Clickbait Title: How 90s Cartoons Brainwashed Me With LGBT Propaganda
The 90s to early 2000s. It was either the period you started really discovering yourself, or the period you gained a basic grasp of your own sentience (or something else entirely, if you’re an exception to my viewer demographics). Whatever the case, it was an age wherein many of us learned as much from Cartoon Network and Disney as we did from school or our parents - and, as it turns out, it was here we were infected with the deadly liberal propaganda that made us what we are today. Or did it? Let’s take a look...

Howdy, folks. Thanks for joining me on this nostalgic tour of 90s programming. Its so weird that adults obsessed over the Teletubbies having hidden, complex symbolism. A show partially designed for pre-linguistic children.
M. Gilley more to the point, it’s a little hard to think that anyone that young would understand that the colour purple was a gay colour and that the triangle was a symbol of the movement. A lot of background information is required to make those inferences, and a toddler won’t have them. Hell, a toddler doesn’t even know what sex is, let alone romance and orientation.
the presumption that your opponent is omnipotent but stupid, clever but inferior, capable of creating a massive conspiracy to indoctrinate children into homosexuality but incapable of doing so effectively, for example, is a common thread in the conspiracy-theory propaganda of the right wing

@@andyrichter2714 wait how is purple a gay colour?
weirdo3116 I think the triangle and purple they’re referring to is referring to the pink downwards facing triangle the nazis used for gay men which became a common gay pride symbol later, especially when the triangle is flipped to be facing upwards
I thought purple represented royalty because it was a really rare color to dye clothes with and showed you had enough money to get it.
Originally it was.
“Royal Purple is the noblest shroud” is one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite speeches in history ever.
Up until the late 19th century yeah. Then people started inventing new cheaper dyes and the meaning of colours changed a lot. In fact I think we started talking about colours and thinking about colours a lot more too, because it wasn't a matter of what you could afford or conversely showing off your wealth anymore. And whether something was affordable or not wasn't tied to location either, you could affort blue even if you lived somewhere where indigo didn't grow.

You know, there is actually a very early episode of The Simpsons where Homer gets hair, acquires succes because of it, and hires an assistant named Carl who helps him gain confidence. Carl is obviously gay, but is never portrayed as weird, funny, or somekind of PSA. He's just this really friendly guy who looks out for Homer. Carl even kisses him on the lips at the end, and Homer doesn't freak out, he's a bit taken aback by it but ultimately just accepts it as a gesture of kindness. Now Carl only shows up for one episode as well, but it's presented as a sad thing that he leaves, similar to Mr. Bergstrom in the substitute teacher episode. This is why the Homer's Phobia episode never sat well with me, because prior to that Homer was never presented as a conservative individual or someone who was very insecure in his masculinity. Homer's an idiot and can be a bit of a jerk, but overall he always seemed relatively laid back.
I can agree. But did Homer really know he was gay...?
Ah yes "Simpson in Delilah" episode 2 of season 2. I loved that episode too!
There is new simpson episode where homer dress up as Drag queen for Marge.
There is also Mr. Smiters (i don't how to spell it) towards Burns.
@@jackdaniel8628 Probably not, but considering how crazy he reacted in Homer's Phobia, getting kissed on the lips by a man should've sent him into a frenzy. There's also the 'dental plan' episode where Homer is in Burns' office and he misunderstands Burns trying to get on his good side with him trying to come on to him. This freaks him out because.. it's Mr. Burns, but he still responds with 'Sure I'm flattered, maybe even a little curious, but the answer is still 'no''. It again shows that Homer's an idiot, but it's not an idiocy that includes homophobia.
Or when homer went into a gay bar said here's something wrong about this bar...THERES NO FIRE ESCAPE

Yea, wait why is there an /s OH SHIT YOU WERE JOKING
Funnily enough my first insight to the homosexual community was a Drawn Together episode.
If you're being sarcastic then WHY AM I GAY
Shit that might actually be right because that was my favorite episode when I was a little kid and I remember watching that shit on repeat back when I was as young as three.
R/whoooosh
one time a girl said i would be gay when i was older, i panicked and i cried in the school toilets for half an hour
I was a very sensitive kid so a lot of the time I'd have kids pretty pointedly remark that I "seemed gay" or "acted gay" - which, as it goes, only led me to feel more self-conscious and emotional. It's a crappy cycle.
I actually had a conversation with a bloke earlier today, and yesterday, about how he used the term gay.
You see, he got upset that a woman had called a man pretty (in the sense that he was visibly attractive) And the reason why he got upset is because where he lived, being called pretty was an offensive remark upon men's sexuality and masculinity (both things being an aspect that anyone can have no matter their gender...however for the sake of argument I'll ignore that for now)
I said "Well what's wrong about being gay/female"
He's still never given me a logical answer, but I pretty much know why he feels this way towards being associated with homosexuality or "Traditional" femininity.
I think a TH-camr called Popculture detective explained it best: (I'm paraphrasing) "Non traditional masculinity is usually frowned down upon when it comes to men." The same can absolutely be said for the standards society puts on women.
Society doesn't teach anyone to be themselves, and so when men/women are associated with emotions/lack thereof, or homosexuality, or femininity/masculinity, people use those labels to insult and demean a man/woman. Even though there is no issue with not having/having emotions, or not being traditionally masculine/feminine.
Which is dangerous. Because not only does a young man/woman (and really anyone) feel bad for not fitting the standard (Like both OP and Jack have stated, they felt like shit) But it causes SOME men/women to harm other men/women for not fitting that same expectation.
It also causes society as a whole to shame or view being female/male, or homosexual, queer, genderqueer, non binary, etc.) as an issue/Something that makes you less of a person.
Tl;dr - People should be able to do whatever the hell they want (within moral reason lmao) without being demeaned for it. The children in this world would make much better adults and enjoy life way more if emotions and expression no matter who you are were supported and respected.

