This is my favorite Superman moment. The people making the recent Superman movies could learn a thing or two from these movies. (except for Superman 4)
For a long time, I couldn't find TS in anything in the 80's. But in those days it wasn't like there was internet to find out his work. Now I know he has had a long career before and after General Zod.
This must have been from the Richard Donner cut that was released in 2006; I don't recall Zod telling Ursa to kill Lois in the original theatrical release from 1980. And the bit where Supes explains the molecule chamber to Luthor isn't in this clip, but is in the version I have on disc. Good thing I asked for the Donner cut of Superman 2 for my birthday; I have a feeling I'mma be in for a treat with this one. And I know probably every Superman fangirl from the late 70s to early 80s has said this, but Chris Reeve made the most beautiful Superman ever! And he was easy on the eyes in real life, too. And I hear not only was he a good looking man, he was a good man period. The current Superman actor Henry Cavill is handsome too, but I don't know what kind of man he is, and what kind of person one is matters more than one's physical appearance in my book. A man can be as gorgeous as an angel, but if he has a crap personality his looks don't mean anything.
Love this scene, Superman played it to a T, then crushes Zoo's hand, lifts him up and shakes his head like, "moron, get out of my house". And throws him away like an unwanted toy, then then big guy tries to fly, then remembers something, ordinary people can't fly.
By that time, when Zod was weak as a Toddler, it was unfair to hurt him so badly, crushing his hand like stale breadsticks was just wrong, he should have toned it down a bit and humiliated him, maybe make him naked and parade him around in public, then incarcerate him as a new prison wide all weak and silly.
“And over the last few years we have heard a lot about something called ‘family values’. And like many of you, I have struggled to figure out what that means. And since my accident, I've found a definition that seems to make sense. I think it means that we're all family. And that we all have value.” Christopher Reeve, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 1996. What a Super Man.
Since superman is just so chock full of truth, justice and the american way... the three criminals should have stood trial and had a panel of judges say "guilty, guilty, guilty!" But instead Clark and Louis just straight out murdered them tossing down a bottomless pit. Superman just kinda shrugs it off and says "welp, im gonna have to clean those bodies up". All: Haha Hhaaahahgha!
I think the point was that evil has no bounds. Clearly Zod wasn't going to stop at Kal-El. Can you imagine the pressure Superman was under? He couldn't mess up.
So, did Luthor know all along, that Superman had rewired the molecule chamber to protect himself from red sunlight, while Zod, Non and Ursa would be stripped of their powers?
He figured if it can block and cancel out yellow sun radiation for the red sun radiation to work, then the powers door indeed swung both ways. He guessed right
"You know something? You're a real pain in the neck!" *punch* "AIEEEeeeee e e e..." *thud* "You know something, Lois? You're a muderer!" "Haha!" "Ha ha!" daaa dadadadaaaa DA DA DAHHHHH!! Don't get me wrong, lol I grew up on these movies and loved them, but man...
Two points: 1) I get the impression that Superman himself was uncertain whether this was going to work. This explains why he came out hesitantly and "tested" his strength by attempting to crush Zod's hand. Otherwise no reason to be dramatic and cute; just come out of the molecule machine and immediately start kicking butt. If he did know, seems pretty cruel to crush Zod's hand just for the heck of it. 2) If this is a of transfer power, as it was in the case of Jor-el to turn Clark back into Superman, then this means Superman stole the power of the others and left him with not only his own strength but that of three others. So he ends up four times as strong!
I think he just needed to keep them in the Fortress long enough for the lights to work. If they or Luthor thought it was a reversal they could have fled and not been affected. Some suggested unpowered Clark could have gotten ahold of some Kyrptonite. That might have worked for one of them, but then someone like Luthor could have gotten rid of it.
Uh, no. Superman did know because when Luthor showed him the green crystal, he was aware that was the one for taking away the powers of Kryptonians outside the chamber. Superman played along with looking weak as he exited the chamber to make Zod think he was powerless. He faked it so as to not tip off anyone that he had just gotten his powers back
I love how small and pathetic Zod suddenly becomes after seeming insurmountable a second before. Superman lifts him up like a pillow and throws him away like the trash that he is.
I read an article this week that showed the actual attendance numbers comparing Man of Steel and Superman Returns. The article showed that there are more movie theaters throughout the world now than in 2006. Yet Man of Steel actually sold just a few thousand more tickets than Superman Returns despite being shown in more theaters. Man of Steel did bring in more money but when factoring in the rise in ticket prices since 2006, the reality is this. If ticket prices were still the same, Man of steel would have grossed little more than Superman Returns did. This becomes even more glaring when considering all the product placement in Man of Steel(IHOP,SEARS, 7-11, etc...) and the amount of marketing that was done for Man of Steel.
