I'm a fan of Ocarina of Time and I can't remember how many covers I've heard on TH-cam and I don't understand why I discover this masterpiece only now ahahah
This is a goddam masterpiece. The musicianship is world class, with incredibly sensitive and intentional instrumentation. The songwriting is the biggest strength here. Perfectly lending the power of the progressive genre to expertly portray the themes and motifs of these amazing songs we all love. An incredible tribute to prog and Zelda OOT. Honestly, this is just fucking gorgeous.
I went into this expecting a cutesy walk down memory lane that mirrored countless other VG medleys I've heard before: the same songs, except with different instrumentation, combined in a way that flows, or with simple transitions. Nothing wrong with that style, just not as much of a challenge as creating original music that still appeases that part of our brain that prefers the familiar. Instead what I got is an unique suite that flows and sounds like a concept album from the type of bands I've been listening to since I started discovering my own tastes. This was the perfect blend of familiar passages with (seemingly) original sections, all done with the instrumentation of a large band, and strung together in a way that not only flowed perfectly, but created an entirely new musical narrative. Someone once said that the greatest adaptation is the one that makes you experience the work for the first time again, and this album does that.
I think it works particularly well since OOT's soundtrack is extremely well-suited to prog-rock arrangement. IIRC, Koji Kondo (but also other legends such as Nobuo Uematsu and Tim Follin) were heavily inspired by prog-rock in their heydays.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is what I think about when I say "TH-cam's *true* quality content potential". Also, really glad it's not just a bunch of heavily distorted guitars and aggressive drumming simply rehashing the songs we know. I love the variety of all the instruments here and the overall style ended up incredible. The new licks and pieces added feel great. It's in excellent taste. One of the very best video game fan tributes I'll ever see in my lifetime, for sure.
It's not about the ending, but the journey here. Perhaps it was all the algorithm's plan. But I'm glad we made it. I'm glad we were able to experience this.
He changed the title to be more algorithm-friendly and suddenly it appeared in peoples' feeds. The original title was Tempo of Time (A Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Medley) or something similar.
@@Henrykrinkle5or something like The Mountain by Haken since it clearly had some inspiration here. King Crimson is the end all for prog rock though as a genre
This is an astonishing piece of prog--I can draw parallels from like three different decades. This is both an excellent homage to LoZ and the legacy of progressive music. 11/10, would highly recommend.
I feel wronged by the algorithm for it taking this long for this video to find me. Incredible work. Favorite section was the navi theme with the odd times
In an ocean of generic rock, metal and jazz covers of videogame music, this stands out as the most creative and thoughtful of any I've ever heard. Dream Theater or King Crimson couldn't have come up with a better version of this. Just... fantastic
Welcome to the influx of new visitors directed here by the TH-cam algorithm! It seems that after 3 years, this video is finally getting recommended to the right audience :) While you're here, be sure to check out mine and Marc's channel for more prog-inspired VGM arrangements! Enjoy!
I'm sorry. I'm sorry that the algorithm has kept this from us for so long. That being said, this is bloody fantastic. You've managed what *so* many have failed at, a concept album with great pacing that never feels overendulgent. Bravo 👏
People who have never played Zelda or even heard of it I feel so sorry for. It's truely an amazing experience playing it for the first time. You never forget it.
Something this ambitious shouldn't be this well done. This is a real work of art and I'm super impressed with the talent it takes to pull this off. I'm sure this will be appreciated for years to come.
I love how the first half is mostly from child Link parts and focuses on 70s/80s prog and jazz and after the Echoes/Shadow Temple bridge as adult Link it transitions into heavier 90s/modern prog rock and metal. I'm on my 10th or so listening and still finding new layers and musical references (is that Protest the Hero I hear?). Fucking genius!
@@Marc_Papeghin I always check in on Protest the Hero but it hasn't fully clicked since Fortress. That album was a wondrous blend of musical technicality and adventure melody.