God, Trapped in the Closet pissed me off so much. I watched through a whole 2-3 hour video (a big waste of time in hindsight) just to arrive at the climax of "Oh, everyone has AIDS now because of the ONE male-on-male relationship in this whole clusterfuck of everyone in town hooking up with everyone else"

One point I would like to make, at least for the case of Harley, is in the comics she has now been saved from an abusive hetero relationship by Ivy. Her gay relationship is highlighted as being healthy compared to her straight one. That in itself is fucking magical. But I do respect that this was about the cartoon and not comics, and the new comics are still fairly newer. Just a really awesome win I would say.
JewelCat Demon Princesses I will correct you on one point. It’s not a gay relationship. Harley is bisexual so is Ivy. Bisexuals aren’t gay when we date same sex partners. We’re not straight when dating different gender partners. Bisexual is bisexual and gay is gay. Don’t lump us together.
@@brokenquill9277 I'm very sorry? I'm pan and don't really mind when people call me dating a girl gay. But if it bugs you that's fair. It's all different from person to person. Yes they are both bi. I never meant to give the interpretation they weren't. I suppose I meant from the veiw point of a straight male reader reading Harley comics she went from a visibly "straight" abusive relationship to a healthy "gay" one. I also love that they are polyam and don't mind each other seeing others. But again, sorry if what I said bugs you. I know to some it's insulting, or attempting to make people's sexuality fit two types.
@@brokenquill9277 Just curious why you would think that Ivy is bi. Harley is obviously interested in men (The Joker, at least) but Ivy mostly hates men. She dated Harvey Dent, but only so she could kill him. I don't remember any other time (except that one episode of JLA where she almost married a brainwashed Swamp Thing, though in that case it's more like dendrophilia)
Harley and ivy are one of my favorite fiction couples for that very reason. Seeing Harley get out of her harmful abusive situation and find someone who actually cares about her makes me happy. She deserves a happy ending after the shit the joker put her thru.
Harley Quinn being Bi is probably the best thing that has ever happened in my life tbh
THE GAY TRIANGLE SYMBOL OH NO
ILLUMINATI CONFIRMED XD
Supportive* William the guy called it a “pride symbol”,,, the only time ive seen triangles correlated with gay people is when the nazis did it... tf
Unoriginal Title it was used as the primary pride symbol up until the rainbow flag replaced it in the 70s, but it was usually flipped point-up instead of point-down to differentiate and show that they were “taking back” the symbol. it was heavily used during the aids epidemic, google “silence = death” and you’ll get hella pink triangle imagery
@@ikcalv Indeed. It was sort of the opposite of the Nazi party co-opting the Swastika, a symbol of luck and peace, and tilting it on its corner as a symbol of war and oppression.

There is an anime called Card Captor Sakura, released in the late 90's in Japan, and dubbed for the US and UK in the early 2000's, under the name Cardcaptors. The original has a girl being in love with another girl, and two boys being in love with each other, it also has a boy having a crush on another boy, all of this was removed completely in the dub, in fact all romantic relationships were removed, including the heteroromantic ones. The removal of homoromantic relationships obviously pleases the 'phobes, but in my opinion the removal of all romantic relationships was done to cover up that that was the reason. It's much easier to say 'we're removing all romantic relationships' than it is 'we're removing all homoromantic relationships'.
This is also a show where no one even shares a kiss, not even the adults, it's just pure emotional, romantic love, with no physical aspect whatsoever, and yet it was still removed.

Actually right now it'll do more harm. Coming out can be very dangerous. I've seen people flip out over the mention of anything LGBTQ+ related. (My peers wouldn't color their biology themed candy land game with a rainbow path. Yeah... Christians disowning a symbol of their God... My the tables have turned.)
Not saying it's fair or that you should repress your sexuality/identity. (I would never, I'm bi myself.) I'm just saying it isn't always safe. Also, hold on. One day they will either love and accept you or they won't. Either way it is okay because family isn't who you're born and raised around. It's who you let in, love, and cherish. Good luck. ❤