Superman returns actually grossed a decent bit of money, it just wasn't as much as WB wanted, and it was critically received horribly, so they decided to reboot, I mean a movie like Man of Steel making over 600 million is not bad at all.
This is the definitive version of SUPERMAN II, but for those who bitch about Superman killing General Zod, Lois killing Ursa and Non falling to his death, there is a deleted scene on the DVD of Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut which shows the villains being arrested. The scenes are sans director commentary, so we do not know why the director chose to cut them, but as the film stands, it's better without those scenes.
So nobody's gonna notice how metal Lois is in this scene? Here she's held from behind by the throat by an alien that, previous to having super powers, had at least a certain amount of military training, and she just turns out of her grip and punches her into a crevasse? Even Supes looks a little concerned 😆
Would have loved to see a short movie set in present times where an aged Lex Luther is picked up on his release from prison by Otis and driven to Zod’s diner near the North Pole. Here a bitter and angry Zod runs the last human outpost serving food, Krypton’s finest, along with his two sidekicks reminiscing about old times.
I don't see a good reason to leave it out. But there are so many scenes and versions of _Superman: The Movie_ and _Superman II_ that it's OK to pick and choose which scenes to keep and which to cut for your own version to watch.
This had to be the director's cut version. Dialogue is different. When they first arrive, Zod critiques the place and Superman critiques him on manners. Lol
No, they go back into the Phantom Zone when Superman reverses time. There is the deleted scene where they are being arrested as well as Lex, but they still end up in a prison -the Phantom Zone. Lex, of course, ends up back in jail.
There's actually a certain kind of charm in the way that Christopher Reeve lifts actor Terence Stamp into the air at 4:04 and it's obvious Stamp is on a waist harness with a wire . . no CGI back then but in a lot of ways it was actually better like that
The first clue that something was different was Superman stayed the same in the chamber than before where he was transformed to a mortal. The reaction of Zod is classic. He was truly outwitted
Terence Stamp, a very accomplished and serious actor, really sold Zod. Just shows someone with acting skill takes a fairly 2 dimensional character and creates realism. And Michael Shannon does as well.
It shows that Superman was smart. He was counting on Lex Luthor to rat him out, which was part of his master plan. Like Batman, Superman was several steps ahead.
I am glad that Superman outsmarted Zod, Ursa, Non by playing Luthor into the plan.. I am glad he did not trust Luthor. Luthor is an double crosser and an lying weasel too who could never wait for the chance to do an double crossed.
Sorry, I respectfully disagree. Why would Luthor believe that Superman would ever trust him, after all the things he did. And Zod, Non and Ursa have superhearing too. They would have heard Superman conspiring with Lex against them. Luthor already knew about the molecule chamber, because he was at the fortress before (and used the information crystals). Superman's initial plan was to get into the crystal chamber with Zod and depower Ursa and Non, increasing his chances to win. Luthor's interference gave him the opportunity to get rid of all three of them.
flatscan1978 You could say that Luthor didn't go through all the crystals while he was there - He even skipped crystals to get to info about Zod. Also I think Superman played a huge hunch on assuming Zod would kill Luthor as well (which to me is predictable), and that hunch paid off. And if he were wrong I'm confused by (as you say) his original plan - he would lead the trio into the chamber, all three of them in that compact space, and then fight(?) in there, or jump out and close the chamber door before they had time to react and then quickly return the functionality to its original state so that the rays would now hit the chamber and not the rest of the fortress.
***** I think Superman wanted to depower all three of them the moment they arrived in the fortress. He has reversed the process (bathing the whole fortress in red sun radiation instead of the crystal chamber) before their arrival. That's why Superman was in the chamber at the beginning of the scene, shielding himself from the red sun radiation. He never wanted anyone of them in the chamber with him. When he saw that Zod brought Lois as a hostage he settled for depowering Ursa and Nonn, to even the odds in his own favor. So he tried to lure Zod to come into the crystalchamber with him. It is easier to fight only one Kryptonian instead of three.
This was so golden: The like a godess, overbearing and vain Villainess is outsmarted and now powerless. She seemed reduced to a leather-clad, nine-inch-otk-boots wearing nasty lady with a domina-complex;-)... and LL punched her down to nowhere!!!!
