I have always considered myself a "Project" Manager (dealing with stakeholders, timelines, resources, budgets, scope, etc) but at my last role I spent a significant amount of time involved in the kind of work this video outlines. Watching this makes me realize I need to weave some "Product" management wording into my resume.
I rarely post comments on TH-cam, but this is one of the most simple yet comprehesive videos about new product managers out there. Definitely worth the sub!
Liam I can't stress enough how informative and thorough your 12:51 minute video was! I got more insight on specifics of the PM role then an 11 hour course I took on becoming a PM! Looking forward to watching your other videos. Thanks again, and you rock!
Hi Liam, I'm 19y/o studying finance and cognitive science at university. I discovered your channel recently. THANK YOU for providing incredible value in every video. I will be a product management intern at a tech startup this summer and already feel more prepared for the role after watching all your videos. Keep up the great work and can't wait for your next video! :)
I found this shockingly helpful as someone with no specific education in the realm of product ownership, but who has managed to land there in our growing startup. I’ve got a good to-do list to make sure I’m growing into the role!
Thank you for your channel, truly useful and love it that you aren't trying to sell yourself or anything else here! Could you please do a video on how to approach product teardown? There are a lot of content however I think your thought process is quite structured and succinct.
Been a software engineer for better part of a decade and spent the last two years building businesses. Seems silly but i wasnt sure if i was qualified to apply to a product manager role, thanks for spelling it out that indeed im beyond the understanding in these areas and would make an excellent PM
1. Yes! Please don’t use AI buzzwords if you don’t understand them. Senior PMs will suss you out and question your motives. 2. ALWAYS ask your engineering lead for an architectural design diagram, a functional flow diagram, and a data flow diagram. Could be all-in-one. And understand it fully!
Hey Liam, I'm a new subscriber and new to the PM role. I'm just going through your PM related videos and I'm quickly burning through them lol - do you have any plans to make more? I would love to see them!
Thank you this is such an amazing video, it gives me some guidance about where to start. I’m about to start a certificate I hope I can use what you just shared and become a PM.
how does internet work at high level? how is data stored at high level? data types string, integers, doubles, floats, file types etc. what does a API look like? why does an API need a key? what are some well known API? what does an programming lang used for what is an app? what is a client? native app vs web app trade offs? what is a server ? what is latency? SQL
Hi @Liam, can you also share your insights on how to understand what the interviewer is evaluating on? I feel it is a lot of luck as interviewer might be wearing a special hat and trying to test us on that specific skill. What are the right questions/tricks to find out the interviwers' evaluation criteria?
i personally tell the candidate what pillars i’m evaluating on and it’s expected that the candidate does some homework before the interview (or ask the recruiter) more details on what those pillars entail. i feel like it’s fair to ask the interviewer if they don’t tell you up front.
I have all these skills. Experience as ux designer, I looked into creating my own business figuring it out and have an understanding of the domain, and have an understanding of technology domain as I have an engineering degree in IT. I want to get into PM since I enjoy getting to know user needs get into behavior patterns, spot opportunities to add value to users and to the business, I understand analytics. How do i go about getting a job in this field since I have no experience as PM? As a fresher in this field? I have designed degree, I have IT engineering degree and I have self taught business acumen.
You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you. --Maya Angelou.,.,.
So which component takes up most of your time? What do your daily activities look like? If the designers are more informed about user interface design would the product manager role be testing and researching their design choices? How much of a say does the product manager have in the design?
I don't understand something about PM. The engineers know how to build the software. The designers know how to design the UX. The business guys know how to handle the business side. What is the PM supposed to do then?
Manage them, define requirements, follow metrics, think long term for a product, understand customer problems, etc so many things the product manager would do, and the best thing is AI can't replace this role
My masters program focused heavily on marketing technology, or the technical side behind it all. I wish we learned SQL tho. I’ve seen that more and more in job requirements. Do you know if courses that contain SQL are supplemental to actual experience? Like is it respected?
Hi Liam, I see every product manager at Microsoft have a engineering background in India. I have gone through atleast 20 linkedin profiles. So its safe to conclude that microsoft hires people with engineering back even if you have mba ?
I think you should understand a lot deeper the technical side, what you said is very superficial, a chinese 3 year old knows all the technical shit that you mentioned
The video I just watched is hands down the best for understanding the essential skills a PM needs. It's truly incredible.

I wish I found this video very earlier.
Where have you gone? You have not made a video in more than 2 years!
The best PMs used to be data scientists
ithon app
Java not to develop a mobile app! 😑
This profession has become overrun by frauds. Go get real design, development and business experience first. You’ll know when you’re ready
I think you should understand a lot deeper the technical side, what you said is very superficial, a chinese 3 year old knows all the technical shit that you mentioned
I'm glad I selected this video. Can I join you? I'll get us a table. #sqljokes
