    Yay! He answered my question on pruning the blackberries! I just came inside after pruning & saw this video. Wish I could post pix. I did get some canes to try to root. Also dug up a few stragglers that came up where I didn't want them. Shared with my brother. I also planted 2 plants each of 2 more seedless varieties. Managed to get my 6 Climax blueberries in the ground as well. Mulched with grass clippings & pine needles. Found a resource to get tree trimmers mulch too! I'm so excited!!

    I would love a list of the seed varieties that Paul does plant; broccoli, tomatoes, etc.

    Book recommendation for the person asking about winter gardening: The Year-Round Vegetable Gardener by Niki Jabbour. I read it, and it's great - she tells you which crops will do well "under cover" during the winter and which ones require minimal to no cover. She also gives the late summer-fall planting dates so that you can get the plants grown enough b4 the weather gets too cold/days get too short.
    The author just needs to learn about the BTE method. ;)

      Another great book is Winter Harvest Handbook by Eliot Coleman, he lives in the northeast and runs an operation where he provides fresh vegetables year round. These are provided for local restaurants so it's important for the harvest to be predictable, consistent, and dependable. He's done many many tests on his own over the years to figure out the simplest and cheapest way to predictable grow greens year round and harvest year round. Included is a "schedule" for planting for winter harvest. He does use a greenhouse that's unheated and another that is minimally heated (kept to just above freezing). They even have fresh green leafy veggies in February!

    On the question of using thicker layers of newspaper or cardboard on persistent weeds I would add that having the cardboard or newspaper, as well as the ground really wet will help. It seems to smother out the weeds better.

    As far as the question about getting rid of Johnson grass you can also try grass clippings. A hot green like grass clippings composts very quickly and very hot. A lot of the time this hot process is enough to kill tough grasses like that. You also have to maintain the surface so that the grass doesn’t creep over top of the chips. Also, try running chickens on the areas covered with mulch. We did this and they scratched and ate every single shred of grasses out.

    TREE KALE IS A PERENNIAL. If you grow food and leave it to seed, it will come back on its own. I have friends with gardens and their kale grows on its own. And I grow stuff in the same place every year, I add compost, manure, and Azomite to the soil. Except for beans. Peas I put wood ash out there

    Not eating carrots at minus 5 degrees or minus 10. The ground is frozen. We plant now in August for fall, and carrots, peas, kale, etc. It's buried under snow and I''m not going out there digging in snow up above my knees for a carrot. no way and yes we are in spokane valley near stateline idaho zone 6

    hi Guys, so I have a question, the plot that I got and where I'm planning making my garden its basically covered by poison ivy ( most of my property is actually ) and the roots system of this plants in the ground its really well established, up to 2-3 inches thick, and so i was thinking tilting the ground first to remove as many roots as I can before I lay down the wood chips,.. would that be the best solutions or I can just cover the ground just the way it is with cardboard/paper and then installing the woodchips on top of it ??( im thinking about 5-6 inches thick).. would that kill the poison ivy and the roots system or I do have to tilt the ground first and remove the roots...??
    thanks in advance for the help.. i would really appreciate getting Pauls opinion on this too.

    Ask Paul what to do to keep worms out of fruit. Every apple has a worm problem

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Essie Bell Paul says that he doesn't have an issue with worms in his apples because his apples have so much water in them. Matthew in Oregon uses a sea salt blend in a spray and he credits that to his success.

      Any ideal on the amount of sea salt to water. when do I apply.

    sounds like monsanto to me whatever the first question was. YES THEY ARE RIGHT. I HAVE THE SAME THING AND I'M KILLING IT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. I can't use Groundclear because there's fruit trees starting to grow back there. A yard guy I like came by and said he has stuff that will kill them, the problem is the rhizomes are going under the trees - it would take my trees out. Is it agent orange? at this point - i'm desperate. wood chips didn't work - cardboard and paper didn't work. under dark dark paper with 2 ft of wood chips it WAS STILL GREEN. get the Amine 400 2-4-D. Big R has it. Walmart has it. You can't dig it, it would take off the entire top soil, it's deeper than a tiller will go. To pull the garden we had to take off the top soil (quackgrass), than have aged wood chips and compost brought out from the professional nursery we buy soil from every year for our nursery plants, they deliver it, and we put it all back and covered it with manure and wood chips and it sat for a year, and now it's better.

    I know its to late to ask Paul in this tour, but maybe someone else can answer this question. Paul alwasy says, that he harvest and plant potatoes at the same time. Harvest time is in the late summer or early fall. I planted some potates a few weeks ago and now the sprouts came up. Was that wrong? What should I do?

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1
