    Who really Cursed Ikana...?

      Hylia, you can see because of the carnival of time it’s likely they know about her or worship her. It seems possible that Hylia cursed Stone tower, flipping it. Then cursing the land as STT is almost certainly the Zelda incarnation of The Tower of Babel. It was sealed away to prevent damage to Ikana, a virus like thing. A cancer. They likely sealed it with Majoras mask. Which means that the happy mask salesman or an associate thrust the doors of stone tower open. Knowingly or not, reawakening the curse to Ikana. Maybe Majora didn’t actually do anything at all to Ikana and only man and gods condemned the place.

      @@njfhighlights5355 Agreed with this. There's also "blasphemous" images of a figure "licking" the triforce all over Stone Tower to back this up. As well as the whole inversion theme. I tend to lean toward the idea that the curse is more of a divine thing: "open this door again, and get your souls will never rest." Though, regarding Majora, I heard a theory that the "devil" figure could represent Majora, so perhaps he was the origin of the towers construction. Perhaps he did it again as one final F-U before destroying Termina.
      But honestly, I think the thing that makes Stone Tower Temple so cool apart from it's incredibly creative design, unique theme, and iconic music is the whole overhanging mystery behind it. How intentionally speculative, ambiguous, and open to interpretation it is. It's why I love it even more than the Spirit Temple.

    You know? I always thought that it was the Happy Mask Salesman who opened the curse of the Stone Temple, with the idea that Majora's Mask was kept inside the top of the Stone Temple to seal it away from the lands and evil of the World of Termina. Seeing as the Happy Mask Salesman had stated that he found all masks, not making them and how he "went through great lengths to get that mask" I always thought he had gone to Ikana to retrieve it, leave through lost woods, leading to the mask calling itself out to Skull Kid and getting him to put it on, leading to the Curses of Termina.

    • @Kelaiah01
      @Kelaiah01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      Personally, I think it was actually the Garo Master who opened the curse in Stone Temple, and here's why: the Garo Master's ghost is INSIDE the Temple! It seems more than reasonable to assume that sometime during the war, the Garo Master managed to figure out how to scale Stone Tower and get inside to retrieve Majora's Mask, but since the place is filled with traps (and he wouldn't have had all the gear needed to traverse them, unlike Link), he died before he could find the Mask. So I think it was the Garo Master who opened the doors that led to Ikana becoming cursed.

    • @chompythebeast
      @chompythebeast 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      This is an excellent theory, as is the one you already got in reply. But since I've always operated under a different assumption, I'll share mine: I always imagined Ikana to be almost entirely disconnected from the rest of Termina. It's a neighboring kingdom, a completely different land with an independent history, rather than a sub-region of Termina. But what it really is is a foray into the _themes_ we've been exploring throughout the game: Death, regret, failure, abandonment, and faded glory. As a penultimate chapter to the story, I've always felt like it was itself a bit of a journey down a second rabbit hole, a rabbit hole within the greater rabbit hole of Termina. It's a side-story that parallels that of the main story of Termina, and it serves to highlight the dire stakes of what can happen to a once-prosperous land that suffers total and utter ruin. It's a potential window into Termina's future, should Link fail. It turns up the dial on the hero's proper quest, and in a way, his victory over the Stone Temple is a presage to his ultimate victory over Majora. Even the boss fight seems to underscore this idea (at least in the original, the remake absolutely butchers that encounter): Link puts on a one-off, single-use transformation mask, and absolutely _dominates_ the bosses, manhandles them. Just like he will soon do to Majora with the Fierce Deity Mask.
      It's a microcosm of the Hero of Time's struggle throughout the rest of the game, and coming right at the end, it's the moment where Link ascends from semi-reluctant hero and sufferer of the Big Bad's malice to the True Champion that he is destined to be. No longer a victim, Link masters both the outside world and himself as well (sort of represented in the Elegy of Emptiness and his manipulation of his own avatar). After Stone Temple, in reality, Link's Hero's Journey is all but complete: All that's left is to finish the task.
      As a kid I never tried to connect any of Ikana to any of the other regions in Termina. I always just sort of thought of it as a story-within-a-story, a quest-within-a-quest, one that serves to amplify the game's core themes, and one which ultimately proves to be Link's final, greatest test

