    What a strong statement: If it brings disorder to my space, I'm not willing to put up with it! If we'd take that personally each day in our lives we'd be much better off! Yay God! Thanks for that nugget Paul!

    I don't have a chipper so I have been doing some chop and drop of my shrubs and tree trimmings between my raised beds. I also throw my grass clippings between the beds...does a great job keeping the weeds down. I'm looking for a load of woodchips.to really get the beds and paths weed free.

    Another awesome interview. Some questions for him next time or if you already know the answers:
    1. where does he recommend getting asparagus bulbs and when to plant? I'm in New England
    2. are there small plum trees smaller than his? i'd love one but don't have a ton of space.
    3. I covered my ground with paper and wood chips this fall in preparation for planting fruit trees next spring. is there anything I can do orgnically to help speed up the fruit production? I've heard 5-6 years usually. My soil isn't anything like his yet.
    4. I noticed Paul doesn't do any vertical gardening outside of the trees and grapevines. Does he prefer bush beans over pole beans and why?

    I had a problem with little brown Argentine ants a while back. They were swarming over everything in huge brown-black masses. I moved my chicken tractor over the swarms and the chickens went crazy for them. I think the littlest chicks had the most fun. Weird too, the whole place smelled funny, like citrus, while they were eating the ants. Do you suppose Argentine ants are lemon flavored? LOL

    Hey Paul and Thatnub. I started a first year Back to Eden garden this Spring. I know it gets better each year so I didn't expect so much this year. My problem this year is that my plants are yellowing and they stop growing. I am assuming it has something to do with nitrogen but maybe magnesium too! What do you think of adding epsom salts to the base of the plants to fertilize them? Your garden is amazing Paul! It is on my bucket list to come visit you someday and learn from your wisdom! God bless!

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you put the woodchips down this year then planted in that area, I would say it is a nitrogen issue. Some organic fertilizer may perk them back up. I really don't expect too much to grow right after I put woodchips down. Somethings do well in it though. We have some potatoes that I knew wouldn't grow now showing leaves even though they are buried under two feet of fresh woodchips. Tomorrows video to see that.

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nick lee If you watch any of the tour videos, Paul mentions that when he started his ground was clay and rock. When we go by the house in the tour, he makes a point of showing us what it use to look like. After some time of having the tree mulch on the ground, it will loosen up. I don't know about other root veggies but, Paul pulls back the woodchips until he hits dirt then places his potatoes on top of the dirt and covers it back up with about 8 inches of woodchips.

    Does Paul have information of others who have tried the wood chips in other parts of the country. We are in SE TX and will be trying a bed this year. It would be encouraging to hear that the method works outside of WA. I did speak to one person here who claimed it didn't work for us but I don't know the details of how he did it.

    Good video, thanks. Look up RobBob Backyard Farming for wicking beds. Good option those who prefer container gardening or those who have no other option. • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** I now know all I need to know about wicking beds. As I was watching a video about them, I heard Paul's voice say, "just seems like a lot of work". This was basically his response to hydroponics and aquaponics. It might be good for someone who doesn't have land to plant in like an apartment.

    • @10yearvet
      @10yearvet 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      L2Survive
      I agree, I prefer the ground but I do have some on my porch and along the side of the house where I can't dig but want to utilize the thermal mass capabilities of the house wall. Also agree about hydroponics and aquaponics. I think they are good under certain conditions, such as utilizing a warehouse in the city, but overall a lot of work to set up and then maintain. I've got an unbelievable amount of people angry with me because I do not consider them to be "sustainable" either. Not in my definition of being as naturally supporting as possible. Requires to much material to be obtained from the "system" in order to build, Requires constant monitoring, PH and nutrient levels have to be constantly adjusted and there are few true organic products for that and they must be acquired from the "system". I've returned to gardening in order to break my family free from the "system" as much as possible. I'll admit, I am one that believes this "system" is scheduled for a worldwide collapse or, at the least, a major restructuring. I also believe that it will result in even stricter control. I'll admit, I COULD be wrong but no one has been able to explain yet just what is so wrong with being able to provide my families basic needs outside of system control.

      Due to the colder climate in Washington, he has to start them indoors, but he said that if he lived in a warmer zone he would prefer to sow directly in the soil. However for all other crops he sows in ground.

    Hey in the back to eden layers,the layers are news papers,compost/soil,woodchips,and manure.For the soil,can you use mulch instead?

