    Twilight Princess has a very dark ambiance, but the themes are fairly light
    Majora's Mask's ambiance is closer to eerie than dark, but it's themes are what makes it truly dark

      Its horror. The enemies and the mask is straight up traumatizing for a child. The music is disgustingly eerie and creepy compared to newer zeldas were even the hardest bosses are funny and the music is more electronic than cathedrals and orchestral. Instruments with violins is fucked up

      @@AYOnYASS exactly. Id say Links Awakening is dark behind the veil but light in its appearance. The whole Link cant save the people and has to destroy the island and everyone there is a very dark narrative for a hero to go through. Especially after all the deaths hes experienced in ALTTP so him going through that is very dark.

      I always liked MM better than OOT, it had a much more compelling story and world. Loved the atmosphere and story, it definitely came across as dark vs OOTs.
      That being said I always felt that ALTTP was much darker not in story but environment. The dungeons felt dangerous and unwelcoming, with names like misery mire and palace of darkness. I think how unnerving it would be to have to not only enter them but to delve to their deepest, darkest rooms to be met by an unholy creature hellbent on killing you at all costs. if it hadn't been for the limitations of the SNES I think it would have been the darkest in the series. It sucks they remade it in the form of link between worlds and scrapped the dark gritty horror feel of the original.
      I look at it from the perspective of if it were me having to do what link did, which link had it the worst. OOT and MM had their moments that would have been rough but didn't feel like a horror story. I feel that ALTTP does, even if the story behind the hero and motivations were basically nonexistent.

    Majoras Mask is not just dark, its also incredibly sad.
    The only Reason why Link goes on this Journey is to look for Navi, and while she mightve been pretty annoying for us Players, she was the only Friend Link had left in the end of OoT.
    Poor Boy had no childhood, no Friends, no Home and no real Family.

    The scary thing about majora's mask is that the game encourages you to use your time wisely and help as many people as you can before it's too late but the thing is once you take too long on a quest the music plays faster and faster until you start to hear the bells then the game is like did you help/save everyone?, collected enough moons?, found all dungeons? No? Well too bad because if you don't do any of these everyone you know and love will die and it will be your fault and you can feel the pressure telling you to hurry up with whatever quest you're on or else you'll regret letting everyone die instead of giving you a game over and try again and I love it

    • @Izithel
      @Izithel ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@the1whoplayz I think that realisation that the time limit isn't that important will overpower any sense of dread and anxiety that it attempts to give after a while, it's inevitable.
      But until it does that time limit is extremely strong at making the play uncomfortable.
      During most people's first play trough and first few dozen cycles, even when they realize that they can slow down the clock and return back to the first day, there is that part of them that sees the ever-present ticking clock at the bottom of the screen.
      And it's a constant reminder that the clock is ticking, they will eventually run out of time, and that's a powerful tool to keep people on edge.
      Yeah, eventually you condition yourself to ignore it and the time limit loses its novelty.
      Unfortunately, you can only experience something like this for the first time once, and the ticking clock is never going to be able to stress you out again.

    The little girl in Ikana, Pamela, looked exactly like me when I was little. More specifically, me when this game came out. It took me months to get to Ikana in general because I was just a little kid with barely any gaming skill (Great Bay was the bane of my existence), but once I did and saw her, her and her father’s story hit harder for me. I had a very close relationship with my dad, who wasn’t home much due to work, so when I got to that part, I just started crying along with them. It just hit so close to home for me.
    This game is seriously emotionally powerful and I’m certain that everyone has ‘that one part’ that tugs at their heart because it’s relatable for them in some way