Zod's death in MOS wasn't meant to be "satisfying". Zod wanted to die, so he manipulated Superman into breaking his personal code and killing him. That was sad.
Greg Baranyai MOS Zoe said that one of them had to die. That scene was trying to show that taking someone’s life is never satisfying no matter what. He didn’t want to kill Zod but it was either let innocent people die or Zod himself dies. Like Death should not be satisfying.
+Roy Logan _" and murder is definitely what Superman and Lois did in this clip. Zod and co. were ordinary people at the, they were no longer a threat, and weren't able to properly defend themselves against a person like Superman."_ As Superman once said: "A taste of your own medicine".
+Roy Logan _"I don't have a problem with what Superman did. My comment is more more of a jab at the idiots who bash Man of Steel for having Superman kill Zod."_ Ah, I get you.
You guys have to stop living in the dark ages, computer generated effects dont make a movie bad, if you want top notch superman action ur gonna need special effects, and cant act? He played the role he was supposed to, the outsider from another planet who doesnt fit in, and thts how he acted, and the scene with jonathan dying in the tornado and the anguish that superman felt when he killed zod, that was some pretty damn good acting, Its not perfect but its the best superman movie we've got
The thing that has always bothered me about this scene, and I have never seen anyone else noting this, is why do Zod and the others not notice that their powers are being drained? When Superman goes through the process it is clearly very painful. Why does this not happen to Zod and his gang? Surely they would even just notice the massive shift in the way gravity feels, or their own skin, or the cold in the room, or the sudden lack of strength in the woman's hand holding Lois Lane?
Okay, this is the answer. Superman had reversed the chamber, so he'd be protected inside while the red rays are on outside. He pretends to go through pains to make it seem like he is being drained of his powers. The villains don't feel it because maybe Superman set it up that they won't notice it, or when you don't know it is happening to you, you won't feel it. Superman must've also set it up that he and the villains do not change clothes, like he did the first time. Lex doesn't notice this because he doesn't know how the thing works and Lois is too busy crying thinking Superman is defeated that she didn't notice the red rays outside, nor that nobody's clothes were changed. Ursa is just holding Lois but maybe not that tight, so nothing changed there. They are just standing still, so gravity doesn't mean anything to them, and also, the place was not cold so they wouldn't feel any temperature changes.
@@sha11235 That's a lot of explaining and giving the benefit of the doubt. If it were possible to adjust the device so that it didn't cause pain and change clothes then why was it not set up that way in the first place? Was Kal-El a sadist? No, this was just done as a means to provide a little dramatic twist at the end of the film. It's lazy writing, and didn't give the audience any credit. The initial transformation was done with the changing of the clothes and the pain to show us the sacrifice Superman was making, and to see the cost to him physically and symbolically. Then, when the writers wanted a surprise twist ending with suspense, they discarded all that and assumed the audience wouldn't notice.
In the richard donner cut, Superman uses a time-warp to keep the three criminals imprisoned in the Phantom Zone while undoing the damage they had done during their time on Earth. SO he didnt kill anyone!!
Yes,this does include the one part I always remembered-Lois:(turns to the villian lady, whatever her name is),and says,"You know something? You're a real pain in the neck!" and with that, belts her, thus sending her to her untimely but well deserved end. Just hilarious!
Her name was Ursa. They had Lois do this because they weren't going to show Superman punch a woman and it was also a payback to earlier when Lois tried to punch Ursa in the face but it didn't work.
yes but everybody acted like v borderline psychopaths killing people with no reaction. They no longer had powers beating them and send them to the judiciary was the proper response. They will be condemned to dead, but it's rare seen Luis killing a woman without hesitation, Don't you think?
It bothered me at the time and it still does: both Clark and Lois casually committed murder, having a jolly good time. It’s also troubling that the vast majority of comments here calls this justice…
My favorite part is when Superman crushed Zod's hand and then threw him to his death. Then watched as the other two also fell to their deaths. With a smirk on his face!
In Heath Ledger Joker voice... Superman crushes a powerless man's hand and threw him into an abyss, watch a powerless man falls to his death, and let his girlfriend murder a powerless woman and nobody panic. But when Superman snaps Zod's neck when he is about to incinerate a defenseless family, AND EVERYONE LOSES THEIR MIND!!!
The best bit I found is when Lois says something like you’re a pain in the neck and gives her a right hook, because when that happened, while watching it, in the cinema, everyone cheered.
What a great scene. 40 years later it still makes me smile.

