What a great video, really enjoy your channel and the information you share! (so thank you for helping me grow!) If there's one thing I could ask, is a video that compare a product owner to a product manager and you thoughts on this.... (sorry if you already did one, not gone to it yet hah!)
This is a good description of an entry level product management position. It's a narrow slice of what product managers are responsible as they grow in the career. So, for those interested in the function, this leads to roles where you'll manage teams, gain responsibility for product strategy, multi-functional product launches, business/pricing models, ROI/NPV, innovation and customer research, and ultimately, if interested, a general management role.
You know this video was made by a great PM because a great PM knows how to build products for their audience. And you've definitely hit it out of the park with this one! Succinct information, clear laid out examples, fun laidback atmosphere, striking visuals. I mean well done! From one fellow PM to another, bravo! You earned yourself a sub :)
I loved the % breakdown of work you mentioned. That is SO accurate. The meetings are the most time consuming part of this role. I just finished my first year as a Product Manager and I am loving my career. Thanks so much for this video.
It's definitely a balancing act of meetings and building the documentation for our teams. The larger challenge I see is keeping the teams on point of the scope of work. Essential why the documentation is needed up front to keep folks focused. Too many times have I seen our meetings go down rabbit holes. So glad you're enjoying your first year! After being in various roles, PM is my fav as well. Going on year 7 as a PM.
Any particular suggestions when starting to look for this positions? In terms of interviewing, how much coding one does (I prefer to do some coding), etc
This is by far, the best video I've seen about what a PM does. Thank you so much. I loved how you used examples with the theory and the flow you brought to it. Amazing
This is very informative. I work in the B2B space, so my understanding of product is different. It's pretty eye-opening for me to hear that there could be a product manager for something as simple as buttons. Your video made me realize that a consumer tech app isn't just a single product, but a conglomeration of multiple products. I can see why there would be worry of feature cannibalization.
Yesss! B2B and consumer tech is totallyyy different. Feature cannibalization is one of the main fears of any feature being rolled out. There's also always a ton of conflict between different teams with different North Stars. Some of them actually oppose each other, and there's a fine balance we need to strike. Org structures can get really complicated!
Hi Haley!! Ahh thank you for the kind comment! Glad you found it well thought-out. Def trying to put more tech content out there to demystify these processes!
@@chloeshih definitely! I'm not a PM but I work with PM for >5 years in the bay. I really think this is one of the best summary to describe product launches to anyone, tenured or entry level. I am currently a TPM, tranistioning into a product manager role. You have done a great job explaining the role of product manager very well, thank you for the details and video. 💥💥
I worked as a Product Marketing Intern at Amazon and was kinda thrown into the Product Management/Development Process without knowing the whys and hows. I learned a lot but your perspective on Product Management really helped me understand all the processes we went through and all the meetings I had to attend. Given the short time as an Intern I couldn't see the full effect of every document or meeting but now, I do see the benefit of all that. Thanks a lot
This video is fantastic! I’m a Business Analyst who kind of fell into the tech industry with no formal background, so I feel like there are some industry practices and tools that I’m not fully aware of. I’m interviewing to be a Product Manager and it feels really intimidating, but this video really puts it all into perspective. From the bottom of my heart - THANK YOU!
Thank you, Chloe, great insight into your profession. I am a technical recruiter who has also worked on customer-facing teams at SaaS companies. It is one thing for me to think of different roles based on my understanding of colleagues on other teams at the tech companies I have worked, but this is even more helpful to understand what you do as a PM that is from company-agnostic perspective.
@@chloeshih yea of course! Just off the top of my head I’m curious if you follow any industry leaders to learn different perspectives or skills, how active are you on LinkedIn or how you go about networking, and how you prepare moving from one role to another in what seems to be quick turn arounds (a year or so)?
Very nicely articulated. I’m finding more and more that not even recruiters, people operations or senior leadership get what we do which is disappointing. It’s such a valuable role that sits between a lot of moving parts. Great job!
it's super disappointing when senior leadership doesn't even get it :( glad you enjoyed this breakdown! i do think this is an older explanation of my product role where the eng team was more waterfall than anything. will probably need to do a new one!

