    the real star of this video is the original owner..the meticulous nature and attention to detail is stunning, and one of the best any of us have ever noted..incredible workmanship is evident throught the bus...wow..

      Agreed. The couple that built this coach out to this conversion you see, were the finest folks I have known in many a year. I could feel their love and care in this coach, the 1st moment I saw it and met them. I am honored to have met them and to be able to care for it, as I know they would, if they still could. All credit goes to them.

    Wow, what a bus. In Canadian and northern manitoba snow storms that’s the only bus to take out. I loved those old gm’s.

    Immaculate Buffalo bus. Superb in every detail. These were attractive as coaches (Jersey Transit and several local lines used them here)and make an excellent conversion as is here. A timeless classic.

    I'm a car mechanic . We got a truck in just before Christmas a few years ago with a bolt together radiator and couldn't get it cleaned out by the radiator shop in time before they closed. I took the tanks off and cleaned out the tanks and brushed off the excess deposits. We realised we didn't have anything thin enough to clean out the tubes with. Then i had a bright idea . We flattened out an old transmission dipstick and radiused the end a bit more and used that. It worked. We got new gaskets and put it back together and it worked. No more overheating. It had blocked up at the ends more than the middle.

    I don't usually watch the bus tours. I'm more interested in the mechanical repair videos you do. But this one...This bus is amazing. The couple that built it should be very proud of their work. They deserve it.

    The person responsible for the mechanical craftsmanship and cosmetics is truly a perfectionist. It will be a challenge to maintain the same standard without the talent and knowledge. .

    By the way that is the nicest conversion inside and out that I have seen!
    And thanks to you I not only have two Onan generators in the barn one of which will be going into our 5th wheel soon , but more important found some terrific new friends in Dan and his family (Including Turbo). Super people!

    Can sure tell he's mighty proud of his Buffalo. For good reasons too, I can't say much except I'm perhaps a bit jealous. He's dang fortunate the former owner was so meticulous with upkeep, and boy does it show with this beauty! Thanks for the great details on the work your doing Scott, much appreciated here.     Wow, no expense was spared on that build and it was done perfectly, that is definitely something I would own! Glad the second owner takes as much care of it as the original owner, you can tell by the way he opened the cargo bay doors and made sure they made no contact together, HA!

    Love the rear triple taillights on these, a very sexy model of bus designed and built by GM. This is one bus I wouldn't mind having with a manual trans. simply gorgeous can't lust enough over buffalos

    That is a magnificent bus! You can tell how well it is maintained by how he treats it. For example, how he opened the second bay door around 9.10-9.30 in the video. Very meticulous man and it shows in the buses condition. I have seen a different style of mud flap on other buses, they look like bristles, perhaps he can use that style in the future.

    James River Bus and Abbott Bus Lines are the only two major bus companies that currently operate in Richmond, Va. Abbott is a very old company started around the early 30s. That’s the cleanest old Buffalo I’ve ever seen. Someone spent a king’s ransom on it.
    Most people would be better off buying premix coolant if they don’t at least have plenty of distilled water to mix concentrate with. I know some will say that only deionized water should be used but you can use distilled with no issues over the long haul.

    Wow, that bus is something else, I wasn't sure what I was expecting when the engine cover was first opened, but that engine bay really jumped out.

    Those seal/shaft sleeves are life savers. I put the part if possible in freezer and heat the sleeve then they slide on

    What a coach. I would have loved to have one. I did get a nice coach in the end. One thing I saw, that fan. Lots of the big old coach owners are going to plastic fans. lighter on the bearings and easier to pull in the future.

    Maybe you could use part of the removed mud flap as a seal on the top of the radiator to block the airflow. Beautiful bus.

