Maguire would work for this though, in a back 3 - like with England or before Utd - it maximises his strengths, ball carrying, passing range and being a huge slabhead while protecting his weaknesses (pace) due to the amount of cover he gets. A yoro maguire/de ligt martinez lineup is seriously well balanced.
Honestly Ten Hag might still be in the job if Yoro didn’t get injured, he is the exact covering defender who Utd have not had to bail them out of those high line breaking situations

Amad is 100% my first pick for that right sided 10. At Sunderland he was fantastic at playing alongside the winger, interchanging and connecting, as well as that drive into the box from the half space. He has to be picked over Rashford, who has looked so poor.

Ten Hag is a one season wonder with ajax, Amorim came to a club that won 3 leagues in 30 years, and already delivered 2 titles in 4 years, this year is probably another one. He has showed the consistency, and ability to build a squad and keep a squad strong for 5 years. If you don't know what you are talking about don't talk. He's the complete opposite to Ten Hag.

@@fernandotomaz2554one season wonder is a gross oversimplification and just straight wrong. He won the league three full seasons in a row, after Ajax had gone 5 years without winning the eredevise. He built two strong teams that got into the latter stages of the champions league after over a decade of Ajax underperforming in the UCL. It’s not as impressive as winning in Portugal with sporting after a 30 year drought but let’s not belittle EtH’s resume in an effort to praise Amorim. The fact is EtH was a highly regarded coach before he came to United, and he couldn’t make it work at United but let’s not rewrite history.

After that he went to bayern to learn from guardiola and coach the second team before moving back to the Netherland he coached fc Utrecht who he got to a cup final as well as european places and being rewarderd manager of the year. After that went to Ajax where he delivered not only the champions league semi-final but 3 straight eredivisie titles as well. And he has the highest ever points per game whilst at Ajax. You're on the money with pretty much everything in this video. Very clear and highly informative. Nicely done.
18:16 This might be the biggest thing though. Amorim really can't afford to fall into the same trap that Ten Hag did, feeling he has to play the big names like Bruno week in week out, regardless of performance level. It has hurt the team (and Bruno himself, who, like any other player, would benefit from the rest and freshness that comes with squad rotation).
25:48 My initial thought here was that Amad is perfectly suited to this role. I still stand by that but I'm coming round to your thinking about Antony. It's a good fit actually. Same for Mount across both 10 positions. Again, I just hope Amorim is brave enough to give them a run of games to showcase what they can do, rather than defaulting to the big names regardless of context or performance.
Would you say Garnacho stands to lose the most among our attackers after Amorim's appointment?

That right #10 role is absolutely Amad man lol. Antony seems to be on his way out, but even so I don't think he has the intensity for the role. Amad has shown he does, he is a much better dribbler, better passer and a better striker of the ball. His technical ability is arguably the best out of all our attackers.
I would also argue that Hojlund and Rashford can share that #9 role, especially if you aren't asking the #9 to drop in and facilitate any build up in the middle third. Rashford can also make those channels runs, and I think many people underrate his ability to make those passes back into the box after he's made those channel runs.

Although his playmaking has been a strong point this season, will be interesting to see how he adapts his game. I echo many of the comments on Diallo being that guy for the right sided 10, but someone I would like to see elsewhere is Mount being rotated with Mainoo, if Amorim does like a player that can drive from midfield I wouldn't mind seeing what Mount can do there if he stays fit, extremely hard working, maybe not as technical as Mainoo in tight spaces, but could be a good utility man. I am however calling Antony left wing back!

The fact that we bought three players in ugarte, de ligt, and yoro smells like a succession plan from Dan ashworth and his team cause you can easily classify them as amorim signings given his style of play. My only query is lack of depth in wingback areas and the fact that manchester united alreafy has many wingers who I doubt will want to play in wingback positions . Rashford, garnacho all are not the best at defending.

