    At 38 years old I’ve been drinking bourbon for 24 years. They start us young here on the bayou. Elijah Craig has been my go to bourbon for the past year. I went through the port finished phase. I’ve tried everything from old charter to Pappy van winkle. Elijah Craig, to me, just epitomizes everything a bourbon should be.

    If this vlog were exclusively about the liquor, it wouldn't appeal to me as much. It's the dynamic of two very different individuals, you, Daniel, enthused, informed, and eager to describe the bottle at issue, often with some history of its origin, and T-Rex, cognizant that too much detail can wear on your viewers, providing a lackadaisical impression of the first few sips with humorous comparisons and scenarios.

    Elijah Craig was my first Bourbon love. Haven't tried it since they changed to NAS, but not as a form of protest. Just because I've been trying new things. I'm sure it's still great and a great bargain. Plus, I love the acetone/shoe polish note that I get with the EC. That being said, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is one of the best bourbons I've ever tried. Great review.

    I just worked my way through a bottle of Elijah Craig small batch. What tasted balanced at first, ended up a little too sweet. They could reduce the sweetness by half and it would be ideal. It affirms, once again, that long term drinking is much more reliable than the sniff and snort sampling we get in reviews. The irony with the EC small batch, is that it does not fit the taste profile of the E.C. high end bourbons, which tend to be oakey and very neutral/dry.

    I remember not liking bourbon having been more of a whiskey, scotch, and rum fan but I'm about to give it another go with Elijah Craig. As I've gotten older I have noticed that I enjoy drinking just a glass of Irish whiskey or scotch over most mixed drinks, with exception to gin. Still enjoy gin, lime, and tonic.
    Update - Tried the Elijah Craig, loved it.

    During the last 10-15 years, I've been slowly turning into a bourbon snob. Elijah Craig Small Batch is the best I've tried so far. Yeah, I'm sure there is better, but I drink so infrequently that it takes about a year for me to go through a bottle.
    Any recommendations for what to try next?

    After binge watching this show all day I've come to realize just how poor my taste in whisk(e)y is. I need to get myself some good whiskey. What would you recommend as a good entry whiskey for someone wanting to appreciate some of the better whiskeys out there?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmmm. It depends on why you classify yourself as "poor whisky taste". What do you like? I have only found a handful of whisky that I truly disliked, and some of the cheapest ones are often awesome.

    • @davidrahn9903
      @davidrahn9903 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've mostly had your standard super market bourbons and only mildly enjoyed them. Jim Beam and the like. Beam specifically I found to be a bit overpowering at first. I wouldn't say harsh, but not easy or particularly smooth. Now I am fully aware that part of this can be attributed to the fact that I am very inexperienced in the realm of whiskey and I don't have the palette or the experience to pick out more than a few things in any given whiskey. When it comes to beer I'm a fan of pale ales and IPAs if that gives you anything to go on when it comes to recommending a whiskey. Thanks for the help, really enjoy The Vault. Keep up the awesome work guys.

    • @Cherokie89
      @Cherokie89 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      An easier cheap whiskey I'd recommend is Jim Beam black label, or maybe try an Irish whiskey first to get your feet wet, like Jameson/Jameson Caskmates. Super smooth.

    • @KatiePhongh
      @KatiePhongh 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you find Beam too harsh, perhaps you are not accustomed to the strong wood in Bourbons. If that is the case, whiskey matured in second fill barrels might be more to your liking. Perhaps a sherry forward Scotch like Balvenie Doublewood 12 or Glendronach 12. If you don't want something that is so fruity and sherry forward but still has a smooth finish similar to a salted caramel and some tea, Bunnahabhain 12 is a great place to start. Also, Daniel turned me onto Teeling Irish Whiskey and it is a dram to savor. Good luck!

    I thought your description of who you would send to get this was a little too accurate. I just picked out EC at random today from the store as my first bourbon. Hey guys.
    I'm a little late to the party, but enjoying a glass of Single Barrel Elijah Craig while you review this. I'm sure small batch means 10 to 20 barrels blended, so the Single Barrel is basically the same whiskey... I assume.
    Very enjoyable. Interesting how different it is on the heels of a glass of Hudson baby bourbon.
    I think I prefer the Elijah Craig over the 100% corn Hudson baby bourbon.
    Likely the extended time in the barrel that I enjoy.

    • @CapableFox64
      @CapableFox64 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Likely correct on the age of Hudson. Elijah Craig is technically 200 or less. So there will be some differences from the single barrel. Not fortunate enough to ever see the barrel proof, but maybe one day.

    I bought a bottle of this (Elijah Craig Small Batch) three days ago in order to make a cocktail (gasp!), an Old Fashioned. Didn't like the taste of the bourbon watered down. Tried a shot straight from the bottle. Now I drink it neat, exclusively. Lowball glass. Bottle is already half empty. Go, me!

  • @gwcrispi
    @gwcrispi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just bought a bottle because of all the good reviews but I found this to have an almost non-existent nose. No burn on the finish. Even though it is 47% I found this to be "less potent" than some 40%-45% whiskeys. They called it friendly and too smooth which is spot on. Perfect starter bourbon. I'll finish the bottle but probably won't buy any more.

    • @forrestearwood9146
      @forrestearwood9146 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try Ezra Brooks, ( is very good) It has an overpowering nose and a heck of a burn on the finish, It was a good starter bourbon for me but I was looking for something more refined than that or Jim Bean or Evan Williams or Jack or even Makers Mark. The list goes on to include Bullet , Woodford Reserve, and Knob!!!! I think no burn is magical ?????

    I don't think it's nearly as good without the age statement. Personally, Elijah Craig was a "go-to" bourbon for me. You could get it anywhere and it was somewhat of an oddity at that price considering how good it was. They've added 8-yr old barrels now and it's just not the same. I bought a case of the stuff when I found out they were doing it and I'm hoarding it like some Pappy Van Winkle!

    I often get a Raisinet note with ECSB... raisin covered in low quality milk chocolate.

    How does that compare to the barrel proof? How does that compare to Jack Daniels barrel proof?

    Do you have any videos on the difference of bourbon and scotch?

    You guys are wrong about Elijah Craig, he was the first to use charred oak barrels. It was an accident as he was using old oak barrels that were used to store fish. He burned the barrels to remove the fishy smell. That is actually his claim to fame. It’s written in Kentucky history and in the Kentucky ledger.

    I am a complete noob to whiskey/bourbon. My nose smells alcohol and musty apples. I think I smell a hint of vanilla or caramel, but too weak to tell the difference. I think I failed the nose test. For me the nose is the same as taste, but the alcohol becomes warmth and the vanilla becomes stronger(not caramel, although the sweetness deceives into thinking caramel). I probably failed the taste test, as well.

    Chocking on whisky might not be the worst way to go, but I plan on staying alive for some time still. I did like the slight change of camera angle - Seems to give a better perspective on where you are, rather than staring at the unending "whiskywall". I'm not so sure that the Rex-love-heart thing will get you the increase in subscribers your looking for...? I might be wrong though.

    Solid Bourbon. But, if Larceny is at all comparable to this Elijah Craig(same distillery 🤔🤔🤔!?)... I would choose Larceny, just sayin'