    One thing to note, the dead DO stop roaming in Ikana post-twinmold. Bubbles no longer spawn at night, and I’m fairly certain the gibdos vanish and if you already beat twinmold before and do it in a new cycle without playing the song of storms for sharp, the river will remain dry and you will be unable to fix it. Otherwise, i do agree that there’s no solid evidence that majora created the curse, but there’s strong implication it unleashed it. MM is one of the best games ever, and stone tower was always my favorite part because of how strange and mysterious it is. That and the music is a fuckin bop

  • @alchemysaga3745
    @alchemysaga3745 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Hm. Y'know. If Majora was sealed in the tower, but wasn't being appeased anymore, it's entirely likely that it reached out first to the Garo Master as many theorize, leading to the renewal of the curse... then to the Mask Salesman, to actually be freed after the Garo failed... and finally to the Skull Kid, to wreck havoc like it desired.

  • @LordSoldin
    @LordSoldin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +47

    I have a number of things to point out. Firstly, all evidence points to the curse having been in effect for hundreds of years at the very least, Skull Kid can't have been the one to open the tower, and whichever masked individual did it, it doesn't have to be Majora's Mask they were wearing.
    Point two, which is a tad more fascinating to think about: Termina is a separate realm or universe from that of Hyrule entirely, somewhat akin to Lorule, or perhaps even further removed. The connection point that let Link enter was the Lost Woods, a well-known dimensional anomaly clustereff. When entering, he goes through a twisted corridor that turns him upside down, perhaps realigning him from a "Hyrule" orientation to a "Termina" one, as well as crossing a dimensional barrier of some sort. One could postulate that Stone Tower has similar properties, a dimensional rift between Hyrule and Termina, and that the act of "Inverting" the tower is part of the process. It's obvious that whomever created the tower knew of Hyrule and the Triforce, so it makes sense. It's possible that the desert in which you fight Twinmold might actually be a far-flung region of the Gerudo desert, on the Hyrule side of the connection, especially seeing as if not for the inversion, said desert would have to be upside-down above Termina, if it actually occupied the same dimension.
    As an extension of the previous theory, it's possible that the curse of Ikana is something bleeding through from the Hyrule side of things, maybe something from Demise, maybe something akin to Death Sword, maybe something else entirely. To look for the curse of Ikana, one might be well served to look at things causing undeath and desolation in Hyrule. Death Sword (or something similar) was an easy option, as it would reside in Gerudo Desert and has undeath connections, but the same can't be said for Ganondorf or Zant, as the Ikana curse predates both. You could maybe stretch it and say that it's caused by Hyrule-side Kotake and Koume, but that just doesn't sit right either. Other locations in Hyrule that has obvious undeath connections include, interestingly, the Lost Woods, where those who wander turn to Stalfos. Another site of a dimensional anomaly that causes undeath, so a very promising candidate.
    One could rattle off theories for hours about what in Hyrule could be the source of the Ikana curse, assuming that the curse originated in Hyrule and that the Stone Tower is indeed a dimensional portal, but a youtube comment is too short for that.
    It's also worth mentioning that while there's ample evidence to suggest that Stone Tower is a gateway mechanism between the two realms, there's still no real information on where the Garo came from. We can basically rule out Hyrule in that debate, because the Garo were already there when Stone Tower was still sealed, and one of their number might even have been the one to open it and doom them all. Candidates include some lost power in central Termina, where Clock Town now stands, Woodfall, where the original's depiction of the temple had zero architectural similarities to the Deku culture, and could therefore have been an ancient remnant of some other lost civilization (Even more likely when you consider that the two are connected via the river), or even something outside the game map entirely. We just don't know enough. The questions just stack up. Why were Ikana soldiers in Great Bay? Was there a conflict with the Zora or the Gerudo pirates, or did the Garo come from across the ocean, and soldiers were sent to investigate the bay?
    Final point: Termina might have no connection to the Golden Goddesses. It's never stated that they are the only of their divine race, and we only have confirmation they created the worlds containing Hyrule, Lorule, the sacred realm, and possibly the Twilight Realm. We have no idea from whence Majora's Mask and the Fierce Deity came, and the former has demonstrated power greater than what we've seen the Triforce do. We might never get conclusive answers to these questions, but speculation sure is fun.

