"On December 28th, 1980, Lady Plowden, the outgoing chairman of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, announced a major change of direction for television in the South of England. An 8-year licence to broadcast was granted to TVS, a new company to replace Southern Television, which had been responsible for commercial television in the South of England since 1957. So here we are, a brand new company. And we had just 1 year and 3 days to recruit staff, to buy and build studios and equipment ready to start broadcasting today." - Khalid Aziz, TVS 1982
Hi MrSean64. 'Bring in the New', I remember their first aired programme well as I could get a decent signal from the Bluebell Hill transmitter at the time. Southern were extremely bitter towards TVS after losing their franchise, but the new company did a great job. Unfortunately, they became a little too ambitious to grow the company which made it financially unstable and their 1991 franchise bid was judged too high by the IBA to be sustainable ovet 10 years. All the best, Nigel.
Hi MultiAstra 3. Yes, TVS's demise was most unfortunate as I genuinely liked the channel. But, in the 1991 franchise round, all the itv companies had to put in a bid in order to keep broadcasting. The IBA judged that TVS had bid too high an amount and had acquired MTM which wasn't quite the money-spinner that they hoped it would be. TVS bid £59.8m whilst Meridian bid £36.5m. TVS were failed for their business plan, so Meridian were the highest qualified bidder. All the best to you, Nigel

“ This is TVS for the South and Southeast of England “. The tune ( either New Forest or New Forest Rondo ), nice to see the classic one.
As a kid I always thought the TVS logo was a multicolour upside down Atari logo (of which I had the computers at the time). :)