I was riding my dirtbike for 3 hours yesterday and listening to this on repeat. What a masterful performance all around man. From a 34 year old lifelong drummer and dream theater fan
The multi-genre arrangement was unbelievably creative and well done. This wasn’t just Prog, this was the highest degree of Fusion I have ever heard. I loved every single bit of it, but that part of Ganondorf’s first fight... God that got me smiling like a mad-in-love kid.
Yeah, but not that much. But I think in term of awesomeness, the Fairy Navi section has my respect. It's just don't help me to like it enough when I feel too much the Math-Metal genre instead of the Prog-Rock I was looking for. People's ears are bad when comes to distinguish genres. And I think that if 70's-80's version of Yes band did an album on TLOZ: OOT, it would sound so much better than this... But wait: Gentle Giant would troll all of them! XDXDXD
This legitimately made me cry from nostalgia. I've been a Zelda fan since my childhood and am also a classical/jazz/rock/prog musician but have had to isolate myself from video games and music for a long time because of the challenge that is Med school. This was just so tastefully orchestrated and well-executed -- from the multi-genre arrangements to the soloing and the gameplay element -- it really soothed my soul. Kudos to Dr. Pez & Marc for their amazing work... all praise the mighty Algorithm!!! (even though it took 3 years)
@@johnnyc.31 That is true. Concerts are immune to copyright laws. I'm unsure why, but I also don't really care. It lets Dream Theater play entire Pink Floyd albums, which is literal perfection.
It is an absolute crime that this masterpiece only has 2.5 million views. Every person who was a fan of OOT would love this l alone have watched it like 50 times loo. Great for running.
Lol I think I made a comment 2 years ago saying I’ve watched this at least 50 times. Last time I came here it had just gotten over 1M views, it’s definitely picked up some steam, relatively.
I've been on TH-cam regularly for about 15 years now, and I've only made a handful of comments in that entire time. This video is one of those rare videos that made me want to comment to help you out and it deserves so much more attention. This clearly had a ton of passion and effort behind it. Honestly, a masterpiece.
Wha... Holy shit. First, my pants dropped, but as the song moved, it just kept getting better, until eventually my face melted. Ganon's Battle, in particular the first minute, is so freaking heavy it's not even funny. The chills. Not to mention the video editing is brilliant on this! From the performance shots, to the overlays of videogame footage. It's all a genius creative work. Glad the algorithm is finally giving this some well-deserved exposure!
I open TH-cam this morning for something completely unrelated, however this was on my homepage. I listened to its entirety and I couldn't be happier. This absolutely filled my day with joy 💜
I'm totally blown away. The musicianship here is top notch as well as the presentation, and you managed to make this an epic, sprawling, progressive rock masterpiece while still retaining the spirit of Ocarina of Time. I always felt that the great game composers like Koji Kondo and Nobuo Uematsu must have been influenced by the great classic rock and prog bands (Pink Floyd, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, etc.) and always thought that you could hear Echoes (pun intended) of that sound in many different game pieces. To hear these great compositions played in this style so well is just mind blowing, and something I have always wanted to hear. Amazing job! I hope more people do this with other great game soundtracks! Long live these classic games, and long live prog rock!
Standing ovation over here. That was an incredible arrangement, production and performance. I loved all of the old school Dream Theater vibes from this. It was like listening to a fresh Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence album.
Someone just shared with me and I just sat, watched and listened to the entire thing. As a prog rocker, musician and video gamer, this is one of the best pieces of music I've heard in a long time. I was literally moved to tears by the end of the piece. Amazing Job! I would love to see this live.
Can we talk for a moment about how for the "Shadow Temple" part of Shadow Temple he didn't even have to really do anything? Literally just playing the barebones melody on the guitar while overlaying in-game temple sounds. Really showcases how unsettling that dungeon was.
I was afraid this might be labeled "prog" in big giant quotes the way I often see it used these days, but then I saw you had a Haken shirt on and I knew I was in good hands.
I thought that it would be a collection of shitty djent covers, but this shit is so amazing, it’s like he used the style of each great prog rock band for each piece, and it still it sounds so cohesive.