    • @LordSoldin
      @LordSoldin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I forgot to write the followup on all this, by the by. The hole the Garo Master jumps down from in the unflipped tower is also the one you jump into to fight twinmold when flipped, implying it is a likely origin of the Garo. In the 3DS version, it is even more apparent, as said hole contains a sort of portal effect which is very fancy on the 3DS. Another point is the design of the doors of the temple, showing two suns with different designs, one upside-down over the other. Neither Termina nor Hyrule (or any other realm shown in Zelda) has two suns. So the doors depict DIFFERENT SUNS, flipped in relation to one another. That is a pretty big plus for my theory, I'd say.

    • @wildfire9280
      @wildfire9280 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the case that Skull Kid is immortal he can’t exactly be ruled out. Definitely not the only option though.
      I believe some of the people in Termina spoke of Hyrule, and I imagine this (probably) wouldn’t be the case if Termina and Hyrule were different and/or ‘parallel’ (as is often suggested) universes.

    I prefer the theory that Ikana stands as a representation of what happens if Majora's Mask has more time to do its evil work. Stone Tower Temple was created to hide it away. But, someone opened it up and released all the evil within. Thus, the kingdom was cursed. It WAS Majora, it just wasn't during its recent rampage. It did this a long time ago.

  • @ext93
    @ext93 3 ปีที่แล้ว +55

    The curse of Ikana is the curse that the human spirit faces. We face a choice between good and evil in all of our actions. Dark vs light, day vs night, life vs death. Ikana is the kingdom of the spirit; the the place from which a sovereign soul rules within a person. Buried deep within a nearly impenetrable area, we hide our deepest feelings and understandings of our place in the world. To reach these deep parts of the soul, we must battle and ascend through illusions that we carry about ourselves, clearing dark forces with the revealing power of light and climbing closer to God/gods. We all have a version of ourselves that we wear as a mask, and a version of ourselves that is authentic. This is the duality of Twinmold. Once we battle past the dark and chaotic parts of the human soul, we must come face to face with each side of ourselves, defeat them and restore a sense of unity, which is like standing alone and giving order to an endless space of chaos. We also see this split in skullkid, who is normally a playful thing, but becomes corrupt by darkness. The curse of Ikana is the pursuit of power and greed inherent to every person. That curse is broken by the wisdom of 'good', and the courage to face evil and do 'good.' I think the Triforce is present in Majora's Mask/Termina, but it's not obvious. Majora represents absolute power. Link is, of course, courage, and Tatl is wisdom. Like in OoT, courage and wisdom must join to overcome absolute power. True and good power is not stable unless found through courage and wisdom first. That is why the triforce has power being upheld by wisdom and courage.. thanks for reading I'm high as fuck

    Skull Kid messes up three major areas in Termina, imprisons the giants into masks and puts them in the dungeons, calls the moon to start crashing down and inflicts a number of other random maladies on people. When did Skull Kid have the time to do this? We see the exact moment where he obtains Majora's Mask and flees to Termina, with Link right on his heels. How long does it take Link to get to Termina after turning into a deku? There is the part where he walks through the clocktowers twisted corridors. I wonder if time flowed slower in that place. Somehow Skull Kid got to Termina much earlier than we did.

    • @InfamousZelda
      @InfamousZelda  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Because time plays a massive factor in MM, it's almost a fact that entering Termina has a huge impact on time, whether that be time is slowed when entering Termina or time can be altered whilst in the clocktower, something magical definitely happens though!