      *[clearly and visibly disturbed]*
      Whatever you do, do NOT compare your father to that man. Your father was far, far better than that scientist. I will explain, but you might need to brace yourself for some messed up stuff. Stay with me and read, ok? And make sure you're sitting down.
      Now, let's think about this. A man of science takes his daughter to a highly dangerous area, where even the dead do not stay in the ground and are hostile in their own right.
      WHERE IS THE MOTHER?
      WHY IS THE MOTHER ABSENT?
      The scientist is researching the dead and apparently isn't concerned about his child's safety, diving into his studies.
      WHERE DID THE MOTHER GO?
      WHAT MOTHER WOULD ALLOW HER CHILD TO STAY IN SUCH A HOSTILE PLACE?
      WHY IS THE MOTHER ABSENT?
      The girl, Pamela, comments at one point that people have fallen in the nearby ludicrously dangerous well full of Gibdos.
      WHY IS THE SCIENTIST RESEARCHING THE DEAD?
      WHY IS HE SPECIFICALLY RESEARCHING MUMMIFIED REMAINS AND SPIRITS THAT PERSIST AS GHOSTS?
      WHY IS THE MOTHER NOT WITH THEM AT THE HOUSE?
      IT'S BECAUSE HE'S EITHER TRYING TO BUILD THE PERFECT WIFE ALA FRANKENSTEIN METHODS OR TRYING TO REVIVE HIS WIFE THAT HAS PASSED ON. SHE ALSO MAY HAVE FALLEN IN THE WELL AND HE'S TRYING TO BRING HER BACK VIA SCIENTIFIC NECROMANCY. AND HE DOESN'T SEEM TO CARE ABOUT HIS CHILD'S SAFETY IN COMPARISON TO THIS GOAL. WORSE, HE MAY HAVE FORCEFULLY ABSCONDED WITH PAMELA FROM A DIFFERENT REGION AND LEFT HIS WIFE WONDERING WHY HE DID SO. AND THE WORST PART? LINK, DUE TO BEING NOT FULLY MATURE, JUST _LEAVES THEM ALONE AT THE END OF THE QUEST IN THIS MESSED UP SITUATION._ HE WAS RAISED BY TREES AND FAIRIES, HE NEVER HAD A NORMAL CHILDHOOD, HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW WRONG THIS IS. IT'S AT LEAST IMPLIED SOMEWHAT THAT THE SCIENTIST FEELS SOME REMORSE AND WON'T CONTINUE HIS RESEARCH. BUT THERE IS NO GUARANTEE.
      I don't know how good your father treated you and I have no right to comment on your upbringing, but I pray that your safety was taken into account as a child and that you were never treated as an afterthought. Thinking that someone would compare their father to this....PERSON.....especially in favorable terms horrifies me. Horrifies me to my core. Sorry, though, if I've offended. Dear gods, that's messed up....

    • @MetaGiga
      @MetaGiga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @Shadow's Wrath You say you don’t mean any offense, but you just went on a huge goddamn rant about how terrible Pamela’s dad was when I just told a story about how my little kid self associated them with my dad and I. I was 5. I’m 25 now. I know the darker implications of it because I’m old enough to see them now. I don’t appreciate being talked down to like this for something that happened two decades ago.
      I didn’t bring this up in my original comment because I was just relaying a story from my childhood, but my dad was unknowingly emotionally abusive. I don’t take any offense to you bringing up how awful he is. The fact you think that I’m ignorant to the red flags and feel like you have to lecture me on why Pamela’s father isn’t a good person is what’s offensive to me. I still somewhat associate Pamela and her dad to me and my dad because of how much it hits close to home. I didn’t want to mention the other reasons why, but there you go.

    The Deku Butler's story is so messed up, especially how it confirms at the END of the game of all places, that his son died and his death was how Link got the Deku Mask. Ugh, such a beautifully done game.
    EDIT: and can we take a moment to just acknowledge that Skull Kid straight up MURDERED the Deku Butler's son just so he could turn Link into a Deku Scrub? The other transformations happened organically, like they died from other means... but Majora just blatantly killed Deku Butler's son and dragged him into Link. Wow

    • @ri-rid4607
      @ri-rid4607 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I think that's "that one part" for me that always gets me. Like out of all the tragic stories we've come across in the game, the Deku Butler's son is the worst for me and I don't know why. I don't know if it's because, like you said, Majora just absolutely murdered him, this innocent little Deku Scrub, in cold blood just to trap Link as a Deku Scrub, or if it's the notion that the Deku Butler doesn't even have peace at the end because he finds out his son is dead. Out of everyone celebrating the carnival and even Anju and Kafei's wedding, there's one person not celebrating anything. In fact, it's quite the opposite: he's grieving. It's a shock for him because he had hoped to find his son again, ALIVE, but it's not often that missing cases turn out well. Everybody else had their time to process the death of their loved ones throughout the game (and even then, grieving is a very long process in general), and his is just beginning. And I feel for him. HOW AM I GETTING EMOTIONAL OVER THIS? GOOD LORD.
      Anyway, tl;dr version: I think that's the saddest and most brutal part and Nintendo really knows how to pull at your heartstrings.
      EDIT: My sister pointed out that nobody knows their loved ones are dead because they see Link's version walking around and saving their kind, in their masks. I think what I meant to say is that the ones he helped were able to process their own deaths. We just happen to see what that looks like for their loved ones at the end of the game with the Deku Butler.