@@mollof7893 Yes.
At Least with Harley Quinn, her bi-ness is actually portrayed in some of the media about her. Can't say the same about those other characters.
Knock Out is explicitly gay in the comics and is actually alien-robot-married to his partner, Breakdown. Sadly, yeah, his initial appearance in Transformers Prime was him being an ambiguously camp gay for three seasons and the writers saying he was that way because of a glitch.
FRAN BOW
That's true, Harley did end up in a long term, fully functional, healthy relationship with Poison Ivy in the comics...nearly twenty years after she was created, but it's better than nothing, I guess.
@@InoMercy Unfortunately some writers have written Ivy as violent and abusive as Joker was to Harley.
Wasn't she also the Hidden Bi before that? I always interpreted her as bi in the animated series, just with how she was with Poison Ivy.
She just seemed an odd choice for Word of Gay when she fits the other.
I honestly love Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy as a couple, they're adorable together (and it's way healthier than Harley's toxic relationship with the joker)
@them noice dose of dank memes the relationship between the joker and Harley Quinn was literally designed to represent abusive relationships, if you read a few comics you'd see that the joker doesn't give a shit about Harley. he hits her on multiple occasions.
I ship Harley and Ivy too...although some people say Ivy's just as abusive, just more discreet about it. It's been so long since I saw their episodes, however, that I can't verify or counter that. Can anyone verify this?
Ivy is a genocidal eco-terrorist who does things like petrifying innocent people while they're still alive and leaving them to starve to death, and attempting to brutally murder every sentient creature on Earth on the regular.
Harley being in a relationship with her is the worst possible thing she could have moved to after the Joker. However, because the relationship isn't hetero writers routinely treated it like its something wholesome and admirable.
At best that's bias lowering the quality of a work, and at worse its indoctrinating children into ignoring atrocious behaviour because a relationship doesn't have a penis involved. Given the incredibly high incidence statistics of abuse in lesbian relationships that's an appalling thing to find pleasing.
BobExcalibur well yeah but at least Ivy’s relationship with her isn’t toxic
BobExcalibur
they’re fucking villains, aren’t they supposed to be bad.....
It's hilarious watching them be like "Oh this male character is emotional and sensitive therefore he's super gay". They don't even make a point they just have incredibly fragile masculinity that they will try to defend even if it's over fictional characters you weren't even old even to think about properly when you first saw them.
And they expect the same stoicism from men in real life. Which is literally killing them. :L
Seriously it's like the whole mess with Steven Universe
Interestingly enough, while the first example from yuyu hakusho is decisively bad, that creator has continually come back to LGBT content over the years and it has progressively gotten better and better.
Most notably the final arc of hunter x hunter has a fully openly trans girl as a central character, who is fully viewed as a girl by everyone who cares about her. but the later seasons of yyh also features a villain who has multiple personality disorder. One of his personalities is a woman, who's in love with a man. Hes not perfect but I've always found his apparent interest in these topics interesting.
By "everyone who cares about her" you mean Kilua right? Unless I'm misremembering, every other member of her family refers to her as a male.
cornucanis well yes but Gon also refers to her as she
@@possumhead2812 As far as I can tell, Gon has no idea she's trans. He just thinks she's a girl because that's what Kilua refers to her as and he's very innocent minded. It's not a matter of him caring about her preference (although he almost certainly would if he knew the whole situation) but rather a matter of him referring to her the way Kilua does. Everyone else who knows the full story (the rest of the Zoldycks) refer to her as a boy.

@Robin Hogan well no, they dont. robots can get assigned with or coded with gender but they themselves have no gender
@Robin Hogan they don't have gender in the sense that they have no social context of their own where its relevant. They can't experience gender or anything to do with it so I think until we get actual ai, gender won't be that applicable. Because I see your point and agree, it's just that, objects can be gendered and people can be gendered but the objects have no gender and I'm not even sure which category the robots we're talking about would fall into. As a gay person..... thank you, representation in children’s entertainment really matters. Being exposed to Steven universe in my teens it was really nice to actually see my people being depicted as humans that aren’t just stereotypes. It was just such a beautiful feeling to see that the creators of my favorite cartoon recognized my humanity. It was nice.
Interesting how Americans freaked out about subtle hints to homosexuality in kid shows in the 90's, while here in the Netherlands, there was a kid show in the 80's that talked openly about lesbians, gays and coming out in two or more episodes. They did it in a very irreverent way, but not with gay people as the but of the joke, and it's unfortunate I can't find a link with English subtitles. The show was called "Theo en Thea" and also covered some other topics that would be considered inappropriate in other countries in that decade (think of drugs (characters are actually seen getting high), sexual harassment, war etc.)
As far as I know, there was never any outrage about the show. That said I wasn't alive during its original runtime (they re-aired it in the late 90's and early 00's)

When I was a small kid watching these cartoons I never thought that those characters were stereotypes of what adults thought of a gay or trans person, and it never struck me as odd for a guy to put on a dress or be very exagaratedly feminine, I thought it was just another character.