      If it did then link playing the song of double time would have sped it up. Interestingly enough is the opening chain of events leading to links arrival into termina. There are VERY distinct changes between the original and the HD remake.
      -skull kid plays the Sonota of awakening (accidently) in the original and then the inverted song of storms in the remake when he picks up the ocarina after knocking out link. Both times link wakes up to stop him before skull kid finishes the song.
      -In the deku chamber the spot light shows three triangles with one being smaller than the other two. In the remake it is a swirl.
      -After the door closes there seems to be a different crest between the two games.
      -in the twisted hallway there is green moss lining the walls. In the remake it is purple gas and dead roots.

    there was another video where there was a theory that the stone tower temple resembles something similar like babel tower, instead of spliting languages they got cursed, and that's why the temple gets upside down, so in theory the ikana people probably sealed the temple after messing with the goddess, so you can say that ikana kingdom is it's parallel version of hyrule, so you can say that the garo might be the parallel version of the sheika, or it could just be another kingdom where we don't have access in the game that sends spies to the kingdom, also remember captain keta mentions the war, so another posibility is that ikana kingdom was at war with the garo before the curse happened, and at their desperate attempt they tried to build higher and higher, and that's when the whole curse happened. and majora simply opened up the doors of the stone tower releasing all those spirits that we encounter in the game.

    I suspect Gomess may be a victim of the curse rather than the creator of it. Maybe Gomess was locked away in Stone Tower to ensure the undead continue to roam the land. Or perhaps it was manipulated, in much the same vein as sharp, into helping create a land where only the dead may roam.

    I think its fair to say Majora, so much as he when hes worn by Skullkid, didnt create the overarching curse of Ikana. If light is the only way to push back the curse, then Majora simply summoning Twinmold to blot out the skies above the kingdom would help spread the darkness. That being said, it would imply that Majora has intimate knowledge on the curse and original fate of Ikana. While I do think Saying Gomez is the progenetor is a lead, I think youve helped solidfy the idea that Majora's mask was created in Termina, and not the other way around.

    Really interesting theory.
    I agree that more than just Majora messing the region up is going on in Ikana.
    The curse is lingering for far longer than just since Link entered Termina.
    I once had the theory that the Garo Master (which I agree with you that he is not the leader of all Garo, but rather a high-ranked soldier - probably the leader of the Garo *in Ikana* ) unknowingly unleashed the curse by opening the doors of Stone Tower Temple a long time ago, in search of a weapon (Light Arrows? Majora's Mask?) that could end the stalemate that the war against Ikana had become. Majora in the present then simply amplified the curse's effects or took advantage of that.
    Gomess is a really, really interesting character. Cool-looking, fearsome and deadly. I like this enemy a lot. Never expected it to be part of a major MM-theory.

    the source of the curse of ikana is found in ... the gerudo desert. you can see it all over the place in twilight princess AND in the zant fight (garo) it jumps you in the face in "The sixth and final phase"
    you enter the desert for the twinmold fight in majoras mask and in twiligt princess you fight lots and lots of moldorms (or run).
    just take a deeper look at it. there is a video that calls it "a war between dimensions", but there is not a single look at the twili/zant as garo. but its obvious if you rly take a look at it.
    there is some stuff you can find in the wiki.
    "Gomess shares its French name, "Faucheur," with Death Sword. The name alludes to the Grim Reaper."
    death sword get me to another page
    "Death Sword is the mini-boss of the Arbiter's Grounds in Twilight Princess."
    "Zant, however, reanimates Stallord's fossil by plunging the Scimitar of Twilight into the skull". take a look at the red version of the scimitar and the eye.
    "Garo Masters are Garo generals who wield two flaming sabers" "Zant will perform various attacks with two Scimitars" scimitar means oriental saber
    there is much much more and it is much bigger than that, just take a look at it. you want to make a video out of it? i hope so, then you rly can say you uncovered the truth of the curse ;)

    the Ikana used Majora's Mask in rituals and that stuff in the past, maybe those events took place in the Stone Tower, slowly cursing the place thanks to Majora's own power, leading the Ikana to seal the tower even though the damage has already been done in the entire kingdom
    maybe the one who broke the seal on the tower was the Happy Mask Salesman, i mean, where else could he have gotten Majora's Mask?

    Very interesting points here. There's a lot of themes that can be attributed to FSA. One of Link's objectives is to stop Dark Link from respawning in the dark mirror. The reaper has a striking resemblance to the king of Ikana, and might be infinitely respawning as a "Dark King" of Ikana. So I think you are right that he is the evil curse, and Ghoma is the root.