I like the fact that when Superman throws something, the thing continues to accelerate even when Superman does not touch it anymore.
That time that both Superman and Lois killed somebody, then smiled at each other about it.

Man, the things we accept in movies.
They weren't killed, they were de-powered and arrested. There's actually a scene that was cut from this that showed them being loaded into police trucks.

This is my favorite Superman moment. The people making the recent Superman movies could learn a thing or two from these movies. (except for Superman 4)
Christopher reeve is sooooo good looking in what ever he did rest in peace❤❤❤
The Fortress of Solitude could really use a few railings.
And a security system.
OSHA would frown on the lack of railings and other safety devices.

You plan on taking the stairs often at Superman's home address?
Nah
'General Zod' , in the end, he gets what he deserves ..I forgot how trippy@ psychedelic the original films were .. !!totally awesome ..
Great scene! I always liked Terence Stamp. He's a great actor. and yes Superman is smart as well as strong. awesome.
For a long time, I couldn't find TS in anything in the 80's. But in those days it wasn't like there was internet to find out his work. Now I know he has had a long career before and after General Zod.
Terence Stamp is great in Young Guns
1979
I can see it is because the music of victory is different and some shots are different.
3:50
The precise moment of Superman's Ascension to His Father's Throne.
Even more hilarious when you realize Superman was just trolling Zod there for a minute or two!
This scene was a total classic ✌🏾👊🏾
Love this scene, Superman played it to a T, then crushes Zoo's hand, lifts him up and shakes his head like, "moron, get out of my house". And throws him away like an unwanted toy, then then big guy tries to fly, then remembers something, ordinary people can't fly.
I thought I was the only one who noticed it had been changed from Zod to Zoo. Good catch!
@@CoCotheTurtleno. From Zod to Zonk.
3:35 Zod: Take my hand and swear eternal loyalty to Zod...
Superman: Sure, how do you like it? Broken in 20 places? *Crushes his hand*
Zod: 😨😱
Lois to Ursa: Supes here might have reservations about hitting you... but I'm not him! SOCK!!

My favorite part. Is when the big one tries to fly. And then Louis Lane. Punches that lady.
Good always triumphs over evil. It may take a little a while for that to happen, but it always happens.
“And over the last few years we have heard a lot about something called ‘family values’. And like many of you, I have struggled to figure out what that means. And since my accident, I've found a definition that seems to make sense. I think it means that we're all family. And that we all have value.”
Christopher Reeve, speaking at the Democratic National Convention in 1996.
What a Super Man.
Still by far the BEST Superman ever.
Since superman is just so chock full of truth, justice and the american way... the three criminals should have stood trial and had a panel of judges say "guilty, guilty, guilty!"
But instead Clark and Louis just straight out murdered them tossing down a bottomless pit.
Reeves will always be my favorite Superman but everyone forgets about Lois punch. You're a real pain in the neck. Even surprised Superman
I always liked the way the 3 villains fell into Luthor's and Superman's trap!
luthor's trap. luthor didn't help set the trap.
He guessed right
1979
"You know something? You're a real pain in the neck!" *punch*
"AIEEEeeeee e e e..." *thud*
"You know something, Lois? You're a muderer!"
"Haha!"
"Ha ha!"
daaa dadadadaaaa DA DA DAHHHHH!!
Don't get me wrong, lol I grew up on these movies and loved them, but man...
Two points:
1) I get the impression that Superman himself was uncertain whether this was going to work.
I think it was just dramatic effect for the movie.
It was out of revenge - make Zod suffer.
He knew, and crushing Zod's hand was perfect.
Take away Truth, Justice, The American Way from Superman, take away good vs evil, all that remains is CGI.
1979
Superman was all like, "luther you little shit!"
That place really could use safety rails for non-super visitors.
Superman: I knew you would double crossed me Luthor. An lying weasel like you couldn't resist the chance.
THAT'S WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR!
I don't see a good reason to leave it out. But there are so many scenes and versions of _Superman: The Movie_ and _Superman II_ that it's OK to pick and choose which scenes to keep and which to cut for your own version to watch.
1979
This had to be the director's cut version. Dialogue is different. When they first arrive, Zod critiques the place and Superman critiques him on manners. Lol
It's OK that Zod dies here, because he accomplished what he set out to do: Make the son of Jor El kneel before him. Mission accomplished!!!
But that was. A setup which made the ultimate surprise extremely effective.
Actually, Zod didn't die.
In a deleted scene, the three are shown getting put into an Arctic police vehicle, in handcuffs.
I like how Superman messes with them a little bit, letting them think they won, before he destroys them
Be carful what you wish for. You might just get it.
No, they go back into the Phantom Zone when Superman reverses time. There is the deleted scene where they are being arrested as well as Lex, but they still end up in a prison -the Phantom Zone. Lex, of course, ends up back in jail.
Lois realizing she could just punch Ursu out was priceless.
She does that in revenge when the first punch didn't work.
There's actually a certain kind of charm in the way that Christopher Reeve lifts actor Terence Stamp into the air at 4:04 and it's obvious Stamp is on a waist harness with a wire . . no CGI back then but in a lot of ways it was actually better like that
ChooseYour Poison Yes...I'm glad someone else sees it the same way as well :)
It's charm and poise.
Agreed the cgi is too obvious these days and you don't have to look for it lol
They also had a problem with Reeve's balls showing when he ran, so they had to make him a codpiece out of a rubber swimmer's cap.
Without the shaking cameras, quick cuts, you can see what's happening,
Sweaty armpit.