There's this strange notion among the less friendly elements of the Right that assume gay people have to be created rather than simply _being_ gay. I myself have frequently been told I, a lesbian, must have been created by some kind of media. And yet I was born in the Soviet Union into a family who didn't own a TV, and while we did move to the US to flee the Soviets my mother made a point of avoiding television. I didn't consume much media until I turned 16... at which point I already knew I was a lesbian. Also uhh, hey, my High School is in this video for some reason at 10:23. That's a trip lol
Kaye Faye plus haven’t gay people been around throughout history for a long time? even before mass media was a thing. Like I doubt Nickelodeon was painting pictures on clay pots to brainwash gays back in Ancient Greece
@@Emiliapocalypse Yep. There has been gay people (and an acceptance of said people ironically enough) in societies dating back to the early days of greece/rome.
You can find various poets and artists from those times who'll write or paint/sculpt/draw things about their lovers or life. Sometimes even homoerotic versions of stories from the Bible. (Greek and roman mythology has had no issue with showing gay people before)
@21st I wasn't really arguing that people are born gay. I don't think they are. Babies don't have any sexuality. I was arguing that my homosexuality developed in spite of having absolutely no exposure to the concept of homosexuality, _especially_ not in media.
I think "Developed" is a better term to use than "learned." Sexuality develops regardless of whether or not you know what it is or why you're feeling those things, why you're suddenly a little moist or have an erection, etc. etc. In my case I was living in an isolated, rural and heavily religious part of the country and as I stated my parents didn't expose me to much media. If a movie like The Little Mermaid or The Great Mouse Detective was playing, we'd go. That's about all the media exposure I really got. Though even all that I didn't much understand as my English wasn't very good until I was 10. I had never heard the term "homosexual," "Gay," "lesbian," etc. and yet I was having some degree of feelings for women as young as 9 or 10 even if those were more like the innocent crushes I hear some young boys/girls refer to.
As I progressed into puberty I found myself in a situation where an already confusing time for teens was doubly so: I _had_ only really been exposed to heterosexual couples before. It was strange watching the girls I grew up with, my sister included, all become infatuated with boys and yet I had no interest in them and found myself instead curious about other girls. I won't say I decided then and there that I was gay (I still didn't understand the concept totally) but that was the beginning, and not much changed. I even for a time *tried* to be straight after learning the hard way that people don't like homosexuals (And this was in the early 90s once again in a rural town in Utah, so I mean genuine _hatred_. My mother was abusive as hell when she found out. We later moved to Salt Lake when I was 15 or so and I started seeing more mainstream media and all that, but by that point I had already more or less known my sexuality. People weren't much nicer though, though that changed as the 2000s began.) and found myself dating a man who almost convinced me maybe I could be straight as I think I genuinely loved him, though as time progressed I learned that love was merely platonic. But I don't want to go into all the things that went wrong there.
My point is: Sexuality develops over time and you have to come into it as naturally as possible, but it's not at all influenced or determined by media in my eyes. People just either are homosexual/bi or they aren't. They aren't born that way, they don't randomly one day choose to be that way, etc.
@21st No prob. Always nice when people are actually civil in their responses, that's rare online these days lol.
I think sexuality develops and functions differently than prejudices such as racism/sexism/homophobia do and even more different than toxic masculinity. Said prejudices are learned as opposed to developed and tend to come from parents, environments, belief systems, etc. TBH I don't think there's a ton of media in the modern era (Aside from some propaganda pushed on the darker sides of YT and sites like 8chan by far, far Righters who seem to love using memes to attract teens) that actively influences people to be racist. I think it's far more common that media reinforces negative stereotypes and challenging said stereotypes is... difficult for a number of reasons, mostly owing to the loud idiots across the political spectrum who drown out any Left or Right wing voices who might be worth listening to, but that's a different discussion.
It's also different because one can turn away from prejudice. I used to be immensely transphobic, now I help moderate a monthly transgender meetup and am close friends with nearly all of the members. You can't turn away from your sexuality once you're development is complete. You just can't. I've watched a friends mental & emotional health literally implode trying to do so.
However, yes, I will agree that media *can* influence ones PERCEPTION of sexuality. I simply don't think it can influence them to *actually* be gay. At worst, if their parents aren't responsible and the media is deceptive enough, they might be fooled into thinking they are gay and then getting burnt. But I don't think that's massively common and I don't think that having gay couples/characters in shows aimed at younger audiences will inherently make them gay - which is kind of the premise that a lot of more Socially Conservative types and those who insist that "liberal media & culture" must of somehow *made* me a lesbian seem to posit. I actually think it's good that kids see that same sex couples exist and are valid. That's not harmful. My wife & I have 3 kids and so far they're all fine (And the only one old enough to have discovered sexuality is straight, in spite of what most of my Mormon neighbors anticipated lol) Just depict them in the same way you might depict a straight couple. It's true that homosexual couples do have a different dynamic than heterosexual ones (And I'm not really referring to the bedroom here) but that's not necessarily detail that has to go into these situations. That said, it *is* important for the parents to be responsible as well. When the time comes to "give the talk" as it were they need to explain why homosexual couples aren't as common, why they're different, and that they shouldn't ever assume that they are straight or gay and should take their time and be responsible in figuring themselves out.
Ahh, such good points.
Some of these knuckle heads must think corporate media board members are all pink hair college kids.
no, they know the pink haired kids are the target demographic the board members want to pander to.