    We know the curse reside within the stone tower, we know that it appeared after the doors were opened. But if we look closer at it, does the curse really have to be placed from within? From what I know about curses, they don't necessarily need to take effect where the one using it is. A curse could be many things, a wish, a magic mishap or even the manifestation of powerful emotions. The Stone tower date back to before the kingdom of Ikana and no one knows what it's purpose was. We know it houses the Stone tower temple but the structure itself is a mystery. So what if the curse didn't actually come from someone within the stone tower, but rather was aimed at someone within the tower? There are a few things that I believe could be what triggered it.
    1) The cult behind the waterfall. By observing their shrine we know they created Majora's mask and used it for their rituals. They realised the mask was too powerful and so they sealed it away. The spirit residing within the mask, Majora, became neglected. Neglected spirits tend to be vengeful and that would mean hatred, hatred is a very strong emotion. 2) Captain Keeta, after the shame of losing the war he was unable to find rest. Link finds him, awaken him, release him and is asked to tell his soldiers the war is over so that they too can rest. That would be a wish or a desire, most likely the latter. 3) The war itself, filled with hatred and bloodshed. Violence only breeds more violence and so the circle is on. 4) Sharp is consumed by hatred and curses anyone or anything that gets too close. 5) The well is full of walking dead, so that would either mean that people have fallen in and died, or died and were dumped down there. Regardless of circumstances that would created hatred and/ or despair. This was the case in that movie I can't remember the name of ;) 6) Ikana castle. Due to the fact that Garo roam the grounds we know that the war had it's effects even here. Igos du Ikana aswell as his servants eventually fell and that would mean more hatred and blood shed. A ruled falling to the enemies could mean the dying moments were nothing but hatred toward the invaders.
    Now what if the curse was placed on the Garo within the temple? He would most likely not be the leader of the race but of the invasion team. Everyone who died or was affected by the war would curse their enemy, they would have strong feelings of hatred toward the one who lead the invading troops. SO what if it wasn't one person, being or turnip who placed the curse, but everyone? If enough dark emotions and bloodshed occurred, the curse could spiral way out of control and in return wipe them all out. Very much like if you were to put more fuel in a fire. The dead doesn't exactly roam far from where they died, or at least it doesn't seem that way, and there is nothing inside the chamber where the Garo leader is, so if the curse was all about his death and then bound to his body and he died in the temple, the centre would be within the stone tower. There are many things that could be the source, and since nothing is actually stated by the creators we can only speculate. But does it really have to a single source when there are so many candidates?
    And as a little final, The game is all bout two things really. 1) Everyone has problems, regrets and the like. There is more to someone than what meets the eye which is why the skull kid and Link pretty much has the same story. 2) Losing something or someone and coping/ finding your way again. We meet the dark themes over and over again, and every time we see those around the victims trying to cope with it. But this is just me ranting speculations. What if we're all crazy and live on a cake?

  • @nebulouscat2210
    @nebulouscat2210 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I feel like this theory is really good! I thoroughly enjoyed it. The only things I wish you had spoken about was the story of stone tower temple and the people of ikana trying to build a tower to the heavens in mockery of the gods. I think that maybe it is possible that the reaper is an agent of divine influence and was sent to curse Ikana even though the curse of Ikana lingers even after his demise...I think maybe perhaps like the shadow temple and the well, it is a place saturated by evil, pain, death, and regret..it's barren land is also very representative of the ruined kingdom that is it's namesake. Although I would like to wonder...what if the place was cursed before the kingdom itself was even born. So in short what came first, the kingdom? Or the canyon? What if the reaper was bound there by magic blasphemous rituals used inside the tower? Not to mention the existence of the desert realm within the inverted tower...or even the inverted tower itself? What is it's true nature? If one falls into the sky eternally where does one end up? It's almost like the gods mocking the Ikana kingdom saying "you wanted to reach heaven? Well here you go step off and find it". So many unanswered or mysterious questions. With even more mysterious and shadowy answers. Thanks for the quality video!