    Hey Scott. I’m not trying to talk bad about U or anything that ur doing! Now with that said I’ve been doing this for many many years! & I’ve had seals leak like the one on the water pump on this ❤️BEAUTIFUL BUFFALO BUS❤️ & I’ve also used them thin wear rings & they do stop the leaking for a short time! So whenever I’m doing a part like that I just go ahead & order a NEW OEM PART so it will not have a chance of leaking again for a very long time! What happens is that the pressure of the seal pushes the thin repair ring back down into the old worn spot & it starts leaking again! When u replace it with a NEW UNWORN PART IT CANNOT DO THAT! Now sometimes whenever u press the seal or the part back together u can not press it all the way to where it was & get by with the seal resealing onto another part of the shaft & not leaking but MOST OF THE TIME u have to press things back Together all the way so it is a short time fix! Just explain it to ur customer hey it’s a few more $$$$ now to fix it rite but u won’t be back into fixing this particular problem again in they’re LIFETIME! Now for all u keyboard warriors out there yes certain parts o things come with a removable wear ring & yes u can remove & replace them & put new seals & they don’t leak! This is true!!! But take a look of the thickness of them types of wear rings compared to the aftermarket fixes! The aftermarket fixes are not much thicker than Aluminum Foil! U, & Kelly are doingba AWESOME Job out there Scott!!! Keep up all the GREAT WORK

    Hi Scott I can’t stress this enough when you run in to this problem you need to add a water filter to get the crap out of the system. There is all kinds of build up in the system and it’s every we’re in the cooling systems. You may have good numbers but it is full of fine crap you can’t see. If you put a coolant filter on the bus drive about 2000 Miles when you take the filter off it’ll be as heavy as a brick. it will be fall off from inside the radiator heater cores in the engine as you drive. It will take about three changes of the filter to get all of the stuff out of the engine. If you are were running long life coolant you can get coolant filters with no DCA in them. They will have a 0 on the side.

    Thermostats are not the problem. It's the coolant. Have the radiator professionally serviced and go with modern OAT pre mixed coolant.

    In Arizona where I grew up it was taught in basic shop class but as a rule any ware, NEVER,NEVER,NEVER use a garden hose to fill your radiator or battery. Distilled water only...Or you get what you see here. Plugged radiators and destroyed battery's. Sure its a pain in the ass to fill radiators with gallon jugs of distilled water but this is the alternative. If you use distilled water you can get a lifetime of use out of a radiator., without having to remove it and have it rodded out...Somewhere along the way we stopped teaching kids common sense stuff like this if at all, but .Thanks for the video's....Jack Baker

      Some parts of the county has very soft low minerals water, usually from deep wells, you just have to know if you really need distilled of not. In AZ...yea you bet.

      If you use a dehumidifier, that water is basically distilled....filter it and it’s good. The price is right too.....

    While it probably will not make a difference here, I do not agree with 170 thermostats to help resolve any cooling issue. Engine wear is lowest 180-190 degrees. 170 is too cold in my opinion. If cooling system is good, the temp should stay at thermostat temp. or slightly above. If there are cooling issues, 160/170/180 will make NO difference as it will exceed thermostat temp. There may be some DD specific cooling function that I do not understand. If it runs above thermostat temp, something is wrong. Just my opinion, I have seen people play with thermostats to no avail chasing the real issue. Clearly the radiator was restricted. Should be good now.

      Years ago we had a rash of Detroit's that were in fishing boats which were turning their lube oil into a black tar. Turns out they were running at ocean ambient temps, 20 C on average. Getting those units back into service was huge job because everythng had to be stripped out and cleaned . There is such a thing as running too cold and this was but one instance where I have seen engine damage from over cooling.

      David Davis- the 71 series detroit diesel is 1930's technology, the cooling systems are usually not pressurized and the cylinder heads tend to run hot so they really do run best with 160-180 thermostats. if the engine is really stressed, like an inline 6-71 (only 426 cubic inches, no turbo..)pushing a 9.5 ton 3751 silversides bus over a mountain pass, the colder thermostat helps prevent the cylinder head from cracking between the valve seats and the injector tube which is a common problem. it would be different if the design was reverse-cooled like most modern engines, but it isn't so you can't use modern engine theory when discussing it.

      I agree, the late model diesels that are running huge power and getting amazing fuel mileage and engine life are running 195F stats. The opening temp of the stats has little to do with the systems capacity to move heat. In fact the higher temp stats make the delta T air temp to water temp higher so it can transfer more heat. Not much more but more. Keeping the heads cool is about flow. The pump on my LT chevy is about the same size as the 6-71.

      Well, I thought there might be a difference between the DD and more modern engines. Seems like you need to take every step available to prevent overheating, especially if the cooling system is not operating at optimum. Cracked heads are obviously a serious issue.