I grew up in the 90s and if there was a rash of LGBTQ propaganda in kid's entertainment I sure as hell didn't notice it. All I remember is "guys who act girly are funny and you should laugh at them!". We need representation in entertainment not for reasons of "political correctness" but because it brings comfort to a lot of people who need it and helps them make sense of their identities, which is something every human being needs. I sure as hell did. (Before you ask me if I'm single, ladies, I'm not gay - I'm asexual).
That's what Political Correctness is for, besides reforming prejudices, so everybody gets along.

I did a presentation in my English class in senior year about LGBTQ+ (especially homosexual) characters in cartoons and the entire class was blown away that things like Steven Universe were actually gay. Because non-explicit portrayals often lead people to being confused about them actually BEING what they're supposed to be portrayed as.
What a shocker. If seniors won't get it, I doubt most elementary schoolers would.
Exactly my thoughts! It's extremely difficult to pick out unless you are in that situation yourself. That's why I LOVE LOVE LOVE that Ruby and Sapphire got a really long, really important wedding episode.
Cuz I mean. Marceline and Bubblegum were so heavily debatable, it was at the point where you weren't even sure if the creators were doing it on purpose or not, and then you gaslight yourself thinking things like .....am I just seeing what I want to see? But then they kiss at the end and you're like "Okay, my gaydar still works. Good"
DAEsaster Right?! Both of those happened a year after my presentation so the only scenes I had were KorAsami (oo holding hands), Jailbreak (two lesbians in a magical trench-coat) and Yuri on Ice kiss (which is apparently debatable)

That show pretty singlehandedly acclimated child me with the whole lgbtqia+ spectrum. It even has three major genderfluid protagonists in the last season.
Sailor Moon was very good in this regard! It's also interesting to discuss from an LGBTQ perspective because if I recall rightly they retconned a lesbian couple in the American dub to be "cousins" or something like that. Huge apologies I didn't mention it, mostly a consequence of the fact I never watched it as a kid. Will make sure to bring it up if I ever do a part two to this topic.

Love the pair of videos you made on the subject of LGBTQ+ misrepresentation, but it would be great if you had a video that focused on the unique and equally important matter of biphobia. It's an axis of oppression you notably ignored (whether intentionally or not) in boh video essays. We have decades of bi coding, bi erausre, and biphobia in children's media and media in general, and it has just as much of an effect on bi+ folks as homophobia and transphobia. Honestly the best way to deal with that is to just not let it bother you. It can't offend you if you don't let it. After school, 90% of the people I hear say this are, themselves, LGBT. It's just become a thing people say without actually having any significant meaning behind it, similarly to how most people say "Oh my god" or "Bless you" without being religious.
Besides, the people who *do* use it offensively aren't going to care -- they're *trying* to be offensive, and telling them they offended you isn't going to change anything. Likewise, people who say it that *aren't* trying to be offensive aren't going to learn anything from being told that's rude, either -- they're already on your side, so to speak. You already know they aren't against LGBT people in any capacity, so why care if they say something is "gay" when you *know* they don't mean offense by it?