      When I look back at this video I do wish I had done it a little differently with a little more indepth analysis, the only problem with that is the lack of In game information, the Zelda team really didn't put alot of information regarding the backstory of Termina so it's alot of speculation. @Gilbals 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting, but there is the secret shrine to discuss and the iconography of Majora's Mask there. It's possible the "ancient tribe" that made the mask and sealed Majora within was from Ikana (though not necessarily the ghosts that reside in Ikana now or the Garo), and the rituals and whatnot are part of the overall lore of the area. The tower was a mockery of the gods and the curse could come from that too. As for who opened the doors? No clue on that, it seems the curse of the blasted land is very old and could mean many things, but it could be an issue of the curse itself being old but the doors were only recently reopened, reanimating the cursed souls once more, however there's no evidence for that.

  • @CCgivemeawedgy

    The story of the tower of babel is, as you know, part of the old testament. God was concerned about what humanity could achieve if they all understood each other so he basically made more languages to confuse them. The old testament is basically a testimony of God's Wrath and wrath isn't just about destroying things in the physical sense. By confusing humans, he made it impossible for them to end the project and thus, forbidding them from reaching heaven on their own. My theory is that the stone tower temple was originally built as a place of worship for the three godesses: Din, Farore and Nayru. But as time went on, humans(the ones in Ikana Valley anyway) became more and more arrogant, believing themselves to be above the goddesses and so they built the Mask. Now, knowing some of the inspiration for the stone tower temple and where it was taken, I would assume the Ikana Kingdom built the mask using some of the same methods those cultures used to appease their gods: ritual sacrifice(these would, however, be considered dark magic in termina and so, making the goddesses angry and perhaps be the beginning of the goddesses leaving Termina). This time, however, I believe that the person used as a sacrifice was a child, ready to die in order to serve a greater purpose: aid their people. Their gender might be unknown but their name I believe was Majora and the ones who built the mask kept the name as a namesake to remember their compatriot's sacrifice. It was all great, at first, but then generations passed on and very few remained who remembered how the mask was made. The people got greedy and jealous and instead of worshipping and praying to the three goddesses, they started remodeling the stone tower temple in the image of their greatest power: Majora's Mask. The goddesses got angry at this(wrathful, one could say ;) )and decided to curse Ikana Valley as they left, by creating Gomess and placing it inside the temple where the "heretics" would pray and killing them. Gomess would then proceed to curse the land itself and seeing as how it is the embodiment of the goddesses wrath, only the chosen champion of Hylia(I believe this would be some sort of failsafe, in case Gomess became too powerful and evil overpowered Majora, I believe that they purposefully made it all happen when they returned to Hyrule and after Link defeats Ganondorf, they ordered Navi to go to the lost woods thus making Link follow his friend and stumbling upon the portal to Termina)could defeat it.

  • @DCombz
    @DCombz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My guess is the curse comes from the goddesses, as they built the stone Tower in a profane gesture towards them considering the stone blocks are creatures with long tongues sitting on the triforce with their rear-ends and the giant mask at the top is some sort of other deity, perhaps Majora itself. It's also curious that you use the light arrows (which seem like gifts from the goddesses) to invert the tower and have it face towards hell instead of the heavens. It's only in this state that the tower is inverted that the Death Armos appear, which come across as invading warrior roaming the halls of the Tower. It still comes across as war and perhaps a religious one. Thus it's a battleground between the goddesses and Majora and perhaps the goddesses were able to place the inverting seal on the tower to seal the evil within there, which is why Gomess and Twinmold are both only found in the inverted version.

