    I really hope Scream Factory does this with the Nightmare on Elm Street series. As it sounds like they did a real good job compared to others that ruin the movie with terrible color timing and color correction.

      What is it with these companies jacking up the color timing and color correction for older films when they release them in 4K? I get tired of seeing the bluish tint for these films when it wasn't there before. Batman 1989 4K is a perfect example of that as well as the remixed sound FX.

    For anyone wondering, I did a few comparisons to the tv cut that's included, as well as my own vhs from the 80's, and the newest transfer is by far the closest to the original, intended color timing. The Lionsgate 4k is FAR too desaturated, and the 2007 Anchor Bay transfer that's included, while looking very good with its warm colors, still is not correct, this film has always fallen somewhere in between, which the new transfer finally gets right. That being said, I'm not sure about parts 2 and 3, we've seen in the past how Dean Cundey likes to be revisionist and change things around(just look at Scream's The Fog and original release for The Thing, for instance) so I've decided to dig out my old vhs releases for those as well and see which looks the closest. Just going by the tv cut of part 2 that's included, it actually looks like the original 2011 Universal release, as well as Scream Factory's original 2012 release, look the closest, which is surprising seeing as how the 2018 4k steelbook was taken from an IP, you would think that one would be the most accurate, but vhs transfers themselves aren't always reliable, so I'm going to check at least three different sources(I have my own copy of the tv cut recorded from television, as well as a commercial vhs release from the 80's, so hopefully they will match up once I dig them out and throw them in the old vcr). I wish someone with laserdiscs of the first three films would chime in and give their input.

    • @losthighway1091
      @losthighway1091 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are screenshots of the laserdisc online. Criterion released it with supervision from John Carpenter. My research over the years has been that it is the most accurate in terms of color. Interestingly enough, it does not look like Cundy-approved in 1999 DVD. But that's not surprising. Every time he gets his hands on it the transfer comes out different. He has done three over the years and none look similar to each other.

  • @GhoulishGwyn
    @GhoulishGwyn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    Worth mentioning that the “original” color timing isn’t actually original. It’s the one used on the first Blu-ray release and the second DVD release, but the original DVD release is much closer to the original theatrical color timing.
    Also there are two cuts on the third disc: the extended cut in HD with SD inserts, and the TV cut in SD with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

    • @adkinneyam

    I respectfully disagree about the Atmos track not being much different than on the previous release, I was personally blown away by how much they mixed into the rear and height channels. The score stood out far more than I've ever heard it before and the daytime scenes included so many small details like birds chirping, leaves and wind blowing through trees etc. All in all I'm amazed by the Scream Factory release both visually and auraly.

      This will turn into a ‘my dad is better than yours’ argument.
      They’re both good transfers that appeal to people in different ways. Lionsgate is darker but closer to the original and SF is a revisionist version that ‘looks better’ to a lot of people but isn’t loyal to the original colour timing… that said, Dean Cundey supervised it, so who are we to comment.

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lionsgate is not closer to the original though. Lionsgate's transfer was a 4K remaster of an already remastered print that was botched. Shout!'s 4K remaster comes directly from the OCN, which means it is the way the movie intended to look.

    • @benpascall4297
      @benpascall4297 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork John from the movie collector TH-cam channel had the pleasure of watching the 35mm print on release and has his own copy for home consumption and says the Lionsgate is nearer to the original presentation.
      The SF new release is from the OCN but that doesn’t mean it’s a carbon copy of the original representation of the movie… it’s a revisionist version overseen by Cundey. That’s why one of the original discs has the original colour timing, which is similar to the Lionsgate 4k version.

    Great review Jeff. And I liked the way you pointed out Dean cundey had certified it. But the way I see it this film was originally in metro colour which was a bit of a darkened 70s film process. So the original 4k disk looks the best to me. The new cour timing gives away what the original colour timing hid. Which is that the film was shot in california.😀😀

    Jeff did you excellent job explaining what “Original color timing presentation” meant on one of the included Blu-rays.
    So it seems like if you own both the Lionsgate 4K release and scream factory 4K release, you have both the original color timing presentation on 4K via Lionsgate and the updated color timing presentation on 4K via scream factory.

    DISC 3 of the Scream Factory actually has the TV version as originally aired on NBC. The eye slits in opening murder are smaller as originally edited for network sensors and dialog has been altered as originally aired. There has never been a true televised version of Halloween on domestic home video as the extended versions on VHS/DVD although stated on the packaging as the Television or extended version is a composite edit of the original theatrical version with the additional 12 minutes. There has been only one true Home Video release of the full frame televised version with the edits and censored nudity of the first kill nudity and PJ Soles nudity and that was a Japanese Laserdisc. Again, the Shout factory 4k/b-r edition although not listed on the back of the slip DOES IN FACT include for the first time in the US the original censored broadcast version.

    I only had the 2012 blu ray release, saw this video, and went out to get both 4K options lol
    The Lionsgate is definitely less saturated, while the Scream Factory has much brighter colors.
    Both look great, much better than my original blu ray for sure, but they’re 2 different moods, and I can see either disc being someone’s favorite.

    One thing to note. There are more features on the discs not listed on the cover. A few of these had late additions like Halloween 5 with the additional footage.
    Halloween also contains The Night She came Home documentary and the original TV cut as it aired on NBC in 1981.
    So the Shout! release contains 5 versions of the film plus every special feature ever released. Its a full package that goes beyond the new 4k scan and slaughters the Lionsgate release. The Shout set feels more like a 40th anniversary release then the Lionsgate version does. Its worth millionth time dipping especially if your favorite horror film is Halloween just like mine is.
