  • Have you ever wondered how to find the North Star? Did you know it is not one of the brightest stars in the sky? Polaris is actually quite dim and finding it is not easy.
Unless you know the trick, that is!

When I was a kid, I was told this "story" - to take the distance between the big dipper's two "rear" stars and multiple it 6 times in a straight line, to get to the star, which is the end of the "bar" of the small dipper (Polaris). Even so, it was hard for me to find it, but it is there :). great way to find north, when your's lost in the woods ;)

I learned that trick in elementary school science class - always the best method :)

I can confirm. This works 100% of the time.

Thank you so much! I’m sure this will make me sound really dumb, but I always thought that the North Star was the brightest star in the sky. This makes a hell of a lot more sense!!!

The other way u can look at it is if for some reason you can’t master the “helper star” method or if u just don’t feel confident or comfortable with yourself identifying the “The Big Dipper” since it is a tricky 1 to make out bc most ppl assume that since they’ve seen “The Little Dipper” they tend to believe that “The Big Dipper” is just going to be a much bigger & much more noticeable to identify since they’re thinking they’re looking for a much bigger version of “The Little Dipper” when that’s not the case at all bc “The Big Dipper” doesn’t resemble its smaller counterpart “The Little Dipper” at least thats my opinion on it but the other method of finding Polaris/North Star is when u identify “The LITTLE Dipper” simply count the stars on its handle counting FROM the spoon UP the handle. The 3rd star is “The North Star” it’s the first star at the start of the handle of “The Little Dipper” the last way I know of is to just find Cepheus which is the constellation that looks like a simple stick outline of a house. The ones you normally see kids draw with a square & a triangle on top for the roof. Well the point of that triangle is pointing directly to “The North Star”

Thanks you for the explanation. I have a question: If I'm at London, UK at autumn, will the Cassiopeia (constellation) appear as W or M? thanks.

I learned to find Polaris via the big dipper...way back when I was a scout...and a few other common constelations...and wish I was living where some of this local light would not color the night sky and wash it out...and do wish I also had a decent reflecting telescope...
