  • @bridgetcooney5085
    @bridgetcooney5085 4 ปีที่แล้ว +437

The thing that breaks my heart about this cancellation the most is that we would have waited forever. We had waited, years between seasons, and we would have continued waiting. Hell...I'm sure a lot of us will still wait. There was no real demand for expedience, but the viewers would still be there. It just feels like it didn't NEED to be cancelled. For years it was a show that didn't rely on deadlines to be successful. The story, and characters were strong enough to keep us coming back nomatter how long it took. And I guess, I just assumed it would always be there, atleast till it came to some kind of conclusion. That it wasn't a matter of "if", but "when". And it really hurts in a unique way, among all if the media I've consumed, that this wasn't the case.

I don't think it's entirely fair to depict Brock as a one-note masculine ideal. A large part of his character is that he could be doing much more with his life, but he routinely turns down opportunities for more glamorous and action-oriented missions because he views Doc and the Boys as his own family and wants to protect them. Even when he goes "rogue" in season 4, he admits that the worst part about it was not being able to let Hank and Dean know that he was still protecting them.

If you look at the show the osi or “good guys” are representing of conformity and orderly society but most of the villains in the guild are based off counter culture artists, musicians and writers. I think it shows exactly what society view those as deviants that don’t mesh perfectly with orderly society. This show is extremely well written and deep while still trying to be entertaining and funny without being up it’s own ass.

This show being canceled is an actual travesty. Like as a business decision I can see why it was (7 seasons in 15 years is definitely not a standard television production schedule) but it just goes to show how making actual art doesn't fit within the capitalist framework, because it takes, y'know, time and dedication and real human beings that aren't forcing themselves to work like machines and churn out factory standard products.

Honestly it is a miracle that the show lasted as long as it did. Mike Lazzo, the head of Adult Swim, was just a huge fan of those old cartoons you mentioned. It stayed on because Adult Swim was his baby and he could do what he wanted with it. Adult Swim has grown too big to be run that way, and the Disney-Fox merger has forced them to change. The bigger impetus to me is the WB/AT&T deal, which got less press but is looking to be a huge issue. Effectively, ATT bought WB for 85.4 billion, in large part because the CEO of ATT thought WB could go toe to toe with netflix in the streaming warz and saw money there. The past few years though have seen a bunch of people who made WB big leaving (Mike Lazzo left, the HBO exec in charge of programming left), and HBO Max just launched in arguably its best possible environment (big pandemic so everybody has to stay home and watch stuff) only to have the cultural impact of an air-y fart. This, combined with the closure of theaters leaving WB stuck with expensive assets it cant cash out until theaters reopen, has ATT scrambling; they gutted DC, theyve supposedly been talking about selling stuff like Crunchyroll, and VB got cancelled in the middle of all this. The adult swim twitter account said they want to help it get a new home and are sad to see it go, and it had already been renewed years ago, so it hits me as ATT throwing "dead weight" out the back of the burning plane because it wasnt likely to have a big ROI or come soon enough for them

20:37 Remember the episode ALL THIS AND GARGANTUA-2? One thing that sticks out to me about it is how Brock calls JJ Venture a "problem child" because he refuses to play by Venture Bros. universe rules, but... in a weird way, I feel like that makes him a success by the show's standards. He created basically the Venture bros. equivalent to Apple and smartphones, and was responsible for genuine advancement in this universe.
Also, remember Dr. Venture's childhood trauma is... much more pronounced than you think. Even more than the "That is my _life_" scene implies. This is a dood who had an addendum added to the Unusual Torture Act because of him, had to kill a man with a house key when he was ten, and his happiest childhood memory stems from being kidnapped. No matter how much you think you can describe how broken he is, _you will fail_.

Even JJ fell victim to his own sort of nostalgia/cultural myth. You can't really find that on TV even when Venture Bros was airing. I might be exaggerating, but one thing I like about the show is their ever growing world building and removing their status quo. One might think it is just some parody to old cartoons and comic books, but the show really blossom into something different yet familiar. The characters stay the same but changed. The writing can be comical and serious. And each season feel more fulfilling despite then being shorter and the breaks being longer. Tbh, I don't think we deserve Venture Bros since very few people talked about it despite praising others shows for doing similar feats that Venture Bros did years ago. I hope someone put it on HBO Max, so we can bing watch it and telling the higher ups that: Hey, we got money, and we want more of this shit. Sure ranting on AT&T and making petition sounds easier, but if corporate cancelled the show because they think it's not profitable, it would make sense for us to vote with our wallets and views.