They should have released it with 2 options, the original way, like the Zora swimming and original boss fights ect, and then this new easier way to experience the game, both with updated textures and such, but yeah even the lighting was botched in the 3ds version :(

    • @chompythebeast
      @chompythebeast 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@InfamousZelda I am so glad you even mentioned the lighting, that was the first thing I noticed before I even left Clock Town. Tatl is too damn bright! Where's the spooky darkness!? Everything is too colorful, too. It went from Silent Hill to Crash Bandicoot or something. Frankly, even the muddy textures and resolution from the original add to the atmosphere, like a black and white movie, or the dust particles and imperfections on old film that produce snowy-looking artifacts. I could have readily forgiven that antiquated feel (Ocarina 3DS ditched it too) if only it had still felt true to the original somehow (like Ocarina 3DS did).
      I think it was a bit of an example of the creator not fully understanding what made their creation so great in the first place. I'm reminded of George Lucas "improving" things like the Sarlaac Monster in Return of the Jedi, only to make it waaay less cool and scary. Apparently the Special Edition is "closer to the original vision", but it turns out the original vision was inferior to what was actually and originally produced under the limitations they had. Majora 3DS suffered exactly that sort of blunderous revisionism

    I have a differing thought, originally posited by one before me I forget.
    As you climb the stone tower and even approach you see many statues and boxes with a figure and its tongue licking something- and this something is the triforce, either betwixt its legs or directly underneath.
    This could be clear blasphemy and opposition to the triforce gods of creation, wherein in some twisted tower of babel, the people, trusting in the strength of the giants, have attempted to create a tower which goes to the heavens, with a portal to heaven within the temple.
    But the usage of majora, whose insignia is clear upon the face of the temple in inverted form, instead twists this temple from an ascent to heaven into a descent into hell (in the inverted form, and clearly twinmold's realm).
    Ancient usage of majora to defy the gods may have been a prank by majora upon the ikana, or the curse of undeath which plagues the ikana simply the wrath of the gods themselves for daring to attempt to assault the heavens.
    In each case, we have the reaper of ikana, whose job it is to guide souls, without a job, as the souls of those within ikana are disallowed from leaving.
    Perhaps, at the same time, they were also being spied upon by a neighbouring country being near the farm or somesuch.
    When the gods unleashed their wrath upon the ikanese those spies still there also became stuck, and as there has been no penance, or opportunity for penance from the ikanese, aside from link as a saviour, we see the region still gripped by undeath.

I don't think "the reaper cursed everyone" really makes sense as you have to make a pretty big leap for that to work. I think Majora unsealing the tower is most likely.

    I honestly start to think that the ancient war and conflicts created malice just like in later Zelda games. The malice causes the dead to keep on lingering despite the curse of Majora and the reaper. This combined and it explains why the dead keep continue to roam the land of Ikana. And this also explains why it may take centuries before the effects of malice wear off and then the dead may finally be able to rest. After all the sources that kept feeding the hatred are now gone

    Great Vid definitely subbing whatever went down in ikana it was not all the skull kid. Also a thing to note is that everyone in ikana is evil until link breaks some type of curse on them like they are possessed by an evil influence. Where else have we seen this I wonder??????? SKULL KID

    I loved Ikana, in part because I discovered it all myself. I didn't use any walkthroughs until the castle, and the comic skipped the whole story. I really liked the mystery of it.

    Have you watched Save Data's Videos on the music of stone tower? He briefly speaks about stone tower in relation to the Tower of Babel and its relation to Stone Tower. I wonder, could the mask itself have cursed the Ikana to endless life as revenge for having been sealed away. The Grim Reaper may have attempted to help the soul of majora move on, but it's hatred for the Ikana tribe wouldn't allow it. Instead, majora drove the reaper to madness (most likely with the promise of power) and then used it to curse the Ikana tribe indefinitely. I always figured the bats were like souls, but because it has a physical body made of souls, it was bound to where the souls were bound to.

    I thought it was cursed due to the constant "small battles" the king talks about, which means a lot of war, hunger and death. Ikana seems like it was already in shambles even before Majoras showing in Termina, that's the reason it stays as it was even after defeating Twinmold.

