    As someone who's a pretty vocal Warren enjoyer, it's nice to see someone else go "There are weird aspects of his character but he's definitely not as bad as some people make him out to be." Also, really good video overall :)

      Yeah I hate how everyone makes him out to be a creepy dangerous stalker and potential apist. I think he's just socially awkward, which is why he mostly talks to girls who are nerds.

      Nice to see there are people who like Warren! Yeah, he says/does weird stuff, but he's supposed to be a socially awkward.I never thought to his actions to be malicious. I think people over exaggerate those bits of his character.

      I hate how people portray Warren in the fandom. Sure, he's a little weird, but he's also a socially awkward 16 year old in high school 😓

    I agree that the Max and Chloe would break up. Not only both are so young, but Max indirectly killed an entire town for Chloe. According to true crime stuff I watched in the past, like America's Most Wanted, couples who have had a child died are more than likely to end up in divorce. I also think Chloe would have likely had survival guilt or some sort of trauma or grudge with Max for killing an entire town against Chloe's will.

    I'm glad to see that there still is a really active community for LiS.
    I'd completely forgotten about this game for 5 whole years, and I'm happy that all it took for me to get back into it was a single youtube recommendation.

    The alternate timeline theory is backed up by the game itself, though… I mean the first game… When you play out the scene where Max finally tells Chloe about what's really going on, after she figures out that Jefferson is responsible and has to go back and try to save Chloe again… They talk about it there. Max literally says "I'm worried I'm fucking up all these alternate timelines".

  • @bydlakbolszewik847
    @bydlakbolszewik847 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    I have a theory of my own regarding Rachel which I have never seen anyone tackle before. Forgive me if it sounds like incoherent rambling, I literally just made it up and I'm tryna share it before I forget about it. It's heavily implied in LiS1 that Max is disrupting a canon event so to speak by saving Chloe and the storm is a consequence of her meddling with events, but I think otherwise. I think Rachel most likely does have some kind of supernatural power and the reason why Chloe comes so close to dying so many times throughout the game is because Rachel, as a powerful spirit is trying to kill Chloe so that they can be reunited in the afterlife, and when Max saves her from dying over and over again, Rachel becomes so angry that it causes the storm to happen. So my theory proposes that it's not Max disrupting the timeline, but Rachel, and some kind of higher power in the universe gave Max the ability to rewind time, so that she can fix the broken timeline. That's why Max' powers stopped working after the end of the first game when Chloe is alive. They are not necessary anymore, so they're taken away from her. If the universe really wanted Chloe to die, wouldn't it keep trying to kill her even after the storm? I think Rachel felt guilty for destroying Arcadia Bay so she stopped trying to kill Chloe and that's why she survives after the ending.

    From what we know now about the sacrifice Arcadia Bay ending, we know several people survived the storm and not just Max and Chloe. David, Victoria and Steph for example. Life is strange 2 and true colours confirms this. I have always believed that Kate also survived the storm and that has been a major theory for me is well.

    to the Warren stalking thing. I've also seen another thing people have been saying to support the stalker claim, which is that in the chase sequence with Frank, Warren and Mark, when you look at his locker there, there's creepy pics of sexualized women with Max's face on them. Considering this is in Max's head, it seems that she herself finds Warren's behaviour creepy and most likely that's connected to the picture she found at the pool locker where she doesn't remember taking the picture (since she obviously never took those creepy near naked pics which are obviously not real either)

    My man! I appreciate you not buying the early release! There are SO many people calling them out on that only to turnaround and buy the SUPER version anyway lol. I get the whole Chloe thing from both angles, like why bring Max back and not have Chloe in it (of course we still haven't seen the whole game, could be holding out for a big moment late in the game).

