Steph has always ran away from trauma whether that be the destruction of Arcadia Bay/the death of Chloe and Rachel, or in her spin-off book where she leaves her girlfriend after they start having troubles and stays in Haven. Her wanting to leave after Gabe’s death is her doing that again even if it’s only subconsciously. Alex convincing Steph to stay allows both to finally have a home and support network they’ve never had before.
Its worth commenting that Steph if romanced is willing to stay in the town if the Alex wants that. It is what happened to me. I fell in love with the town so I really wanted to stay and I was so thankful when she decided to stay also. With her DLC Story it also gives her a nice closure to her story as she was constantly running and ghosting people and here is her finally deciding to stay put. Im thankful that story worked out for me lol. I was worried I was going to get a disappointing moment. It was so nice getting this sequel that gave me a positive ending I was happy with compared with LiS where I love the game but damn I hate the ending[s]
I have to disagree about the romances, both on the grounds of Ryan vs Steph and staying vs leaving. With the context of wavelengths ending with Steph and Alex meeting for the first time, it's a nice bow on things. Second, you don't HAVE to leave to be with Steph, since she'll stay if you do. Though personally, by the end of the game I was so done with Haven and its shit that I thought "Fuck this place" and left with Steph. I know I wouldn't be able to stay after all that happened, so I figured it was best to move on and put it behind me.
I can add something to the cut content too. When I was fan translating the game to Polish I found an unused interaction where Alex was looking for a missing puzzle piece in her apartment. The second thing was the whole Council argument at the end of the story before Alex tried to talk sense to Jed was fully subtitled before they decided to muffle it. These aren't big bits but I thought they're interesting still.
I’m really glad you talked about how the game being released all at once was a detriment to its reception (and to its impact as a story). That’s something I thought about when it came out, because I played it more or less at release, and at the time I felt like I’d messed up my experience by playing through it all at once - or at least, in a short amount of time relative to the months there were between episodes of the previous games. I felt like I’d sped through it and didn’t have/give myself enough time to really appreciate it. And while that may still be true, it’s nice to know it wasn’t JUST that. You’re right about the story itself being cut and dry, but to build on what you said, if the episodes had time in between for us to process and theorize, I think that it would have held on to some of that mystery and intrigue it had when it was announced/in the time leading up to release, and it would have landed much better overall. Don’t get me wrong, I loved this game a lot - in fact, I think in a lot of ways, one could argue that it does the best at being a LIS game. It definitely has a lot more going FOR it than against it. But I always felt like despite how good it is, there was just a little something lacking, and you hit the nail on the head. I also liked the potential questions we would have been asking that you came up with, because it’s just so true. There were a lot of threads that just…get answered basically right then and there, because that’s just the nature of the game being released in this way, even though part of the fun of the previous games was the effort from the community to try and solve them together. Also, neither here nor there, but I totally agree about Ryan being the better romance option. I love Steph and I can definitely see why people would go that route, but I do think if you want a romance, you’re right that there’s just something more narratively satisfying about (and forgive my phrasing) picking Ryan. I think it has to do with his and Alex’s connection, their dynamic, as well as their places within the story both together and as individuals. Despite what could (and does, depending on your choices) turn into them being in opposition, with the roles they have both in comparison to AND separate from each other, we see that there’s a way to overcome those perceived roles and make something really great out of a terrible situation. But that’s a discussion for another day, and ultimately, to each their own. Great video! I look forward to seeing what you do next :)
Hello :) When I first played True Colors, I was pretty underwhelmed honestly, but since then, my love for it continued to grow :) While it’s (currently) the lowest on my list, I still love it a lot, so I was happy you shared your own love and some theories here! But first, some general thoughts you also mentioned: I desperately want episodic releases to be back, which is kinda funny because I played all Life is Strange games only after they were fully released. But now, I really want the excitement of at least waiting a little while before knowing how the game will continue! I personally find your set-up very charming; just talking to us with minimal editing is not something I see that often anymore, but it provides a calm atmosphere I personally enjoy :) So I wouldn’t mind if you continued like this! I kinda wish Skip would’ve returned, not gonna lie :-( But not in place of Steph, but as one of Haven’s residents or visitors; it would make the Life is Strange universe feel more connected if more characters appeared in more games ^^ #Skipper .< in Episode 5, I even hoped Alex would stumble upon him, even though a month had passed since the incident. I don’t think I ever felt that much denial about a character’s fate before D: I honestly hope for a game that makes its killer determinant on your choices, since that is exactly my cup of tea. But yes, I agree it shouldn’t be in a Life is Strange game since those usually focus on other things. Then again, one of my theories for Double Exposure is that the killer is not the same in both timelines, so who knows? I found True Colors to be a nice game, it just didn't excite me as much as the other games did. But that's a matter of taste. While I think Ryan is great, I don't quite understand the reasoning. Recently found your channel and Im glad someone is making videos on life is strange. I didn't really like true colors I don't remember anything about it I honestly forgot it existed until recently. Even though I only like the OG and Before the storm I still check out every game.
I was actually more into Mac being a love interest than Riley. With Mac’s emotional volatility, he and Alex would be a perfect match. She could feel his emotions rising and help him regulate them which would make her in turn feel like she’s using her powers to truly help somebody. She could be like a balm to him and that could be great for her confidence in growing her powers. She helped him from his panic attack already. They began having rather intimate interactions over the game involving emotions. Plus, Mac flirts with Alex at the fair. I think Alex and Mac were a missed opportunity. I see Jed less an evil and more as weak and desperate.

personally i felt the steph and alex romance was also rather weak, i think the developers wanted people to be torn between steph and ryan so they pushed the romance with ryan more, as it’s assumed their audience will automatically root for the previously introduced steph, but as a result they made steph’s romance seem lazy, and low effort.
I would love to see you talk about life is strange true colors more, its not my favourite but the lack of appreciation for it is disappointing for sure
My thoughts as I was watching someone play was that Gabe didn't die but was hidden way or was lost in the mines and it would have called back to him asking her can you find Ethan using your powers? She could have spent the time learning her powers and finds she could and found Gabe but 😢 he died
On the whole "Ryan romance is better"+ "can't get behind Steph romance": Um no its not at all. Ryan: - does not get Alex to speak up for herself and be true to herself - needs to be romanced in order to take Alex's side in the ending - can be considered as stifling Alex by anchoring her to the town Steph: - does get Alex to be more comfortable with herself and to be more outspoken - takes Alex's side in the ending regardless - can be seen as being broken free and finding the concept that home & community are not physical things; they're a state of mind/connections made with people. At most you can say you prefer Ryan's version of "home" that is a physical place, while Steph represents the concept of it being more emotional/bonds/state of mind. I have and will always be Alex/Steph over Alex/Ryan, because of it leading to a more sure of herself, knowing someone has her back, and the bigger concept of "home" & "community" that it has to it.
They might make Life is strange with Max in before the storm and after life is strange one when she leaves Acadia Bay with or Chole dies and when Max and Chole are in New York in life is strange two and time of true colours
