This used to be accompanied by views of Southern area - it used also to be shown in the afternoon before Crossroads I seem to remember!

I actually saw this southern tv theme while holiday on the isle of wight in 1980 and when return to the isle of wight a couple years later Television South was the new local ITV franchies, shame to see the Southern tv died of a painful death.

It was painful by their own doing. They thought it was their god given right to have the franchise so they only sent the IBA an 16 page application. Not surprisingly they lost and were sore about it.

There was more behind the scenes activity that led to the loss of Southern's franchise. I have been told that it came down to a personal vendetta, and had nothing to do with the quality of Southern and it's output

@@levisjeans1901 I've heard that too. The official reason for the franchise loss was due to Southerns same old, tried and tested programming, together with the lack of investment for the South East side of the region. This wasn't strictly true, as they had already acquired the land at Vinters Park, Maidstone, in order to build new studios to serve this area (which they then sold to TVS at a considerable profit).
Their programming was also of high quality, and although perhaps a little staid, I'm sure that it would have evolved as we moved further into the 1980's. They were in healthy financial condition, (which is more than can be said for TVS a decade later, through a series of poorly managed and timed acquisitions, were in trouble by 1990). Southerns main problem, as far as the IBA were concerned, was there lack of local ownership/management, which was mainly based outside of the region, together with their obvious complacency.
It's a great shame that the whole franchise loss was dealt with so viciously by Southern. I can understand the disappointment and the disbelief, but they took it out on TVS, by publicly ridiculing them, forcing them to work from Portakabins in the car park, charging them to use the studio space for programming (when Southern was reducing it's output), and initially, refusing to sell the Southampton studios to them. It was a rather undignified exit for Southern, and that's a great shame.

It wasn't at all uncommon for ITV stations to start up at 09.00 or so at the weekends. Weekdays it was convenient to start up between 09.20 and 09.30, allowing for local news/bible reading/programme line up slides etc before joining networked schools television at 09.28. When TVam came along, of course, it all changed.

Of course alas Southern ended in 1981 really as we know too. TVS then started in 1982; and then TV-am in February 1983 onwards. But as you rightly say, that is when the ITV start ups changed as they were on air before all the usual stations had started too.

+Anthony Hobson, it was usual for the regions to start at 9am on Saturdays.

I'm curious as to why Southern started up at 9am rather than the standard 9.25am...

Has to be the early 1980's, might even be their final year in 1982. It was a nice tune, pity they had to sulk about losing their franchise like angst ridden teenagers though.

Unlike poor old Westward who had to be propped up to see their franchise out, Southern maintained a fine service right up to the end.