First comment on TH-cam, gotta to say this content is well-structured, really brings me a lot of insights on what a Product Manager is and what specific tasks they'll do in a real-world environment.
Seriously. That was a really informative video on what a PM does, where you have delivered tons of quite hard to understand tasks and responsibilities in a simple to grasp fun way, with some great examples, exactly at the point where I'm thinking "err.. I sorta get what you are saying .. I think" I really didn't know that much before about the role so it was perfect for me to get this really enjoyable overview. Your pie overview at the end also really insightful. For me it was 10/10
I was asked this question by someone yesterday and this description is well put together compared to how I said mine. Quite similar but yours is so much better 😂
I was super interested and excited to see how interesting this job seemed until I saw the amount of meetings... Design process seems super interesting to do though.
Omg it truly is death by meetings. And it’s usually the type of meetings where you have to be super engaged and have intense discussions to make decisions. But yes design process is the fun part!
In my experience and observation, a lot of PM's are often weak technically and a key person from the development team ends up carrying the water for much of the product development cycle while the PM is simply aggregating input from others such as the UI or the business teams. I've seen better product managers that were promoted out of technical positions that have a much better understanding of the product framework.
Not really, partially yes, but i will add problem identification and solution development also. You can have a lot of potential improvements and prioritize it, but when all of it solving wrong problems, then it means nothing

Thank you so much!! Woohoo another fellow PM!! :D Lmk what topics you think might be interesting for me to share my thoughts on. I feel like the PM space is such a hidden world sometimes!
Would love to hear you talk about things like imposter syndrome (if that’s something you ever deal with) and maybe some specific examples of features you worked through (if you’re able to, of course!) - that’s all that comes to mind for now! Looking forward to more content! :D
Love the expression and happiness in your thumbnail face ^_^ that I had to watch you here... and he’s product managers make really good 😌 glad to hear someone like you enjoying your career!
Thanks for sharing this video Chloe, I’m trying to pivot from merchandise/demand planning to product management and the things you mentioned are skills I currently have just not tech related
I have 20 years of experience as a ux and product designer. Half of the work you described is owned by designers. But you are young and the experience will come.
Thanks Chloe! Super helpful hearing about your role and responsibilities. Working with UX very closely and we often find (and struggle : P) with the overlap as far as understanding the users.
I am a PM and I can relate to your points ;-). But contrary to you, I dont think this can be an entry level position at all. There is a lot of politics involved in the job, managing expectations, meeting clients, deep understanding of the market, etc, tasks I wouldn't give to a junior. There is a reason why it is a well paid job and, from this video, it doesn't show. Highlighting the differences between a PM and a product owner could be a good idea for a video too, there is a lot of confusion between the two!
I can't phantom how someone like her can have 3.5K subs and some others doing nothing pretty much getting 500K+. But anyway, subbed. Great content, thanks for giving actual value in videos. Hope you continue to grow quickly and others pick up on your great work!
Thank you! It was interesting ;) I'm also working as PM, but in small companies 100-200 employees, building main functionality. Documentation takes only 10% of time, usually development team does all documentation. Really cool job, very diverse, with big area of responsibility and at the same time freedom. And well payed ;)
Love this video tons! You might have nudge me out of my comfort zone in corporate world as a BA to now trying to pursue the PM role. Yeah…. Daunting yet exciting!
PO is a role in Scrum, it should be treated the same as a PM but is often structured as someone who works closely with the dev team, writing stories etc while the PM is responsible for strategy. A good organisation knows a PO is just a PM.
Thank you for the informative video. I am currently working as a Financial Controller but looking to make a career switch and I think a Product Manager role will be a good fit for me.

Just love the way you present this video , 🤩 kind of stuff one like me would look into..
I love the percentage breakdown.
Your energy is infectious! Fellow PM here who is always interested in hearing how other PMs PM. Subbed! :-)
Haha thanks for liking the thumbnail! I had another friend tell me it was an awkward face xD I'm glad you also enjoyed the video!!!