It was actually originally going to be another deconstruction, but after NGE _AND_ FLCL (which, admittedly not as much a deconstruction, still kind of falls in that area), the creators saw the writing on the wall and went "You know what? Let's just lean into this, have some fun" you can see the seeds of another deconstruction in the first... 7 or 8 episodes iirc, episode 4 being so trash was intentional, send the episode to be animated by another team, make the plot totally disconnected and irrelevant, parody shows with strong starts falling over themselves immediately, etc

@@skabicus8796 It pretty much ticks off every box on the standard mecha anime setting and plot list(Circa 1990s) then subverts the hell out of them.
Young boy thrust into the cockpit of the giant awesome robot to save the world by his mysterious father who vanished mysteriously?
Yep, but as he's a kid abandoned by his dad he's got severe emotional issues. And he has no idea how to pilot it which gets people maimed and killed. And piloting it is physically and mentally traumatic. And he naturally freaks out and wants away from said situation as he's now a child soldier.
      Brash rival/love interest?
Yep, but she's a damaged as he is and her brashness and ego naturally cause serious tension between her and Shinji that makes getting along basically impossible. And being eclipsed by the newbie shatters her ego and leads to a complete mental breakdown. And her ego is caused by a severe inferiority complex that taints every aspect of her life.
Waifish bizarre love interest? Check. Except her inhuman origins mean a horrific backstory and abuse, a lack of socialization means she is almost incapable of connecting with people, her artificial origin means she is treated as disposable, and her special connection to the mech means it wants her dead. And her dramatic endgame breaking free of those controlling her literally results in the death of everyone due to said socialization issues means she doesn't recognize that Shinji is basically undergoing a full mental collapse.
Awesome robots? Check. Except they are pretty shitty with almost no battery life and aren't robots at all. And their big shiny finishing moves are a very bad thing rather than an awesome powerup. And require human sacrifice to build.
Mysterious father? Check. Except someone who would abandon their kid like that would be a terrible person. And his connection with mystery waif is creepy as hell rather than humanizing. And his grand plan only succeeds in making everything worse as the giant ominous conspiracy is flat out better at it than he is.
You've got to remember, before NGE the darkest and most hardcore mecha around was Gundam. Which is, even at it's most serious and deep, is still lighthearted. Just about every one has the heroes be some young kid dropped into the cockpit and being awesome pilots saving the world against the evil bad people, usually with some special magic power.
With the trauma of being, you know, child soldiers thrust into war being limited to the occasional speech and poignant moment and the really bad stuff pretty much never really directly affecting them.
Just compare Shinji to Amuro or Heero. You've got a traumatized and completely unprepared teen, a psychic superhuman who mastered piloting by reading the manual really well, and a ultracommando trained from an incredibly young age to be amazing at everything who's only negative effects from said abuse being he's kind of a dick sometimes. But he got over it.

I remember I would catch Venture Bros every so often when I was watching my Fullmetal Alchemist and Inuyasha. I was always "huh this is weird? I vaguely remember Johnny Quest, is this the same show?" Years later I had something of an Adult Swim awakening where I actually watched a full episode of Venture Bros and was cracking up laughing. I can't remember if it was the court episode or the pilot episode with the "OOOOO" gun but either way I was hooked. I had to watch every episode and got crazy invested in all of the characters storylines (I adore Henchman 21's arc and Dr. Mrs. Girlfriend's rise to being one of the leaders of the Guild of Calamitous Intent) and bought all of the seasons available on DVD.

  • @Caitlin_TheGreat
    @Caitlin_TheGreat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +79

As an aside, the cancellation of the Venture Bros brings up another issue.
I _watched_ the Venture Bros back in the day. I think I watched the first 4 seasons? I loved the show. But I went on to do other things, some not even related to consuming media -- gasp.
But there's a sort of feeling of "what have I done" hearing that the show was cancelled, because of the underlying understanding that for a show to keep existing, it must be watched by as many people as possible so that advertisers can reach as many people as possible and pay the network/platform to then trickle-down some scraps of payment to the show.
And so, there's pressure on us to consume ALL the media content we, in theory like. Even if you're not in the mood to watch it now -- this hour, this day, maybe not even this year. Because if you don't, it'll go away and you won't be able to come around to it later to enjoy it. That's pretty messed up.
How often have you said or heard someone say "I _need to_ watch that." Not because they actually want to, but because of the subconscious understanding that we must consume content if we want that content to be there when we actually _do_ want to watch it.
On the flip side of that... why do we care so much? What I saw of Venture Bros was great, but if it just vanished completely, so what? It's just a story, and humans have the ability to make up new stories ALL THE TIME. Heck, if you embrace the "nothing new under the sun" idea, then probably someone will make up a story that just so happens to be exactly Venture Bros, right? Close enough, anyway. So why do we allow ourselves to be driven to devoting our time to consuming media even when we don't really want to? Certainly there are social pressures.
By saying that I have enjoyed VB, I can become part of an in-group of people who also enjoyed the show. Now, I may have to prove my right to membership of that in-group by using references, reciting quotes, etc. But... why should I be so concerned about being ostracized from that group if I can't validate my membership and I get kicked out (I am terrible at recalling quotes). Is my identity and access to social groups really that contingent on this stuff?
I don't really have any answers here... just having another "damn, capitalism has made our society f-ed up" moment. As one does.
One other aside: I do suppose that if we value 'lessons' found within the text of Venture Bros, then the concept of losing the show, or at least having its continuation ceased, feels like losing access to knowledge. I don't think this is ultimately true (the creators are still around, and the underlying lessons exist in all sorts of other works), but it does feel that way. Even if it was just a cartoon.

