  • This video of Arnold Schwarzenegger being interviewed by Logan Paul popped up on my feed.
Arnold Schwarzenegger has been exercising longer than I have been on this planet, literally.
So I think there is actually a valuable lesson to be learned from this.
If you find a group of people who have been exercising in the gym for decades and ask them what their secrets are, do you know what you probably won't hear?
You probably won't hear much about discipline and motivation. They often don't need to dig deep into their willpower bucket every morning to find the motivation to go to the gym.
No, on the contrary. Many people who have exercised for decades have simply embedded exercise so deeply into their regular routine that it has become a habit.
Habits are often instinctive, they require less willpower, not more.
We all know that exercise is health-promoting yet a huge number of people struggle to stay consistent with a routine.
And this is why we need to shift our focus away from all the flashy distractions that the fitness industry has and instead simply focus on trying to get people to engrain some form of physical activity into their every day life.
P.S. At the end of each post, I remind you that my best-selling book, ‘Everything Fat Loss’ is currently on sale as an audiobook, plus digital/print versions from Barnes and Noble, Apple, Kobo, Google, and Amazon with an extra 14% off in the US. Please feel free to grab it before the price goes up.

Once the routine gets disrupted by ‘life’ crap it can be hard to get back to it. But routine helps keep you at it, it becomes automatic that you are changed and ready to go without thinking much. Personally, if I thought about it much I’d want to skip it and eat chocolate and flob on the couch! Arnold is an inspiration in terms of discipline I think. Hope I’m as fit at his age.

Agree that habit and routine are stronger than willpower when it comes to being consistent with exercise. I enjoy my training routine and don’t like it when it gets thrown off. This has helped me be consistent with exercise for more than a decade.

Life imposes gaps. I moved countries from somewhere I could run daily to the uk where it has rained every day often all day this last six months. I average one run a week now. The gym has gone from a walk across from the condo pool to a half hour drive away. I still have the urge to workout but the rest of life is pushing back more. Same when you have kids or have a long commute in your new job.

From high school to age 30 weight training was a religion. At that point all my gym buddies urged me to compete. I went to see some competitions and used the shave and g string as an excuse to chase beer as my new religion. That was 30 years ago. I still imagine myself going back but everything hurts

Interesting, I manage to setup a gym "routine" for myself going once a week. And I do feel it has become an ingrained solid "habit". But I still really hate going to the gym. Phewwww. Any ideas to make it more enjoyable?

I knew a guy who only trained once a week and was in great shape. It is possible but it has to be a really hard workout.

What do you hate about it? Find some form of exercise you enjoy and/or are quite good at.
If you're not enjoying it after a few months you just need to change it up a bit probably.
I hate running and cycling as cardio, but love swimming and rowing. So i never run or cycle and will swim and row. Simple.

I do NOT like ........... NOT GOING to the gym. I feel like I am missing out on feeling good..... and food doesn't taste as good, I don't sleep as good,,,,,,,,, ETC, ETC.
Life is much better when I have a good gym ...... with all the equipment - to go to. Period