    Ikana is the most interesting sub region in all of Termina due to its lore, mysteries and secrets, culture, the war, death, and many other things. It's interesting to theorize about who built stone tower and what is the real cause of the curse in Ikana. I believe that an ancient, ancient race, the same one that created Majora, created stone temple, perhaps in spite of the golden goddesses as shown by the imagery in the tower and in the pillars in the entrance to Ikana (and the fact that the face in the temple kinda looks like Majora when you look at it upside down,
    ) as they believed in Majora as the true God. Maybe, and just maybe, the Golden Goddesses forever cursed the land for the blasphemy of this race, dooming every soul that would even dare to step in the land of Ikana. Maybe it wasn't the fault of the goddesses, maybe Majora itself cursed the place when it was created. The story of Ikana is deeply tied to the stone tower and temple, and who created them. Why would someone build a tower that high and with many, many holes? Are they windows? Why are there so many defensive mechanisms inside the tower? Were they in war with another kingdom? Country? Race? And if they were, with who? Is it a metaphor to the old old tale of the Tower of Babel? Are there any other things that could point out a reason for the construction of such a massive structure? All of these questions remain unanswered, and will probably remain that way forever, so it's fun to speculate and theorize about them....

    I posit that the mask salesman is the one who opened the doors and as he was leaving termina was when skullkid got the mask. Majora is a major theme throughout the stone tower, with its eyes, colors, and shape being central design points, so majora was stored there. How could the mask salesman get it if the reaper and all those other things were in his way? I think the kingdom had already fallen but, since the reaper was sealed in the temple, he could not guide the souls into the afterlife (garo or ikana). So, they all took undead or spirit forms, continuing on in death as they had in life. Then, the mask salesman comes along and opens the doors, having learned what the garo could not. A garo captain sees this and follows, but doesnt make it very far. The reaper sets about to do what he needs, but before he can the salesman gets the mask, unleashing the already pent-up hexes and curses that majora was used for and imbued with. The land cursed, its inhabitants undead and cursed, and now the reaper cursed. This land, unable to be reaped, falls into undeath. The reaper, now cursed, either cannot or will not do the reaping and instead attacks those living that come to the tower. Living like the one who unleashed the curse. Living like the mask salesman.
    The mask salesman has a secret mean and psychotic streak to him, and he had a hold of the mask long before skullkid did, so long as to bring it to hyrule where skullkid gets it. I think he is at least partially to blame for the curses of ikana, as it is a land ancient enough that it mustve already been undead.

    You cant fix Ikana because it has long since passed away. Like Death, once anything dies it's obviously beyond repair. Nothing can be reworked or fixed once the only thing in life that is guaranteed, Death has done its work.

    Maybe the Garo were Sheika spies sent by the hylian royal family to prevent ikana from reaching the sacred realm as the stone tower is like the tower of babel and maybe the reason the Garo see link as one of them is because for a second they saw him as a hylian child far from home but we're angered because they thought he betrayed Hyrule by being present in ikana

    I like to think skull kid did it first of all at the start of the game link falls probably signifying he's traveling through space and time wich would make sense that the skull kid got there 100 of years before him and he could have opened the door and cursed both garo and ikana while they were at war

    i think stone tower temple was a prison meant to keep twinmold and/or the curse trapped, so when majora opened it, it released the curse.

    I can't help but notice the many similarities between the garo and gerudo. They both move around and fight very similarly, down to their choice of weapon: two scimitars. Also, it's kind of weird that the gerudo are entirely limited to a single fortresses, and they can never be found anywhere else in the entire game. Also also, the Stone Tower temple is heavily inspired by Middle Eastern cultures, just like the Spirit temple in Ocarina of Time, which belongs to and is watched over by the gerudo. Meanwhile, Ikana castle is heavily inspired by European architecture.
    Is it possible that Ikana was originally the home of the gerudo? Maybe they were the ones who sealed Majora's Mask away, and when it was released, they fled to the Pirates Fortress so they would not have to face Majora's wrath.
    This would also mean that the stalchildren and gibdos we see throughout Ikana are former colonizers of the land. They are probably the ones who released the curse, and they probably bore the brunt of its effects because of it.
    Or maybe I'm just insane

    I'd like to make the argument that Majora itself IS the curse that was sealed away in Stone Tower, and was released when the door was thrown open, possibly by the Garo. There's iconography within the temple itself that resembles Majora's mask, and you said yourself that it's tribal looking. As we know, the mask was created by an ancient, now extinct tribe. I believe Ikana, and more specifically Stone Tower, is all that remains of said tribe's architecture.