Excited about the appointment, but there's obviously going to be some issues with this squad and playing a 3-4-3. The centre-backs, particularly the wide centre-backs, have to be good at playing line-breaking passes. If Martinez is out, who's going to do that on the left, especially if Shaw is injured too? Maguire can play there, but has to check onto his right foot and can struggle under pressure. I'm also not sure if we have a RCB good enough to punch those passes into forward players.
Then there's the wing-backs - does he play full-backs or wingers? On the one hand, they need to provide width, push very high and provide an attacking threat. But they also need the defensive positioning and discipline to form a back 5 when out of possession, particularly against the better sides. Shaw & Malacia have been out forever, and playing Dalot or Mazraoui at LWB isn't ideal - although I do think Dalot at RWB is a good option. Mazraoui is more of a technical inverted full-back - I'm not sure he has the engine or pace to play as a wing-back.
The alternative would be to use Garnacho or Antony as wing-backs. They can keep the width and provide an attacking threat - but they will leave us more vulnerable defensively. I think it'll be a case of picking & choosing which games to be a little more pragmatic, when he thinks we'll have less of the ball and probably play more on the counter i.e. against City, Arsenal, Liverpool.
Ugarte slots into midfield, and I think Mainoo or Eriksen will be his partner. Mainoo still needs to improve his ball progression - either through passing or carrying - and he can't afford to lose it in the centre like he did against Liverpool if our wing-backs are pushed high & wide. Eriksen will fit well in possession, but as we know, he struggles out of possession and in this system with only two midfielders and the wing-backs high & wide, Eriksen could be exposed. It might even be a case of playing Ugarte & Casemiro against stronger sides.
Bruno has to take one of the number 10 roles, but the other is up for debate and has a lot of competition. Whereas before we had 4 attacking positions, now we'll play with just 3. Højlund is a very similar profile to Gyokeres so would assume he takes the striker role. That leaves the likes of Rashford, Mount, Amad, Antony, Garnacho and Zirkzee fighting for the other. Amad is very similar in profile to Edwards so could play in that right half space. Similar for Antony, although both are used to playing out wide before cutting inside. Mount could work, as he excelled in a similar role under Tuchel at Chelsea. Garnacho & Rashford are more direct wingers that use their pace than numbers 10's, so it'll be interesting to see how Amorim uses them. Zirkzee is another problem I think. He's not a striker that stretches teams and runs the channels like Gyokeres. Maybe he can play just behind the striker, but it's not a role he's used to, especially defensively. Rashford could possibly rotate with Højlund up front - he can make those runs in behind and stretch the back line - although he doesn't possess the same hold-up play, aerial threat or strikers instinct.
It'll be interesting to see, but I assume over the next few windows we'll see a lot of movement both in & out. I can see the likes of Evans, Eriksen, Casemiro, Lindelöf, Antony, Malacia, and Zirkzee moving on, with more suitable wing-backs, centre-backs and central midfielders coming in. It might take a while to find the right team with the most suitable profiles, wait for certain players to return from injury, before we see a strong United.

Listen, James. Whilst the tactial deep dive you have provided has been appreciated, i think i should mention to you the screenshot you used of sporting vs sgr @6:34 is slightly misleading. Because, its important to mention most wingers in the prem are told to hokd the touchline. In this screenshot, the wingers are not holding the touchline, making it easier to defend with that back 3. A prem team that has wingers hold the touchline means the cb’s will either have to split to mark or the wingbacks will behave as ordinary fullbacks.

Hi James, fellow QPR supporter here (former R block season ticket holder, you Rsssss!!!). I actually have a different take on how Amorim will setup United. I think he'll be forced, at least to begin with, to continue with the 4-2-3-1. Louis van Gaal tried to utilise the Cruyff 3-4-3 at United and it didn't work, the players essentially rejected it. I see the same with United, I can't see Marcus Rashford adapting to this system in particular. Arguably he is a microcosm of the issues at the club, too much player power. It's why Mourinho, Solskjaer and Ten Hag all failed, they had ideas of how to play, but essentially players want to be a direct counter attacking side. There isn't the quality to build up from the back, nor the pace and certainly not the hunger. The squad is disjointed and any new approach needs to be facilitated by brutally addressing dressing room player power.

I think we'll still try get a first choice left back but at least we'll have more depth in that position

@@dylanbishop4175 I don’t disagree. I’m done with shaw, he can play in the back 3 maybe too. Don’t disagree with your opinion on Antony either. Just an unknown if he could handle it. On paper seems like he has the qualities.

@t1lt252525 the thing is Amorim uses his wingbacks as more old-school wingers that just hug the touchline (from 2nd phase to final phase atleast) so he wouldn't really be massively defensive unless against more dominant teams, but if it's play there or be sold he'd be stupid to not want it considering he won't get any offers from clubs of our calibre

Not mentioning Amad is crazy. He's our most creative foward

Mainoo *might* have the pace (there are a coupe of players in the squad who don't use the pace they have: watch Zirkzee in training compared to in matches) but he doesn't play like that and I've never seen it from him. He is strong and has very good balance but I don't seem him driving past players.

He drove past players quite a lot last season, in fact his first goal for United he drove past two players.

@@alexfielding7191 Yeah, that's true - it was. I don't think he does it as much since he's settled in as a regular player, though - not from a midfield position anyway.

I like Ten Hag a lot and think he's a great coach, but I hope that Amorim's systems and setups fit our players better, and if they don't, that he'll make the necessary adjustments that Ten Hag refused to make. Whether that's changing the formation, dropping the big names that are underperforming, or giving different players a shot, I just hope Amorim gets it right. We need a W for once. lol