There was another 90's kid show that did a transgender episode. It was very similar to the Lloyd in space episode. An episode of Whatever Happened to Robot Jones? titled "Gender" centered around the boys and girls at Robot Jones' school arguing over what gender Robot Jones was. Boys would take Robot Jones and have him take part in traditionally masculine activities and the vice versa with the girls. Robot Jones like both of those activities, and didn't see why there had to be a divide. At the end of the episode, Robot Jones decided that he wasn't going to identify as either of those genders. He said that he was a highly intelligent robot, and therefore "above gender". The overall lesson was that it didn't matter what gender you are, and you can be whatever you identify as. It's mostly about agender people, but it could work just as well as a transgender episode.
Yoooooo he talked about it in the sequel to this video! Congrats.
0:42 “the triangle - the gay pride symbol” lol as a gay no thanks to making the symbol nazis used to identify us our pride symbol
Dude it’s called reclaiming. Lgbt+ were using it for a long time now and that one cannot be ruined by capitalism like the pride flags precisely because of its history.
Prior to the rainbow flag, was the triangle. It was reclaiming. Prior to the rainbow was lavender and pink. Now we have the choice to choose what you feel represents you, but we have to acknowledge the elders who used the triangle
Hey, to both of you, unironically, thank you. I genuinely had no idea it had been reclaimed in the 70’s. I live in an extremely conservative, religious, homophobic part of the world so I’m not intrenched in gay culture as much as some. It still makes me uncomfortable, but thanks for educating me ❤️
@Robin Hogan Of course not! But you CAN claim it, and wear this symbol as a reminder of the atrocities of the past and as a promise to never let this happen again!
@Robin Hogan I will concede that if I wear it, because it's "chic" or "topic" without knowing what it really stood for (or in this case: against), I might better not be wearing it at all, because that would indeed be familiarization. I don't know what more to say than my previous post to bring my point across. It is not a symbol that says "hey look, we're gay". In my understanding it says "hey look at what has been done to us/our kind - and yet we prevail!" It is not (nor should be) used as an identifier but as a statement. And it's not as if the "community" suddenly unanimously decided "hey this is us now". Some wear it for aforementioned reasons, some do not, and both is fine. ...I hope I made my point clearer. ...your comrade in pride :-)
Yeah, the Yu Yu Hakusho thing was bad, but to Togashi's credit, he did seem to learn from it, and came back with an actual positive trans character later in Hunter X Hunter, in the form of Killua's sister Alluka. :p
Duncan Shepherd I love Hunter X Hunter!
Also, Kurapika is genderfluid (Seemingly).
People really forgetting about the gay jock from paranorman
wait no they did a lot of 2000’s stuff in this video, partner.
David Stinnett Paranorman is from the 2010's tho
That bit was so awesome. She spends the whole movie mooning over him and then right out of nowhere he's like "You should meet my boyfriend, he's a chick flick *nut*!" Paranorman is criminally underrated in general.
i mean that was fun and all but it was still just like.. a throwaway line lol. as much as i like that movie i don't think that moment's as nut worthy as some people make it out to be
@Smash 456 as a gay man that changes nothing. not only does it in itself once again introduce the 'feminine gay' trope in with a single line, but the fact that its right at the end and a throw away line isnt representation
for the entire movie hes built up as a macho straight guy. the line wasnt meant to represent, it was meant to shock
and even before gay marriage was legalised that wasnt good enough
When you found out that you're gay because you were expose to Tinky Winkey as a child
as a child i grew up in the 80's and early 90's so most of these examples were from my teens (and early 20's), my LGBT indoctrination was having a gay uncle. my father made no secret he didnt like my uncle because he was gay, and my mother had more of a sibling rivalry with him, but to me he's always just been my uncle. he's a white, gay, jewish man, who taught african american studies at michigan state, he knows more about new york history than anyone i've ever met, he was part of the stonewall riots, and he wears dashiki instead of suits, and if you dont find that cool af, it always sounded like you were the one with the problem to me.
I have been talking about this episode of Lloyd In Space for YEARS and nobody remembers it! It's such a good portrayal of the reality that most people who are at least mildly accepting of binary trans people, are really just looking to see which "box" they can shove the person in so they know how to treat them within the patriarchy. I think that's part of why even reasonably accepting people freak out when confronted with non-binary genders. They can't fit the person into "man" or "woman" so they don't know how to interact with them. They can't just interact with them as a person. It always stuck with me, and likely had more than a little effect on my own gender journey, even if only subconsciously. Positive depictions of gender fluidity and ambiguity are all too rare, even today as real representation grows.
To be fair I don’t think too many people remember Lloyd in space In general
they forgot to put the part when the character says "u will found you after i fell in love with someone"
It's interesting to see how people desperately struggle to know what you are in order to know how to treat you. Like....treat them nicely, like a person? Assuming vagina=likes shopping is unbelievably feeble-minded, as is penis=SPORTS. Because the opposites can definitely be true. Stereotypes are a crutch in place of meaningful conversation
I can’t help but feel nostalgic for the “Recess” episode where the tomboy character is revealed to be named Ashley, and summarily forced to join the weirdly stereotyped “Ashley” girl-clique. That bit didn’t help much with my own internalized misogyny at the time, but (as a canon Trans person) the parts that really stuck out was how uncomfortable she was with being forced into “girly” behavior, and the way her friends all change their names to Ashley and insist on joining the club. Doesn’t age well, but they boys shrugging off being girl-coded with, “hey, it’s the 90’s!” really struck a chord. Especially in way that a boy adopting a “feminine” trait wasn’t the joke so much as a jab at outdated thinking.
Definitely problematic in its own ways (see also: the whole “invading women’s spaces” panic), but it left a positive impression on younger me.
I got so worried when you recommended a video by another TH-camr and I see somebody's grumpy edgelord fursona in front of a flame backdrop. Don't do that to me...
Unpopular opinion spongebob isn't a 90s show it's a 2000's show
Why would you say something so controversial yet so brave?
It was made in 1999
I mean that’s true, but it’s also a 90s show too
@@Dave102693 So, a 2000 show.
I say that about Ed, Edd n Eddy. The Simpsons had one Christmas special in December 1989, then 8-9 beloved seasons throughout much of the 1990s, so that to me makes it a 90s show. And I think Hazbin Hotel could become a 2020s show, if they're successful enough to produce a batch of them after October 2019. Sometimes, debut date ≠ 'decade classification'.
So for a long time, due to issues with my own sexuality, the topic of anything LGBT was a MASSIVE anxiety trigger for me. Like I was raised by really accepting parents, I was liberal as fuck and had tons of gay friends who I accepted - yet I was so angry that I was LGBT myself and never wanted to admit it, or really even face it. There was a lot of weird mental gymnastics around how I accepted it in others but not myself, and that really does play into the ideas and reinforced beliefs surrounding LGBT+ folk throughout pop culture as I grew up. Main reason I'm saying this though, is because it's taken like 3-4 years of therapy to control that anxiety for me to even watch media containing LGBT characters, let alone topics specifically about it without a giant gut-punching stomach ache. So this has been in my recommended a long time, but I've only just now watched it. I never once believed in "LGBT brainwashing", but I was acutely aware of it being essentially a punchline. Being something that is different and ultimately something to be ashamed of. Which is why I'd go out of my way to make others feel like they shouldn't be ashamed themselves, whilst being frustrated with myself for not being normal in just this fucking one thing for once. Was hyper-aware of accusations against my sexuality and anything that could code me as such, and make people question my sexuality, so as a result I would overconpensate as to not give people the satisfaction of being proved right that I was in fact different in a way most people seemed to mock.
I mean, I am queer all flying-fuck, so you can imagine how godamn difficult that was. Not something I'm scared to admit anymore though, I'm actually proud of it and relish in the fact it makes homophobes uncomfortable for me to be shameless about it. The tables gets to be turned on them that my lifeftyle offends them so much. I don't remember a gay agenda in any form of media growing up, but I'm perfectly happy to foster one now. As society is centred solidly around heteronormative lifestyles, straight people really take for granted just how much their sexuality impacts their daily life and their hobbies and interests. This is absolutely about how some queer people supposedly "make their entire sexuality their personality" and it's always frustrating as that usually just translates to "LGBT person allows their sexuality to openly impact their life as much as it would to a straight person."
Everything in relation to relationships, dating, love interests in characters, movie and TV all revolve around their identity. The countless power-couple heading virtually any movie or media on the front page never gets criticism for shoving their heterosexual relationship down everyone's godamn throat. The promiscuous character in a TV show is never called out for the fact they're obsessed with reminding everyone that they are straight, they like sex with the opposite sex and they do it all the time. That's never their criticism, just their promiscuity rather than their sexual partner preference; it's never called into question. The amount of straight males that wear obnoxious shirts saying shit like "Female Body Inspector" or depicting how being married to a woman = game over, or any other trashy alusions to their sexuality. They're criticised for objectifying women and being downright just unfunny, but not for the fact they're constantly making everyone around them aware that they're straight. But Godamn if you wear a pride badge visibly, let alone a pride t-shirt. Being visibly LGBT in any way is viewed differently as being visibly heterosexual, and that is fucking annoying. For straight people, it's literally the default, it's what's expected and there's no attention drawn to it. But when it's LGBT+, it's specifically singling it out as being different, as being completely detached from the norm from everyone else, and it's like there's a counter as to just how much you can get away bringing that difference up in polite company. You get to be proud to be different and vocal that you're still just as part as society as everyone else, but the rest of society doesn't really care much about the lifestyle that your difference brings, so could you please quietly keep it down and stop making everyone else participate in it. It's like everyone gets annoyed when there's too many vegan options at a buffet. Most will admit to the importance of there being an option, but it's not allowed to feel like it's anything more than a minority, otherwise it's cutting into what they can have and enjoy.