    I agree 100% that it was realistic for Chloe and Max to break up in the bae ending. It makes sense to me because Max is called out by her (clone? Manifestation of her consience?? "One of the many Maxes" she left behind) that she kept rewinding to overcompensate to the point where every little mistake you can rewind and change to end in Max's favor. The bae ending, symbolizes to me, Max's stubborness and unwillingness to accept that she cannot have control of every situation. I think its very cool to put her on this character arc where, as Max herself put it, "old habits die hard"

  • @Kalitayy
    @Kalitayy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +37

    Thank you so much for defending Max and Chloe’s breakup. It’s still realistic, I can’t imagine Max saying “I sacrificed the entire town for you, you can’t just leave me!”, I don’t think Max is that manipulative. And I do believe Chloe has every right to make the choice to break up with Max. Chloe might start questioning if Max used her powers on her, so there might be a lot of tension and stress, plus Max’s trauma after letting the whole town die wouldn’t help either. Overall, there’s a lot of valid reasons for them to both break up and not break up, as long as it’s written well, I’m fine with whatever.
    I personally don’t really care, but I found a lot of comments from fans who are mad with the fact that Max and Chloe broke up feels creepy to me. It’s almost like a lot of fans treat these characters like real people a bit too much. If that’s the case, then they should also go as far as considering that these are two consenting adults who have autonomy, so it’s not up to them if both Max and Chloe wanted to continue their relationship at all. I don’t understand how these people treat these fictional characters like real life people, but denying the fact that these characters can make their own decisions. Like, don’t half-ass it lol

      yeah seriously, I'm glad others are seeing why it does make sense that they broke up, even with everything you said. How often do high school relationships last? It's been 10 years in the time of the game if I remember correctly.

      I think alot of people still don't get the arguments of people that don't like it. Most are not complaining that's its unrealistic, people are complaining that its unsatisfying. this game is about time travel and multi realities, now wanna get realistic? and OFF SCREEN? There are many realistic things you can write for your characters, but it should be interesting. reading a few lines of texts is not engaging, or even emotional. Here is my best example, lets say for bayers, you check socials and you see a student posted an old article that Kate marsh after battling her demons, killed her self years ago. Is it realistic? sure, she already did it in one timeline and sometimes some bad moments can you push over the edge. Is it satisfying? No because it invalided your actions of the last game and it was done off screen so there is no emotional weight. If they are forcing a break up of the two main characters of the 1st game, that should almost be a game itself.

    Hello :)
    I love these deep dives so much! It’s so fascinating to look back at the theories the fandom had back then :) Let’s talk about each character you mentioned!
    Firstly: Chloe and her breakup with Max. Not a part of the deep dive, but I wanted to illustrate _why_ fans were so upset about it. To Baers, Max and Chloe breaking up after the Bae ending just to tell a story without Chloe would be equivalent to another storm destroying Arcadia Bay just to tell a story without the town. Not to mention, Chloe is fine with either choice Max makes, so there’s no reason to disrespect any of the endings. As someone who sacrificed Chloe, I hoped that the people who saved her would get their Pricefield happy ending … so I hope that Deck Nine will give them one!
    So, now onto the actual deep dive ;)
    Max: I think no story will escape the “it was all a dream” theory unless it’s actually a story about a dream XD And to be fair, the entire game is basically a dream in the Bay ending, with only Max remembering the events of the week, but I’m very glad they’re still real to her :)
    Warren: Definitely a weird dude, but I think fans make him WAY worse than he actually is. Here, I think many people forget his age; he’s only sixteen, and I’m pretty sure we were all dumb teenagers around that age, doing stupid stuff without considering the consequences XD
    Kate: I think the theory about her buying drugs from Frank got officially debunked, but it’s an interesting theory nevertheless. I wonder what happened to her after the events of the game, since I also believe she survives the Bae ending if she was saved previously. I think one of the devs suggested that, too.
    David: He always seemed like an obvious red herring to me, so I never suspected him of being involved in the main story. I like the theory that he was onto Nathan and Jefferson before Max and Chloe were, though :)
    Homeless Lady: A part of me is still upset that the theory about her being an Alternate Max didn’t turn out to be true XD It was such a great theory and I really wanted to believe it. Oh well :)
    Sean: Seemed like a non-figure to me, tbh. Never suspected him of him being Jefferson, but simply the spider that controls the nest - someone who doesn’t need to be seen, but has power to make everything possible. Which didn’t turn out to be true either, but is a reasonably assumption, I think!
    Thanks again for the video, it was really fun to essentially go back in time this way :)