I started watching Venture Bros sometime just before season 2 came out (when I graduated from college, so I feel old today) and its very weird watching a show that matures with you over that many years. Everytime there was a new season (after my shock it hadn't been canceled) or a new special a year before a new season (the teasing) I'd prepare myself for the show not being what it was or really being too much of what it was, stagnating in the past but that didn't happen.
arg, how ordinary would Venture Bros have been if it had centered on Brock. I will never understand the fans who couldn't get past early interviews where Public & Doc talked about the show being about failure and couldn't understand the idea that at and some point it might be how you keep living after a failure.

You don't have to feel old - I was 30 when the first season debuted!
This show was a rarity in that (IMO) it just got better with each successive season. Even with the lengthy breaks between releases, I never lost hope that the next season was just around the corner. Even though I time-shift EVERYTHING that I watch, I ALWAYS watched Venture Bros in real time - that's how much I loved (and still love) this show.
As Jack said here, what began as a Johnny Quest parody developed into SOOOOO much more than that. For my money, this was one of the most smartly-written shows on TV. True character development seems so rare, and Venture Bros had it in spades. The news of the cancellation cut me deeply.

I wonder if this market-driven nostalgic reproduction of past popular culture, and the ultimate cancelation of The Venture Bros. as a consequence of the shows self-actualization, might also have some relation to the the tendency of long-running stories/series/franchises to get stuck in a status quo or, in more severe cases, to refuse to move the timeline forward and instead create prequels and midquels and fill in gaps in the existing timeline.

Just finished the show and that what I love about every season has its own taste specialty season 4-7, them moving to new york brought so much creative stuff to the show, specialty because one of the writers is the biggest marvel nerd.
There so many franchises in media where everything just goes back to the status quo either by reboot or in the actual series, example transformer always has to have Optimus, pokemon always going back to gen 1 stuff, tmnt always the same dynamic or get canceled. Even Rick & Morty, toy with their audience about moving things forward but Venture Bros felt more like, an anime or manga where there always twisted and turns with most of the time them never going back like when was the last time, an episode been about a actual adventure lol.
The main problem with Venture Bros it started in the wrong decade, if this show was around in 2012, this would have had so much hype on social media but at the same time problem wouldn't have the same creative control, so sadly the show is pretty niche, I mean I didn't even start watching the show till I found out it was canceled. as someone who only woke up their latent writer/creator after like a decade starting two years ago, who knows what an uphill battle there is ahead of them to realize their dream, two things: 1) DO IT DO TF OUT OF IT DO IT *SO HARD* AND DON'T STOP DOING IT STOP EVERYTHING ELSE FIRST and 2) i don't even have a pilot/storyboard/a goddamn intro pamphlet just to get show something to people i want to know i started up again, literally nothing presentable and oragnized as even a single episode of intro material, only scattered art and 500+pages of under-wraps screenplay/narrative no one can really look at cold. so you're already ahead of me who's 10y older and has a couple years of work behind me. you have a huge platform here, i pissed mine away when i left devart; and you have a tight and convincing mission with your story other than "heroes dealing with neoliberal imperialism and also people say fuck."
do it and remember this, the whole time.
EDIT: vefore i look like THE RUDEST asshole, VB was one of my biggest influences in how it came out of nowhere to capture the tone i felt the world wanted for. seeing you of all people put out such a great essay on the show's themes and legacy (wamp wamp) made my month. thank you for this! now go do your fkin thing!!

Venture Bros. has always been in my life (born about a week after the second episode) and It's sad to see it come to an end, especially as someone who feels like they didn't give it enough attention (only watched like 3 seasons to its completion, watching the latest season as it was coming out with my dad). I hope that my existence can continue to live on without it.

I don't agree that the shows from the 60s-70s "made" young boys into the types of men they became. I don't agree that they took archetypes from those shows and it influenced them enough to change. I think those shows were just an encapsulation of where the whole society was at. They would be the same people anyways because that's how men were in that time.

When you've been a fan of the Venture Bros for 17 years, deeply invested for over a decade, cancellation doesn't seem that scary. I've assumed it was cancelled several times without official announcement and it always came back. As long as Time Warner doesn't cuck us it could wind up on HBO Max which would arguably be an even better place for it.

Great video! I really liked your in depth analysis of this beloved show! I think it speaks to why I love this show so much. It’s very unique and sophisticated for an animated show. Years go by and I still get excited when a new season comes out.
There are a few things that make this show truly unique. One, if I’m not mistaken, it’s one of the only animated shows drawn by hand and not backed by a big production company, which explains long gaps in between seasons. But it makes me appreciate it that much more. When watching the show, you can tell there was a lot of love put into it. Second, unlike many other animations, the Venture Bros has a story and depth as opposed to single independent episodes.
It’s not only one of my favorite shows but it’s a show I can rewatch over and over again and always find something new. It’s a pure joy to watch! I never get tired of it. It’s a world you wish you could live in with all its chaos and madness. It has a timeless charm I think. I really hope the creators make season 8 happen. I know it’s not a mainstream show, but it would be such a shame if the show was indefinitely cancelled without any sort of resolution.
Anyways, great job! I hope this video makes a difference. Go Team Venture!✌🏼