About to have a Product Manager interview today and this helped a ton. Thank you!
there's a lot of information stuffed into this video ,fantastic!
Glad it helped! Thanks for watching!
Wow you just set my new goal! You’re so cool that i wonder what is your age since the responsibility is quite tough and you look young! Respect!
Thanks for sharing this video Chloe, I’m trying to pivot from merchandise/demand planning to product management and the things you mentioned are skills I currently have just not tech related
Your production quality and content are so good! Underrated channel.
Ahh you’re so sweet!! Appreciate the words of support!
Great job laying all of this out, Thanks Chloe!
Appreciate the comment, Shamel! Glad it was helpful. :) Let me know if there are other topics you'd like me to dive into!
I have 20 years of experience as a ux and product designer. Half of the work you described is owned by designers. But you are young and the experience will come.
So create your own video
Oh boi oh boi, Chloe have done it again ladies and gentlemen. Great video and insightful information. I love it ❤️👌
Accidentally found it. Thank Chloe for a very helpful & detail explanations to get me know more about PM job.
it's really not easy. thanks for this Chloe
This was really helpful for me, thank you so much!
I'm gunning for this position with Microsoft or any big tech company after I get my MBA this December. Wish me luck lads.
Thanks Chloe! Super helpful hearing about your role and responsibilities. Working with UX very closely and we often find (and struggle : P) with the overlap as far as understanding the users.
So exciting..... I am in love with product management
Actually very specific information with examples and detailed commentary. Keep posting, your content is top tier.
Ahh thank you!! I'll do my best to keep it up. Lmk if there are other topics you'd find helpful for me to cover!
TH-cam algorithm has your video on my 1st page and wow. Very informative. Thank you. 💪 🥇
WOOO THE ALGO GODS HAVE BLESSED THIS CHANNEL!
Thank you it was super interesting video. I am a product manager too. Interesting to see colleague's day and workflow
I can't phantom how someone like her can have 3.5K subs and some others doing nothing pretty much getting 500K+. But anyway, subbed. Great content, thanks for giving actual value in videos. Hope you continue to grow quickly and others pick up on your great work!
Aw thank you, Olivier! Appreciate the kind words and support!
Thank you! It was interesting ;)
I'm also working as PM, but in small companies 100-200 employees, building main functionality. Documentation takes only 10% of time, usually development team does all documentation. Really cool job, very diverse, with big area of responsibility and at the same time freedom. And well payed ;)
Hey Chloe! Thanks for sharing your experience. It was really helpful! Cheers. Cheers from Brazil!
WOW...Great description breakdown! very Helpful.
Love this video tons! You might have nudge me out of my comfort zone in corporate world as a BA to now trying to pursue the PM role. Yeah…. Daunting yet exciting!
Thank you for this video, Chloe! Your role break down at the end was especially helpful. Cheers!
I was hoping to see more about the diff between a PM and a PO, because some of the functions you mentioned are in the PO wheelhouse.
PO is a role in Scrum, it should be treated the same as a PM but is often structured as someone who works closely with the dev team, writing stories etc while the PM is responsible for strategy. A good organisation knows a PO is just a PM.
@@seawork3449 This is spot on.
Very well summarized the PM role.
CHLOE!! I loved this video. You’re super super good at explaining things!
LING!!! Ahh thank you ~ Hope to do more videos like this. :D
Thanks for going into so much detail! This will definitely help me with my future job!
This was extremely insightful and what a great way of explaining it!
Thank you, Joanneeee! I'm glad it was insightful to you!!
I didn’t realize how popular this job is until recently. I thought software engineering was my set career. Back to square 1.
Thank you for the informative video. I am currently working as a Financial Controller but looking to make a career switch and I think a Product Manager role will be a good fit for me.
i'm glad to hear!! i do think this video is somewhat outdated. I might make a new one now that i've worked at more companies!
Thank you!! Very clear and super helpful!
This was super super insightful. Been combing through a bunch of PM videos. Thank you Chloe..