    1:55 It's not just because a ship was ruined. It's because the original game gave you 2 choices and Double Exposure punishes you for picking one of them. The game is objectively worse if you chose that outcome. Generalizing the hate for the game before you have even played it is a bit silly. Especially when a lot of it is because of problems with D9 and other aspects of the game that have nothing to do with Chloe at all. Not gonna say much more because I don't want to spoil it for you, but they should've just picked one canon ending for this game and called it a day. Advertising it as "respecting both choices" was a mistake.

    although the game tries to remind us that Max hasn’t used her rewind powers for a long time. Something tells me she used her powers in her relationship whenever Chloe would mess up and Max being honest girl she would probably just tell her I don’t think every time Max used her power Chloe felt good about it, I think it caused an insecurity in the relationship, trying to kinda control the relationship and wanting the relationship to go about naturally. It sucks we have to read into it that much but I would like to think there’s layers to it. Also at the same time we can decide our own head cannon. We can also decide not to even play the new game.

    It's realistic for them to break up, It's a game with time power. Also The original creator said they would be together forever, It's not that hard to see why people are upset. DE says they respectful to both ending when they're not. Chole breaking up with Max cuz she's free spirit is nonsensical to her character and then her getting with Victoria Chase is weird. They ignored canon event's like chole is surprised to find her mom dead when she knows that she died if Max chose her. Change context of their iconic photo but don't have all the right details. Max is a little off, she draws and has a photo of chole as a teenager instead of adult. Her drawing of herself in the dark room is not sexual but she draw with a big ass and that's weird

  • @sae7051
    @sae7051 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    What we’re seeing with double exposure is the age old problem of the life is strange sequel. How do you make a continuation of a game with two such vastly different endings? Really, there are only two choices. Either you disregard player choice and just make a game that follows only one of the endings, or you keep player choice but make the events of the first game play such a small role that the two branches don’t differ much besides some dialogue changes. Double exposure chose the latter option, and that’s why the whole breakup feels disingenuous to me. They basically HAD to get Chloe out of the picture because there is a whole branch of the story where she is not alive.
    The devs of the original life is strange never wanted to make a direct sequel for this exact reason, but decknine picked up the series and they had other plans. I’m assuming because none of the other lis games ever did as well as the original, they just decided to bring back Max. But if you’re returning to such a beloved game and character after almost a decade, you have to do it justice, and this game just doesn’t so far. It doesn’t feel like "here’s a sequel because we had a good idea and genuinely wanted to make one", it feels more like "we actually wanted to tell a different story but shoved Max into it because our previous game flopped". It’s a shame because the story of double exposure is solid, I’m sure it would’ve worked well with a different protagonist and without tainting the original.
    But alas, you’re the first person I’ve seen say anything positive about the breakup, so I’m glad at least someone can get enjoyment out of that decision lmao.

    Sure, it's 'realistic' for Max and Chloe to break up, but that doesn't make it a good narrative decision. In order to reach this point, they made Chloe act increadibly out of character which is just shitty writing. Also, the entire reason for this breakup outside the context of the games story was just so they could shove other love interests down our throats which feels increadibly slimely like they didn't break them up because they thought it would be a genuinely good narrative decision but rather because it would have been too difficult to implement Chloe into the narrative. Let's also not forget how whenever fans asked about Chloe in the leaf up to the game they were always met with no real response as to what her role within the game would be, which feels really slimey as if they knew fans wouldn't like the answer so they hid it. By breaking up Max and Chloe they have ruined one of the most celebrated and loved LGBTQ+ couples in gaming for no other reason then to shove Max into a new game for more sales and disrespected a huge part of the fandom that has kept the franchise relevant for years.

