @bigjohn6475 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did the same thing. Load the pistons in the liner, then slide them both in together.
      I remove them both together as well. Brass punch across the piston like he did to pop it up a little, then finish baring the engine over till it reaches TCD on the crank, then lift them out.
      I have lifted many 871 heads off alone, but in a truck, not a bus. a red shop rag on each end run through the fuel line crossovers looped around and tied in a knot for handles. I have some "T" handles that I made, but I like the rags better because they are more comfortable. You'd think those tiny lines wouldn't hold the weight, but I never had any problems, nor any damage.
      I run a ball hone through the block a few times to clean the bores before installing the liners. As I'm sure you know, if you get a liner that slides in with too much resistance, the engine won't crank when it's hot.
      Before the red rtv, I used cat cement on the gaskets that weren't vellumoid. Those that were like the oil cooler gasket I use Permatex #2. I use a dab of yellow weatherstrip adhesive on the 4 corners of the quad ring under the head, and a dab under the water quad rings, to hold them in place.
      I liked studs on each end of the head as well, so the head is piloted onto the block, and it doesn't slide around while you are starting the head bolts, although sometimes you don't have the height clearance for studs.

    • @4321grp
      @4321grp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigjohn6475I made a couple short studs by sawing off bolts and sawing a screwdriver slot in them, those were handy when installing a head that didn't have much room above it.

    • @bigjohn6475
      @bigjohn6475 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4321grp Good idea. I have many of those that I've used for things like holding clutch pressure plates in place enough to start a few bolts, and on a few occasions piloting a manual transmission in.
      Another tool I made for Detroits...... I took an old wrist pin, ground it down so the end was rounded so I can use it to install the wrist pin caps. The tool sets them in concaved so they seal nice. I took a large suction cup, drilled a hole in the center, stuck a plastic vacuum line insert in the cup so I can attach my vacuum gauge, place it over the wrist pin and seal it against the piston, then pump it up and check to see if they hold vacuum to make sure they are sealed properly.

    What wording did they say applied to your vehicle to make a violation out of you parking there?