The first clue that something was different was Superman stayed the same in the chamber than before where he was transformed to a mortal. The reaction of Zod is classic. He was truly outwitted
We were in the theater watching this movie and the entire crowd cheered at this scene.
Caught this one at the underwater dog ballet and even the great danes had to come up for air with all the commotion during this scene.

Lois just kills someone and is cool with that . Cold as ice baby. Cold as ice ❄
Terence Stamp, a very accomplished and serious actor, really sold Zod. Just shows someone with acting skill takes a fairly 2 dimensional character and creates realism. And Michael Shannon does as well.
4:15 I kinda feel bad for Non though
Great scene using Lex to betray Superman unknowingly helping him.
It shows that Superman was smart.
He was counting on Lex Luthor to rat him out, which was part of his master plan.
Like Batman, Superman was several steps ahead.

Way to go, Superman! Way to go, Lois!
Love how lois punches out ursa to her death.
Or to be picked up by the Polar Patrol in one version.
1979
Brilliant! It's not quite the same version i remember though. I guess it's a directors cut?
*****
I think Superman wanted to depower all three of them the moment they arrived in the fortress.
***** I think Luthor isn't so bad after all and the end of this scene proves that.
But humans aren't affected by Kryptonite. To them its just meteor rock. It only affects Kryptonians.
Gotta love the PG-13 level violence from back in the day…..
Margot Kidder's Lois Lane found the strength to send Ursa down the pit of Fortress of solitude. Don't see that often!!
+Eugene Lau Well, all of Zod, Non, and Ursa's powers were gone and Lois was able to punch her and knock her down dead.
fortress of solitude. no they dead.
This was so golden: The like a godess, overbearing and vain Villainess is outsmarted and now powerless. She seemed reduced to a leather-clad, nine-inch-otk-boots wearing nasty lady with a domina-complex;-)... and LL punched her down to nowhere!!!!
Yes she is... nothing more sexy if the table turnes and the evil goddess is returned to a little naughty otk-lady;-)

The interesting thing is, in Man of Steel it was not satisfying how Superman killed Zod in the end. Here it feels very satisfying.
+Karlee Craziness
When it's a crazed murderer, it should be satisfying.
+Roy Logan
_" and murder is definitely what Superman and Lois did in this clip. Zod and co. were ordinary people at the, they were no longer a threat, and weren't able to properly defend themselves against a person like Superman."_

You guys have to stop living in the dark ages, computer generated effects dont make a movie bad, if you want top notch superman action ur gonna need special effects, and cant act? He played the role he was supposed to, the outsider from another planet who doesnt fit in, and thts how he acted, and the scene with jonathan dying in the tornado and the anguish that superman felt when he killed zod, that was some pretty damn good acting, Its not perfect but its the best superman movie we've got
reeves superman better than man of steel.
1979
The thing that has always bothered me about this scene, and I have never seen anyone else noting this, is why do Zod and the others not notice that their powers are being drained? When Superman goes through the process it is clearly very painful. Why does this not happen to Zod and his gang? Surely they would even just notice the massive shift in the way gravity feels, or their own skin, or the cold in the room, or the sudden lack of strength in the woman's hand holding Lois Lane?
Exactly! 👍🏻👏🏻This movie has many stupid points and this is one of the biggest mistakes.
@@ptolemyauletesxii8642 I was just giving an observation on it, that's all. It's still a great film no matter what.
@@sha11235 Agreed. I grew up watching these movies, and love them. But it is a dumb part of the film.

Yip that was a perfect scene! Lover her comeuppance!