  • @erpmario
    @erpmario 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

    Hey! 😄 Proud Pricefielder and sacrificer of Arcadia Bay here. I wanted to try and offer some insight into _why_ exactly Double Exposure's handling of Chloe was so upsetting to us. There's a lot of noise surrounding this controversy online, so I'm hoping this'll be a little bit clearer and more level-headed than the typical "REEEEEE yOu rUiNeD mY sHiP!!1!!" you see a lot of. Also apologies in advance, cause this is probably gonna be a super long post 😅 (Obviously spoilers for the first episode of DE below.)
    By far the biggest issue with the breakup is not that it happened in the first place, but _why_ it happened, _how_ it happened, and how the game presents that information to the player.
    First, the why. Here's a Chloe quote from a flashback presented in DE: *"I wish you'd never come back to Arcadia Bay. You're the real storm."* It's completely unbelievable that _this_ is the same Chloe from the comics who told Max, *"Don't blame yourself... We can't know for certain we caused the storm... Whatever you choose, I'll stand by you."* Meanwhile, in a text thread, Chloe borderline accuses Max of using her rewind to selfishly get what she wants from Chloe against her will. Reminder that Chloe was always the one urging Max to use her power, often in an irresponsible way. Max was always the voice of reason, believing her power wasn't meant to be used flippantly. The idea that Chloe would somehow blame Max for the storm _and_ distrust Max regarding the use of her rewind power is just inconsistent with her established character.
    Second, the how. Reminder that one of the reasons given for the breakup is that "Max was too stuck in the past" and "Chloe is a free spirit who wants to look toward the future," and thus _Chloe_ left _Max_ . I hope I don't have to explain why that's nonsensical. Previous entries in the series make it very clear that _Chloe_ is the one who has trouble letting go of her past and _Max_ is too apt to focus on the present and future while forgetting about the past. Before the Storm shows this plain as day. Chloe is still writing to Max in her journal, and meanwhile Max is too focused on her life in Seattle to even reply to Chloe's texts. (Funnily enough, you even mention this in the deep dive proper 😉) Chloe is the epitome of loyalty. She's basically the Loyalist enneagram personified. So the main takeaway is this: Chloe would never leave Max. If Pricefield were to break up, it would _always_ be Max's decision, whether it be an explicit cutting off or a gradual losing touch.
    Finally (and this might be the biggest reason for the backlash), how the game presents this information to the player. Not even half an hour into the game, you are given two options when asked about Chloe: "She Died" or "We Broke Up/Drifted Apart." Double Exposure asks a Bae player to throw away a relationship (whether romantic or platonic) they've held onto for the past decade within the first 30 minutes. It then proceeds to shove a new love interest in your face, asking you point-blank whether you want to date her or just be friends. Even beyond this, DE continually twists the knife with flashbacks and social media posts of a nearly unrecognizable Chloe doing everything she can to hurt Max more. It's just mean-spirited and comes off like Deck Nine actively hates those who chose to sacrifice the Bay (and this is all after they came out and said they were going to "respect both endings").
    I could certainly keep going and write this post a lot better than I did, but I think it's long enough at this point 😅 If I had to summarize, I'd say I'm okay with the concept of a Pricefield breakup, but it needs to make narrative sense, maintain consistency with the established canon, and be handled very delicately by the game in question. DE did _none_ of these three things, and that's why I personally take issue with it.
    I also don't mean for this to be a completely negative post towards you, since I do really enjoy your deep dives and look forward to hearing you talk more about DE 💙 I just figured since you admittedly haven't played the game yet, I should offer a perspective that is hopefully more level-headed than most of the online screeching and may drive you to keep a more open mind 😄

      Exactly, I’m a diehard Pricefield shipper who played the original game when it came out and I’m fine with a breakup as long as it lines up with the characters I knew. (Not completely fine since they were still together in my headcanon for after the first game but I could see why they’d go this route… just kinda sucks that there wasn’t a choice to still be with her long distance if they really didn’t want to bring Chloe back 🥲)
      But they butchered Chloe’s character so badly and it just doesn’t feel like them.