      @@TGOArchive I didn't even mention the Wind Waker in my comment.
      Wind Waker is an interesting case because, on the surface, it's pretty much the brightest and most whimsical game in the series. And then you learn its backstory. It hits _especially_ hard if you grew up playing Ocarina of Time. I was 6 years old when OoT entered my life, and I was 9 going on 10 the first time I played WW. That 3-year interval is a very formative one, so Ocarina was already an entrenched part of my childhood when WW came out.
      For this reason, I actually find WW to be the most depressing game in the series. Not necessarily the darkest, but really sad beneath the surface (no pun intended).

    Lulu also mentions how she didn't mention it to Mikau to not worry him but when her eggs are stolen she balls her eyes out and tells him the story, her reaction to what he says afterwards leaves her speechless and worried as to what he'll do next.
    That led to his death trying to get the eggs back and even in his last moments he sings you a song his last cry for help and even in spirit believing in you to get her eggs back. Also, another thing at the barn, if you do not help the sisters before the last day, one of them will be taken away by the ghosts or “aliens” some call it. The sisters are then forever separated if you do not succeed.

    Also, you didn't mention about the story of Kafei and Anju in the game. Despite getting them back together, you know they will face death together, right at the last hour as they are reunited. Truly heartbreaking and makes you think about life and love and not to take time for granted.

I was not prepared for this and until now, it is the most memorable Zelda, just because it scared the shit out of me, like no other game ever did... and will do... Twilight Princess is not dark at all in comparison to this... Majoras Mask is sad, depressing and not only in a jumpscare kind of way, but much more psychological damaging, because you can feel the impending doom every second of the game and it is about death... also the greatest Zelda ever, because it catches on your emotions like no other Zelda does... even the beginning is so scary, because you get transformed into a deko, have no idea what to do and the 3 days count down with no way to turn time back at this stage of the game and you HAVE TO let it apokalypse happen... as a kid this was freaking me out.

    I think the best way to summarize the difference in "darkness" between TP and MM is: TP is edgy, it tries to be dark and cool just for the sake of being dark, while MM is mature, it's "darkness" comes from mature themes that the game don't shy away from discussing just because children will play

    • @echoesofthevoice9570
      @echoesofthevoice9570 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I fail to see how that's selfish. Perhaps in the long run, it wasn't a good idea, but taking a kid's childhood away is horrible. Once it's over, there's no getting it back. And remember that Link wanted to be a child again, too.

    • @akward4210
      @akward4210 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@echoesofthevoice9570 Zelda did what she had to do and she made the best decision available to her. She needed the Master Sword to be back in the Pedestal of Time in order to close the Sacred Realm where Ganondorf was sealed, which in turn would send Link back to his childhood anyway since he's the only one who can wield the Master Sword. She used her magic to send him back further back in time so that he could have the chance to live a normal life undefined solely by his destiny as the Hero of Time. I have no idea how anyone thinks that her sending him back is selfish, especially since Link himself was already out of place and time in the Adult Timeline given that he was literally a kid mentally in an adult's body.

And for the mother, that would easily make a person exactly like that. Every human can have this happen to them no matter how logical you think you are. The only thing Mikau can be jealous of is how hard I constantly rock his instrument; something I think BotW is missing. I would have loved a playable instrument like in MM. Why is it the darkest? Fun fact: it isn’t. It’s serious and mature, but not dark. We see very natural things like death and confusion. But you had to be around when the game released to truly understand why I feel this way. I had alttp when I was 5, beat it, played the originals later in life, and remember the release of oot and mm well. This game was just drastically different from the norm at the time. It was easy to view as dark but it isn’t actually the darkest. Alttp starts with a murder, a kidnapping, and sees the world contorted into a mutated version of itself. Oot is a literal apocalypse. Mm is just normal life happening while there’s a threat looming over. The threat itself never sees fruition. It’s all prevented before it has a chance to be any actual damage long term. Every game around this game is darker but we’ve been conditioned to believe it isn’t