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mike Castellano When Paul says woodchips, he means woodchip mulch. This is the greens and the browns from the tree. You can have a great garden just putting a bunch of woodchips on the ground but, it will take some time to decompose so, it really will not be perfect for planting for a couple of years. Adding compost to the woodchips (before or after) helps the woodchips breakdown faster. No matter what you do, it would be better to put your woodchips down in the fall and let them sit over the winter.

    Paul hi, please how can i make goog soil, and i live in tropical weather, Puerto Rico, its hot a so much humidity, any specific tips for making good soil

    • @TheTrueabundance
      @TheTrueabundance 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Juliz Medina hey! warm and humid is the best climate to make good soil. Make your own compost heap from garden waste and turn it every 4 days. It should always be wet like a damp sponge, so when you turn it add water if needed. Turn it every 4 days (or more often if you can) and you'll have great compost in about 1 month. Or you can do like Paul does, and cover the ground with woodchips (I use straw and hay, and chipped up oleander cos I don't have access to wood chips) and after a while it rots down with the humidity into wonderful soil.

  • @jerzeys2finest89
    @jerzeys2finest89 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey quick question can topsoil be a replacement for compost?since in the back to eden layers,compost is the step after newspaper.its news paper,compost,woodchips,and manure.

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike Castellano If you are starting out a garden all you need is cardboard/newspaper and woodchips. If you leave it long enough the woodchips will turn into good soil. You can add soil amendments like compost, manure, fish emulsion or blood meal between the cardboard/newspaper and the woodchips. If you just had cardboard/newspaper and woodchips then, later got some soil amendments, you should add them to the top of the woodchips. If you had cardboard/newspaper and woodchips down then added topsoil, you would be making more of a Hugelkultur bed which is still pretty cool. The answer to your question is yes since compost is not needed and ANY organic material added to the ground is good.

    Hi, I wanted to know what Paul's thoughts where on using green manure crops to help break down about 1 year old wood chips. I am currently reading a book called "One straw revolution" by Masonobu Fukuoka and he explains how he regularly uses a cover crop along with poultry manure to break down his straw covering. I have noticed the wood chips that had spots with weeds grown over that when I pulled the weeds out it appeared that the roots of the weeds where growing into the wood chips and where speeding up the break down process. I would love to hear what Paul has to say on the matter. Thanks.

    • @osholuongo2774
      @osholuongo2774 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am wondering if the cover crop would act like the weeds and drill into the wood chips.

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Osho Luongo I have heard Paul talk about "One straw revolution" many times. It wouldn't hurt to plant cover crops but, Paul would say to plant crops that not only cover but, feed you. The chicken manure will do enough to break down the woodchips. It can even go on hot if you do not have anything planted. If you put it down in the fall or winter, it will wash down into the woodchips during the snow and rain.

    • @osholuongo2774
      @osholuongo2774 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      L2Survive Wow, that is great information about putting chicken manure straight on the woodchips. I am currently on the fence about getting chickens for manure. I may still do it but I am hesitant. Especially when I can buy 50 lbs of rabbit manure composted by worms for $7.50. Any way that is a separate topic. Thank you for the quick response on my other question.

    • @WriteSign
      @WriteSign 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Osho Luongo
      Actually you don't really need to compost rabbit manure. I've read that it is the only manure you can put right in the soil without composting and I believe it because the best growing grass is always right under the rabbit hutch. I've also noticed that when I clean out the winter rabbit area that I have now No matter what is there it grows like crazy wherever I dump it.

    I never put cardboard or paper down on my grass before wood chips.. Did I screw up, should I add more chips, or not worry about it

    • @L2Survive
      @L2Survive  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is there grass growing through the woodchips? How long ago did you put the woodchips down? The cardboard and newspaper block the sun from getting to the grass. If there is nothing blocking the sun then you will have really healthy grass. So the woodchips are already down. What are some other ways to block the sun from getting to the grass? More woodchips is an easy fix but, you will have to dig through more woodchips to get to the soil below to plant. You could also tarp the area for a while but, that delays your planting time. You could pull back the woodchips, put down cardboard or newspaper then recover with woodchips.At my house I just put down woodchips two feet deep, then started with fruit trees and berry bushes. You only have to plant them once and you will have food for the rest of your life. The next year go for the annuals.

    I use chipped oleander with great success around my fruit trees. Does anyone know how long the toxins remain in the chippings? I would like to free range my chickens around my fruit trees, but don't want to poison them if they eat the oleander chips, or will they not eat the oleander if they have lots of bugs and veggies to eat? (They don't touch the oleander bushes)

      If you like staying healthy, you should never use dog or cat feces in your garden. Zoonotic illnesses are caused by parasites which can be passed from animals to humans. There are about 60 different parasites (including several kinds of worms) in this category.