"Prog rock, what a funny concept. I might watch like 5 minutes of this before it gets boring." I say as I proceed to be completely amazed by how well executed this arrangement is. Fantastic work!
I gotta leave another comment. This compilation honestly has become one of my top 10 musical pieces of all time. I listen to this a few times a week and it’s been this way for years now.
I left a comment here like 6 months ago when I first found this video and was completely blown away by how incredible it was-- after relistening countless times since then I just had to come back to donate and thank you guys again for this absolutely amazing work. I went on a road trip with my childhood friend who has loved Zelda and especially OoT her whole life this weekend and I played this in the car for her and she loved it just as much as I thought she would, it was such a joy to witness her reactions (my favorite part was the transition at 7:06-- her jaw literally dropped and she was like DUDE. YOU'RE KIDDING). It was such a wonderful time and such a fun way to reunite with an old friend, so many thanks again for your hard work :)
Personally, if the staff at Nintendo weren't completely impressed and honored by the dedication, creativity, and love put into this piece... I'd be beyond words. This is amazing.
This was a transformative 30 minutes. The entire thing was absolutely brilliant, but that Geurdo Valley section is far and away the best cover of that song I've ever heard. My only complaint is that I didn't know about this sooner!
This is one of the coolest things I have ever come across on TH-cam or anywhere on the internet. I mean truly spectacular. I can’t believe this video is three years old and I’ve never seen it. I am a drummer (who loves prog rock) and my favorite video game of all time is Ocarina of Time. The TH-cam algorithm hit the mark on this one (finally) I would never have thought to put that rhythm under the Song of Storms...I love that. And the djenty slapping intro to Battle is just filthy. Not to mention the frantic 5/8 and 7/8 during the Navi theme. Also the ride cymbal/kick drum groove during Song of Time is like butter. Super creative and original all around. I would love to see a part 2 to this of pieces that didn’t make it into this video like Saria’s Song/Lost Woods, Forest Temple, Spirit Temple, Bolero of Fire, and a few others. This is phenomenal.
I appreciate your perspective as a drummer. As a fairly casual, mostly competent guitarist, I was completely shocked when I realized that intro was leading into Song of Storms. Jfc. Also, Battle intro, and Battle with the swing break, as a BTBAM fan melted me like butter.
@@jandarfett5611 You should probably write the full name of a band that you're mentioning on the initial introduction of that band, and only thereafter switch to the acronym or initials; otherwise, people who might want to know but don't know won't know what you're talking about.
@@Selrisitai Not a bad point, but anyone watching is--by definition--currently connected to the internet and therefore able to find out in under 5s who that band is. You're still not wrong, but it assumes an astonishing degree of laziness on the part of the hypothetically curious third person.

Many thanks for your comment 🙏
Couldn't have said it better
Shit exactly
I think it works particularly well since OOT's soundtrack is extremely well-suited to prog-rock arrangement. IIRC, Koji Kondo (but also other legends such as Nobuo Uematsu and Tim Follin) were heavily inspired by prog-rock in their heydays.

The multi-genre arrangement was unbelievably creative and well done. This wasn’t just Prog, this was the highest degree of Fusion I have ever heard. I loved every single bit of it, but that part of Ganondorf’s first fight... God that got me smiling like a mad-in-love kid.
That Fairy Navi section sounded like it was taken straight off of a Yes album. That bass line just screamed Chris Squire. Holy shit.
I said the same thing for that improv leading up to Song of Storms, too. Dang, I didn't know he could be imitated THAT WELL.

(even though it took 3 years)
This stands up to any prog I've ever heard, just incredibly well done. If Nintendo wouldn't sue your pants off I'd see this live in a heartbeat

Thought I was listening to Mars Volta for a second instead of a Zelda Medley
For real though. He kept the atmosphere on point. One of my favorite parts of this whole piece.
He really didn't have to do anything because that's basically Pink Floyd's song Echoes lol But it was cool, gave me chills. I genuinely enjoyed it :D