24:40 My jaw dropped. What a perfect ending. Damn. I can't process it.
The Gayness of Sailor Moon got through despite of of DiC and CLoverway's attempts to censor it.
Holy shit. I’m nonbinary, and have never seen that alien show shown towards the end, but wow. I’m. Actually shocked at how well that was handled? Like, some of the things said in the clips you showed I myself have said when coming out to various people who didn’t understand my gender. I need to find this episode now. Thank you so much for talking about this!
I'm nonbinary too :D
Lloyd In Sace - Season 3, Episode 9.
Wow, I loved that show and definitely don't remember that show. Thanks 4 showing us this
@@theconservativeknight1883 And what is yalls evidence for this? If you point out that modern Western society is structured around a male female binary, I will point out many cultures throughout history which have recognized trans people and non binary genders. If you say it's just science, I would direct you to the letter recently written to the Trump admin in response to the released anti trans memo which states “The proposal is in no way ‘grounded in science’ as the administration claims."
Basically what I'm really saying here is kindly feck off this person's comment and go start your hate thread somewhere else. Good day.
Rose Thanks for having the most obscure profile pic and name, Garrett Watts is an icon
One "issue episide" I remember is from 6teen when Nikki got a new best friend and they got really close and Nikki then found out she was lesbian. Nikki is then freaked out and thinks her friend might be in love with her, but by the end learns that she actually has a girlfriend and isn't into Nikki

Very true. I was just thinking about that.