      Sometimes its a myth to think that you can run a lower temp. thermostat to get the engine cooler, but there's a point where the water will flow too fast through the radiator and not have a full chance to cool off....thereby actually raising the temp. in the engine, or, even overheating

    Hi Scott, I am the first this time. A quick back story. I will never have the room to own a bus of my own, but I grew up in a small down in Washington State, which used Fageol Twin Coaches well into the 1970's. Some of the buses had been in service since 1946. They used a pair of inline 6 cylinder gas engines mounted pancake style under the coach. Both engines powered a single two speed transmission and transaxle.

      When I had my bus, I lived in a tower block of flats (apartments....I’m English).
      I went around all the local bus operators, and farms looking for a parking space.
      I got lucky at a bus company, and ended up paying £50 per month for secure parking.
      You just need a little imagination if you want to do it.....

    I love all the old buses and I love Detroit but when I was a kid on vacation I remember the first time I ever got really sick was when we got behind that old Greyhound bus and sometimes the exhaust fumes would make me sick but they don't anymore nice bus better than a motorhome

    Those deposits in the radiator are most likely due to using tap water instead of distilled water. The lime in the water clogs up the water passages and also causes corrosion. Since I have starting mixing distilled water with coolant, I have had zero corrosion and deposit issues.

    I figured it out! All the dirt that should be in the crevices and crannies of that bus but aren’t somehow ended up in the radiator.

      It was used for only around 32,000 miles per year in ideal conditions and well cared for & maintained by the private charter service.
      When retired, it had around 750,000 miles on it's chassis...
      Considered low mileage in the
      bus industry standards

    Do you test the Ph for the antifreeze? Also I would gather it’s got anti-cav in it? Water filters can be very useful to keeping a cooling system healthy!! Gorgeous rig! I’d be afraid to take it on the road!

    Looks like there is a trailer hitch on the back of the bus. Any chance you can get some more closeup images of that, especially how it's mounted to the bus?

    That is a beautiful bus, seeing that radiator makes me wish auto rads were like that. The number of times I've had one that could have been cleaned and reused vs replaced.
    Would a thermal camera show how bad a radiator is without having to pull it? or would all the cores block to much of your view? auto rads are 2 or 3 so I'm unsure.

    Love the vlogs. I noticed something in this vlog that you should rectify for your future health. The rust dust that was in the air when you removed the radiator may get into your lungs. Purchase some cheap face respirators, about a buck a piece, and just keep it around your neck so it's handy when doing this kind of work. Best of health to you, and keep the vlogs coming.

    I always wondered why they called those 50dn a generator as well, it's a brushless alternator. I rebuilt many.

      That is what GM terminology was,back in the day. Period GM cars ,the owners manual and the dash display called it the generator warning light. Even though an alternator. Passenger cars went to alternator,I think it was about 1963 or so. Fleet vehicles could be ordered with generators for a few years after that. A vehicle running all day,it was thought a generator would function just as well. Ever since starter motors were invented,about WWI,generators were a familiar technology.

    Hi Scott.
    Would distilled water possibly prevent the build up of lime in these GM cooling systems ?
    Also have you ever tried shifting a bus with out the clutch, I have done it with many different trucks but never had the oppertuneity to try it on a bus.

    While you have the radiator out i would blow the fins out as well see them plug up on semis with dirt.

    test strips are not bad , the best results to test acidity is with a digital meter , positive lead into the antifreeze and negative on the ground , higher than 0.3 volts , it’s corrosive to the system

    Holy shit...beautiful attention to detail. A question on the batteries - why 6 volts? Does he series them together for some reason? I would have thought most of these beasts were 12 or 24 volt systems.

      Yes, they are in series and parallel to provide 24 volts for the 4000 watt inverter as well as the Webasto furnace.

      the lug nut covers are fine as long as you pack them with grease before putting them on. few people do, and that's why the nuts seize.

      @@BusGreaseMonkey quick question for you. Have you worked on any Buses earlier than the one's i have seen so far from the 40's ? Reason i asked is that a buddy of mine used to own an International from the mid to late 30's that was super cool. Messed with any of those ?