Man if I saw that alien show as a kid I probably would have figured out my gender a lot sooner....
(I'm genderqueer)
same, friend
What is that? Not trying to be mean or troll litteraly just trying to learn
same
Emmit Denton what the fuck are you talking about
I saw it and I was still oblivious and pissed that they didn't choose to be a guy in the end
my dad showed me a lot of more adult parody movies as a kid, and i always remember being disturbed by the end of one jim carrey movie. i think it was ace ventura pet detective? the punchline of the whole film is that one character turns out to be a man pretending to be a woman. apparently she'd slept around or something because everyone was gagging and spitting bc they'd, at the very least, made out with her. the whole scene just. upset me. she's demonized further after that, and her real crime felt understated compared to how wrong it was to be attracted to "her" even tho she was a very beautiful woman. i did love junior junior up until the musical scene tho. that just made me uncomfortable... bc he was pretty bad at singing.
Senior Senior Junior is, in fairness, individually a very loveable character
@@LackingSaint yeah, since i grew up with all of these gay coded characters, he wound up being one of my favorites. i may have to cosplay him at some point in the future to honor him for solidifying my love of soft, happy boys in media. that, and do his terrible, terrible song for karaoke at a con.
@@draphking but they saw her as a hot woman at the time, and the most they did was make out with her as far as i can tell. it's a slutshaming, transphobic scene that struck me to the core, even when i didn't understand it fully. she was a beautiful woman who kissed a lot of guys. they didn't have a problem with it until they "found out the truth". let alone the fact that most trans people and crossdressers wouldn't even consider doing something like that without disclosing their identity first. it basically boils down to the concept that she was a "trap" and tricked people. which is inherently transphobic.
I dunno man, I was a kid and it just all felt wrong to me. A large group of people publically shaming someone for being attracted to them followed by further humiliation as they arrested them.
@@renim2974 comedy can fail in its intent and hurt people. also she was publically humiliated??? he screamed out her secret? yeah that's kinda at her fuckin expense. and still its implied she was promiscuous. but yeah, that can be a hurtful thing but it wasn't necessary to play it out like that? it wasn't necessary for the whole police force to be disgusted at her. it didn't have to be a "joke" they wrote, but they did that.
Iv never seen the whole movie but I did see the ending on TV recently and yeah it is bizarre. Yeah it's a twist that the antagonist is transgender but the people in the scene are more upset with that than the fact that she's a criminal. Also I wonder if jim Carey would call that scene out today
I love that homosexuality is being represented in children's media more in this era, but I'd still like to point out that it seems more accepting of lesbian relationships than gay males. Most of the examples you listed were depicting lesbian couples. I'm not saying that's a bad thing. All sexual orientations and genders should have positive representation. That's kind of my point. It was just an observation really. Also great video.
Because girls are easier to explain away. We're very huggy with each other, touch is more allowed, and it's easier to pass off as "just gal being pals." If 2 men make eye contact for too long without being in an agressive state, it has to be immediately followed by a "no homo" because their manliness is at stake. There's no explaining away a man hug. Heck, people freaked out about Spongebob being gay not because of any character chemistry, but because he has a high-pitched voice, catches butterflies, and isn't super duper tough and muscular. None of which have anything to do with choking down some dick.
@Rando Korra and Asami
Cause girls are easier to explain as "just friends" to little kids
Straight dudes are frequently terrified of being perceived as gay, but lesbians are fetish material for a lot of them, so they tend to not take offense at that. They tend to be the most vocal opposition, so they sort of create a culture where it's more acceptable to depict a lesbian woman than a gay man. I think this is why typically trans women get a lot more negative attention than trans men, even though whatever supposed transgressions they're guilty of should logically be equally as bad to someone who thinks being transgender is wrong or immoral; straight cis men are made insecure in their masculinity and heterosexuality by the existence of and their attraction to trans women.

OR. Wait, check this out. You ready? You don't even need to bring sexual attraction into it (why on earth would your mind go there immediately? We're not all mindless rutting animals constantly thinking about who we want to fuck.)
Trans women get more attention than trans men because there are more trans women then trans men.
Please apply Occam's Razor and get back to me.
I'll have to defend the Simpsons' creators on John.
The character HAD to be incredibly campy (or, to quote Homer, flaaaaaming) because it underlined how dense Homer was in not seeing it, thus leading to the funny reveal and the subsequent outlandish reaction to the "horrifying news".
Homer's journey from absolute horror to his poorly-worded and still kinda rudimentary acceptance of John wouldn't have had the same impact had John been "just a regular guy who happen to be gay" or had Homer been more open from the start.
Also, John not showing up more is par for the course for the Simpsons. Plenty of non-key characters are one-note ones and are brought in only when their trait is needed... They then created more characters and revealed some established ones as gay, when times were ready for touching LGBTQ+ topics in slightly more complex way, or simply because they had became hot topics or good premises for an episode.
Dammit us homosexuals need to step up our game. Thank you for the constructive criticism
One day we will rule the world
I have vivid memories of watching that Simpsons episode as a kid and feeling very uncomfortable, partly due to the content and partly due to the standard "oh god, what if my parents notice I'm acting weird? how would I be acting if I didn't care about this? oh god I think I'm starting to blush..." closet nonsense. I honestly forgot that it ultimately had a positive message. It strikes me that a storyline revolving around a sympathetic character gradually letting go of their prejudice is probably great for changing hearts and minds (though it could have been executed a lot better in this case), but terrible for LGBT kids.
As for "word of gay"... at least it's better than the thing that film studios do where they suggest that some upcoming release is going to have an LGBT character in order to generate press, and then it ultimately turns out to have some ambiguous hints of representation at most.
